Major Characters

Characters from the games

    Kirby

Kirby (カービィ kaaby)

"Hey, hey. A mountain of fine cuisine, how much is that? As big as Mt. Dedede?"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8eb9d909c7dc1cfae0929969a985a0dc_6.png
The gluttonous protagonist. He can copy and use the abilities of those he has inhaled.

The pink puffball himself, and The Protagonist of the novels. Compared to the games, Kirby is characterized as a cheerful, naive child who's always optimistic and always hungry. He's best friends with Waddle Dee, and rivals with King Dedede.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: It's pretty mild, but he has some moments of brattiness in the novels that isn't present in the games. For example, in ''Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!", when Waddle Dee wakes him up at the start of the book, he deliberately pretends not to see him and tries to go back to sleep. He's also willing to resort to underhanded means to get his way, as shown when he tries to inhale King Dedede rather than lose at rock-paper-scissors.
  • All-Loving Hero: Kirby tries his best to see the good in everyone and forgive them.
  • Calling Your Attacks: He starts doing this from Volume 6, when he uses a technique for Copy Ability.
  • Cheerful Child: In his happier moments, Kirby is as sweet, peppy, and excitable as any other child.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Do not ask Kirby to cook. In Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!, he makes a "cake" with bizarre ingredients like chili oil and garlic.
  • Discard and Draw: He can't inhale or use Copy Abilities while in the Dream Kingdom. To compensate, he uses equipment like the locals.
  • Expository Pronoun: Uses boku, emphasizing his childish side. (And arguably, considering some of his grammar, his Ambiguous Gender.)
  • The Hero: Needless to say, he's the central character.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: The main character, and his role in Team Kirby is their swordsman.
  • Idiot Hero: He's quite naïve and almost always thinks about food.
  • Immune to Mind Control: Kirby is immune to the Malice Crystal because its effect breaks when its victim thinks about what they love the most... and Kirby is always thinking about food.
  • Is It Something You Eat?: A Running Gag in the novels is him mistaking ordinary words for food. For example, shoutaijou (invitation) and shōtokēki (shortcake).
  • Knightly Sword and Shield: His role in Team Kirby is the swordsman, agile enough to distract foes while Hammer and Beam do their work, and protecting the team from particularly devastating attacks.
  • Lethal Chef: This is established in the first volume when he bakes a cake. While he does have the mechanics of cooking right, his sense of ingredients need work as he pretty much puts whatever he feels like into a dish.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: The novel emphasizes his immense strength and speed, even without a Copy Ability. That being said, he usually tends to do better with a copy ability and there have been several times where Kirby struggles in a fight distinctly because of his lack of a Copy Ability.
  • Terrible Artist: Shown in the sixth volume, where Claycia isn't too happy about their works.

    Waddle Dee

Waddle Dee (ワドルディ wadorudi)

"You're amazing, Kirby!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/95308e3897bb815822545fb9aa26a86f.png
King Dedede's world-weary subordinate. Friends with Kirby.

A resident of Dream Land who serves as the loyal retainer of King Dedede, no matter what sort of terrible treatment he receives. He's also best friends with Kirby, which makes his position a little more complicated.

  • Beleaguered Assistant: King Dedede insults and berates him constantly, and treats him as little more than a glorified errand boy. It's only Waddle Dee's admiration for the king and Dedede's rare displays of compassion that keep him on payroll.
  • Best Friend: To Kirby.
  • Calling Your Attacks: He did this while he was brainwashed by Baron Gallic.
  • Composite Character: Like the Bandana Waddle Dee from the games, he's Kirby's best friend in Dream Land, but his role as King Dedede's beleaguered assistant gives him some traits in common with Escargoon.
  • Decoy Protagonist: He's the common thread between Kirby and King Dedede in Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion!?, so he's the main character for the first three chapters. But when Meta Knight shows up, Waddle Dee goes Out of Focus, and he's left to take care of Castle Dedede while Kirby, Dedede, and Meta Knight attend Madame Parfaitsky's party.
  • Everyone Has Standards: In Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!, he's understandably reluctant to follow along with King Dedede's plan to send Burning Leo after Kirby.
  • First-Person Smartass: He is frightened of King Dedede's temper, but in his Inner Monologue, he doesn't have problems thinking what he really wants to say about him. Occasionally, it slips out as subtly as it can.
  • Forbidden Friendship: He's besties with Kirby, but is also King Dedede's servant. As Kirby and Dedede have a fierce rivalry, their friendship needs to be kept a secret from King Dedede.
  • Japanese Pronouns: He uses boku, much like Kirby. It doesn't emphasize how young and immature he is the way it does Kirby, though.
  • Non-Action Guy: He always leaves the fighting to Kirby and King Dedede, where in the fourth novel, it is shown that his attacks have no power. That is, until he becomes Bandana Waddle Dee.
  • Not So Above It All: In Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!, when he realizes Kirby has mistaken "Parfaitsky" for "I love parfait", he decides to humor Kirby and talk about his favorite parfait flavors.
  • Only Friend: He's the only person in Dream Land who seems to respect King Dedede — pretty much everybody else considers him a gluttonous Jerkass.
  • Only Sane Man: He shares this role with Meta Knight to Kirby and King Dedede's antics, although sometimes he's Not So Above It All.
  • Servile Snarker: Downplayed, since Waddle Dee usually confines his real thoughts to his Inner Monologue, but occasionally it does slip out.
King Dedede: You must be struggling with how good my fashion sense is. ‘Cause no matter what clothes I’m wearing, I’ll wear ‘em with style.
Waddle Dee: Y-Yes. I am struggling.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: In novel 5, Waddle Dee was dead-last in all the challenges but in the end managed to win the entire thing when the rest of the competitors were too busy dealing with Peperon.
  • Took a Level in Badass: When he becomes Bandana Waddle Dee.
  • Undying Loyalty: To King Dedede even when he frequently pushes him around.

    King Dedede

King Dedede (デデデ大王 dedede daiou)

"Y… You IDIOT! I am Dream Land’s magnificent ruler, His Majesty King Dedede! There’s NO WAY I’m gonna make food for somebody else!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6d1739ba7b6ccfcc84052f6859439502.png
The selfish and egotistical self-proclaimed king of Dream Land. Views Kirby as his rival.

A gluttonous, boorish bird with a rotten temper and a huge ego. Dedede claims to be the king of Dream Land, but outside of the few subordinates willing to put up with him, he's considered little more than a nuisance by the populace at large. He harbors an Irrational Hatred against Kirby, even though the two of them are fairly similar personality-wise.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Unlike the games, where Dedede is mostly a Friendly Rival to Kirby and would go as far as taking on an army of beasts for a single Waddle Dee, this version of Dedede is a boisterous, narcissistic prick who openly loathes Kirby and is abusive to his servants.
  • Anti-Hero: He would help in solving cases, but always expects a reward.
  • Authority in Name Only: This is especially emphasized in the novel, where it is told in the first novel that most of the residents only see him as "their loud, gluttonous, annoying neighbor".
  • Bad Boss: He regularly yells at and insults Waddle Dee, and even kicks his servants around when he's really angry (which is often). But he has a Hidden Heart of Gold in there that keeps Waddle Dee working for him regardless.
  • Catchphrase: "I'm King Dedede, great ruler of Dream Land!"
  • Casanova Wannabe: In Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!, he brags that "the ladies won’t be able to take their eyes off me" once he shows up.
  • Condescending Compassion: According to Waddle Dee, Dedede has helped him and shown him compassion many times in the past, but always does so in a condescending, egotistical sort of way.
  • Crazy-Prepared: His rationale for keeping a frilly dress inside his closet.
  • Creepy Crossdresser: He keeps a pink, frilly dress with a huge ribbon in his closet, ostensibly because a king needs to be prepared for every situation. This weirds out Meta Knight and disgusts Kirby when he reveals this in Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion!?, though it does come in handy when Kirby and Dedede have to be Disguised in Drag together.
  • Expository Pronoun: Uses ore-sama (オレ様), which shows both the "manly side" that Waddle Dee respects and his egotism.
  • Hated by All: Pretty much everyone in Dream Land (besides Waddle Dee) thinks of him as a pompous Jerkass who eats too much and talks too much.
  • Impossibly Tacky Clothes: Some of the outfits he considers wearing to Madame Parfaitsky's birthday party include a really shiny multicolored sequined suit and a set of full-body tights that are covered with gigantic feathers. Waddle Dee is appalled, especially when Dedede keeps bragging about his fashion sense and how "sexy" he would look in those clothes.
Waddle Dee: (thinking) His Majesty’s fashion is always terrible, but... This is... especially horrific!
  • Irrational Hatred: Parodied. He hates Kirby so much that he leaps to totally insane conclusions to justify it. For example, in Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!, he sees Kirby stirring a mixing bowl outside and thinks that the pink puff is trying to make a bomb to blow up Castle Dedede.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: It is shown few times in the novel that he genuinely cares about Kirby and Waddle Dee's well-being.
  • More Hypnotizable Than He Thinks: In the fourth novel, he scoffs at Sword Knight and Blade Knight for being brainwashed, believing that that could never happen to him. Until chapter 4 rolls around...
  • Narcissist: Dedede has an immense ego, bragging about his Impossibly Tacky Clothes and flying into a rage when he thinks (correctly) that Madame Parfaitsky would never invite him to her birthday party. He also thought of his clone as "adorable."
  • Smarter Than You Look: Begins showing signs of this in the eighth volume.
  • Terrible Artist: Another common trait with Kirby, where Waddle Dee was appalled by his drawing of a rocket.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: As shown in Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion!?, King Dedede loves anything meat, particularly beef steak.
  • The Rival: He is frequently at odds with Kirby, although the two have a lot of traits in common.
  • Unknown Rival: He considers Kirby his rival, but Kirby is too young and too kind to understand the reasons behind Dedede's hostility.

    Meta Knight

Meta Knight (メタナイト metanaito)

"A true warrior is capable of using every attack at his disposal!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2a665cb7dfbb557f58d4f6adc3d28006.png
Always wearing a mask, everything about this swordsman is shrouded in mystery.

A mysterious, dashing swordsman who flies in to visit Dream Land from Parts Unknown. He's an honorable warrior, loathing unfairness in all of its forms, but he is surprisingly easy to embarrass when his reputation faces the others' comedic shenanigans.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: His arrogance and agressivity is much more pronounced here for most of the Novels, to the point of him being perfectly willing to attack some of his allies such as Kirby and King Dedede, when he feels frustrated enough. After some Character Development, he slowly dials back on this, taming his own worst tendencies.
  • A Father to His Men: Meta Knight deeply cares for Captain Vul, Sword Knight and Blade Knight, and the Meta-Knights, where his men are very zealous for him.
  • Blood Knight: While implied in the games to an extent, Meta Knight is much more heavily shown to be one in the light novels. This is most clearly shown in Meta Knight and the Galaxy's Strongest Warrior; when Galacta Knight seemingly vanishes in the middle of their fight, Meta Knight turns on Kirby and King Dedede despite the former's pleading, dissatisfied with the abrupt end of the fight.
  • Cultured Badass: He is familiar with the waltz and the tango. He has also met Madame Parfaitsky before at another party, implying he mingles with high society elsewhere on Popstar.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Starts being this to Kirby and King Dedede in the sixth volume.
  • Expository Pronoun: Uses watashi, showing that he is more calm and refined than the boyish Kirby and Waddle Dee or the arrogant King Dedede.
  • Famed In-Story: He's famous across Dream Land and beyond for his cool, mysterious personality. His reputation takes a hit during Madame Parfaitsky's party, through no fault of his own.
  • Honor Before Reason: In Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion!?, he decides to visit King Dedede and ask if he wants to be his dance partner because it would be "unfair" of him to just choose Kirby without hearing Dedede's thoughts on the matter. This gets Kirby and Dedede fighting over who will accompany him, and ultimately forces Meta Knight to accept them both in a Totem Pole Trench disguise.
  • It's Personal: Upon his desire to put a stop to Baron Gallic's scheme.
  • Only Sane Man: Shares this role with Waddle Dee in terms of being the most levelheaded in regards to his dynamic with Kirby and King Dedede.
  • The Spook: The books play up how mysterious and "unknown" he is. In his very first scene in Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion!?, the narrator takes the time to mention that his face behind the mask, his past, and where he comes from are completely unknown to everyone. He only comes into Dream Land occasionally, and presumably has duties elsewhere.

Original characters

    Madame Parfaitsky

Madame Parfaitsky (パフェスキー夫人 pafesukii fujin)

"I have prepared more food and dessert than one can eat! Please, help yourselves."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kirbyln_madame_parfaitsky.png
A wealthy woman who has recently moved to Dream Land.
Madame Parfaitsky is a major character in the first novel, "Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion!?", where she throws a lavish birthday party that Kirby and Dedede try to attend. A woman of incredible wealth, incredible palate, and incredible girth, Parfaitsky is well-known as a gourmet, and has hired chefs from across Planet Popstar to prepare food for her birthday celebrations. However, there may be more to her than meets the eye...
  • Big Eater: She stated to have eaten thirty whole pizzas in one setting before.
  • Big Fancy House: Owns the eponymous dangerous gourmet mansion. According to Waddle Dee, she even built it herself!
  • Big Fun: Parfaitsky is very round and fat, but she's still determined to throw the biggest birthday bash that she can.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She looks pretty polite, but turns out to have locked up every chef that "talked back" to her in her mansion.
  • Conspicuous Consumption: Pun not intended, but everything about Parfaitsky, from her mansion to her garden to her jewelry, is all noted to be very extravagant to the point of being somewhat tacky. Evidently, she's wealthy enough to feel like she has to show it off.
  • Creepy High-Pitched Voice: Meta Knight hears her shrill and high-pitched voice before he sees her. The "creepy" part comes in when she's revealed to be a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
  • Dub Name Change: In French, her name was changed to "Madame du Parfait-Glacé".
  • Everything's Sparkly with Jewelry: She wears pearls all over her outfit, and even her petticoats have jewels in every fold. For bonus points, the pendant of her pearl necklace is shaped like a piece of candy.
  • Expository Pronoun: Uses watakushi, which shows that she's a very formal and dignified party hostess.
  • Fat Bastard: Kirby comments how round she is, and add that with what King Dedede's lackeys reveal about her...
  • Gratuitous English: She makes sure to let Meta Knight know that after food, it's "DANCE TIME" in English.
  • The Hilarity of Hats: She wears a hat that looks like a flan topped with whipped cream and garnished with a cherry.
  • Meaningful Appearance: Her design immediately communicates that she's a rich gourmet.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: Not used in the Evil Laugh sense, but even her nervous chuckles are rendered in text as a "hohoho".
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Wears an otherwise ordinary-looking red dress with gem-encrusted petticoats.
  • Punny Name: In Japanese, "Parfaitsky" sounds a lot like "I like parfait" (pafe suki). In the first chapter, Kirby mistakes her name for that phrase and asks Waddle Dee what his favorite parfait flavor is. One Fan Translation even calls her "Mrs. Parfait-like" to preserve the pun.
  • Shipper on Deck: Madame Parfaitsky clearly ships "Dedeby" with Meta Knight, calling them a suitable match with what the narration calls a "knowing" smile.
  • Sweet Tooth: Even ignoring the Punny Name, Madame Parfaitsky has an obvious love of sweets. Her Dream Land mansion is built to look like an enormous cake with "fruits" and "ice cream" designed as parts of the architecture, and her garden has plants made of sugar, trees that "grow" cakes and candies, and a fountain that sprays melon soda instead of water. She even wears a pendant shaped like a candy in its wrapper. Her sweet tooth might be one reason she's so fat.
  • Verbal Tic: She says "My" frequently, and ends lots of her sentences with "desu no".

Minor Characters

    Chef Kawasaki

Chef Kawasaki (コックカワサキ kokku kawasaki)

    Bronto Burt

Bronto Burt (ブロントバート buronto baato)

"Yo, Waddle Dee. Here for dinner? Sorry, man, Chef Kawasaki is out."
A flying resident of Dream Land.

A hot-headed brute who is a subordinate of King Dedede.
  • Adaptational Badass: From an enemy who dies in one or two hits in the games to a powerful fire-wielding thug who Waddle Dee claims is impossible to stop if he gets going. Kirby can still inhale him, but here it requires an active effort to get him to let his guard down.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Burning Leo was already an enemy of Kirby's, but there was nothing in the games to indicate he was the thuggish pyromaniac shown here.
  • Breath Weapon: He shows off his fire breath for kicks in his first appearance, nearly roasting Waddle Dee.
  • The Bully: Loves being mean and is described by Waddle Dee to be a ruffian. Fortunately, despite his fearsome reputation, he is more of a Thin-Skinned Bully and runs away when he realizes he's lost.
  • The Dreaded: Waddle Dee urges King Dedede to reconsider sending in Burning Leo in Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?! out of fear that he couldn't be stopped if he went on a rampage.
  • Precision F-Strike: Once Kirby loses the Fire ability, Burning Leo turns back from Kirby's ability hat and says kono yaro, or "son of a—".
  • Pyromaniac: He says that burning down Kirby's stone stove "sounds like fun", and threatens Waddle Dee not to interrupt his "big moment". Waddle Dee is even afraid to talk to him for fear that Burning Leo might overdo it and cause a huge blaze.
  • Smug Snake: Burning Leo pats himself on the back for doing a "perfect" job after he burns down Kirby's oven and has Waddle Dee spray him with a fire extinguisher. He's so busy laughing at Kirby and stroking his ego that he leaves himself open to getting inhaled and copied for the Fire ability!
  • Thin-Skinned Bully: He's an arrogant bully who relishes in burning things, but he can't take what he dishes out. Once Kirby defeats him in Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion!?, he runs away, and he is next shown explaining himself to King Dedede in tears.

    The Meta-Knights

The Meta-Knights

Meta Knight's group of personal warriors that man the Halberd.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite Meta Knight's lack of interest in commentating the big race in Dream Land, the Meta-Knights practically begged for him to join so that they could participate in the race. Later on in said race, they joined in King Dedede's strategy and smashed the maze walls so they could reach the goal, despite the dubious rulings of doing so.

    Magolor

Magolor

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: He turns giant after he makes a wish to the Dimension Mirror to become powerful.

  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. They're all named Kirby, which leads to...
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: They differentiate themselves by their weapon and role (Hammer, Doctor, Beam, and the main Kirby is dubbed Sword).
  • Putting the Band Back Together: Since all four members of Team Kirby parted ways at the end of the Team Kirby Clash Deluxe novel, the beginning of the Super Kirby Clash novel primarily focuses on this. When Dream Land's Kirby comes back to the Dream Kingdom, he and Doctor Kirby initially join forces with the aim to recruit the other two members. Later, Hammer joins them at the Port Village tavern and then Beam Kirby pulls a Big Damn Heroes moment during a battle with Frost Kibble Blade and Parallel Nightmare.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: It turns out the entirety of Team Kirby knew Kirby was from a different world by the end of the Super Kirby Clash novel. Although since Kirby arrived because Doctor used a bell that summons heroes from other worlds, the real question was less how they found out and more how he ever thought it would stay a secret.

When he saw the Legendary Strongest in the Galaxy movie, he dreamed of having Galacta Knight as a guardian. Unfortunately for him the actual Galacta Knight is nothing like the movie.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: He thought he could control Galacta Knight with a bogus controller his dad bought him. Seeing the real deal ends up being part of his wake-up call.

Despite his masterful planning, Beryl has the mindset of a common thug. It also doesn't help that he is the side antagonist to the real one in the novel: Morpho Knight.
  • The Chessmaster: Was able to fool everyone into believing he was Meta Knight in order to ruin his reputation. He even tries to trick Kirby and King Dedede by posing as a young boy and giving them false news on where he'll attack next.
  • Shapeshifting: Is able to change into a perfect copy of whoever he wants, he's even able to alter his voice. He can't copy their equipment or skills though, as while he can copy Meta Knight's appearance and voice, he struggles to fight against Kirby without a copy ability even with the stolen Galaxia within his possession.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Believes he has the skill and experience to replace Meta Knight but even with the Galaxia by his side, he pales in comparison to the real deal.
