Main Characters

    Fena Houtman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fena_pirate_princess_fena_houtman.jpg
Voiced by: Asami Seto (Japanese), Brittany Cox (English), Courtney Chu (Young Fena - English)

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: She argues with Yukimaru over his aloofness and her clumsiness, but that only makes the mutual feelings between them all the more obvious.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: She's known Yukimaru since they were children and has never stopped thinking about him.
  • Clueless Dude Magnet: Her looks gain her many admirers, most of which she doesn’t want.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Fena, in spades. Her plans for escape early on always fall apart due to her not thinking things through, she struggles with performing many mundane tasks, and when the crew try to teach her how to fight, every lesson goes horribly wrong.
  • Damsel in Distress: Because she’s both The Ingenue and a Mundane MacGuffin Person she never learned how to fight and is constantly getting captured. She’s aware of this and asks the Goblin Knights to teach her some combat skills.
  • Declaration of Protection: In episode 4 she tells Shitan she wants to be able to protect Yukimaru.
  • Dressed to Plunder: She starts dressing like a pirate in episode 3. However she’s a Friendly Pirate.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Even after she escapes from Shangri La she still prefers dressing in skirts and heels.
  • Hearing Voices: First in episode 5 and again in episode 10. She occasionally has visions, too.
  • Hair Reboot: Fena's awakening as the Maiden of Choosing causes her hair to regain its original length and even sparkle. When she loses her mystical abilities and consequentially, her memory, she has ordinary dark brown hair.
  • High Class Callgirl: On Shangri La she was raised to be one of these. She hated the idea and constantly tried to escape.
  • Important Haircut: She cuts off her long hair after coming to Goblin Island. This has the usual connotations of discarding a past life and showing new resolve, but also because her hair is very distinctive and she wants to be more than it. It starts growing out a few episodes later.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Her wide blue eyes highlight her kindness and naivete.
  • Jeanne d'Archétype: Surprisingly enough Fena fits. Despite her inexperience and youth she inspires loyalty from more capable warriors with her charisma and pluckiness. She also values her virginity and goes to extreme lengths to protect it, cuts her long hair short and starts wearing pants, starts learning how to use weapons, hears mysterious voices and sees visions, and is feared as a witch by some. On top of all that she remembers being called La Pucelle, is on a quest the real Jeanne d’Arc started, and it’s implied that the voice she hears is Jeanne herself. Then it's revealed that she and her ancestors were actually reincarnations of Jeanne d'Arc herself, as per her role as the Maiden of Choosing.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: She loses all her memories as a result of making her decision for the world.
  • The Load: By episode 4 she’s well aware that she’s dragging the Goblin Knights down and asks them to teach her how to use weapons.
  • Lost Orphaned Royalty: In episode 7 we see from Abel’s flashbacks that Fena’s real father was a king, making her an actual princess. However, Fena is not yet aware of this.
  • Magnetic Hero: She has the ability to inspire the loyalty of anyone she meets. This is also a plot point, with people saying that she can steal people's hearts as a supernatural witch power.
  • Mundane MacGuffin Person: The reason so many people are after her and why the Samurai Seven are helping her. She’s the only one who can solve the mystery of the clear stone.
  • Mystical White Hair: Her hair color made her famous and earned her the nickname “The White Marginal”. Some characters even suspect she is a witch. Turns out it denotes her role as the Maiden of Choosing. It turns dark brown after she sacrifices her mystical abilities.
  • Nice Girl: Fena has a sweet and sugary personality that adds to her allure, and even when angry, she somehow makes it look cute.
  • Pinball Protagonist: Despite being the main and title character, Fena doesn't have a whole lot of agency in the story, as she's mostly there to be a Damsel in Distress Mundane MacGuffin Person. Everything was orchestrated by outside forces to awaken her to her role as the Maiden of Choosing. It is when she's forced to decide between Yukimaru and the world that she makes her first truly independent decision.
  • Plucky Girl: She has no abilities that'd allow her to defend herself nor the aptitude to learn such skills quickly, but she's determined to try anyways. Being threatened and captured repeatedly doesn't deter her in the slightest.
  • The Protagonist: Obviously. Her name is in the title for a reason.
  • Protectorate: She is someone precious who must be kept safe for both the Goblin Knights and Abel, but their motivations differ.
  • Regained Memories Sequence: In episode 7 after witnessing the destruction of the Rumble Rose she remembers more details of the night she lost her father. It causes a Heroic BSoD.
  • Reincarnation: Per her role as the Maiden of Choosing, Fena and all of her ancestors have been this to Jeanne d'Arc, and Fena herself undergoes this by the end of the first season after making her final choice.
  • Sadistic Choice: She has to choose between leaving the world as it is, delaying its inevitable end and sparing everyone in it but risking the world becoming a worse and worse place, or destroying humanity and restarting with Yukimaru. She chooses the former after an agonizingly difficult time, as as much as she wants to be with Yukimaru she can't bear the thought of the other Goblin Knights dying.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The energetic girl to Yukimaru’s savvy guy.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Fena looks exactly like her mother, barring her hair being silvery-white compared to Helena's light-gold. This is why Abel wants her so badly.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Fena bonds quickly with Karin. She’s the tomboy to Fena’s girly girl.

    Shitan

Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai (Japanese), Nicholas Corda (English)

  • Can't Catch Up: He took up archery because he could never beat Yukimaru at kendo.
  • The Casanova: He’s very flirty with women and there is a lot of evidence that he Really Gets Around.
  • Chick Magnet: Most women are attracted by him. Unlike Yukimaru, he’s aware of this and likes it.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: His are purple.
  • The Gadfly: He likes teasing his teammates, especially Yukimaru. Unlike the twins he’s more of a Deadpan Snarker.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: He looks the part and is easily the snarkiest of the team.
  • The Lancer: He serves as a Foil to Yukimaru as well as the Number Two of the team.
  • The Mole: Zig zagged. He is the only one who knows the Goblin Knights’ true mission; to get a map and/or coordinates from Fena to the legendary sword Kusanagi, and then abandon her afterwards. Yukihisa also warns Shitan that Fena is a witch, which he tells his teammates and Fena overhears. However after spending so much time with her he is reluctant to abandon her, and chooses to continue protecting her, knowing he and his teammates will all be hunted down as traitors.
  • Virgin-Shaming: He does this to Yukimaru in a playful way.

     Karin

    Tsubaki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fena_pirate_princess_tsubaki.jpg
Voiced by: Jun Oosuka (Japanese), Alan Lee (English)

  • Flat Character: His whole shtick is to be the nagging mom of the crew, especially to the twins.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He has the shortest fuse of his teammates, making him a favorite victim of the twins.
  • Inexplicably Identical Individuals: Downplayed example. Compare him and when Yukimaru was a young kid. The resemblance is rather uncanny, though neither Fena or Yukimaru ever point it out.
  • Team Chef: He is the only one who does the cooking.
  • Youthful Freckles: Has these on his nose.

    Enju and Kaede
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fena_pirate_princess_enja.jpg
Enja (we think).
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fena_pirate_princess_kaede.jpg
Kaede (probably).

Voiced by: Gen Satō (Enju - Japanese), Brandon Winckler (Enju - English), Ryōta Ōsaka (Kaede - Japanese), Darrel Delfin (Kaede - English)

  • Always Identical Twins: It’s almost impossible to tell them apart. Kaede is the one who wears Green and his earring is in right ear. Enju wears brown and an earring in his left ear.
  • Dating Catwoman: Enju flirts with enemy pirate Mary Read.
  • The Gadfly: They greatly enjoy teasing their friends, especially Tsubaki.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: They both serves as the Funny Guy of the team.
  • Those Two Guys: They’re the type that are exactly the same, making them The Dividual.
  • Trickster Twins: Enju and Kaede pull this off whenever they want to go off and do their own thing.

    Makaba
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fena_pirate_princess_makaba.jpg
Voiced by: Shintaro Tanaka (Japanese), Thomas E. Wynn (English)

  • Big Eater: He eats more than any other character and is always the first to mention food.
  • The Big Guy: He’s the tallest and strongest of the team.
  • Gentle Giant: One of the nicest of the guys.
  • Flat Character: Doesn't really develop much and only serves as the team's second muscle besides Yukimaru.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: Besides of punching as his fighting style, he throws bombs at his target.

Other residents

    Yukihisa Sanada
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fena_pirate_princess_yukihisa_sanada.jpg
Voiced by: Hōchū Ōtsuka (Japanese), Scottie Ray (English)

  • Accidental Truth: He parroted the rumors of Fena's mother, Helena, being a witch to Shitan in order to keep him from being drawn to Fena's Magnetic Hero qualities, legitimizing this by claiming to have witnessed a man be driven insane by Helena's charms. That man in question was Abel, and he indeed was driven insane. But it wasn't as a result of any enchantment but rather because he witnessed the woman he loved being burned at the stake.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He is revealed to be this in episode 6. He only needed Fena to find Eden.

    Kei
Voiced by: Koji Yusa (Japanese), Keith Silverstein (English)

  • Advertised Extra: The Goblin Knights are all terrified when they learn the true nature of their mission and that Kei is coming to enforce it. However they never have to fight him because he doesn't catch up with them until the epilogue, where Yukimaru peacefully gives him the sword Kusanagi.
  • Aloof Older Brother: Kei is Shitan’s older brother. He doesn’t think very highly of his younger brother.
  • The Dreaded: Just the mention that Kei is coming for them strikes fear into the Goblin Knights.
  • Master Swordsman: He trained Yukimaru and is even better than him.
  • The Unfought: He never ends up being fought. The epilogue shows he was talked down by the Seven after being given Kusanagi.

Blue Army

    Abel Bluefield
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fena_pirate_princess_abel_bluefield.jpg
Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa (Japanese), Miho Okasaki (Young Abel - Japanese), Ryan Nicolls (English)

  • Anti-Villain: He's after the same goal as Fena, and most of his kills are against people who've wronged her in one way or another. He's a villain due to his unstable mental state and intense jealousy of anyone else bringing Fena to Eden.
  • Asshole Victim: Most of his kills involve people who deserved their fates in some way or another.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Abel is the illegitimate son of a king, a commander in the Royal Navy, and an excellent fighter.
  • Bad Boss: He kills Maxiver Jr. when he fails to capture Fena. Then he hires O’Malley to bring him Fena unharmed and refuses to pay her for bringing her with a tiny cut on her throat. In episode 11 he shoots his own ship’s captain in the back for getting distracted by Eden’s treasure troves.
    • Justified in its own way since the said captain called Fena a prostitute and ordered his men to have her thrown in the brig in Episode 7 while she was having an emotional breakdown, regardless of the fact that she was Abel's guest; the news may have reached Abel, who decided to kill him in retaliation.
  • Badass Boast: When saving Fena from a jealous O'Malley, he flat out tells the latter that he can kill her easily even if she tries to use Fena as a shield.
Abel: "I think you already know this, but hiding behind her will do you no good. At this distance, I could easily shoot the wings off a fly."
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Eden brainwashes him into psychosis when he enters it with turbulent thoughts.
  • Bridal Carry: He does with Fena when he saves her from O'Malley.
  • Cultured Badass: A man with royal blood in his veins, he is nonetheless an expert combatant.
  • Dying as Yourself: After getting his arm sliced off by Yukimaru, Abel bleeds to death while being reunited with what appears to be Helena's spirit.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He specifically orders the crew of the Rumble Rose not to harm Fena when they capture her, and is angered when he sees the cut on her throat, which makes him go back on his word to pay them.
    • During Fena's time with Abel, he never harms her, or allows any harm to come to her; he even saves Fena from O'Malley when the latter tries to kidnap her in a fit of jealousy.
    • It is only when Fena is not within Abel's sights that O'Malley attacks her and tries to kidnap her; also, the ship Captain called Fena a prostitute and ordered his men to have her thrown in the brig in Episode 7 while she was having an emotional breakdown, while Abel wasn't around.
    • Abel appears to be the only protection Fena has while on board his ship.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • He loved - and still loves Helena - with all his heart, and her death is what sent him spiraling into darkness.
    • Played with Fena since she is the image of her mother, and he does everything to protect her during their time together.
  • Evil Brit: His English dub actor gives him a British accent.
  • The Evil Prince: His father is a king but he knows he’ll never inherit the throne. Still, he’s a royal and he’s a villain so he fits the trope.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Helena's death shattered him to the core.
  • Love Makes You Evil: It was his love for Helena that led Abel to his fall to darkness after her death.
  • Loving a Shadow: He doesn’t think of Fena as her own person, calling her “Helena” at least once. In their final confrontation at Eden he finally realizes this when Fena decides to protect Yukimaru, but doesn't take it well and decides to kill her too.
  • Mad Artist: Helena was his favorite muse. He is still obsessively working on same painting of her.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He had a sexual relationship with O’Malley and had no problem using her to achieve his goals or throwing her out when he was done with her. He’s also fine with blowing up her ship when she tries to retaliate.
  • Mind-Control Eyes/Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes suddenly turn a blood-red color and even his vision becomes clouded in red as he falls into a trance-like state while searching for Fena, indicating he might be under some sort of supernatural possession. It later turns out to be because Eden is an Empathic Environment that reflects the mental state of anyone who enters it. Abel's insanity ends up brought to the forefront, warping Eden into a hellscape.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He has an epiphany about how many bodies he's stepped over to get to Eden as he's dying.
  • Officer and a Gentleman:
    • His official job is “overseer of the colonies”. Despite being a villain he’s very cultured and gentlemanly, kind, and protective towards Fena.
    • He is also gentlemanly towards Angie when he saves her from getting hit by a bottle in Episode 1, warning Maxiver Jr. that he won't tolerate women being mistreated.
    • In Episode 1, he saves Angie from a bottle hurled at her by Maxiver Jr., asks her if she's alright, and berates Maxiver for his behaviour.
  • Through the Eyes of Madness: His latent insanity finally overtakes him by the penultimate episode, causing him to hallucinate Fena as Helena, and Yukimaru as Franz.
  • Tranquil Fury: He never raises his voice when confronting O’Malley, but his cold tone makes his already Badass Boast even more believable as he threatens to kill her if she harms Fena.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Subverted. He is initially protective of women, stopping Maxiver Jr. from attacking Angie with a bottle and treating Fena in a respectful manner. Violence towards women in general sets him off. However, he later shoots at O’Malley since she was clearly intending to kidnap and harm Fena. Then he destroyed her ship with a Wellington cannon, killing her entire crew which consisted of more women than men after O'Malley had given orders for the Rumble Rose to attack his ship.

    Cody
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fena_pirate_princess_cody.jpg
Voiced by: Yukine Yaehata (Japanese), Casey Mongillo (English)

  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: The season finale reveals that he is actually a resident of Eden, and thus his true form is not normally discernible to humans. He takes the form of Cody and Fena's adoptive father Franz for the sake of convenience and to help guide her towards her destiny.
  • Ambiguously Evil: He makes no secret of wanting the world to be destroyed and restarted and tells Fena her choice will only delay the end. On the other hand, he respects Fena's choice and does nothing to dissuade her from it. He may be a case of Blue-and-Orange Morality.
  • Ambiguously Human: As of Episode 11. Episode 12 confirms that he is a resident of Eden, making him a supernatural entity.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear whether he merely took on Franz's form to address Fena or if Franz was one of his identities, given that Franz is not Fena's true father and Franz was seen manipulating Helena into a relationship with the king in order to give birth to the Maiden of Choosing.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He's not a mere slave of the navy. He's actually the supernatural entity manipulating Fena, her mother, and her entire bloodline.
  • Creepy Child: He’s extremely stoic and serious, and seems to know something about Eden. It turns out that he might not even be a child, at least not in the traditional sense.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: Reveals himself at the end of Episode 11 to be "the writer of Fena's story", indicating that he's had a hand in much, if not all of, the events that have transpired thus far. Episode 12 reveals this to be an inversion. While he's been guiding Fena along on her journey to Eden as part of her intended destiny, the choices she made were hers alone and his intentions aren't inherently evil, just a Blue-and-Orange Morality version of deciding the world's fate.
  • Made a Slave: He was originally a slave until he was rescued by Abel. It was all according to his plan.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He appeared to Abel as a slave child on purpose to manipulate him into getting Fena to Eden.
  • Mouthy Kid: He makes the mistake of mouthing off to O’Malley and gets kicked through a door. Of course, given what he is, he didn't really have anything to worry about. Then again, it is possible that this incident was what ultimately decided O'Malley's fate in the story, and had she not done this, she might have lived longer.
  • Our Angels Are Different: It's implied that he is one, being that he is a resident of the Biblical Eden whose true form is incomprehensible to humans.
  • Secret Identity: "Cody" is merely an alias. He claims to be "an observer" when he appears before Fena in Eden. He later confirms in Episode 12 that he's a supernatural resident of Eden tasked with guiding Fena to her destiny as the Maiden of Choosing.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Does this during Episode 11, transforming into Fena's father Franz.

The Rumble Rose pirates

     In general
  • Amazon Brigade: The Rumble Rose is led by female captain Grace O’Malley, and her pirate crew is almost entirely made up of women.
  • Dark Action Girl: All of them can fight and all of them are villains.
  • Greed: Being pirates their main motivation is money, and it's part of what drives O'Malley's anger against Abel when he refuses to reward her for bringing him Fena.
  • Historical Domain Character: They’re based on famous female pirates from real life.
  • Pirate Girl: Unlike Fena these ladies actually are ruthless pirates who murder and plunder.
  • Uncertain Doom: In episode 7 Abel destroys the Rumble Rose, seemingly killing everyone on it. However the only corpses shown are unnamed background characters. At least three of the main pirates—Charlotte, Hannah, and Mary—are shown to be alive at the end of episode 12.

    Grace O’Malley
Voiced by: Rika Fukami (Japanese), Dawn M. Bennett (English)
  • The Captain: The captain of the Rumble Rose.
  • The Dragon:
  • Equal-Opportunity Evil: Her crew includes men and women of all ages and races.
  • Evil Redhead: It’s fitting that her hair is the color of blood.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She wears one over her right eye.
  • Greed: She works for the British Navy in exchange for money, and she believes that Eden is the location of El Dorado, the legendary city of gold.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: O'Malley becomes this when she thinks that Fena and Abel have a deeper connection than she was led to believe.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: When Abel refuses to pay her for capturing Fena and makes her leave his ship, she responds by trying to kidnap Fena. When that plan fails she tries to attack Abel’s ship. Unfortunately his cannon was bigger than hers.
  • Woman Scorned: The other reason for O'Malley turning on Abel at the end of Episode 6. She's been shown to have a very casual demeanor around him, was confirmed to be sleeping with him at the end of Episode 3, and angrily confronts Fena when she believes the latter has a deep connection with Abel. However, this anger results in her almost being shot by Abel, who orders her to leave.
  • Would Hurt a Child: When Cody gets in her way she kicks him through a door.

    Ching Shih
Voiced by: Ai Kineta (Japanese), Marin Miller (English)
  • Brawn Hilda: She is one of the tallest and most muscular of the pirates.

    Charlotte Barry
Voiced by: Marina Yabūchi (Japanese), Courtney Shaw (English)

  • French Jerk: In the English dub she has a French accent.
  • Perky Goth: Her earrings are shaped like orange skulls and spiderweb designs on her clothes.
  • Royal Rapier: Her weapon of choice is a rapier and she’s one of the more sophisticated pirates on the crew.

    Mary Read
Voiced by: Ayaka Nanase (Japanese), Stephanie Sheh (English)
  • Dating Catwoman: She falls for Enju.
  • Impossible Hourglass Figure: This is why Enju refuses to kill her.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Of all the female characters she wears the least amount of clothes and gets several fanservice shots.
  • No Sense of Direction: She has such poor directional skills that her captain exploits it. If she says to go in one direction, O'Malley will immediately have everyone go in the other direction.

     Hannah Snell
Voiced by: Hiyori Kouno (Japanese), Sarah Anne Williams (English)
  • Cold Sniper: She uses a rifle in battle and is able to hit Yukimaru
  • Little Miss Badass: She isn’t a child but she’s the smallest of the main pirate group.

Helena

Voiced by: Maaya Sakamoto (Japanese), Xanthe Huynh (English)

  • Burn the Witch!: This is how she died. She was the mistress to the king and after getting pregnant with his child (Fena) she ran off with a butler (Franz Houtman). She was eventually captured and burned at the stake, which drove Abel mad.
  • The Chosen One
  • Go Out with a Smile: She smiles peacefully at Abel when she’s burned at the stake.
  • The Lost Lenore: She’s this for Abel.
  • Missing Mom: She died not long after Fena was born.
  • Mystical White Hair: Her hair is just as light as Fena’s.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks almost exactly the same as Fena.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: She is a delicate, beautiful woman whose death gives Abel critical plot information and his reason for villainy.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: If she hadn’t told Abel about Eden right before she died he wouldn’t have gone looking for it. That being said, she did want to reunite with him, she just didn't know how gristly his fate would become trying to get there.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Helena and Franz both plotted to bring “La Pucelle” (Fena) into existence as part of a bigger plan to get to Eden. Helena is also very calm on the day of her death, knowing her mission is done and all she needs to do now is “return to Eden”.
