The Smith-Yang Clan (Current Generation)

    open/close all folders

    General
  • Alliterative Family: Matthew, Mei, Martin, Misty, and Max.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Implied. Suyin's great-great-grandfather was rumored to have been the last known sorcerer of the Yang clan but had to hide his powers for fear of persecution. Until Misty realized her powers, his descendants believed their magical ancestry to be a simple fairy tale.
  • Riches to Rags: The Yang clan was descended from rulers in China who wielded magic but after seemingly killing Wufong, they buried their secrets and immigrated to America, where they are now a normal, lower middle-class family whose most valuable possessions are antiques.

    Misty Smith-Yang
A teenage girl from Elmerton who develops a crush on Danny. She is also a rookie sorceress and despite her intelligence, she is very impulsive and envious of Star.
  • Abduction Is Love: She doesn’t see anything wrong with kidnapping Danny for a ritual to make him love her in “Bewitched”. To be fair, it's heavily implied it was due to Wufong influencing her.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Downplayed. She is not ugly and nowhere near as awful as Colette, but Danny is uncomfortable with Misty's crush on him because he's in a relationship and she's unable to stop trying to get his attention.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Granted, all she did was say no to a date with Tucker, but that girl wasn't exactly a sorceress who wanted to steal someone's boyfriend.
  • Aloof Big Sister: Inverted. She's been distant from her older brother Martin since even before he left for college.
  • Always Second Best: No amount of magic or scheming from her will help her steal Danny from Star unless it involves brainwashing, something even Wufong laments.
  • Anti-Villain: At her worst. Misty doesn't want to cause actual harm or do evil, nor does she desire power or revenge, she just wants to be loved. It's her less-than-safe or moral methods that make her a danger, as well as her stubbornness and impulsiveness that make her unpredictable. It doesn't help that her worst traits are brought out by those who want to abuse her powers and wishes for their own ends. Even so, Misty is willing to help Team Phantom fight even bigger threats (especially if she's the cause of them, like Shi and an empowered Colette).
  • Arbitrary Scepticism: Despite living near a haunted town with its own superhero, she initially did not believe that magic was real until she discovered her powers.
  • Ascended Extra: She was a nameless extra that Tucker tried to ask out in "13" before becoming a character.
  • Asian and Nerdy: She's of Chinese descent and a straight-A student.
  • Attempted Homewrecker: She doesn't think a spoiled girl like Star deserves a great guy like Danny and tries to steal him from her even by magical means.
  • Bait-and-Switch: While it seemed she would learn the error of her ways at the end of "Envied", Misty faked amnesia in order to continue her crusade to claim Danny, her obsession with taking him from Star growing.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Misty is so used to guys who are mean or use her for homework that she became obsessed with Danny, because he is the first genuine Nice Guy she met and she's increasingly desperate not to lose him.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Claiming she is envious of Star over Danny, which she denies.
    • Misty also did not take it well when Star said that she has issues.
    • She was furious at Colette making a racial slur against her, on top of all her other reprehensible deeds. Misty even cast a spell to strike Colette with lightning in retaliation.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: The "Nice" part is zigzagged but Misty still has a moral compass and no problem using magic to embarrass Colette or electrocute her with lightning after being pushed too far by the Spoiled Brat’s classist and racist insults.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: While she's not actively trying to be a villain, Misty holds the mistaken belief that her powers make her dangerous and are capable of bettering her life and winning Danny's love. As smart and adept as she is, her impulsive nature and naïve belief in easy shortcuts to make her life more preferable repeatedly prove to be more of a hinderance than anything. This also comes with her being easily manipulated by entities far more cunning and morally bankrupt than she is.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: After she fakes her amnesia, she acts more civil with Star, who is unaware that she doesn't mean it.
  • Broken Ace: She is a beautiful girl who excels academically and also at magic. However, she has many, MANY issues such as her family's financial struggles, lack of friends, being abandoned by her father and all the enormous pressure her mother places on her.
  • Canon Character All Along: It takes recognizing Tucker to reveal she's the girl he hit on from the post-theme song opening scene of "13".
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Towards Danny.
  • The Corruptible: She was influenced by both Shi and Wufong (through her spell book) to sink to some serious lows in her desire to be with Danny.
  • Cute Witch: She is a sorceress, as well as a pretty teenage girl.
  • Dark Action Girl: She is a teenage sorceress and not afraid to use magic to get what she wants.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Misty is a Mage Born of Muggles, the first member of the Yang clan in ages to develop magic. While under most circumstances she'd be the protagonist of her own story, she's instead unwittingly an antagonist in Danny's. Unlike other characters of this trope, including its Codifier Hermione Granger, Misty keeps her powers a secret from her entire family, has no friends or support group to fall back on, no mentor or instructor to go to for advice and lessons or even friendly fellow magic users to commiserate with, an inability to make proper connections with others, and an extremely impulsive mindset. Misty is essentially what would happen if a normal girl with a less than stellar life, limited ability to socialize, and lack of impulse control developed magic: someone who irresponsibly relies on magical shortcuts to improve her lot, no matter how many times they backslide and lead to disaster, and is consistently manipulated into aiding others' malevolent agendas.
  • The Determinator: Deconstructed. Misty will not rest until she's won Danny's heart, refusing to accept that he's in love with Star and seems uncomfortable around her.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu: Even when Colette has ghost powers, Misty refuses to be pushed around by her and has no problem insulting her to her face.
  • Dogged Nice Girl: She has a crush on Danny, but she doesn't have a chance due to his love for Star.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: When Danny Phantom arrives to help with Colette, claiming Starlight Spirit called him, Misty remembers that Starlight and Phantom are a couple... and believes that Star is two-timing Danny Fenton with Phantom, not realizing they are the same person. Team Phantom gets annoyed with Misty jumping to the wrong conclusion despite the evidence in front of her.
  • Driven by Envy: Most of her antics are a result of her envy towards Star for her looks, status, and being Danny's girlfriend.
  • Easily Forgiven: Downplayed. Our heroes don't actually forgive her fully, but because they think she has no memory of what happened, they decide not to punish her for it.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: When Misty's family finds out what she and Wufong are planning to do to Danny in "Bewitched", they team up with Team Phantom to stop them but also to talk some sense into Misty since they insist that she isn't evil, just misguided. Ultimately, they're proven right.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Again, "evil" is a stretch, but one of her redeeming qualities is that she genuinely loves her family. While working with Shi, Misty planned to use her powers make them all rich so they could move out of Elmerton into a better home. Her turning against her family in "Bewitched" due to her bottled up resentment and believing they'll get in her way is a clear sign of Misty going off the deep end due to Wufong's influence. She almost comes to her senses when Martin empathizes with her, and finally breaks away from Wufong after accidentally hurting Max during her rampage and seeing how callous he is towards her little brother's well-being.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Misty isn't truly evil, but she is willing to do unethical things to get what she wants. However, she refuses to let anyone get hurt during her quest, including Star.
    • Her primary plan was to scare Star into leaving town so she could have Danny all to herself, but she didn't want Star to get hurt or killed in the process.
      • In "Envied", Misty seemed horrified that her spell could've made Star allergic to the food that she was eating and was visibly relieved that no harm befell her upon realizing Star had no allergy.
      • In "Empowered", she was so alarmed at the life-threatening danger Colette posed to Star, Danny, and even the world thanks to the powers Misty granted her that she didn't hesitate to work with Star and Team Phantom to rectify her mistake.
    • She cannot stand Colette Bevier, and has no qualms using spells to give her bad luck or inflict physical harm on her after being insulted by the French Spoiled Brat one too many times. Misty even genuinely sympathizes with Star for having Colette as a stepsister.
    • While Misty doesn’t intervene, she’s disturbed by the vicious No-Holds-Barred Beatdown Star gives Colette in “Empowered”.
    • She won't have children, even if it's with Danny, until she's old enough to get married.
  • Expy: Her role is similar to that of Sadira from Aladdin: The Series. Both of them have an unreciprocated crush on the main character and, upon learning they can use magic, decide to use that to claim him as their lover. Both women also have multiple redemption fake-outs before making a Heel–Face Turn for good.
  • Fatal Attractor: While pretty, she has had bad luck with boys in the past; those who were interested in her were either weird, nerds, or just creepy, while those she liked were either already taken or just using her intelligence to get a good grade. Her finding Danny to be her ideal boyfriend, only to learn he was dating Star was the last straw.
  • The Fettered: What keeps her from crossing into outright villainous territory is that she refuses to physically harm others, especially with magic, even Star. Colette is the sole exception to the rule since Misty finds her MUCH more unbearable than she ever did Star for her elitist attitude and racist insults, so she uses magic to repeatedly humiliate Colette in public, teleport her to the middle of the city dump, and strike her with lightning.
  • First Kiss: Misty takes advantage of Danny being frozen in time to kiss him on the lips, making him her first kiss without his knowledge.
  • Foil: She's another girl Tucker hit on who likes Danny, albeit she differs from Star, Valerie, and Colette.
    • To Star. They are both beautiful girls in love with Danny. However, Star is Danny's girlfriend while Misty's feelings are unrequited. Star is from an upper-class family while Misty's family is lower middle-class at best. Both also live with one parent; Star lives with her father and has a half-brother from her mother she's distant with, whereas Misty has a brother and lives with her mother while her father is absent.
    • To Valerie. Both girls have/had a thing for Danny, who is now in love with Star. Valerie maturely let Danny and Star be together since she wanted them to be happy. Misty, on the other hand, tries to sabotage their relationship out of jealousy.
    • To Colette. Both girls are completely besotted with Danny while Loving a Shadow and hate Star for irrational reasons, but they differ in several ways. Colette comes from Old Money and has an impressive pedigree through her father, who spoils her rotten, while her mother is absent from her life, she quickly ingratiates herself with the A-Listers, and is only fixated on Danny because he rejected her advances. As noted above, Misty comes from a much more modest background, her father is completely absent from her life while her mother is an Education Mama who relentlessly pushes her towards scholastic excellence, she has no friends, her family has a Secret Legacy in being descended from actual magic users, and she's attracted to Danny partly because he represents an escape from her miserable life in her eyes. While they both resort to Relationship Sabotage to claim Danny, Colette does so with her wits and money while Misty uses her innate magic.
  • Forceful Kiss: Misty kisses Danny without his awareness or consent thanks to time being stopped. While Danny doesn't fully know what's happening, he feels uneasy and disgusted enough to want mouthwash at one point. He's naturally indignant when Misty reveals it was her.
  • Freudian Excuse: Her mother is a strict taskmaster who gives her little freedom. Misty also says she has no friends, likely because of this. It makes sense why she has a poor understanding of how to deal with her feelings for Danny and latent magical powers. The lack of reliable and supportive role models/peers in her life also leads her to turn to questionable entities for guidance and validation.
  • Friendless Background: She doesn't have any friends or people she's affiliated with outside her family, partially due to her mother, and partly because of her own insecurities and having No Social Skills.
  • Genius Ditz: While Misty is undoubtedly Book Smart, being a good student and able to teach herself magic by studying her family's tomes, her inexperience and personal flaws cause her to make a lot of avoidable mistakes and prevent her from fully grasping the truth in certain situations. In "Empowered", both Team Phantom and her spell book lampshade how she can be rather obtuse for a supposedly smart girl.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Her eyes aren't normally green, but they flash green whenever her envy towards Star and desire for Danny grow to more obsessive levels.
  • Hidden Depths: She takes piano and violin lessons.
  • Hopeless Suitor: She falls hard for Danny, yet fails to see how deeply he loves Star.
  • Hypocrite: Misty claims that she doesn't want anyone to get hurt and that she has no ill intentions. However, she has no qualms using magic to freeze time in order to steal kisses from Danny and go on "dates" with him without his knowledge or consent, or sending ghosts to intimidate her rivals in order to get her way. Misty also believes that she is better girlfriend material for Danny because Star is selfish and doesn't deserve him. This is despite the fact that Misty doesn't know Danny nearly as much as Star, and her own actions are selfish since she's not taking anyone else's feelings into account during her plans, including her crush's.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: What Misty truly desires; she doesn't have any friends and her relationship with her family is strained so she latches on to Danny because he's the first genuinely decent guy she's met.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: One of the reasons she's eager to learn to be a sorceress.
  • Ignored Epiphany:
    • At first, it appeared that Misty Smith-Yang in "Envied" realized how horrible her actions were when she was forced to confront the fact that Star was not the selfish girl Misty thought she was, nor did Star have the easy life that Misty believed she had due to her wealth, along with discovering the truth about Shi and Meilin's history. Despite this, Misty eventually showed that she learned nothing from the whole experience when she faked amnesia to escape the consequences of her actions and have a clean slate with Danny and Star. Misty also manipulated them by pretending to be innocent, acting friendly towards Star while secretly plotting to steal Danny for herself, still resenting Star despite learning of her own hardships. Star Lampshades this in "Empowered" when she wonders why Misty is still going to so much trouble to antagonize her and steal Danny despite having witnessed how "combining magic and envy" only drives away love.
    • Tragically double-subverted in "Empowered". After being caught in her latest scheme and forced to turn over her spell book, Misty was heartbroken that she had to give up her magic, but at the same time, she genuinely wanted to make amends with Danny and his friends. Also, after meeting Colette in person and realizing that Star WASN'T exaggerating on how awful she is, she truly felt remorseful for dismissing Star's woes. Seeing how much damage she caused by granting Colette's wish and getting called out by Star, Misty felt ashamed about how she was blinded by jealousy, especially since her actions nearly got Star killed and left Danny in the claws of an unstable Yandere. At the end of the fic, she honestly tries to let go of her vices, accept that she can't be with Danny, and become a better person despite her sorrow, finally seeming to have learned her lesson this time. Unfortunately, Misty's spell book then appears, revealing it is sentient and can't be destroyed by non-magical means. It preys on her insecurities over being ordinary, lingering resentment towards Star, and desire to be with Danny to make her take up magic again. The book also manipulates Misty into thinking that Star has not really forgiven her and hates her, and promises her a life with Danny by showing a (likely fake) vision of their future child. This ultimately causes Misty to abandon her fledgling efforts at redemption and throw away her chance at a possible friendship (or at least a truce) with Danny and Star; she doubles down on her selfish, obsessive, and spiteful ways, setting her up to become a more dangerous villain.
  • In Love with Love: She may not see it this way, but she seems to be more in love with the idea of being with Danny, rather than Danny himself.
  • Insistent Terminology: She is a sorceress, not a witch.
  • Jerkass Realization:
    • When an empowered Colette reveals she is Star's stepsister, Misty realizes Star was not exaggerating about her family issues. She begins to feel remorseful over her past misjudgement of Star and dismissal of her troubles.
    • When Star later wonders why Misty didn't learn anything from her experience with Shi, she admits that her envy and spite made her unwilling to lose Danny to Star and refuse to take the latter seriously at the time when she compared her own life to Misty's, but realizes it's not a good excuse.
  • Jerkass to One: She generally doesn’t want to harm anyone, even Star, but makes a serious exception for Colette because of the latter's elitism, racism, and murderously possessive treatment of Danny which exceeds even Misty's. She's fine with using magic to constantly humiliate Colette in public, teleport her to the middle of the city dump, and strike her with lightning.
  • Karma Houdini: Although she feels bad for all of the trouble that she caused, Misty doesn't get any comeuppance for almost getting Star either possessed or turned into the undead. She also fakes amnesia to get away with it and avoid repercussions.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: She's this compared to Colette. Both girls are jealous of Star and determined to steal Danny from her, convinced he actually loves them instead. However, Misty still has sympathetic qualities and possesses enough of a conscience to avoid going overboard, while Colette doesn't care who she has to trample on to fulfill her desires. Also, despite her idealized image of Danny, Misty ultimately likes him for who he is, while Colette only cares about him as a "challenge" and trophy that she aims to corrupt into becoming just like her. When it comes down to it, Misty isn't a malicious person at heart, with her worst actions the result of her being taken advantage of by genuinely evil beings, whereas Colette is completely rotten to the core and a blooming sociopath.
  • Likes Clark Kent, Hates Superman: Downplayed. She’s hopelessly infatuated with Danny Fenton but indifferent towards Danny Phantom, although she does admit he’s cute and deserves much better than a rotten Spoiled Brat like Colette.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Despite her tension with her mother, Misty clearly inherited Mei's stubbornness.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: In “Blackmailed”, Misty finds out Ember is a ghost and that she also has a crush on Danny.
  • Longing Look: She has sent a couple of these to Danny.
  • Love at First Sight: She was instantly smitten with Danny when he helped her out.
  • Love Makes You Evil: She's not evil per say, but her obsession to gain Danny as her boyfriend has made her act out and commit several morally questionable acts.
  • Loving a Shadow: She's hopelessly in love with Danny, whom she has yet to have an hour's worth of dialogue with.
  • Love Redeems: A familial version. In “Bewitched”, she comes to her senses and turns against Wufong after accidentally injuring her little brother Max which Wufong is indifferent about.
  • Mad Love: Not on the same level as Colette, but her feelings for Danny have some shades of this, especially when she becomes convinced by her spell book that it's "written in the stars" for him to be with her.
  • Mage Born of Muggles: She is the first sorceress of the Yang clan in centuries.
  • Mistaken Nationality: Colette repeatedly calls her Japanese in “Empowered” and doesn’t care when Misty corrects her about being Chinese.
  • Mutually Unequal Relation: Misty sees Danny as the guy of her dreams who will eventually become her husband, whereas he pities her at best and just wishes she would move on and leave him alone.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Misty has these a lot since her poorly thought out plans to get Danny and beginner's understanding of magic leads to nothing but disaster. The most notable examples include:
    • Setting free Shi in "Envied" to help her scare Star out of Amity Park only for him to betray her and try to make Star his bride by force so she teams up with Team Phantom to stop him.
    • Accidentally giving Colette ghost powers in "Empowered", requiring her to yet again team up with the heroes to return Colette to normal.
    • Being tricked by Wufong in an attempt to give him a new body with Danny's unwilling help in "Bewitched".
  • Named by the Adaptation: The girl Tucker hit on in "13" never said what her name was. Here, her name is "Misty Smith-Yang".
  • Nerves of Steel: In “Empowered”, she refuses to be intimidated by an empowered Colette and makes it clear she won’t grant any of her wishes.
  • Nice Girl: Her stalking of Danny and envy of Star aside, she’s ultimately just a lonely girl who doesn’t mean any harm on anyone (besides Colette, of course).
  • No Social Skills: This seems to be one of her biggest flaws, aside from her envy and impulsiveness. She doesn't seem to comprehend that her pining after Danny when he not only doesn’t return her feelings, but is already in a committed relationship, comes across as creepily possessive and invasive.
  • "Not So Different" Remark:
    • Star mentally notes that Misty's desire to use her powers to change her life and earn Danny's love reminds her of Vlad.
    • When defeating Shi, Misty is forced to see herself in him with his arrogant assumption that Meilin would choose him and allowing his envy to consume him.
  • No So Similar: To Colette. Both have an unrequited crush on Danny and are jealous of Star, wanting to steal him from her using questionable means, and have troubled family histories which spur their motives. However, Misty has enough of a conscience to avoid going too far as she strives to avoid collateral damage by not physically harming others while Colette doesn’t care who she steps on to get her way. Misty relies on her magic while Colette relies on her money and wits. Misty genuinely cares about her family despite their dysfunction and eventually reconnects with them while Colette treats her own stepmothers as pawns at best and has a very distant relationship with her biological parents. Misty's darkest actions are the result of her being manipulated by the real villains while Colette needs no such trigger.
  • Obliviously Evil: She genuinely doesn’t understand why it’s wrong to steal someone else’s boyfriend or use magic to try to break up a perfectly happy couple like Star and Danny.
  • O.C. Stand-in: She was originally a minor character who Tucker once hit on. In this series, she has become an Anti-Villain and a rival towards Star for Danny's affection.
  • Outside-Context Problem: The fact that she is a sorceress and not a ghost makes her a more difficult adversary for Team Phantom to deal with since they can't exactly trap her inside the thermos.
  • Outside-Genre Foe: She is the first sorceress that Team Phantom has faced as an enemy.
  • Parental Issues: She has a difficult relationship with her mother due to Mei's Control Freak tendencies. Misty also admits in "Bewitched" that her father had little presence in her life even before he walked out on them, and she's never had a steady paternal figure. This plays a part in how Wufong is able to easily manipulate her.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • In “Empowered”, she’s willing to stand up to an empowered Colette to save Danny and protect Amity Park.
    • She's accepting of the Fentons' eccentricities and hopes to get along with them if she and Danny marry, even defending the couple to Wufong.
    • In “Blackmailed”, she teams up with Team Phantom to clear their names and save Danny from Colette, also to get payback on Colette for framing them and blackmailing Danny into dating her.
  • Power Perversion Potential: She's not shy about using magic to steal kisses from Danny without his knowledge.
  • Psychoactive Powers: Her powers can destroy anything she touches and other objects in the vicinity if she's angry enough.
  • Psychological Projection: She deems Star to be too selfish to deserve Danny, using ulterior means to make him stay with her, and in general obsessed with him, all of which describe Misty rather than Star.
  • The Resenter: Towards Star for having the seemingly easy life Misty doesn’t due to her wealth, beauty, and popularity, on top of the affections of Danny (the first boy Misty ever liked). And later, being a beloved heroine. While she soon discovers that Star has since reformed from her A-Lister days and struggles with her own share of personal problems, Misty's resentment (often amplified by outside forces) prevents her from fully accepting this.
  • Secret-Keeper: She learns Star is Starlight Spirit in "Empowered", and despite resuming her plotting, Misty doesn't seem to have any plans to reveal her secret identity.
  • Selective Obliviousness: She chooses to vilify Star, not seeing how sincere the latter is when it comes to loving Danny. Star calls her out on this in "Empowered" when Misty is quick to assume she's cheating on Danny, and is actually disappointed to learn it isn't the case. In "Bewitched", she’s even willing to believe Danny is only dating Star because the latter cast a spell on him.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She only likes Danny Fenton but she does find Danny Phantom cute.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She develops feelings for Danny due to him taking the time to stand up for her.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: She's so fixated on Danny that everything she does is to get him to notice her.
  • Stalker with a Crush: She uses Shi to spy on Danny so that she can learn more about him.
  • Super Gullible: She's quite guilty of this trope, as she believed everything Shi told her until he betrayed her. She also bought Danny's story about Star being in a Boyfriend Bluff relationship with his ghost half rather easily. Her spell book takes advantage of this by showing Misty fake visions of Star refusing to forgive her, and her and Danny as a married couple, which she doesn't even question.
  • Sympathy for the Hero: Misty feels sorry for Star and Danny for having to deal with someone as awful as Colette.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: Most of the conflict in her fics usually happen due to her not thinking her plans through, or impulsively using her magic to get her way, without considering that they might not turn out the way she expects them to.
  • The Unfavorite: "Bewitched" reveals she sees herself as this since her mother always seemed to view Misty as a disappointment compared to her brothers.
  • Token Wizard: Team Phantom decide to let Misty keep her spell book since her magic could come in handy in the future.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After “Bewitched”, she’s given up her unhealthy fixation with Danny, reconnected with her family, and formed an uneasy truce with Team Phantom.
  • Villain Has a Point:
    • Jealousy and possessiveness aside, she is right that Danny deserves much better than someone as awful as Colette.
    • While it doesn't excuse her actions, Misty correctly points out that for all of Star's issues, she still has it easier because at least her absent mother came back and is trying to redeem herself, whereas Misty's absent father never looked back after abandoning her.
  • Unknown Rival: Star has no idea Misty yearns for Danny's affections and is using supernatural means to get them. She manages to get Misty to back down in "Empowered" until the spell book steps in.
  • Yandere: She becomes this to Danny overtime, especially after her spell book begins influencing her. By "Bewitched", her obsession has reached a point where she plans to marry and start a family with Danny, while wanting not only Star, but all of Team Phantom out of the picture in order to have him for herself.

     Mei
Misty's overbearing mother who constantly puts pressure on her. She is arguably the biggest source of stress for her daughter.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Her strict and nagging ways, along with her tendency to act intense around others, are a great source of embarrassment for Misty.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Gender-Inverted. Mei would prefer her daughter not to have a boyfriend until she's of legal age, and Misty mentions her attitude has scared off boys in the past.
  • Control Freak: She is shown to be very strict and has a tendency to micromanage her family's lives, especially her daughter's.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Hinted.
  • Education Mama: Mei demands perfect grades from her children and that they spend any free time they have studying, as well as making sure they excel at everything.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In her very first scene, Mei yells for Misty to come down for breakfast when she's 3.5 minutes late, refusing to let her sleep in and making her stick to a schedule even though it's Saturday. Mei later reminds her daughter to be home early to study despite Misty's protests that she's already completed her homework, extra credit, and aced her tests. All while dismissing her mother Suyin's advice to calm down.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She was willing to let Misty take some time off school and studying after she got injured.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Mother: Possibly, as Mei states that she doesn't want her daughter to date while she is still in high school, preferring that she studies instead. This also prevents Misty from doing anything outside of school or their family.
  • Helicopter Parents: Heavily implied, as she tends to hover over her daughter and micromanage every aspect of her life.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • She is more of a Control Freak than a Jerkass, but she correctly pointed out that Misty shouldn't go after a boy who already has a girlfriend.
    • While she is rather suffocating with her demands for her children's schoolwork and extracurriculars, Mei rightfully justifies that it's in their best interests so they'll get into a good college. Her desire isn't without merit considering the poor education quality in Elmerton, which is one of the reasons Misty wants to leave.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Despite the tension between Mei and her daughter, they're more alike than either want to admit, as Misty clearly inherited her stubbornness.
  • Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: Mei is set in her ways, extremely diligent, and keeps to a schedule every day while her mother Suyin is more lenient, open-minded, and has a generally laid back and casual demeanor.
  • Mama Bear: Despite her flaws, she is very protective of her children.
  • My Beloved Smother: She's very stifling to ensure her daughter meets her expectations, which understandably frustrates Misty to no end.
  • Parental Favoritism: Implied. Misty notes in "Bewitched" that Mei has always favored Martin to the point of treating him like a "prince" and doted on Max.

     Suyin
Misty's grandmother and Mei's mother. Her grandchildren call her "lao lao". Unlike her daughter, she is more laid back.
  • Cool Old Lady: She is much more relaxed than her daughter, and even lets Misty take some time off their swap meet stand to relax and have some fun.
  • Doting Grandparent: She loves her grandkids and often tries to convince Mei to ease up on her strict parenting, especially with Misty.
  • Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: Her daughter is a strict taskmaster while Suyin is more carefree and flexible.

     Max Smith-Yang
Misty's younger brother. He loves video games.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: To Misty, as he delights in getting on her nerves and reveals in "Bewitched" that he secretly reads her diary.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: He's genuinely concerned when Misty lashes out at their mother and grandmother, then runs away from home.
  • Baby Of The Bunch: He's the youngest member of his family at 10 years old.
  • Hidden Depths: He plays soccer.
  • Jabba Table Manners: He has poor table manners, such as talking with his mouth full.
  • Shipper on Deck: Becomes one for Misty and Danny after learning out about his powers and thinks it'd be cool to have a superhero for a brother-in-law. The Irony that someone genuinely wants the two of them to be together without any ulterior or malicious reasons after finally giving up her pursuit of him is not lost on a frustrated Misty.

     Martin Smith-Yang
Misty's older brother who is away at college.
  • The Ace: He seems to be perfect at everything, being good-looking, an intelligent and accomplished student, a skilled pianist, and on his way to a promising career after graduating college.
  • Asian and Nerdy: He attends a good college where he made the dean's list at least once.
  • Broken Ace: He confesses in "Bewitched' that he was under even more pressure to be a model son and perfect student until he burned out and dropped out of college as a result.
  • Cool Big Bro: He's shown to be a caring brother to his younger siblings, even trying to reach out to Misty when she's being uncharacteristically moody and withdrawn.
  • The Ghost: He has yet to appear in the fic series and was only mentioned in "Envied". He finally appears in "Bewitched".

     Matthew Eric Smith
Misty's estranged father and Mei's former husband.
  • Disappeared Dad: He divorced Mei three years prior to "Envied" and has been absent from his children's lives ever since, and Misty isn't even sure if he's alive or not. This seems to still affect his family in the present.
  • Parental Neglect: Misty reveals in "Bewitched" that he wasn't much of a father to her even before leaving; he spent most of his time out in the town or with his friends, and barely paid any attention to his family when he was home.
  • Unnamed Parent: His name wasn't revealed until "Bewitched".

The Yang Clan's Ancestors

     Aiguo
Shi's older brother who married Meilin. He is also Misty's direct ancestor from the era of the Qing Dynasty.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While he loved his brother, he was willing to turn Shi into stone as punishment for trying to kill him on his wedding night with Meilin, and the only reason he didn't destroy Shi was because Meilin begged him not to.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to his younger half-brother Shi's Cain, with Shi eventually trying to murder him out of envy over Aiguo's skills, reputation, and Meilin's affections.
  • Canon Foreigner: He has no direct counterpart from the animated series.
  • Nice Guy: He was a pleasant man who tried to be a good brother to Shi and even got him a job as a chef for Meilin's father despite his obnoxious attitude. This is why Meilin fell in love with him because he respected her feelings and opinions despite the sexist views on women in their time period.
  • Properly Paranoid: Aiguo placed a charm on Meilin when they were alive to protect her from dark magic and Shi in case his brother came back, so he can't summon her spirit unless she chooses to come.
  • Sibling Rivalry: He had a one-sided one with his younger half-brother, on Shi's side. Aiguo was the recipient of his half-brother's envy and hatred. Despite the fact that Aiguo tried to be nice to him, Shi hated him due to being their father's heir and perceived favorite, as well the object of Meilin's affections.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Shi was a Sociopath who only saw Meilin as a prize and was willing to destroy their entire village to get what he wanted, while Aiguo was a Nice Guy who genuinely loved and respected Meilin as a person and was responsible for defending their village.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: It's heavily implied that he was beloved and respected by his village during his lifetime, being a capable warrior and leader.
  • Victorious Childhood Friend: He knew Meilin since they were young, and they ended up marrying.

     Meilin
Aiguo's wife and the woman whom Shi wanted to marry. She is also Misty's direct ancestor from the time of the Qing Dynasty.
  • Brutal Honesty: Her spirit makes it very clear to Shi that she couldn't stand his entitled attitude even when she was alive and wants nothing else to do with him.
  • Canon Foreigner: She has no direct counterpart from the animated series.
  • Daddy's Girl: She was very close with her father because he respected her and her choices despite the chauvinism of their era.
  • Dude Magnet: Both Shi and Aiguo were interested in her for years.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While she liked Shi as a friend and tried to see the best in him, Meilin didn't approve of his rude, possessive, and jealous behavior towards everyone around her. Her spirit tells Shi she would've had her father fire him as his cook for his awful attitude if it weren't for his cooking skills and being Aiguo's half-brother
    • In the present, after temporarily returning as a spirit and realizing Shi wants to use an innocent girl as a vessel to resurrect her, Meilin is so shocked and disgusted that she rejects him one final time and tells him she never wants to see his face again, accepting that he is truly irredeemable.
  • The Gentleman or the Scoundrel: She chose the heroic Nice Guy Aiguo (The Gentleman) for actually treating her like a person over the Entitled Bastard turned jiangshi Shi (The Scoundrel), who only saw her as a trophy.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: While Meilin saw Shi as a friend, even she had limits when it came to his Jerkass behavior since she only kept him around as her father's chef because of his cooking talent and being Aiguo's brother.
  • Love Triangle: She was unwittingly in the middle of one between brothers Shi and Aiguo. She chose Aiguo.
  • Nice Girl: She is a kind woman who dearly loved her fiancé Aiguo and even stopped him from destroying Shi's statue form despite his horrible crimes in the hope that Shi could potentially reform.
  • Only Friend: Besides Aiguo, she was the only one who liked Shi despite how much of a jerk he was.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: This is why Meilin fell in love with Aiguo, since he was a Nice Guy who treated her like a person instead of a trophy, completely unlike Shi.
  • Turned Off By The Jerkass: She once cared for Shi as a friend and could've loved him too but was driven away by his obnoxious and possessive attitude towards her.
  • We Used to Be Friends: When Meilin's spirit returns, she makes it clear to Shi that she wants nothing to do with him anymore and hates him for the evil monster he's chosen to become.
  • You Monster!: Her spirit says this to Shi when she returns.
