Attempted Homewrecker

Go To

"I had the strangest dream: I dreamt that some psychopath was trying to break the two of you up. Luckily, I woke up, and I see that world is just as it should be."

Most people know better than to go after someone who's already taken; not only is it wrong, it can also lead to a lot of easily avoidable drama. Unfortunately, some people have no issue aggressively pursuing someone who's already taken, even if said taken person has made it clear that they aren't interested in having an affair or leaving their current partner. For the pursuer, the target of their affections will be theirs and they won't let a minor detail like "being spoken for" stop them.

The reasons for going after a taken person may vary; the pursuer could be an ex who refuses to let go of their past relationship. They might be a Gold Digger and/or a shallow person who has no problem stealing a rich and/or good-looking partner from someone else. Maybe they see their crush as their soulmate, with said crush's current partner being seen as a thief who "stole" what "rightfully" belongs to them. Alternatively, they aren't really interested in the person they're pursuing, they are more interested in hurting and/or one-upping the person whom they're attempting to steal from.

These characters' schemes to steal their target vary, but some of the more common ones include:

  • Trying to seduce their target via sex appeal, money, status or some other superficial quality.
  • Blackmailing the crush or the rival into breaking up.
  • Spreading lies about the rival or the crush to engineer a break-up.
  • Trying to put down the rival in order to convince the crush to date the admirer instead.
  • Offing the rival so the crush will be up for grabs.
  • If a female is harassing a male, they could try and lie about being pregnant in order to baby trap him. Alternatively, if the woman really is pregnant, she might claim that the baby is actually the man's.

Regardless of what method the admirer uses, their schemes will almost always fail. If the admirer uses seduction, the crush's love for their partner will prove to be stronger than base desire. If they attempt to use lies, the the trust between the two lovers will prove too strong for them to believe any baseless lies about the other. If they try blackmail, one or both parties will either take revenge or simply refuse to allow the admirer's threats to sway them. Expect the crush to declare that not only are they happy with their current lover, but that they also wouldn't date the admirer even if they were single.

Needless to say, these types of characters are unlikely to be portrayed in a sympathetic or likeable manner. While sometimes portrayed humorously, the humor comes more from the absurd lengths they'll go to to get their target and whatever karma they receive.

Sub-Trope of Abhorrent Admirer. See also Seduction-Proof Marriage when the target of the affections refuses this character's advances. Often overlaps with Stalker with a Crush, Mad Love, Entitled to Have You, and Yandere. Overlaps with Psycho Ex and/or Fair-Weather Ex if the admirer used to date the target of their affections or Wedding Smashers if the admirer tries to steal their crush during the wedding. May involve a Better Partner Assertion if the admirer tries to convince their crush that they would be a better partner. Compare And Now You Must Marry Me, which this trope might overlap with if the villain is trying to marry someone who is already in a relationship. Compare/contrast Serial Homewrecker, which this character might also be if they have successfully stolen other's partners before. Contrast Cuckold if they succeed, I Want My Beloved to Be Happy, where a character accepts that their crush is happy with someone else, The Mistress, Remarried to the Mistress, and Sympathetic Adulterer.

  • My-Otome: After Schwartz and Count Nagi de Artai take over the Garderobe Academy, Tomoe tells Shizuru that Natsuki was captured (a lie) and that she'd be well taken care of if Shizuru cooperated. Tomoe honestly thought this would make Shizuru fall in love with her. But Shizuru was well aware that Natsuki had escaped and only went along with Tomoe to flip the tables on her later. When Natsuki goes in on a rescue mission, Shizuru reunites with her unhesitatingly, to Tomoe's fury and frustration.
  • Ranma ½: Ranma and Akane's many admirers pursue them despite knowing they are engaged to one another. Their schemes range from sexual harassment to attempted murder. Despite how much Ranma and Akane may insult and attack one another, they are ultimately loyal to one another.
    • Ranma himself tries to be a homewrecker during the Ten Year Sauce story. Long story short, due to a series of mishaps and miscommunications, Ukyo believes Ranma is genuinely set on living up to a Childhood Marriage Promise, and so she moves into the Tendo Dojo, causing absolute hell as Akane's jealousy goes through the roof. So Ranma tries to drive off Ukyo by acting like an absolutely terrible husband figure, only for each attempt to backfire. Flipping the Table and calling her a bad cook? She doesn't even bat an eye, the Tendos save the food, and Soun beats him up for nearly spilling it. Coming home pretending to be drunk? She casually splashes him with cold water to sober him up. Putting lipstick kisses on his shirt collar? She catches him at it. She doesn't even bat an eye when he goes to Akane's room whilst declaring he's going to see his mistress. Of course, it doesn't help Ranma that Ukyo came to the conclusion earlier that Akane was forcing Ranma to try and break up with Ukyo...

  • Josie and the Pussycats: Josie James and Alan Mayberry have been dating steadily pretty much since Alan's introduction. This doesn't stop Rich Bitch Alexandra Cabot from trying to sabotage Josie and take Alan for herself. However, much of the series' comedy lies in Alexandra suffering repeated Backstab Backfires while trying to sunder the Josie + Alan couple. This dynamic extends into the Animated Adaptation in 1970 by Hanna-Barbera.

  • CONSEQUENCES (Miraculous Ladybug): Lila in the stories SUN'S WRATH and CAGED combines this trope with Incompatible Orientation; despite the fact that Adrien and Luka are in a relationship, she tries to break them up so she can be with Adrien. In SUN'S WRATH she attempts to kill Luka by pushing him in front of a car, while in CAGED she tries to blackmail Adrien into breaking up with Luka by threatening to ruin Adrien's social life. In both stories, she not only fails to win over Adrien, she also almost gets killed by an Akumatized Adrien (in SUN'S WRATH) or Luka (in CAGED) for trying to hurt the other.
  • Cut My Life Into Pieces, This Is My Last Resort has Lila convince Alya that Marinette has been trying to seduce Nino behind her back by spoofing Marinette's number. This works so well that Alya gets akumatized into Truth Bomb, resulting in her seemingly blowing her best friend sky-high.
  • Danny Phantom: Stranded: Colette is obsessed with Danny because, unlike Star's previous boyfriends who she was easily able to steal, he is faithful to Star and rebuffs Colette's advances. In Colette's mind, this makes him a challenge to overcome, while Danny just views her as an annoying mean girl who won't leave him and his girlfriend alone.
  • Elementary My Dear Natsuki: A My-HiME fanfic that puts Shizuru in the role of "consulting detective" in Victorian England, with Natsuki serving the Watsonian role, Tomoe Marguerite takes an interest in Shizuru when she witnesses Shizuru slaughter the heads of the Obsidian Order to protect Natsuki from them. To try and bring Shizuru closer to her, Tomoe frames Natsuki for murder, though she also makes sure that if Shizuru can unravel the clues and free Natsuki from the hangman's rope, they will all implicate her associate, Miya Clochette. When Natsuki and Shizuru confront Tomoe, Natsuki points out that they already have the evidence that will free her, and Tomoe might as well confess to the crimes. Tomoe attempts to appeal to Shizuru by pointing out that if she is captured and confesses, she will have to explain Shizuru's role in the deaths of several people, saying Natsuki would thus have Shizuru's neck in the noose when Tomoe testified. In the end, realizing that she couldn't drive a wedge between Natsuki and Shizuru, Tomoe decides to pull an If I Can't Have You…. Fortunately, Natsuki settles the matter with a Boom, Headshot! before Tomoe can mortally wound Shizuru.
  • King Explosion Murder The Shield Hero: Zenra, the prized botanist and former castle gardener, wanted Queen Mirella to be his wife despite the Queen already being married with two daughters. When she rejected him, he snapped and destroyed the castle gardens, resulting in him losing his job.
  • The Many Dates of Danny Fenton: Quite a number of bullies and villains attempt to steal Danny or his girlfriends away from the other.
    • In both the original story and its spinoffs, Dash tries to steal Danny's dates/girlfriends by bullying the latter or using his status as a football player. He always fails because the girls prefer a Nice Guy like Danny rather than an obnoxious bully like Dash.
    • Paulina tries to steal Danny once it's revealed that he's her superhero crush, Danny Phantom. Not only is Danny no longer interested in her, he also finds her persistence annoying and creepy. She continues to do this as an adult even though he's married to his chosen girl, to the point that in the timeline where Danny chose Makoto, he had to get a restraining order against Paulina. In the timeline where he married Kim, Paulina actually tried to sue Kim for "stealing" Danny from her, despite being married herself.
    • Bonnie tries to steal Danny once she finds out that he's the famous superhero Danny Phantom. In the timeline where he chooses Kim, Bonnie forcefully kisses Danny on the lips at prom, despite already having a boyfriend, which disgusts and angers him, Kim, Bonnie's boyfriend Brick, and everyone else who saw what she did. Even as an adult when she is married and has children of her own, she is still obsessed with Danny and hates Kim for "stealing him".
    • In TMDDF: After Many Dates: Danny and Kim, Camille Leon aggressively pursues Danny, even after learning he's with Kim. In the future, despite Danny being married to Kim, Camille sends him love letters from jail, which he eventually decides to stop reading.

  • Ranma Club:
    • Kuno, being a Casanova Wannabe, tries to steal the Winx girls away from Ranma, only to end up getting painfully rejected each time.
    • Mikado Sanzenin is portrayed as being this; like in canon, he has no qualms about kissing girls who are already taken. Unlike canon, rather than being treated like a ladies' man, he's portrayed as a creep who can't take no for an answer; he acts obsessively pushy towards the Winx girls for constantly rejecting him, despite them being in a relationship with Ranma. When he gloats that he has no qualms about kissing girls who are already taken, Bloom puts a curse on him that makes him incapable of kissing a girl without consent. When he tries to forcefully kiss a girl with a boyfriend, not only does the curse prevent him from doing so, but the girl is creeped out by the fact that some stranger tries to kiss her and is relieved when her boyfriend punched said stranger out.
  • In Stamford University: WARGAMES, an Alternate Universe of the WWE set at the titular University, Mandy Rose becomes an Abhorrent Admirer towards new student Dean Ambrose, constantly trying to seduce him and come on to him, even when he makes it clear that he's put his past womanizing ways behind him and is set on marrying cheerleader Alexa Bliss and starting a family with her. Initially, Mandy appears to have lines she refuses to cross, such as giving Dean some respectful distance when he and Alexa are in mourning for the miscarriage of their first child, but then later in the story she abandons such restraints and crosses the Moral Event Horizon by raping Dean and trying to get him to leave Alexis for her. And no, the writer makes it clear that Double Standard Rape: Female on Male doesn't apply here: Dean is clearly traumatized afterwards, and even more hellbent on defending himself and Alexa from a depraved individual like Mandy.

  • Earth's Children: While open relationships are considered normal in Zelandonii culture, Marona clearly has malicious intentions when she seduces Jondalar in The Land of Painted Caves, as it's well-known that Marona is bitter that Jondalar chose to mate Ayla over her and bears Ayla ill-will for this. Marona specifically waits until Ayla is preoccupied and often away from home to move in on Jondalar, taking advantage of his increasing loneliness and frustration. When Ayla catches them together, Marona gleefully rubs it in her face and appears to believe Jondalar will leave Ayla for her (or at least favour her from now on). She underestimates how much Jondalar loves Ayla, as he instantly realises what a stupid mistake he made and what Marona's true intentions were. He admits he was only interested in sex with Marona and doesn't feel anything deeper for her, so he's hardly going to ditch his wife and mother of his child for her.

However, while Putnam's Landing is devoid of eligible bachelors, it is home to more than a few Henpecked Husbands, and she comes to the conclusion that pursuing a discontented husband and offering herself to him as a superior mate is as moral as "to find a man in bondage and set him free." She identifies Harry Bannerman as her most promising target and spends most of the rest of the story pursuing an affair with him. While Harry does become a Sympathetic Adulterer, Angela never comes close to convincing him to leave his wife for her, and he only feels more guilty about their affair the longer it goes on.

When Sam confessing that her alleged affair was with the dog leads to her and Darrin having a fight, Rodney drops the ruse, thinking he's been proven right.
