Class Swap - Hope's Peak Academy

Monokuma

    Monokuma
Monokuma

The Headmaster of Hope's Peak Academy

  • And Your Little Dog, Too!: He told Teruteru that either he became his traitor, or he would have his mother killed.
  • Kick the Dog: Very prone to joke about a student who has been killed through an execution.
  • Rules Lawyer: He will gladly declare you the blackened if the murder can be traced back at you even if you barely contributed to it. He declares Akane and Kazuichi to be culpable for Nekomaru and Teruteru's respective deaths because they consciously gave the objects that killed them, even though both of them died accidently of their own hand when interacting with those objects. On the other end, he doesn't count Hiyoko as her own blackened, since even though she stole Kazuichi's drink, she was unaware of the poison contained inside.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Much like in canon, although this time he's being controlled by Chiaki Nanami rather than Junko Enoshima.

The Students

    In General

  • Adaptational Heroism: With the exceptions of Chiaki and The Ultimate Imposter, none of them are Ultimate Despairs in this AU.
  • Age Lift: Inverted. Because the Goodbye Despair students are part of Class 78 in this continuity, they are one year younger than in canon.
  • Dark Secret: Some of them are revealed in Chapter 2:
    • Mahiru: Posted several doctored photos under pretense of being completely unedited. Mahiru's narration explains that Monokuma took the line out of the context to make Mahiru look bad and that the edited photos in question are just a small part of a big album and are only slightly edited.
    • Hajime: Is suffering from amnesia and a second personality named "Izuru Kamukura".
    • Mikan: Has been physically abused so much, that she is conditioned to enjoy pain and harm.
    • Hiyoko: Won one of her traditional dance competitions by spiking her rival's drink with laxatives.
    • Sonia: Her family lineage is not the true inheritor to Novoselic's throne.
    • Peko: Is a hitwoman fully loyal to Kuzuryu clan and Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu personally.
  • Killed Off for Real: Because the Killing School Life takes place in the real world as opposed to a simulation like the Killing School Trip, any of the students that die in this story stay dead with no chances for revival.

    Mahiru Koizumi
Mahiru Koizumi

Ultimate Photographer

The protagonist of this story. The Ultimate Photographer and a participant of the Killing School Life. Mahiru defeats Chiaki, survives the final trial and escapes Hope's Peak Academy alongside Gundham, Hajime/Izuru, Nagito, Ibuki, Mikan and Ryota.
  • All-Loving Hero: Her most defining characteristic, being a kind and friendly girl who enjoys bringing hope to others with her photography, and tries to see the good in everyone, including all of the culprits, later she is even willing to offer a chance at redemption to Chiaki of all people, and is horrified by her execution.
  • Ascended Extra: She was killed off in Chapter 2 of the original Danganronpa 2. Here she is the protagonist.
  • Break the Cutie: She spends most of Chapter 3's Daily Life feeling miserable over Hiyoko and Sonia's deaths until Nekomaru shakes her out of it.
  • Camera Fiend: Completely expected from the Ultimate Photographer. Not only does she takes photos of the evidence during murder cases, but it also helps her greatly in the final trial when Monokuma gives everyone pictures of their school life to generate distrust; because she is the one who took all the photos from their time at Hope's Peak, she is the only one apart from whoever received a specific photo that does not appear on any of them and therefore the only one the other students can trust because they know she took the photos.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Mahiru has this reaction to Nagito calling her "The Ultimate Hope". The other survivors end up liking it though.
  • Hope Bringer: By far the most optimistic member of the main cast and refuses to give up hope even when confronted with the possibility that the world has been destroyed. Her refusal to give up in the face of despair inspires the others to gain the courage to defy Chiaki, earning her the title of Ultimate Hope amongst her fellow survivors.
  • Not His Sled: Mahiru falls under suspicion in the fifth trial due to her knowledge of the Ulitmate Imposter's existence, which Izuru told her about at the end of Chapter 4. You'd expect for her to cover for Izuru like Makoto did for Kyoko when the Mastermind tried to frame her for Mukuro's death in the original game, but instead she truthfully tells others that Izuru was the one who told her about the Ultimate Imposter.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She was the victim of the second murder case in the original Danganronpa 2. Here she survives the Killing Game (as the protagonist, no less!).
  • Tsundere: Behaves this way towards Hajime, constantly ragging on him for being an unreliable boy, yet it becomes clear he is one of her closest friends among the survivors.

    Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu

Ultimate Yakuza

The Ultimate Yakuza and a participant of the Killing School Life. Fuyuhiko is the victim of Chapter 1, being shocked to death with his own Death Trap by Chiaki.
  • Asshole Victim: Fuyuhiko is revealed to have been caught setting up a death trap to kill someone, only for his killer to use it to kill him.
  • Bait-and-Switch Boss: He is antagonistic towards the other students in Chapter 1's Daily Life. In spite of this, he ends up becoming the first victim.
  • Big Brother Instinct: It's revealed that his Motive Video showing his little sister Natsumi being held hostage was what finally pushed Fuyuhiko to try and commit murder.
  • Death by Adaptation: He was one of the survivors in the original Danganronpa 2. Here he's the victim of Chapter 1. The Hope's Peak Academy Killing Game taking place in the real world rather than in a simulation like the Jabberwock Island Killing Game also means that he's gone for good.
  • Demoted to Extra: A survivor in canon who happened to be one of the more well-developed main characters, here he's the first victim. He doesn't even get to have a proper interaction with Mahiru.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Due to his paranoid, abrasive, and threatening behavior, as well as the fact that he dies before he can show off any of his Hidden Depths, none of the other students except Peko are willing to deal with him, and he isn't mourned nearly as much as some of his fellow classmates, with other characters like Hiyoko and Hajime making insulting remarks about him after his death during the investigation and trial.
  • High-Voltage Death: Chiaki kills him by electrocuting him with his own murder trap.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Fuyuhiko is killed by Chiaki using his own death trap to shock him to death.
  • The Paranoiac: Fuyuhiko spends almost all of Chapter 1 utterly convinced that the others will attempt to harm him and avoids them because he sees all of them as potential threats.

    Ibuki Mioda
Ibuki Mioda

Ultimate Musician

The Ultimate Musician and a participant of the Killing School Life. Ibuki survives the final trial and escapes Hope's Peak Academy alongside Mahiru, Gundham, Hajime/Izuru, Nagito, Mikan and Ryota.
  • The Heart: Even when the students keep dropping like flies, Ibuki always tries to look for ways to cheer up the survivors.
  • The Nicknamer: Gives many nicknames to Teruteru. She also calls Hajime "Haji-man".
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She was the second victim of the third murder case in the the original Danganronpa 2. Here she survives the Killing Game.

    Chiaki Nanami
The Ultimate Imposter

Ultimate Gamer/Ultimate Imposter

The Ultimate Gamer and a participant of the Killing School Life. Chiaki is the culprit of Chapter 1, having shocked Fuyuhiko to death after walking in on him setting up a trap, and is executed by Monokuma, being incinerated alive by a cardboard Monokuma dragon. It's later revealed that "Chiaki" was actually the Ultimate Imposter in disguise, and they helped the Mastermind, the real Chiaki Nanami, start the both the Tragedy and the Killing Game, but was betrayed by her in the end.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Not only is the Ultimate Imposter a blackened in this continuity, they also joined Ultimate Despair willingly instead of being brainwashed into it.
  • Death by Adaptation: Zigzagged. The Ultimate Imposter dies as the culprit of Chapter 1 rather than the victim. The Hope's Peak Academy Killing Game taking place in the real world rather than in a simulation like the Jabberwock Island Killing Game also means that they are gone for good.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Is burned alive as part of their execution rather than receiving numerous stab wounds. This is also Foreshadowing that it's not actually the real Chiaki Nanami being executed, as unlike Peko's execution, this one is completely different to the one seen in Danganronpa 2.
  • The Dragon: They are the Mastermind's number one aide.
  • Fat Bitch: Although the narration doesn't make it immediately apparent, they're quite chubby, and are The Dragon to the real Chiaki, who is the Mastermind.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • When meeting Chiaki, Mahiru mentions how she looks like what Mahiru would expect of a gamer, a stereotype that would better fit the Fat and Proud Imposter than Chiaki.
    • Chiaki's Research Lab is filled with salty snacks, which she expresses a great interest in. Chiaki was never shown to be much of a Big Eater in Danganronpa 2, but the Ultimate Imposter was.
    • Unlike Peko, whose execution is almost the same as in Danganronpa 2, Chiaki has a brand-new execution in this story, hinting at the fact that this is not the real Chiaki.
    • Her execution involves Chiaki cosplaying as various video game characters. What is an imposter if not someone cosplaying as somebody else?
    • Mahiru remarks that Chiaki didn't seem scared during her execution until the moment where the dragon started breathing fire on her. The Ultimate Imposter fully believed Chiaki would save them until she pulled a Bait-and-Switch at the last possible moment before their death.
    • Mahiru mentions how Chiaki always keeps her hoodie fully zipped. Not only is Chiaki's hoodie unzipped in the original game, but all of the Ultimate Imposter's outfits are slightly different from the person they are impersonating. When the real Chiaki shows up, her hoodie is indeed unzipped.
    • In Chapter 5, Izuru discovers the weak point of the student handbook when he destroys Chiaki's by exposing it to extreme heat in the sauna. Why would Chiaki's handbook work properly before that if she had it with her when she was incinerated during her execution?
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Chiaki states that she was the Ultimate Imposter's first and best friend, and that they went along with her plan of starting a Killing Game and causing the Tragedy because Chiaki had caused them to fall into Despair.
  • Oh, Crap!: Upon realizing than Chiaki has no intention of just faking their death as noted by Mahiru's narration:
Mahiru's narration: She didn't seem scared... Even as the thing's giant mouth opened to seemingly try and bite her in half... Before a look of complete horror overtook Chiaki, as instead of the dragon's mouth coming down, a wall of fire streamed out of it and covering her completely.
  • Woman on Fire: The woman part is debatable since the Ultimate Imposter is a genderless individual, but they, disguised as Chiaki, die by being burnt alive by Monokuma's cardboard dragon.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Chiaki has Monokuma execute them after they are found guilty in the first class trial, as a way of both following the rules and faking her death.

    Nekomaru Nidai
Nekomaru Nidai

Ultimate Team Manager

The Ultimate Team Manager and a participant of the Killing School Life. Nekomaru is the second victim of Chapter 3, falling to his death after struggling to break free from the chains that had him bound to the bed of Hajime's research lab after seeing Peko kill Akane in front of him, which causes the floor to fall apart and snap his neck upon contact with the ground.
  • Death by Adaptation: Zigzagged. Nekomaru is the second victim of Chapter 3 (although his body's the one that's found first), dying one chapter earlier than in canon. The Hope's Peak Academy Killing Game taking place in the real world rather than in a simulation like the Jabberwock Island Killing Game also means that he's gone for good.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: He gives Mahiru a Rousing Speech when she is left feeling miserable over Hiyoko and Sonia's demises.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Although the circumstances are different, Nekomaru's cause of death is still a result of him falling from a great height.
  • Say My Name: His last words before falling to his death are him screaming Akane's name after Peko kills her in front of him.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: He gives this speech to Akane after she tries to kill him for Monokuma's money prize in order to help her family, asking her if she can consider herself part of her own family if she is going to kill someone for eleven million dollars.

    Hiyoko Saionji
Hiyoko Saionji

Ultimate Traditional Dancer

The Ultimate Traditional Dancer and a participant of the Killing School Life. Hiyoko is the victim of Chapter 2, dying after drinking a poisoned orange juice she took from Kazuichi, which was given to him by Sonia in an attempt to kill him.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Quickly latches onto Mahiru and becomes her best friend due to her being the first person to ever show her kindness with no ulterior motive.
  • Best Friend: To Mahiru. Her death hits Mahiru hard, not to mention seeing her pale, cold, conservated corpse in the Bio Lab during Chapter 6.
  • Death by Adaptation: Zigzagged. Hiyoko is the victim of Chapter 2, dying one chapter earlier than in canon. The Hope's Peak Academy Killing Game taking place in the real world rather than in a simulation like the Jabberwock Island Killing Game also means that she's gone for good.
  • Decoy Protagonist: More like Decoy Deuteragonist. She is shown to have a strong bond with Mahiru and helps her out during the first murder investigation, and yet she is the victim of Chapter 2.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Hiyoko is poisoned rather than having her throat slit.
  • Older Than They Look: Mahiru mentions how she looks too young for a high schooler, and since this killing game takes place in the real world that means Hiyoko didn't go through a growth sprout during her time at Hope's Peak Academy like she did in canon.
  • Running Gag: Hiyoko constantly steals Kazuichi's breakfast during Chapter 2. This ends up getting her killed when she unknowingly drinks a poisoned orange juice Sonia had given to Kazuichi.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Thanks to Mahiru's friendship, Hiyoko makes a genuine effort to cooperate with the other members of Class 78, to the point that she even stops bullying Mikan.

    Hajime Hinata
Hajime Hinata/Izuru Kamukura

Ultimate ??? (Ultimate Vessel/Ultimate Talent)

A Student incapable of remembering his talent and a participant in the Killing School Life. He is later revealed to have a Split Personality in the form of Izuru Kamukura. Izuru is convicted as the culprit behind Nagito's death in Chapter 5, leading to Monokuma trying to execute Hajime by spraying him with acid, but the execution is sabotaged and Hajime ends up surviving, with it later being revealed that Nagito's "death" was a Faking the Dead plan between him and Izuru. In the end, Hajime is revealed to have been a talentless student from Hope's Peak's Reserve Course who went under surgery to become Izuru Kamukura, an individual who possesses every single talent known. The project was a success, but to the surprise of everyone, Hajime's original personality managed to reemerge from within Izuru, causing Izuru to become a Split Personality. This gave Hajime the title of Ultimate Vessel, and he was enrolled into Hope's Peak Academy's main course as a result. Hajime survives the final trial and escapes Hope's Peak Academy alongside Mahiru, Gundham, Ibuki, Nagito, Mikan and Ryota.
  • Adaptational Badass: In canon, Hajime's original personality only managed to reemerge in Izuru after he entered the Neo World Program. Here, Hajime reemerged on his own, something which was completely unexpected and earned him the title of "Ultimate Vessel".
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: It's revealed that Izuru began to warm up to his fellow classmates after he and Hajime were made members of Class 78.
  • Character Catchphrase: Izuru will always let out a "how boring" on more than once occasion.
  • Demoted to Extra: Downplayed. Though Hajime's no longer the main protagonist here, the mysteries surrounding Izuru and his forgotten talent play a major role in the overarching plot surrounding the Killing Game.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • Not him, but the Steering Committee managing the Kamukura Project. Hajime's original personality was supposed to be completely erased after Izuru was implanted into him, but it managed to reemerge anyways, causing Izuru to become a Split Personality of Hajime. The Steering Committee decided to give Hajime the title of "Ultimate Vessel" and enroll him in Class 78 as a result.
    • Izuru himself is victim of this in the fourth trial, where he is pushing to vote for Teruteru as the blackened as he died by accidentally electrocuting himself and is genuinely surprised when Kazuichi is declared to be the blackened because of a technicality.
  • Full-Name Basis: Izuru calls the other students by their full names.
  • Neutral No Longer: Following the fourth trial and Kazuichi's demise because of a technicality, Izuru vows to end the Killing Game seeing it now as unfair. He later cooperates with Nagito in Chapter 5 to create a false trial in order to force the game to end.
  • Rapid Hair Growth: After learning of Izuru, Hajime notes how his hair grows abnormally fast every day that passes. By the time Chapter 5 rolls, he has Izuru's characteristic long hair, which is cut back to his original hairstyle during his failed execution.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Played With. Aside from the different tone of voice and body language, one way to tell Izuru apart from Hajime is by the former's red eyes. That said, he never tries to kill anyone (the closest thing being helping Nagito in his Faking the Dead scheme) and ultimately ends up siding with the surviving students against the Mastermind.
  • Ship Tease: He gets plenty of this with Mahiru throughout, it's also heavily implied he had romantic feelings for Chiaki.
  • Split Personality: After Hajime's original personality managed to reemerge on his own following the Kamukura Project, Izuru became this.

    Sonia Nevermind
Sonia Nevermind

Ultimate Princess

The Ultimate Princess and a participant of the Killing School Life. Sonia becomes the culprit of Chapter 2 after Hiyoko drinks a poisoned orange juice that she had prepared for Kazuichi and is executed by Monokuma, being impaled by a mob of Monokumas holding up pitchforks.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Downplayed. She attempts to poison Kazuichi and accidentally kills Hiyoko instead, but she only does so in an attempt to protect a state secret that could trigger a civil war and accepts her death gracefully once she is caught.
  • Anti-Villain: She attempts to poison Kazuichi with an orange juice (which ultimately ends up killing Hiyoko instead) in an attempt of keeping her dark secret of her family not being the legitimate heirs to the throne of Novoselic in hopes of preventing a Civil War should the rest of the world learn of it.
  • Death by Adaptation: She was one of the survivors in the original Danganronpa 2. Here she's the culprit of Chapter 2. The Hope's Peak Academy Killing Game taking place in the real world rather than in a simulation like the Jabberwock Island Killing Game also means that she's gone for good.
  • Graceful Loser: She makes no attempt to fight when she is exposed as Hiyoko's killer, and even tells Kazuichi to stop defending her, and accepts her death.
  • The Heart: She's a kind, friendly girl who's absolutely nice to everyone, and does her best to keep the group's spirits up during the Killing Game. Even after she becomes the Chapter 2 culprit, none of the others have anything bad to say about her.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: She dies by falling onto a bunch of Monokumas holding up pitchforks during her execution.
  • Modest Royalty: While her Research Lab features a luxury bedroom, which is actually a replica of her own room back in Novoselic, Sonia insists on keeping using her original dorm room as a way of being an equal to her classmates.

    Kazuichi Soda
Kazuichi Soda

Ultimate Mechanic

The Ultimate Mechanic and a participant of the Killing School Life. Kazuichi is labeled as the blackened of Chapter 4 because the radio that shocked Teruteru to death was made by him, and Monokuma executes him by launching him from a test car into a concrete wall.
  • Accidental Murder: Monokuma considers Teruteru electrocuting himself to death with Kazuichi's radio to be this because Kazuichi was the one who made the radio and no one had told Teruteru that touching the radio's exposed wiring could be lethal.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Like in the original game, Kazuichi and Gundham are rivals for Sonia's affection, and it only gets worse following Sonia's execution. Unlike in the original game however, they are both able to settle their differences some time after Sonia's execution and become good friends after being set up for a fight, having the same results as Taka and Mondo. Unfortunately, it ends up going the same way as Taka and Mondo's friendship with Kazuichi ending up getting executed as the technical blackened of the fourth trial.
  • Bait-and-Switch: In his execution, judging from the previous two test cars you'd assume that Monokuma is going to make the one in which he is crash into a wall as well. Instead, Monokuma makes the car stop abruptly, launching Kazuichi from the car and making him crash into a concrete wall, dying upon impact.
  • Death by Adaptation: He was one of the survivors in the original Danganronpa 2. Here he is the techincal blackened of Chapter 4. The Hope's Peak Academy Killing Game taking place in the real world rather than in a simulation like the Jabberwock Island Killing Game also means that he's gone for good.
  • Desecrating the Dead: In an attempt to disguise Hiyoko's cause of death and save Sonia from execution, Kazuichi inflicts numerous stab wounds to Hiyoko's dead body.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Him and Gundham end up putting their differences aside after being set up for a fight and end up becoming this. It doesn't last long though, as Kazuichi is executed as the technical blackened behind Teruteru's death.
  • Off on a Technicality: Inverted. Kazuichi is the blackened of Teruteru's death because the latter died of eletrocution while holding the radio he made. Kazuichi did warn the others of the risk of electrocution, as the radio lacked insulation, but since Teruteru wasn't present at the time, he never learned of the risk and Monokuma considered that death as a murder rather than an accidental death or suicide.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
    • His words of encouragement to Sonia regarding her position as heir to the throne of the Novoselic kingdom ultimately cause Sonia to forget about her attempts of bonding and begin working on her murder plot to protect her family's secret.
    • The radio he created to contact the outside world for help ends up killing Teruteru and himself, when the former end up electrocuting himself as he never learned about the lack of the insulation problem and Monokuma was eager to pinpoint that as a Accidental Murder.

    Akane Owari
Akane Owari

Ultimate Gymnast

The Ultimate Gymnast and a participant of the Killing School Life. Akane is the first victim of Chapter 3, being stabbed in the back by Peko after she is unable to go through with their plan of killing Nekomaru.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Downplayed. She tries to kill Nekomaru for Monokuma's eleven-million dollar motive, but she only does so in hopes of using the the money to help her family get out of poverty.
  • Affectionate Nickname: She calls Ryota "shrimp" because of his physique.
  • Death by Adaptation: She was one of the survivors in the original Danganronpa 2. Here she is the first victim of Chapter 3. The Hope's Peak Academy Killing Game taking place in the real world rather than in a simulation like the Jabberwock Island Killing Game also means that she's gone for good.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Peko stabs her In the Back with her bamboo-concealed kendo sword. Once she dies and her body goes limp, it is left dangling from the sword until Peko removes it and pins Akane to the wall with a pickaxe.
  • Irony: Even though she ends up not being able to go through with killing Nekomaru right before she's killed, the fact that Nekomaru was killed due to his struggles to free himself from the bed she chained him to causes Monokuma to label Akane as the blackened behind Nekomaru's death.
  • Kick the Morality Pet: Her attempted murder of Nekomaru qualifies as this, considering he was her closest friend among the cast, even if she isn't able to go through with it.
  • Naked People Are Funny: In Chapter 1, she gives the shirt she is wearing to Mahiru so that she can wash it and reveals that she is not wearing anything underneath it. Ryota's face turns red when he sees her pass by completely topless.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After Akane can't go through with killing Nekomaru, Peko, her accomplice, kills her to both ensure that Akane doesn't tell the others her involvement in Nekomaru's attempted murder and to keep the Killing Game going and opening another floor in hope of finding and disabling Monokuma's broadcaster.
  • You Remind Me of X: She tells Ryota that he reminds her of one of her little siblings.

    Teruteru Hanamura
Teruteru Hanamura

Ultimate Cook

The Ultimate Cook and a participant of the Killing School Life. Teruteru is the victim of Chapter 4, accidentally shocking himself with Kazuichi's radio after touching the exposed wiring without knowing it could be lethal.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Downplayed. Teruteru never commits murder unlike his canon counterpart, though he does attempt to kill Ryota early on, only failing because Akane was there to prevent it.
  • The Cameo: A statue of him appears in the Funhouse in Class Swap 2.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Instead of being cooked alive in an execution, Teruteru is shocked to death.
  • Driven to Suicide: The Killing Game greatly affected his mental health, so he was planning on committing suicide after he had helped Izuru and Nagito with their respective plans of obtaining a master key and calling for help after causing a blackout in the school. However, he ends up accidentally killing himself by touching the exposed wiring on Kazuichi's makeshift radio.
  • High-Voltage Death: Teruteru accidentally shocks himself to death when he attempts to use Kazuichi's makeshift radio to call for help by touching the exposed wiring. Because Kazuichi made the radio and no one had told Teruteru that touching the wiring could be lethal, Monokuma declares Kazuichi as the blackened.
  • Sadistic Choice: Monokuma told him that he either became his traitor or he would have his mother killed.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Zigzagged. Teruteru is the victim of Chapter 4 rather than the culprit of Chapter 1. The Hope's Peak Academy Killing Game taking place in the real world rather than in a simulation like the Jabberwock Island Killing Game also means that he's gone for good.
  • Trauma Conga Line: He gets trapped in a Killing Game, is locked under surveillance in his room after attempting to kill Ryota, Monokuma forces him to be his traitor or else he claims that he'll have his mother killed, Hiyoko locks him into the kitchen's freezer as a prank and is unable to let him out because she had died of poison while he was there, causing him to fall ill, Monokuma exposes him as a traitor when he recovers and insults him for not giving him any information due to his misfortunes, causing half of the remaining students to distrust him. Teruteru then decides to commit suicide after fulfilling one last request for Izuru and Nagito, and in not only do Ibuki and Gundham attack him in a fit of panic, but he accidentally shocks himself to death when trying to use Kazuichi's makeshift radio.

    Peko Pekoyama
Peko Pekoyama

Ultimate Swordswoman

The Ultimate Swordswoman and a participant of the Killing School Life. Peko is the culprit of Chapter 3, having stabbed Akane in the back after she backed down from their plan to kill Nekomaru, and also playing a huge part in Nekomaru's death. Monokuma executes her by sending a mob of robots to attack her with swords.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: While her execution is relatively the same as the one in Danganronpa 2, Peko is cut in half by one of the robots instead of being repeatedly stabbed to death by a mob of them.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: She agreed to help Akane in her plan to murder Nekomaru simply because she wanted the fourth floor to open up in hopes furthering her goal of finding and killing the Mastermind in revenge for Fuyuhiko's death. Once Akane is unable to go through with her murder plan, Peko promptly disposes of her.
  • Half the Woman She Used to Be: Peko ultimately loses her life in her execution when one of the robots cuts her in half.
  • In Spite of a Nail: In this fic, Peko still dies by the "One Woman Army" execution, although one chapter later and with a different end result (she gets cut in half instead of being repeatedly stabbed).
  • In the Back: Peko both figuratively and literally backstabs Akane once Akane is unable to go through with her plan of killing Nekomaru after he gives her a "What the Hell, Hero?" speech.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: Because the person she cares the most about, Fuyuhiko, was already in the school with her, Monokuma's Motive Video for Peko states that should she get away with murder succesfully, she'd be able to graduate alongside Fuyuhiko on the condition that she doesn't tell anyone about it, not even Fuyuhiko. When Fuyuhiko demanded Peko to tell him what was on her video, Peko refused, angering Fuyuhiko enough to begin setting up the Death Trap that would eventually lead to his own death.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Peko tells Mahiru that because Fuyuhiko's killer, Chiaki, is already dead, she intends to get revenge by killing the Mastermind of the killing game that took Fuyuhiko's life. Ironically enough, it ends up being none other than Chiaki, whom Peko tried to kill at the end of Chapter 1 - or rather, she tried to kill who she thought was Chiaki; The Ultimate Imposter.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Before her execution, Mahiru tells her that if she was feeling responsible for Fuyuhiko's death she should've told everyone else so they could help her get through it because they are friends. Peko coldly interrupts her speech and tells her than she never once saw them as friends and that she didn't care about what happened to anyone that was not Fuyuhiko.
  • Sore Loser: Unlike Chiaki and Sonia, she makes no attempt to Face Death with Dignity, voting for Mahiru as the blackened out of pure spite and cruelly telling the group she had never cared about them or saw them as her friends before being executed.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Zigzagged. Peko is executed as the culprit of Chapter 3, one chapter later than in canon. The Hope's Peak Academy Killing Game taking place in the real world rather than in a simulation like the Jabberwock Island Killing Game also means that she's gone for good.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: After Chiaki's execution Peko states that she deserved to die for killing Fuyuhiko.

    Gundham Tanaka
Gundham Tanaka

Ultimate Breeder

The Ultimate Breeder and a participant of the Killing School Life. Gundham survives the final trial and escapes Hope's Peak Academy alongside Mahiru, Ibuki, Hajime/Izuru, Nagito, Mikan and Ryota.
  • Adaptational Heroism: A downplayed example: while Gundham was the Chapter 4 culprit in canon, it's implied his murder had noble reasons behind it. Here, he never commits murder for any reason.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Like in the original game, Kazuichi and Gundham are rivals for Sonia's affection, which only gets worse when Sonia gets executed after the second trial. Unlike in the original game however, they are both able to settle their differences and become good friends after being set up for a fight, having the same results as Taka and Mondo. Unfortunately, it ends up going the same way as Taka and Mondo's friendship with Kazuichi ending up getting executed as the technical blackened of the fourth trial. Unlike Kiyotaka in the original game however, Gundham goes on to survive the Killing Game.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Him and Kazuichi end up putting their differences aside after being set up for a fight and end up becoming this. It only lasts two chapters, sadly enough...
  • Let Me at Him!: After Kazuichi's execution, Gundham tries to attack Monokuma completely blinded by rage, which forces Ibuki and Ryota to physically restrain him before he can get himself killed for it.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: He was executed as the culprit of the fourth murder case in the the original Danganronpa 2. Here he survives the Killing Game.

    Nagito Komaeda
Nagito Komaeda

Ultimate Lucky Student

The Ultimate Lucky Student and a participant of the Killing School Life. Nagito and Izuru fake the former's death in Chapter 5 as part of their plan to expose the Mastermind. Nagito goes on to survive the final trial and escapes Hope's Peak Academy alongside Mahiru, Ibuki, Hajime/Izuru, Gundham, Mikan and Ryota.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Subverted. He's still the same Hope-obssesed maniac he was in the original Danganronpa 2, he's just better at hiding his true nature this time around, as it takes him four chapters to be forced to reveal it as opposed to only one.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Nagito chops off his left hand with a cleaver as part of his and Izuru's Faking The Death scheme in order to expose the Mastermind.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Rather than being poisoned, Nagito is seemingly fed to the carnivorous plant on the fifth floor. Subverted as Nagito was Faking the Dead as part of his and Izuru's plan to take out the Mastermind.
  • Faking the Dead: He and Izuru fake his death by hiding his severed hand and sliced-up pillowcase stuffings in a plastic bag and placing them in the freezer vent to make it appear that the bag was full of body parts before taking all the meat in the locker and feeding it to the carnivorous plant on the fifth floor to make it look like the rest of the "body" was fed to the plant. This was made in order to trigger a fifth Class Trial and expose the Mastermind.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: He was the "victim" of the fifth murder case in the the original Danganronpa 2. Here he survives the Killing Game.

    Mikan Tsumiki
Mikan Tsumiki

Ultimate Nurse

The Ultimate Nurse and a participant of the Killing School Life. Mikan survives the final trial and escapes Hope's Peak Academy alongside Mahiru, Ibuki, Hajime/Izuru, Nagito, Gundham and Ryota.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Unlike her canon counterpart, Mikan never commits murder here and remains a helpful and friendly girl throughout.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: The second half of Chapter 5's Deadly Life is told from her perspective as she, Hajime and Ryota explore the lower floors due to Mahiru, Gundham and Ibuki being trapped on the upper floors.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Her recovering from the attack to her Research Lab and making it into the second trial on time to state that Hiyoko's stab wound was inflicted postmortem saves the entire class from voting for Kazuichi as the culprit and getting executed for voting for the wrong person.
  • Closest Thing We Got: Because she is the only one in Class 78 with medical training despite techincally only being a trainee who doesn't specialize in performing autopsies, the group uses her as the impromptu coroner. By the time Chapter 4 rolls, the stress of having to examine the dead bodies of her classmates gets to Mikan and causes her to have a severe mental breakdown once she sees Teruteru's body.
  • Freak Out: Experiences a major one at the sight of Teruteru's body, outright stating during it that the group will all die. Justified, as she has had to examine four gruesome murders prior to this.
  • Odd Friendship: The shy and timid Mikan ends up becoming good friends with the bold and assertive Mahiru and goes on to become one of her closest allies during the Killing Game.
  • Poor Communication Kills: In Chapter 3, Kazuichi told the other students that touching the exposed wiring of his radio could result in whoever touched it being fatally shocked. Teruteru was sick at the time and was unable to hear the explanation, and Mikan, who was taking care of him, forgot to tell him about it, which leads to Teruteru accidentally shocking himself to death in Chapter 4 after he touches the radio's wiring, and Monokuma declaring Kazuichi the culprit because he was the one who made the radio.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She was executed as the culprit of the third murder case in the original Danganronpa 2. Here she survives the Killing Game.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Her dark secret is that, as a result of being subjected to severe physical abuse for so long, Mikan is conditioned to enjoy being in pain.

    Ryota Mitarai
Ryota Mitarai

Ultimate Animator

The Ultimate Animator and a participant of the Killing School Life. Ryota survives the final trial and escapes Hope's Peak Academy alongside Mahiru, Ibuki, Hajime/Izuru, Nagito, Gundham and Mikan.
  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Due to working on it for so long, Ryota has become immune to his own anime's brainwashing abilities. In order to make him forget about the Tragedy the Mastermind injected him with torture drugs to erase his memory, although he still gets nightmares about the Tragedy.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Originally debuted in the Danganronpa 3 anime and didn't participate in the Danganronpa 2 Killing Game. Here he is part of the main cast and even survives the final trial.
  • Gone Horribly Right: He had intended for his anime to inspire hope into other people, but it ends up having the same Brainwashing effects as the Despair Video Junko had him make in canon. Mahiru starting to act like Nagito when he shows it to her speaks for itself. Once he realizes this, Ryota procceeds to destroy his life's work. The Mastermind also reveals that she used Ryota's anime to give everyone in the Class amnesia and make them forget about the Tragedy.
  • Odd Friendship: Becomes close friends with the Hot-Blooded and outgoing Akane after she saves him from Teruteru. It's later implied that the two were actually friends during their school days as well.
  • The Paranoiac: As a result of Teruteru attempting to murder him and Chiaki trying to frame him for Fuyuhiko's murder, Ryota spends much of the first two chapters refusing to interact with the others out of fear they will harm him. He eventually grows out of this though.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Ryota goes from being a paranoid shut in who refuses to cooperate with the group to a valuable and trusted friend who becomes True Companions with the rest of the survivors of Class 78.

    The Mastermind
The real Chiaki Nanami

Ultimate Despair (Ultimate Gamer)

The Ultimate Despair and the Mastermind behind the Hope's Peak Academy's Killing Game. Having faked her death via killing the Ultimate Imposter, Chiaki Nanami hosts the Deadly Game in an attempt to share the Despair she feels with the whole world. She executes herself at the end of the final trial after all the surviving students vote for Hope and to escape Hope's Peak Academy.
  • Big Bad: The Mastermind of the Killing Game of Hope's Peak Academy and the Ultimate Despair in this continuity.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Rather than being impaled by spears like her original self or crushed by a Tetris block like her A.I. self, Chiaki puts herself throughout Imposter, Sonia, Peko, Kazuichi, Hajime and Jin Kirigiri's executions and ultimately dies by being Eaten Alive by the Monokuma Dragon that incinerated the Ultimate Imposter.
  • Emotionless Girl: Chiaki claims that she can't feel anything but Despair, and that it ultimately causes her to see Despair as a huge game.
  • The Fake Cutie: Ibuki and Gundham describe her as such. Not hard to see why given that she makes herself look like an innocent girl even when letting out words of sheer malice.
Chiaki: Hey-hey, I can be threatening. I just don't really feel like it.
  • Gamer Chick: Her Ultimate title. Her being unable to feel anything but Despair causes her to see spreading it as a huge videogame.
  • Kick the Dog: She absolutely loves to do this to her fellow classmates throughout the story, the standout example being when she has Kazuichi executed for the death of Teruteru, despite the fact that he was in no way culpable for his demise, simply because she knows it will bring despair to the remaining survivors, to say nothing of her actions toward the Ultimate Imposter.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Because Chiaki didn't have access to Yasuke Matsuda's brainwashing memory-erasing program in this continuity, she instead used Ryota's anime to brainwash her classmates into forgetting their time at Hope's Peak. However, Ryota was immune to the effects of his own anime, so Chiaki and the Ultimate Imposter instead injected him with torture drugs to erase his memory, though he still got flashes of the Tragedy in his nightmares.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Her execution ends with the Monokuma Dragon crunching her before swallowing her corpse rather than burning her to death like what happened to the Ultimate Imposter. Knowing that she was supposed to fake the latter's death by having the dragon seem to eat them before betraying them by incinerating them, this Bait-and-Switch is rather appropriate.
  • Mask of Sanity: It's heavily implied by the Ultimate Imposter's portrayal of her that Chiaki behaved just like her canon self during her two years at Hope's Peak Academy and was so good at pretending to be a friendly Nice Girl that even Nagito and Izuru were unable to see through her act.
  • Not So Stoic: She completely loses it when Mahiru is able to restore hope to the rest of the survivors and eventually gets into an Argument Armament with her. She's also clearly angered that Nagito was able to outsmart her in Chapter 5 and treats him with open disdain.
  • The Rival: Judging by Monokuma's reaction to Nagito's "death" in Chapter 5 and how aggressive she is towards him in the final trial, she seems to absolutely loathe Nagito, which is not hard to see why from her perspective given who Nagito is. This gets extended to Mahiru by the end as well due to Mahiru's continued determination in the face of Chiaki's Despair.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: She is described as sounding like a friendly and innocent girl even while behaving in an utterly depraved and malicious manner. This trait completely disappears when Mahiru manages to instill hope in the other survivors, and she suffers a Villainous Breakdown.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Played With. Because she's the Mastermind and the Ultimate Despair in this continuity, Chiaki has outlived both her original self (who was killed by Junko at the start of the Tragedy) and her A.I. self (who was executed by Monokuma as the culprit of Chapter 5).

Class Swap 2 - Jabberwock Island

Monokuma and Usami

    Monokuma
Monokuma

The Headmaster of Hope's Peak Academy

  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed. Monokuma is now evenly matched with Usami. She can't overpower him and prevent him from hosting a killing game, but he can't overpower her and make her lose her powers either.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Monokuma forgot to add the "No Violence against the Headmaster" rule, which allows Mukuro to get away with grabbing him by the neck and them stomping on him.
  • Last Disrespects: Notably, he doesn't acknowledge Celeste's name in her Monokuma File, only referring to her as Taeko Yasuhiro.
  • No Sympathy: Monokuma says that Hina being depressed over what Sakura, Sayaka and Kyoko did to her and dying of starvation in the Funhouse, thus not triggering a Class Trial, is stupid and a complete waste.
  • Obvious Rule Patch: In Chapter 4, Monokuma disables Aoi's perk to prevent the group from eating until somebody dies in the Funhouse.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: While being interrogated by Mukuro, Monokuma admits he wouldn't have targeted her or Junko with the Despair Disease or any other motive that wouldn't allow them to survive together. Since they would want to graduate together, it would be a waste to want one of them to kill if there is no guarantee the other sister will survive the following trial.
  • Samus Is a Girl: He is once again being controlled by Chiaki Nanami, although this time Chiaki is an AI program that has taken Monokuma's form.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When Mukuro concludes that the Despair Disease is a nano-machine virus, Monokuma clearly goes with her interpretation while explaining how the disease will shut down after a murder occurs.

    Usami
Usami

The Class Teacher

  • Adaptational Badass: Downplayed. Usami is now evenly matched with Monokuma, meaning that he can't overpower her and remodel her into Monomi, but she can't overpower him to prevent him from hosting a Killing Game either.
  • Character Catchphrase: She has a few:
    • "Love! Love!"
    • Whenever questioned about her intentions, Usami will reply by saying "Hope Fragments?".
    • At the end of the "Usami Theatre" segments, Usami always tells the audience to "brush your teeth and eat your greens!"
  • Mercy Kill: She does this to the Chapter 3 culprit because she can't bear seeing her suffer at the hands of Monokuma.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Stops Byakuya from killing himself after the fourth class trial to save his life despite the fact that Byakuya was the blackened and was going to do die either way, forcing him to die in the execution rather than in his own terms. Monokuma even thanks her for that.
  • Rules Lawyer: Despite prioritizing the rules of the Class Trip above all else, Usami is not above exploiting them to screw Monokuma over, notably forcing him to shoot himself after he entered the Final Room with her and protecting Makoto in the following trial for giving a non-verbal hint about the true nature of the Funhouse.
  • Skewed Priorities: In Chapter 3, she refused to give the students Monokuma's pamphlet for treating the Despair Disease because he calls the readers "Total Losers" in the title.

The Students

    In General

  • Adaptational Villainy: They are the Remnants of Despair in this continuity.
  • Age Lift: Because the Trigger Happy Havoc students are part of Class 77-B in this continuity, they are one year older than in canon.
  • Everyone Has a Special Move: Each of the students has a special perk related to their talent which they access to with their student handbooks. A student must be aware of their talent in order to use their perk, which means that Mukuro is unable to use hers until her talent is revealed at the end of Chapter 4. By the end of Chapter 4, every perk has been revealed except Chihiro's:
    • Makoto - Talentless: Allows Makoto to see what the other students' perks are and whether they are active or not.
    • Junko - Changing Room: Allows Junko to lock any door on the island, even if the door doesn't have a lock to begin with. However, she can only lock one door at a time and needs to have direct contact with it.
    • Aoi - Pit Stop: Allows Aoi to call a food delivery service from Monokuma or Usami whenever she wants.
    • Yasuhiro - The World: Allows Yasuhiro to watch live feed from any camera on the island one hour per day.
    • Leon - Practice Skip: Allows Leon to skip a Class Trial. However, it will not save Leon from execution should the other students guess the blackened incorrectly.
    • Sakura - The Strongest: Allows Sakura to open any door that has been locked by a student.
    • Sayaka - Cheering Crowd: Allows Sayaka to access the broadcast system from her handbook and make announcements or broadcasts of her own.
    • Kiyotaka - Rules and Discipline: Allows Taka to input additional rules.
    • Hifumi - Canon Non-Compliant: Allows Hifumi to secretly keep another student's perk disabled.
    • Celeste - Gambler's Luck: Allows Celeste to obtain her own desired result when using luck-based machines.
    • Mondo - Road Rage: Allows Mondo to control the Monobeasts and have them block the passage of a specific student.
    • Genocider Syo - Bloodlust: Allows Genocider Syo to be discovered as the blackened and avoid execution once per the entirety of the Killing Game.
    • Kyoko - Autopsy Report: Allows Kyoko to alter any Monokuma file freely, even the ones which have yet to be released.
    • Toko - Bittersweet Ending: Allows Toko to take the place of the current blackened in their execution. However, the perk must be used before voting ends.
    • Byakuya - Family Fortune: Infinite Monocoins.
    • Mukuro - Massacre: Mukuro can kill more than two people. If she is one of the last two survivors, both are considered winners and released from the Killing Game.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: All of the students as a whole... sort of. In addition to the death order being different than in the original Trigger Happy Havoc, the Killing School Trip taking place in a virtual simulation as opposed to the real world like the Killing School Life means that any of the students that die in this story have their bodies rendered comatose in the real world, with a slim chance of revival. This doesn't apply to whoever the A.I. traitor is and possibly Genocider Syo, given that neither of them have a body to return to in the first place (the former being an A.I. and the latter being a Split Personality that's being given form.

    Mukuro Ikusaba
Mukuro Ikusaba

Ultimate ??? (Ultimate Soldier)

  • Adaptation Personality Change: Due to having a much healthier relationship with her sister, Mukuro is a far more confidant young woman who has little problem standing up for herself or saying exactly what's on her mind, a far cry from the Sycophantic Servant she was in canon.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Instead of Mukuro being an Extreme Doormat to Junko and letting herself be insulted by her, the twins are portrayed as bickering siblings that care about each other, with Mukuro insulting Junko just as much as she does.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Mukuro cannot remember her talent or what she had been doing after she left her family. She can only remember her childhood and being invited to Hope's Peak Academy.
  • Amnesiac Resonance: Despite having forgotten her talent, Mukuro still has habits and knowledge befitting of the Ultimate Soldier ranging from waking up at dawn to do a morning jog to being proficient with blades. During Chapter 3, while trying to think of a distracting topic, she reflexively thinks about how to disassemble an AK-47 before remembering that she doesn't know how to do that.
  • Ascended Extra: Being killed in the first chapter in the original game and her death only been given focus in Chapter 5, Mukuro is the protagonist in this story.
  • Big Brother Instinct: When Junko gets infected with the Despair Disease, Mukuro becomes increasingly worried and desperate as Junko's health degrades, to the point that she almost goes through with a plan of forcing Kyoko to kill herself by threatening Aoi if it means saving Junko. It's only when she starts thinking about what the other students, especially Junko, would do and say if she successfully caused Kyoko's death that she abandons said plan.
  • Everyone Can See It: Junko, Monokuma and even Toko comment on how Mukuro seemingly has a crush on Makoto, even if Mukuro herself doesn't see it.
  • First-Person Smartass: A lot of Mukuro's inner thoughts are very snarky.
  • Foregone Conclusion: She does not remember what her Ultimate Talent was, but anyone who has already played the first game knows that she's the Ultimate Soldier.
  • Idiot Hair: As seen by the Banana House's room arrangement, she has an ahoge. Fitting given that she's the protagonist.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: In-Universe, the fact that Mukuro doesn't know Sayaka Maizono is met with incredulity and shock much to her annoyance.
  • Ship Tease: She gets some of these moments with both Makoto and Mondo. Monokuma even tells her at the start of Chapter 3 that she should feel happy about Sayaka's death because it means one less romantic rival for Makoto's feelings.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In the original Trigger Happy Havoc she was killed in Chapter 1 after attacking Monokuma, being betrayed by her sister. Here she is the protagonist and is still in one piece as of the end of Chapter 4.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Junko. They are both constantly insulting one another, but it's clear that they do care about each other.

    Makoto Naegi
Makoto Naegi

Ultimate Lucky Student

  • Better Manhandle the Murder Weapon: When discovering Yasuhiro's corpse, Makoto has the brilliant idea of removing the sword from his abdomen in an attempt to save him. Not only does this get him labeled as the prime suspect (and also punched by Mondo), but Mukuro tells him that had Yasuhiro been alive, chances are that removing the sword would have killed him faster.
  • Cant Hold Their Liquor: He, Kiyotaka and Toko all get drunk during the post-funeral party in Chapter 3, in Makoto's case it causes him to have a dream about him wetting the bed.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Makoto is still the prime suspect of the first murder case.
  • Nice Guy: By far one of the nicest people on Jabberwock Island, it's even stated by Mukuro that he is probably the only purely good person among the students.
  • Ship Tease: Has plenty of this with Mukuro. Junko also tells Mukuro that Sayaka and Kyoko both seem to be interested in him.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Makoto gets sick during the roller coaster ride in Chapter 4 and ends up throwing up on Leon.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When Leon complains about his talent and Mukuro muses she must be a lousy Ultimate if she can't remember her talent, Makoto tries to cheer them up by saying they are still exceptional in the fields that made them Ultimates.

    Kyoko Kirigiri
Kyoko Kirigiri

Ultimate Detective

The Ultimate Detective, Jin Kirigiri's daughter and a participant in the Killing School Trip. Kyoko is the culprit of Chapter 3, stabbing Mondo in the neck after getting infected with the Despair Disease and is executed by Monokuma via an electric chair, but Usami presses an emergency button to snap her neck and put her out of her misery.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Kyoko becomes infected with the Remembering Disease and murders Mondo, then attempts to frame Hina, Byakuya and Syo for the crime.
  • Break Them by Talking: At the end of the third trial, Kyoko telling Hina that she's a stupid and emotional wreck and that she's surprised she hasn't gotten herself killed thus far sends Hina, who was already struggling with being betrayed by Sakura and Sayaka beforehand, into Heroic BSoD.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Don't do anything stupid".
  • The Coroner Doth Protest Too Much: What her perk allows her to do. She uses this in her murder, covering up the fact that Syo was the one killed and allowing her to place blame on Toko, who is under the effect of the Despair Disease.
  • Death by Adaptation: Kyoko was a survivor in the original Trigger Happy Havoc. Here she is executed as the third chapter's culprit. However, the Killing Game taking place inside the Neo World Program means that as a result of her avatar experiencing death in Jabberwock Island, she has been rendered comatose in the real world.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She definitely didn't expect for Toko and Genocider Syo to walk in on her as she was killing Mondo, which forced her to lure both of them to the Music Venue's basement, lock both of them, and try to frame Genocider Syo for the crime instead of Hina, her intended target.
  • Driven to Suicide: While taking care of the students infected with the Despair Disease, Kyoko had considered ending her own life in order to stop the motive. Then she gets infected with the disease herself and decides to kill Mondo instead.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 6 of the first Class Swap, Mahiru and Izuru find a picture of Kyoko as a child playing with her father Jin Kirigiri. Izuru also correctly guesses that Kyoko's full name is the password for Jin's laptop.
  • Electric Torture: Her execution consists of Monokuma shocking her with an electric chair. Before she can suffer a High-Voltage Death however, Usami presses an emergency button, stopping the charge and causing the chair's helmet on Kyoko's head to twist 90 degrees, snapping her neck and putting her out of her misery.
  • For the Evulz: Her Despair-self's reasoning for killing Mondo was simply to create a highly complicated murder case and see whether or not she would be able to get away with it.
  • Got Volunteered: The other students vote her as their Class President, and she proves herself to be a capable and responsible leader... until she gets infected with the Despair Disease, that is.
  • Kick the Dog: In her final moments, Kyoko insults Hina by calling her stupid and emotional and saying that she's surprised she's even managed to survive for so long.
  • Laughing Mad: After she is discovered as Mondo's killer, she spends most of her final moments laughing hysterically.
  • The Leader: She is appointed as the class president by the rest of the students, and she is more than capable with her role. Then she gets infected with the Despair Disease and all hell breaks loose.
  • Morton's Fork: Kyoko gets stuck in one with the Despair Disease: either the disease kills all the patients with no guarantee Monokuma won't just have it infect the other students if that happens, or she kills herself to save the other students and stop the motive before any more deaths can occur. Then she is infected by the Despair Disease herself and instead decides to pick an even worse third option.
  • Neck Snap: How she ultimately dies. Being unable to bear Monokuma inflicting Electric Torture on Kyoko during her execution, Usami presses an emergency button that causes the electric chair's helmet to twist ninety degrees and instantly snap Kyoko's neck.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: She admits to having killed Mondo, rather than the far more vulnerable Celeste or Junko, to remove him as a potential suspect and to stop him from stumbling on the crime scene early as he was the only victim of the Despair Disease who was still conscious and able to walk.
  • Shout-Out: Her perk's name is "Autopsy Report", which is a reference to the Ace Attorney franchise.
  • Sore Loser: Much like Peko, after being exposed as the culprit of Chapter 3, she spitefully votes for Mukuro as the blackened and insults both her and Aoi before her execution.
  • Wham Line: Having regained her memories of her time as part of the Ultimate Despair thanks to the Despair Disease, she, before her execution, asks one of her classmates "How are you alive?", even though she knows they won't answer her. This means that she knows who's the Future Foundation's mole.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Initially, Kyoko planned to pin the murder of Mondo on Aoi. But once Toko and Syo discover the crime scene, she easily leads them away and traps them inside the Music Venue, fully expecting that Syo will kill Toko and allow Kyoko to use her as a new scapegoat while she makes an alibi for herself by visiting the hotel. When returning to the Music Venue, she discovers that the murder happened but the other way around, leading her to quickly infect Toko with the Despair Disease, correctly guessing that she would act like Syo when sick, and then using her perk to cover which girl actually died.

    Yasuhiro Hagakure
Yasuhiro "Hiro" Hagakure

Ultimate Clarivoyant

The Ultimate Clarivoyant and a participant in the Killing School Trip. Yasuhiro is the victim of Chapter 1, having gone paranoid over a prophecy of Sakura becoming a killer and trying to fight her with a sword, only for Sakura to kill him with said sword after hearing his words.
  • The Cassandra: Even if his predictions have a startlingly good accuracy, Yasuhiro's stupidity, growing paranoia and him sending vague accusations deter the few people that do listen to him. Ironically, it's hearing his words that causes Sakura to gain the will to kill him.
  • Death by Adaptation: Yasuhiro was a survivor in the original Trigger Happy Havoc. Here he dies as the first chapter's victim. However, the Killing Game taking place inside the Neo World Program means that as a result of his avatar experiencing death in Jabberwock Island, he has been rendered comatose in the real world.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Kyoko states that while his 30% accuracy may sound unreliable, it's actually startlingly good for questions like "what will happen to me tomorrow?". Surely enough some of his predictions (Sakura giving in to Monokuma's motive, fifteen students being alive after the first trial) turn out to be true, and two had been proven false (Sayaka being the one who will kill Leon, Byakuya having the most dangerous perk of the game).
  • Mythology Gag: He had predicted that Sayaka would kill Leon and thus tried to warn Leon about it. This never becomes true, as while Sayaka does become a killer in Chapter 2, she killed Hifumi and not Leon (albeit accidentally). In Chapter 1 of the original Trigger Happy havoc Sayaka tried to murder Leon, only to be killed by him instead.
  • Never Bring a Knife to a Fist Fight: Tries to defend himself with a katana once Sakura enters his cottage. Sakura being the Ultimate Martial Artist, easily disarms and kills him with it.
  • The Paranoiac: Became this at the end of the Chapter 1's Daily Life as a result of him predicting multiple murders and their motives, leading him to be mistrustful of the other students. This eventually causes his death as Sakura wants to know why he's accusing her and chooses to confront him, which Hiro mistakes this for an attack, leading the situation to degenerate into Sakura murdering him.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: He confronts Mukuro, Sayaka and Kyoko about how he knows what she's planning without specifying which one and it's implied that it's due to him predicting that Sayaka would kill Leon. Nonetheless, he is accidentally right as Sayaka and Kyoko would eventually turn out to be the blackened of the next two Class Trials after his death.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: One of Yasuhiro's prophecies is "the Ogre will fail the test of will in one of the motives." This causes Yasuhiro to become paranoid, causing him to accuse Sakura of giving into Monokuma's motive and attacking her with a sword only to be easily disarmed by her. Unfortunately, his words end up causing Sakura to realize it was her chance to find out about her lost memories, resulting in her killing Yasuhiro with his own sword in the heat of the moment.
  • Tempting Fate: His final words to the group as a whole is to say that he won't cry at their funerals. He ends up being the first casualty of the Killing School Trip.

    Byakuya Togami
Byakuya Togami

Ultimate Affluent Progeny

The Ultimate Affluent Progeny and a participant in the Killing School Trip. Byakuya is the culprit of Chapter 4, having shot Celeste after he won their game of Russian Roulette after both of them found the secret of the Funhouse. He is executed by Monokuma putting him on a sinking ship before shooting him with a cannon.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Downplayed. Byakuya is revealed to be Celeste's killer, but the two were engaged in a mutual duel to the death, and he seems relieved when he is discovered to be the blackened.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: He attempts to take poison after being exposed as the fourth culprit, but Usami stops him.
  • Blessed with Suck: He views his perk, an infinite amount of Monocoins, as the most useless one in the entire game and his first clue the game was rigged. He doesn't even bother bringing it up until shortly before he's executed, and only then because Leon asked about it.
  • Brutal Honesty: After brutally tearing down Toko at the end of the fourth trial, he defends his words by saying she needed to hear them.
  • Death by Adaptation: Byakuya was a survivor in the original Trigger Happy Havoc. Here he dies as the fourth chapter's culprit. However, the Killing Game taking place inside the Neo World Program means that as a result of his avatar experiencing death in Jabberwock Island, he has been rendered comatose in the real world.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He might be a self-centered sociopath, but even he finds the motive of the Despair Disease to be nothing but senseless bloodshed. He describes the previous two motives as challenges to overcome whereas he thinks that the Despair Disease is nothing more than a "kill or die" situation.
  • Exact Words: How he justifies his actions in Chapter 4 in the context of trying to keep his promise not to allow any more murders. He faces Celeste in a mutually agreed game of Russian Roulette. Either Celeste kills him, which means he kept his promise to the grave and everything afterwards is out of his hands; he kills Celeste and gets away with it, meaning there are no more murders, only executions; or he kills Celeste and gets caught, which basically means both.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Even after his suicide attempt is thwarted, he goes into his execution with his head held high.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Monokuma reveals the motive of the Despair Disease, Byakuya decides to cooperate with the rest of the group in order to prevent a murder because, in his eyes, this specific motive makes the Killing Game unfair. He also tells the other students that he needs some time to think his next course of actions.
Byakuya: Perhaps you're missing the point. Both previous motives were challenges presented to us. One could either overcome them and be above them or submit and fall into a trap of committing an irrational murder. This, however, is not some dilemma. It's simple, barbaric 'kill or die'.
    Kyoko: You almost sound offended.
Byakuya: Why wouldn't I be? I expected this Killing Game to be entertaining and to eventually participate properly and win, but with this motive's revelations... Well, it's clear that the mastermind simply wants to see bodies pile up.
  • I Gave My Word: When he promises not to allow any more murders, he's willing to put his own life on the line to keep it.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Byakuya still agrees to cooperate with the group after the Killing Game becomes unfair, more specifically, because he sees the Despair Disease motive as a "kill or die" situation, he refuses to participate any longer and wants to make the Mastermind pay.
  • Jerkass: His Establishing Character Moment is insulting Mukuro for having amnesia.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Even if he would never admit it, Byakuya grew attached to the other students as Celeste observes during their Russian Roulette game and it is hinted at multiple times during the following trial as Byakuya does his best to honor Celeste's last request, barely defending himself during the trial and being seemingly relieved when he's found to be the blackened.
  • The Leader: After Kyoko's death, he takes the role of the leader of the students since he no longer has any will to participate in the killing game.
  • Nerves of Steel: Just like his canon counterpart, there is not much than can phase him in the long term. Not even during his execution, where his only reaction to the cannonball speeding up to kill him is to glare at it.
  • Properly Paranoid: Upon learning that all students have to be together to visit the Funhouse, Byakuya prepares a duralumin case full of survival gear to take with them. Unfortunately, he didn't think to take a gasmask.
  • Sore Loser: Downplayed. Even though it's quite clear that Byakuya didn't expect to win the trial with him refuting Toko's defense in his favor and him preparing a way to die on his own terms, he refuses to admit to anything during the trial and even abstaining himself during the voting. As he himself says, his ego and determination wouldn't let him simply die without a fight.
  • Spanner in the Works: Him sending both Toko and Genocider Syo to investigate the third island during the Despair Disease quarantine causes them to walk in on Kyoko killing Mondo and throws a wrench in Kyoko's plans of framing Hina for the murder.
  • Tsundere: Following his Heel–Face Turn, he tells the rest of the students that he's going to collaborate with them only because the Killing Game has gotten unfair in his eyes, not because he thinks of them as friends, but the way he worded it makes it sound suspicious.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: His perk is infinite Monocoins. Byakuya thinks he got the weakest perk of the lot.
  • You Are in Command Now: At the beginning of Chapter 4, the remaining students pass the now-deceased Kyoko's role of leader onto Byakuya, who agrees to lead the rest of the class since he wants to take out the Mastermind. This doesn't last however, but Byakuya does try to hold onto his promise of not letting anyone else be murdered.

    Kiyotaka Ishimaru
Kiyotaka "Taka" Ishimaru

Ultimate Moral Compass

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Due to Leon preventing Taka and Mondo from having the endurance contest they had in canon, the two of them don't bond and remain antagonistic towards each other. Instead, Taka bonds with Hifumi after the latter sparks the former's curiosity for 2D media by refering it to as "a lesson in modern culture". That said, Magical Girls Unite! shows that Taka and Mondo were indeed inseparable during their time at Hope's Peak.
  • Butt-Monkey: Boy, does Taka get it in Chapter 2; Leon and Mondo constantly insult him, Celeste vandalizes his cottage after he insults her, his new friend Hifumi is murdered, and then he learns that his father was murdered by a Serial Killer.
  • Cant Hold Their Liquor: He, Makoto, and Toko all get drunk during the post-funeral party in Chapter 3, with Taka in particular attempting to Drown His Sorrows.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: He does this in Chapter 3 in the memorial service Junko had made for the deceased as a way of coping with Hifumi's death and learning that his father was killed.
  • Misplaced Retribution: He blames Celeste and Genocider Syo for Hifumi's death. While they are not exactly blameless in the whole incident (Celeste tried to kill Hifumi herself, whereas Hifumi decided to kill Syo after he learned that she had killed Kiyotaka's father), Celeste tells him that while her involvement in the case did make it harder to solve, Sayaka would have still gone to the library and caused Hifumi's death.
  • Skewed Priorities: While discussing the alcohol racks of the Music Venue, Taka is more worried about the underage drinking than someone using it for a murder plan.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: As of the end of Chapter 4, Kiyotaka is still alive, whereas he was the first victim of the third case in the original Trigger Happy Havoc.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Firmly believes this about Celeste in Chapter 4, as he is impressed by her efforts to present herself as Celestia Lunderberg after seeing her infected by the Despair Disease and how she refuses to absolve herself of her guilt concerning her role in the second murder, believing both of those traits to be admirable.
  • You Killed My Father: One of Monokuma's hidden motives in Chapter 2 was meant to instigate this reaction upon Kiyotaka, as it reveals that Takaaki Ishimaru, his father, was murdered by Genoicder Syo because he was about to expose her as Toko's Serial Killer Split Personality.

    Sayaka Maizono
Sayaka Maizono

Ultimate Pop Sensation

The Ultimate Pop Sensation and a participant in the Killing School Trip. Sayaka is the culprit of Chapter 2, having accidentally broken the library's chandelier and pushed Hifumi under it, crushing him, and is executed by Monokuma by having numerous other Monokumas trample her to death.
  • Accidental Murder: She shoved Hifumi into the way of a falling chandelier after panicking and accidentally breaking it.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Zigzagged. Unlike her canon counterpart, Sayaka wasn't trying to murder someone, and she killed Hifumi by accident. But as a result, she became the blackened and she does everything in her power to escape death, even resorting to take Aoi as a hostage at knifepoint after the class trial ends.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Rather than dying from a stab wound to the abdomen, Sayaka is trampled to death by a crowd of Monokumas.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: At the end of the second trial, she resorts to taking Hina hostage with a knife to prevent Monokuma from executing her.
  • Foil: To Sonia. Both end up being the second culprits of their respective Killing Games, but whereas Sonia deliberately set out to kill someone, only for her attempt to end up killing the wrong target, Sayaka had no intention of murdering anyone only to end up accidentally killing Hifumi trying to stop him from killing what would also have been the wrong target. Also, whereas Sonia gracefully accepted her guilt and execution once she was exposed with most of the protests of her innocence coming from Kazuichi, Sayaka fights up until the very end to save her life, even going so far as to take Hina hostage with a knife after the trial in order to prevent Monokuma from executing her.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Invoked. Mukuro points out that it's illogical for Sayaka to not use her perk to warn everyone of Hifumi's death when she tried to alert the maximum number of students possible if she was innocent. Sayaka claims she forgot in the panic.
  • Groin Attack: She kicks Hifumi in the crotch and unknowingly knocks him the under the falling chandelier, believing that he was trying to kill her after finding out his plan to take out Genocider Syo.
  • Manslaughter Provocation: Sayaka walked into Hifumi setting up a murder trap for Genocider Syo. After Sayaka expressed her intention to tell everyone about it, Hifumi attacked her, causing Sayaka to panic, accidentally breaking the library's chandelier and shoving Hifumi under it, crushing him to death. Sayaka later realizes that Hifumi wasn't trying to kill her, but simply keep her quiet.
  • She Knows Too Much: She thought that Hifumi was going to kill her for witnessing the preparations for Genocider Syo's murder, and she accidentally kills him in return. She later realizes to her horror that Hifumi most likely wasn't trying to kill her.
  • Spanner in the Works: Had she not accidentally caused Hifumi's death herself, Celeste's murder plan for killing Hifumi would have been succesful.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Zigzagged. Sayaka dies as the culprit of the second case rather than the victim of the first case. The Killing Game taking place inside the Neo World Program means that as a result of her avatar experiencing death in Jabberwock Island, she has been rendered comatose in the real world.
  • Stress Vomit: The shock of accidentally having caused Hifumi's death causes her to vomit.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After being found guilty of murder, Sayaka resorts to holding Hina at knifepoint, thinking that Monokuma can't kill her as long as she is holding her hostage. This causes Kyoko to physically subdue her and rescue Hina, allowing Monokuma to restrain Sayaka and proceed with the execution.
  • Villain Has a Point: Calling her a villain may be a stretch, but she isn't wrong when Celeste, Mondo and Byakuya begin to blame her for covering up her crime and not confessing when they would have probably done the same in her place:
Sayaka: Of course not! I wasn't about to just die! I know what happens to blackened! I didn't want to go through that! So I... I... I had to do what I did to try and live! To survive! I just didn't want to die!
Byakuya: And yet, here you are.
Sayaka: Shut up! And you all, stop staring at me like that! Would you do anything different, huh?! Would you just give up your life if you accidentally killed someone? Would you?! WOULD YOU?!

    Hifumi Yamada
Hifumi Yamada

Ultimate Fanfic Creator

The Ultimate Fanfic Creator and a participant in the Killing School Trip. Hifumi is the victim of Chapter 2, accidentally being killed by Sayaka after she pushes him into the way of a falling chandelier.
  • Adaptational Heroism: As opposed to his game counterpart, who killed Kiyotaka to have Alter-Ego all to himself and was willing to let everyone else except Celeste be executed so he could escape, Hifumi in this story orchestrates a murder plan to kill Genocider Syo not only because she's a Serial Killer, but because he had learned that she had killed Kiyotaka's father. He was also planning on burying her body so that it wouldn't be discovered and no Class Trial would be held for her death.
  • Death by Adaptation: Zigzagged. Hifumi dies as the victim of the second murder case rather than the second victim of the third case. However, the Killing Game taking place inside the Neo World Program means that as a result of his avatar experiencing death in Jabberwock Island, he has been rendered comatose in the real world.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Him trying to subdue Sayaka after he told her about his murder plan. Even though he wasn't trying to kill her, it's normal that Sayaka would begin panicking and attack him.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Hifumi is crushed by a chandelier rather than bludgeoned by a hammer.
  • Grew a Spine: Thanks to Kiyotaka's influence, Hifumi refuses to continue to serve Celestia like in canon.
  • Loophole Abuse: Would have tried to exploit this by burying Genocider Syo after killing her to make sure that no body could have been found and preventing a Class Trial from happening.
  • Power Nullifier: His perk allows him to neutralize another student's perk.

    Sakura Ogami
Sakura Ogami

Ultimate Martial Artist

The Ultimate Martial Artist and a participant in the Killing School Trip. Sakura is the culprit of Chapter 1, stabbing Yasuhiro in the chest with a sword in the heat of the moment in hopes of learning what happened to her loved one in the two years of memories that she's missing, and is executed by Monokuma by being crushed by a platform with lots of heavy objects.

    Toko Fukawa
Toko Fukawa

Ultimate Writing Prodigy

  • Adaptational Villainy: Downplayed. She murders Genocider Syo in order to put an end to her years-long murder spree.
  • Cant Hold Their Liquor: She, Kiyotaka and Makoto all get drunk during the post-funeral party in Chapter 3. Unlike Taka and Makoto however, Toko only had one shot before getting drunk.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Knowing fully well that only Kyoko will get punished for killing Mondo, Toko decides to kill her Split Personality given form for ruining her life for years.
    Syo: (choking) Whaat...are...you doing...hrghhrh...
Toko: I'm e-ending! The reign of terror! Of Genocider Syo!
  • Easily Forgiven: After the third trial, nobody cares about how Toko killed someone and got away with it. Justified by the fact that Genocider Syo was an unhinged serial killer who ruined her life and that Kyoko was the real instigator of the murder by trapping both of them together and clearly expected Syo to profit on the occasion to kill her without being at risk of execution.
  • Foreshadowing: She faints when she sees Yasuhiro's dead body in Chapter 1, but she doesn't turn into Genocider Syo after waking up. Fastforward to the end of the first trial, and it's revealed that the reason why Toko didn't turn into her Split Personality is because she now has a body of her own.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Her perk allows her to take the place of a blackened during execution. Byakuya steals her handbook in order to prevent her from taking a dive for him.
  • I Reject Your Reality: During the fourth trial, Toko refuses to accept that Byakuya is the blackened to the point where she keeps throwing around more and more improbable theories about Celeste's death, even though the other students, including Byakuya, are asking her to stop.
  • Karma Houdini: Because Kyoko had already killed Mondo and therefore only she is considered the blackened unless she herself gets killed, Toko decides to kill Genocider Syo because even if she is unable to leave the island, she won't be executed for doing so if found out.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: It's really hard to blame her for resorting to murder to deal with an unrepentant and floridly psychotic Serial Killer like Genocider Syo.
  • Twin Switch: After finding out that Toko killed Syo, whom she was planning to frame for Mondo's death, Kyoko infects Toko with the Despair Disease so she begins acting like Genocider Syo, the most despised version of herself.

    Celestia Ludenberg
Celestia "Celeste" Ludenberg (Taeko Yasuhiro)

Ultimate Gambler

The Ultimate Gambler and a participant of the Killing School Trip. Celeste is the victim of Chapter 4, having lost her mutually agreed game of Russian Roulette with Byakuya, leading him to shoot her in the head. She is later decapitated to honor her wish of having a dramatic death.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Downplayed. Much like Teruteru, Celeste doesn't commit murder here, though she does make a failed attempt at it in Chapter 2.
  • Brutal Honesty: When she gets infected with the Despair Disease in Chapter 3, Celeste begins acting completely honest to everyone, including herself, up to the point in which she drops her persona and begins acting as her original Taeko Yasuhiro "self". She's also a bit too honest, as she openly tells the students her opinions on them (such as calling Chihiro a "twink").
  • Closet Geek: She is perfectly aware of what anime Hifumi's Justice Hammer comes from. When questioned about how she knows about it, she says that she just happened to see a poster of it one time and that she doesn't have much interest in it.
  • Confess to a Lesser Crime: In the second trial, Celeste confesses to having disguised herself as Mukuro, vandalizing Taka's cottage, and setting up a trap in the library to make the chandelier fall on Hifumi in order to prove her innocence on Hifumi's death.
  • Costume Copycat: As part of her murder plan in Chapter 2, she disguises herself as Mukuro (the one who is closest to her in appearance) after stealing some of her clothes from her cottage in order to pin her would-be murder of Hifumi on her by having Taka see her disguised as Mukuro and have him note down the time she went to the second island.
  • Death by Irony: The Ultimate Gambler ultimately dies as a result of losing a game of chance.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: In Chapter 2 she vandalizes Taka's cottage just because Taka insulted her.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: During Chapter 4, Celeste can't understand why Taka wants to reconcile with her or why he and Mukuro can empathize and want to trust her despite the fact she almost killed someone and is clearly untrustworthy.
Mukuro: And yet you went through the pain of distancing yourself and reminding us of your would-be murder. Wouldn't a more beneficial thing for a deceptive and callous person be to make use of any bit of trust given and try to work on it, instead of giving them extra reasons to not trust at all?
Celeste: That's—That was not my intention. What do you two know about me?! My name is Celestia Ludenberg and... And I do not have to stand this! This... foolish... nonsense about trust and... being better! How do you not understand? This is not a good person you're speaking to.
Mukuro: Who of us is? Except maybe Makoto.
Kiyotaka: Precisely. We do understand what you mean! But mutual understanding requires you to see our viewpoint too! And to be honest as well!
  • Evil Is Petty: She vandalized Taka's cottage because Taka insulted her and because Hifumi refused to make her her tea after she had attacked Taka.
Sayaka: How vain can you be?
    Junko: Yeah, damn.
  • Face Death with Dignity: While very much scared, Celeste manages to retain most of her composure after losing her final game of Russian Roulette, and allows Byakuya to kill her.
  • Gamer Chick: After being infected by the Despair Disease and embracing her Taeko Yasuhiro "self", Celeste can be seen using a handheld gaming device.
  • Last Request: Asks her killer to make her death dramatic before being killed in Russian Roulette. Decapitation sure fits the bill.
  • Not So Stoic: She goes atomic when Kiyotaka insults her. Makoto asking her why she decided to plot a murder during the second trial causes her to yell and insult him. She also loses her composure when some of the other students don't believe her claims that she didn't kill Hifumi. She is also unable to keep cool while riding the roller coaster in the fourth island. And there's her mental breakdown when she realizes that Hina starving to death in the Funhouse will not trigger a Class Trial.
  • Off with Her Head!: Her body is discovered with her head missing. This also doubles as a Mythology Gag seeing that in canon, she wanted to be reincarnated as Marie-Antoinette after her death despite the fact that the latter was executed by decapitation. Her killer reveals that this was done as a way to honor her Last Request of making her death look dramatic.
  • Oh, Crap!: She has this reaction in the second trial when the other students don't believe her claims that she didn't kill Hifumi.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: She admits to having vandalized Kiyotaka's cottage, setting the trap to having kill Hifumi and impersonating Mukuro during the trial as she isn't the one who killed Hifumi. Unfortunately, it only places more suspicion on her as a whole since those acts are pretty damning.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Zigzagged. Celestia dies as the victim of the fourth murder case rather than the culprit of the third murder case. However, the Killing Game taking place inside the Neo World Program means that as a result of her avatar experiencing death in Jabberwock Island, she has been rendered comatose in the real world.

    Chihiro Fujisaki
Chihiro Fujisaki

Ultimate Programmer

    Aoi Asahina
Aoi "Hina" Asahina

Ultimate Swimming Pro

The Ultimate Swimming Pro and a participant of the Killing School Trip. Aoi dies of starvation and dehydration in Chapter 4 after refusing to eat or drink following her mental breakdown combined with the motive.
  • Break the Cutie: Almost everything that happens in Jabberwock Island takes a toll on Aoi's sanity and sends her into depression. At the start of Chapter 4, she's completely paranoid and refuses to interact with others more than necessary. She ultimately succumbs to the starvation motive and dies in the Funhouse.
  • Death by Adaptation: Aoi was a survivor in the original Trigger Happy Havoc. Here she dies in Chapter 4 by starvation and dehydration following her mental breakdown. However, the Killing Game taking place inside the Neo World Program means that as a result of her avatar experiencing death in Jabberwock Island, she has been rendered comatose in the real world.
  • Death by Despair: After her breakdown at the end of Chapter 3, Aoi doesn't eat or drink anything even before entering the Funhouse, seemingly having lost all hope of surviving the killing game. It ends with her death in the Funhouse.
  • Death by Irony: A tragic example. Hina is known for her huge appetite and love for junk food, especially donuts. She ends up starving to death.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Seems to have crossed it at the beginning of Chapter 4, if her giving a Despair fragment during her Free Time with Mukuro is any indication.
  • Downer Ending: She ends up dying in the funhouse from starvation, having completely broken down, crossed the Despair Event Horizon and seemingly given up on surviving the killing game. After her body is discovered, the others are powerless to do anything other than leave her inside her room to rot until the next Class Trial. Easily the most hopeless fate in the killing game.
  • Foreshadowing: While tragic, her relatively quick death by starvation is an early indicator that more time has passed in the Funhouse than the students think.
  • Heroic BSoD: After the third trial, she completely shuts down, refuses to interact with the group any more than absolutely necessary, locks herself in her assigned room in the Funhouse and loses all hope.
  • The Scapegoat: Kyoko had originally intended on framing Hina for Mondo's death, but after Genocider Syo and Toko walked in on her killing him, Kyoko had to improvise, choosing to lock both Toko and Syo in the Music Venue's basement and pinning the crime on Syo.
  • Stepford Smiler: Aoi tries desperately to maintain a positive outlook throughout the killing game, even while struggling with the pain and trauma of Sakura and Sayaka's betrayals up until Kyoko's betrayal finally causes her to give up completely.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Her best friend Sakura is executed in the first trial, Sayaka holds her hostage at knifepoint at the end of the second trial in an attempt to prevent Monokuma from executing her, and in the third trial Kyoko insults her right before her execution, telling her that she's surprised she has managed to survive for so long and that she shouldn't be alive. By the time Chapter 4 rolls, she has become paranoid and thinks that everyone else will betray her as well. It doesn't get any better, as her depression prevented her from eating anything before entering the Funhouse and ends up starving to death. To rub more salt in the wound, a Class Trial is not held for her since she technically died of natural causes and Monokuma leaves her body to rot inside the room she locked herself in until the Class Trial takes place.

    Mondo Owada
Mondo Owada

Ultimate Biker Gang Leader

The Ultimate Biker Gang Leader and a participant of the Killing School Trip. Mondo is the first victim of Chapter 3, being stabbed in the neck with a pair of Genocider Syo's scissors by Kyoko and then mounted on the wall of a Hospital Room with more of those same scissors.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Mondo dies as a victim instead of a culprit here.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Due to Leon preventing Taka and Mondo from having the endurance contest they had in canon, the two of them don't bond and remain antagonistic towards each other. Instead, Leon and Mondo end up becoming friends due to their shared distaste for authority figures. That said, Magical Girls Unite! shows that Taka and Mondo were indeed inseparable during their time at Hope's Peak.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Mondo is stabbed in the neck with a pair of scissors instead of being melted into butter.
  • Dramatic Irony: Mondo is shown to be an incredibly chivalrous boy who believes it is a man's duty to keep women out of danger. Both the cases he was alive and present for involved male victims who were killed by female culprits, and his own eventual killer, Kyoko, is female as well.
  • Jerkass to One: He doesn't get along with Kiyotaka and is far more antagonistic towards him than any of the other students, mainly because Leon prevents the two from having the contest that led to them bonding in canon.
  • Ship Tease: He gets a few of these moments with Mukuro throughout the story. In Chapter 2, Taka also implies that Mondo may have a crush on Mukuro.
  • Shrinking Violet: Mondo becomes this after getting infected with the Despair Disease, as, according to Leon, it is the one thing Mondo fears ever becoming.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Zigzagged. Mondo dies as the first victim of the third case rather than the culprit of the second case. The Killing Game taking place inside the Neo World Program means that as a result of his avatar experiencing death in Jabberwock Island, he has been rendered comatose in the real world.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: In Chapter 3, Mondo turns Byakuya's speech about his superiority over him and the other students back to Byakuya. Mukuro notes that it is also one of the few times Byakuya has been affected by something.

    Leon Kuwata
Leon Kuwata

Ultimate Baseball Star

  • Cassandra Truth: After Kiyotaka's cottage is vandalized, Leon insists that wasn't him or Mondo, but since they both spend most of Chapter 2 mocking him and Leon was found laughing in front of it, Taka naturally doesn't believe him.
  • Not His Sled: 11037 is a clue during the first case yet again. However, it does not implicate Leon as the blackened, but rather refers to one of the prophecies Yasuhiro made before dying; more specifically, the prophecy of Sakura killing someone. In fact, Leon himself is the one who points out that the numbers might actually be letters, but the theory gets quickly shot down by Kyoko.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: His perk allows him to skip a Class trial. After learning that it does not allow him to escape execution should the other students get the culprit wrong, he decides not to use it anymore.
  • Spanner in the Works: Him keeping Sayaka's invitation to her Beach Party is what ultimately proves that Sayaka had forged a note and passed it as Hifumi's due to both the invitation and the note having the same handwriting. Had he not kept it Sayaka would have gotten away the murder, as Makoto lost his invitation.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: As of the end of Chapter 4, Leon is still alive, whereas he was executed as the culprit of the first murder case in the original Trigger Happy Havoc.

    Junko Enoshima
Junko Enoshima

Ultimate Fashionista

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In canon it's heavily implied that Junko's hair and eyes are actually red. Here she dons a red wig and contact lenses while in her Ryoko Otonashi disguise, though Mukuro does state that Junko's hair is dyed.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Junko is not obsessed with Despair this time around and actually has a healthy relationship with her sister Mukuro, as them insulting each other is clearly just friendly bickering.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Instead of Mukuro being an Extreme Doormat to Junko and letting herself be insulted by her, the twins are portrayed as bickering siblings that care about each other, with Mukuro insulting Junko just as much as she does.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even if she's still a thrill junkie, Junko comes to hate the Killing Game and the despair it produces.
Junko: Whatever. Back to the point. Like, this whole killing game schtick? Seemed almost fun at first. First time I felt alive in a while, actually. It sucked getting to know these weirdos and seeing them die, but it didn’t just suck, it... Really sucked. And made me feel like shit. And it was something I never expected!
Mukuro: You? THE Junko Enoshima couldn't expect having a conscience?
Junko: The idea of death never bothered me. Life was always a bore that I wanted to spice up. But this whole thing is just... different. It's special. It's full of excitement and emotions! Except... in the worst way! And best way! And... You get me, don't you?
Mukuro: ...Yeah. I don’t think we're on entirely the same wavelength here, but... I kinda do. I think.
Junko: But you know what? This shit just sucks! Not in "finally stirring me alive" kind of sucks, but "makes me want to kill myself" sucks! I'm done with this depressive bullshit.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Junko loves an opportunity to get drunk. She even has to attend the first Class Trial completely hungover!
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: When Mukuro begins to despair about her uselessness in the Funhouse and leaving Junko to do all the thinking to find an exit, Junko slaps her and tells her that she's the only one who's allowed to insult her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Underneath it all, Junko is shown to genuinely care about Mukuro's safety and even gets a few Pet the Dog moments towards the others, such as organizing a funeral service and proper burial for the deceased in Chapter 3.
  • Lack of Empathy: Even if Junko is far more benevolent in this version, she doesn't really care about anyone who isn't her or Mukuro as seen in her discussion with her sister in Chapter 1 or during her investigation in Chapter 4's Deadly Life.
  • Shipper on Deck: She seems to be one for Mukuro and Makoto, although it mostly seems to be so she can tease Mukuro about it.
  • Thrill Seeker: While she's not the Ultimate Despair in this continuity, Junko still gets bored very quickly and is always looking for ways to spice things up.
  • Valley Girl: The Despair Disease causes Junko to, in Mukuro's words, "act like a stupid bimbo". It's also implied by Usami that this is an attitude that Junko heavily dislikes.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Mukuro. Both sisters constantly insult one another, but it is clear that they care about each other.

    The 17th Student
Genocider Syo

Ultimate Murderous Fiend

Also known as "Genocide Jack", Genocider Syo is Toko Fukawa's Split Personality given a body of her own, and therefore a participant of the Killing School Trip. Syo is the second victim of Chapter 3, strangled to death by Toko and then hung by Kyoko.
  • Asshole Victim: She's killed by Toko in Chapter 3 after Toko realizes that she won't get punished due to Kyoko already having killed Mondo beforehand. Given that she was a serial killer with a huge body count (which includes Kiyotaka's father) whom Toko blames for ruining her life and the fact that none of the students mourn her death, you can't really blame Toko for killing her.
  • Death by Adaptation: Toko was a survivor in the original Trigger Happy Havoc, therefore Genocider Syo was a survivor as well. Being a Literal Split Personality, Toko kills her when she has the chance, claiming that she is responsible for ruining her life. Given that Syo doesn't have a body of her own in the real world, it's likely that she will stay dead and that Toko will lose her Split Personality.
  • Didn't Think This Through: After Kyoko trapped her and Toko in the Music Venue's basement, Syo saw right through Kyoko's plan of making her kill Toko and using her as a false culprit and began to break the door while asking Toko to help her. She forgot she was trapped with the one whose life was ruined thanks to her, who had previously attacked her when she was drunk, and who can now kill her without being at risk of execution.
  • Foreshadowing: In Chapter 2 she mentions that she can imagine Mondo as one of her victims. In Chapter 3 Mondo is found dead in the same way all of Genocider Syo's victims were, with the only difference being that Kyoko was the one who killed Mondo, not Syo.
  • Genre Savvy: Upon discovering Hifumi's note inviting her to the library, she simply throws it through her cottage's window, correctly guessing that an invitation to meet someone alone in a Killing Game is clearly a bad idea.
  • He Knows Too Much: Magical Girls Unite! reveals that she killed Kiyotaka's father because he was about to expose her as Toko's Serial Killer Split Personality.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: At the beginning of Chapter 3 she decides to ditch her glasses for contact lenses in order to differentiate her from Toko.
  • In-Series Nickname: She is called Genocider Syo despite the fact that Class Swap 2 uses many elements of the official English localization. It's revealed that "Genocide Jack" is just how Syo is known outside of Japan In-Universe.
  • Literal Split Personality: The New World Program somehow managed to separate Genocider Syo from Toko and give her a body of her own.
  • The Scapegoat: After Genocider Syo and Toko walk in on Kyoko killing Mondo, Kyoko, infected with the Despair Disease, decides to use Syo as her new fall guy instead of Hina and locks both Toko and Syo in the Music Venue's basement. When she discovers that Toko had killed Genocider Syo while she was away, Kyoko infects Toko with the Despair Disease by fluid exchange, so she begins acting like Genoicder Syo, and then proceeds to use her perk to edit the Monokuma file so it says that Toko died instead of Syo.
  • Twin Switch: After finding out that Toko killed Syo, Kyoko infects Toko with the Despair Disease so she begins acting like Genocider Syo, the most despised version of herself. This is all part of Kyoko's plan to frame Syo for Mondo's death.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: After she threw Hifumi's invitation out of her cottage, Celeste found it and wrongly concluded that it was meant for her, as the letter was addressed to a "dark-haired witch," leading her to prepare a trap against her supposed murderer that would end up leading to Hifumi's and Sayaka's demises.
