Fanfic / Danganronpa Class Swap

Go To

Danganronpa Class Swap is a series of fanfics written by Heroman3003, which as you might guess from the title, swaps the roles of the casts of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair in their respective settings.

The first story, Danganronpa Class Swap - Hope's Peak Academy follows Mahiru Koizumi, incoming Ultimate Photographer of Class 78 of Hope's Peak as she and her fellow new classmates wake up to find themselves trapped in Hope's Peak at the mercy of a robotic monochrome bear who informs them that the only way to escape is to kill one of their fellow classmates and get away with it. Mahiru and her classmates must find a way to escape the school while getting to the bottom of how they ended up getting trapped inside in the first place and being forced to solve the murders of their fellow classmates along the way. It was completed on February 7, 2021.

The sequel, Danganronpa Class Swap 2 - Jabberwock Island follows Mukuro Ikusaba, the Ultimate ??? of Class 77-B as she and her classmates find themselves on a school trip, hosted by a kind rabbit named Usami, before Monokuma shuts down the trip and starts hosting yet another Killing Game.

This series contains the following tropes:

    open/close all folders

Danganronpa Class Swap - Hope's Peak Academy
  • Absence of Evidence: This ends up being what exposes the blackened in the third trial: Because Sonia's lab didn't contain any debris from when Nekomaru crashed through its ceiling, the only way the culprit would have been able to dispose of it would be if they were the person on cleaning duty at the time, which just happened to be Peko.
  • Accidental Murder: The truth of Chapter 4 is that Teruteru accidentally electrocuted himself through the makeshift radio's exposed wiring, and because of that Kazuichi (who built the radio and forgot to tell Teruteru of the danger because the latter was sick) is declared blackened.
  • Accidental Pervert:
    • During Ibuki's dance party in Chapter 4, when Nagito flips a coin as part of a bet with Mahiru on whether or not there will be any more murders, the coin ends up landing in Mikan's shirt. Hajime attempts to reach in to grab it out, only for his arm to get stuck in her shirt.
    • During Chapter 5's Deadly Life, Ryota falls onto Mikan and accidently gropes her.
  • Adaptational Badass: Unlike in canon, where Hajime's personality only reemerged in Izuru following their experiences in the Neo World Program, here, Hajime manages to reemerge on his own, earning himself the title of Ultimate Vessel, whereas in canon he never actually had an Ultimate title.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Downplayed with Izuru. While he's still the same easily bored unhelpful individual he was in canon, he does end up contributing useful information during the investigations and Class Trials. Chiaki indicates during the Final Trial that during their time at Hope's Peak, he and Hajime had gotten close enough to share memories with each other which in turn caused Izuru to warm up to his fellow classmates.
    • Subverted with Nagito. He's still the same Hope-and-Talent-obsessed Spanner in the Works who runs off of Blue-and-Orange Morality that he was in canon, he's just better at hiding his true nature this time around. And then Double Subverted as other than nearly getting Hajime killed as a result of his and Izuru's Faking the Dead scheme, he doesn't do anything truly villainous this time around.
    • Played straight with Mikan and Teruteru, who don't fall to despair and commit murder here, although Teruteru does try.
    • Also downplayed with Gundam, whose murder was for a noble reason, but here he never commits murder for any reason.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed with Peko and Fuyuhiko as a result of the horrible chain of events caused by their respective Motive Videos, leading to both of them dying without showing any of their redeeming qualities or genuine concern for their classmates, with Fuyuhiko being killed while in the process of attempting a murder, and Peko being completely remorseless over murdering Akane, in contrast to her canon self's remorse for killing Mahiru.
  • Adaptation Name Change: More like Adaptation Title Change in Izuru's case. He still has every Ultimate Talent stuffed into his brain, but according to Jin Kirigiri's notes on the Kamukura project, his official title is now literally the Ultimate Talent rather than the Ultimate Hope.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Hiyoko's positive traits get much more focus here, being shown as a devoted and helpful friend to Mahiru who genuinely makes an effort to be nicer to others, even Mikan and Kazuichi, her primary bullying targets in canon.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: In canon, Kazuichi and Gundham were rivals for Sonia's affection, and while their relationship here starts out the same with it initially getting even worse in the immediate aftermath of Sonia's execution, following their fight in Chapter 3, they end up becoming good friends on the level of Taka and Mondo, working together to undermine Monokuma's authority. Unfortunately, it ends up going the same way as Taka and Mondo's friendship with Kazuichi ending up getting executed as the technical blackened of the fourth trial. Unlike Kiyotaka in the original game however, Gundham ends up surviving the Killing Game.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Chiaki and Sonia of all people end up becoming the first and second culprits here respectively whereas they were both Nice Girls in the original game and anime. Although it is downplayed in the case of the latter, since she only commits murder to protect a state secret that could trigger a civil war and accepts her death gracefully once she is caught.
    • Downplayed with Akane, who attempts to murder Nekomaru in order to use Monokuma's eleven-million-dollar motive to get her family out of poverty but is unable to go through with it at the last minute.
    • Chiaki Nanami is the Mastermind and the Ultimate Despair in this continuity, having faked her death by having the Ultimate Imposter be the one to take her place in the execution.
    • The Ultimate Imposter is not only blackened in this continuity, but they willingly joined Ultimate Despair rather than being brainwashed into it.
  • Admiring the Abomination: Upon learning about the Kamukura Project from Jin Kirigiri's notes during the final investigation, Nagito is impressed that the Steering Committee succeeded in "creating" an individual who manages to embody every Ultimate talent.
  • Age Lift: Inverted. Since Mahiru and the others are part of Hope's Peak Class 78 rather than 77-B, they're a year younger than in canon.
  • All for Nothing: All of Kazuichi's attempts at Taking the Heat in the second trial in order to cover up Sonia's poisoning of Hiyoko are thwarted as Mahiru, Mikan, and Izuru are able to uncover the poisoning and so expose Sonia.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: The second half of Chapter 5's Deadly Life investigation period is told from Mikan's POV as she, Ryota, and Hajime investigate the lower floors while Mahiru, Ibuki, and Gundham are cut off by the gate leading to the fourth floor.
  • Anti-Villain: Sonia. She only attempts to poison Kazuichi in order to keep her Dark Secret about her family not being the legitimate rulers of the Novoselian throne quiet and he's so successful about covering up Hiyoko's poisoning that she only realizes that she's the blackened once the true cause of death is revealed.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Nagito lends Izuru a hand in faking his own death by chopping off said hand with a cleaver.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Mahiru, a popular member amongst the SDR2 cast who was killed off early on in the original game as the second victim, serves as the primary POV protagonist here.
    • Ryota Mitarai is an active participant in this Killing Game, whereas he only appeared in the DR3 anime in canon.
  • Asshole Victim: Fuyuhiko is ultimately revealed to have been caught attempting to set up a Death Trap to kill someone only for his killer to turn his own trap on him.
  • Awakening the Sleeping Giant: Izuru spends most of the story not really caring about the killing game since he doesn't believe he's in any real danger. Then Monokuma declares Kazuichi blackened over a complete accident, making Izuru realize that the mastermind will violate their own rules to kill them. Within two chapters, he and Nagito have masterminded a fake murder plot and orchestrated the final downfall of the mastermind.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • In Chapter 3, Monokuma states that he had prepared a ten-million-dollar reward for whoever gets away with murder successfully, but he decided to scratch it and instead offer... an eleven-million-dollar reward.
    • Throughout Chapter 3's Daily Life, the fight between Kazuichi and Gundam has slowly been built up as the chapter's climax with the indication that the next body's going to be found either during or just after it. The fight ends up happening entirely offscreen and the next bodies aren't found until the morning after. Even the Monokuma Theater segment following this is surprised at this development.
  • Big Damn Heroes: If it wasn't for Mikan overcoming the attack on her in the Ultimate Nurse's Lab during the second investigation to make it to the trial in time and reveal that Hiyoko's stab wound was inflicted postmortem, the rest of the class would have incorrectly voted Kazuichi as the blackened and end up being executed.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Izuru gives one at the end of the fourth trial when Monokuma reveals that the blackened behind Teruteru's death is Kazuichi rather than Teruteru being responsible for his own death like Izuru believed.
  • Blatant Lies: Nagito's Ultimate Lucky Student's Lab is clearly just Celestia Ludenberg's Ultimate Gambler's Lab with a placard reading "Ultimate Lucky Student's Lab" being placed over the actual label. Jin Kirigiri's notes that Mahiru and Nagito find during the final investigation indicate that during her time at Hope's Peak, Celeste had been sharing her lab with both Nagito and Makoto.
  • Book Ends:
    • The first trial ended with Chiaki (or rather the Ultimate Imposter disguised as Chiaki) getting executed as the blackened. The final trial ends with the actual Chiaki getting executed as the mastermind.
    • The first part of the Prologue is titled "First Shot of New Despair." The Epilogue is titled "First Shot of New Hope."
  • Breaking the Fellowship: This happens to the remaining survivors in Chapter 4 as a result of Monokuma revealing Teruteru's status as The Mole, with only Mahiru, Nagito, Ryota, Kazuichi, and to a lesser extent, Mikan willing to give Teruteru another chance.
  • The Cameo: Sato appears here as the subject of Mahiru's Motive Video.
  • Camera Fiend: Mahiru, as usual. This actually helps her greatly in the final trial; since she's the Ultimate Photographer, she's the one who took the photos Monokuma uses to sow discord amongst the survivors, meaning she's the only one everyone trusts.
  • Catchphrase Interruptus: At the start of the third trial, Monokuma begins giving his usual speech explaining how the Class Trial works, only to be interrupted by his own morning announcement playing.
Monokuma: Well, this was awkward. I'll make sure to turn them off when the trial happens next time.
  • Chekhov's Gun: While searching for Hajime in the garbage level at the start of Chapter 6, Mahiru comes across a giant jetpack. That same jetpack appears again in the Ultimate Punishment, with the implication Chiaki used it to execute Jin Kirigiri by shooting him into the sun.
  • Closest Thing We Got: Mikan is the only student with medical training, so the group uses her as an impromptu coroner and surgeon.
  • Comforting Comforter: At the end of Chapter 5, Mahiru finds Mikan sleeping on the bed in her lab. Mahiru proceeds to pull the covers over her before leaving.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: While she was initially able to pass of Teruteru's attempt at killing Ryota as a one-time thing, walking in on Fuyuhiko setting up his Death Trap convinced Chiaki that the only way for the game to end was for someone to actually kill someone and try to get away with it, leading to her using his own trap on him.
  • Dark Secret: Like in Trigger Happy Havoc, Monokuma presents these as the second motive. The secrets range from the mundane (Mahiru doctoring several of her photos and lying about it, Mikan being conditioned to enjoy being abused) to the serious (Hajime's "Izuru" identity, Sonia's family not being the true heirs to the Novoselian throne, Peko's status as a hitwoman for the Kuzuryu organization).
  • Death by Adaptation: Outside of the different victims and killers, the fact that this Killing Game is taking place in the real world rather than the Jabberwock Island simulation means that all deaths here are permanent with no hopes of revival.
    • Fuyuhiko, a survivor in canon ends up becoming the first victim here.
    • Played with in regards to Chiaki. Although the fact that this is the real flesh-and-blood Chiaki and not an A.I. means that she wasn't killed in Junko's maze like in canon, unlike her Alter Ego counterpart, who was executed as the fifth culprit, here she's executed as the first. And then it turns out she's actually still alive and is the mastermind. And then she's executed for real as the mastermind.
    • Hiyoko is the victim of Chapter 2, one chapter earlier than in canon.
    • Sonia, a survivor in canon, ends up being executed as the second culprit.
    • The victims of Chapter 3 are Nekomaru (one chapter earlier than in canon) and Akane (a survivor in canon).
    • Kazuichi, a survivor in canon is executed as the technical blackened in the fourth trial.
    • In Chapter 6, Gundham's hamsters, the Four Dark Devas of Destruction, are revealed to have died of natural causes during the two years Gundham was attending Hope's Peak. The hamsters he finds in his room, the Twelve Zodiac Generals, are the offsprings of the Devas.
  • Death by Irony: At the end of the Ultimate Imposter's execution as Chiaki, they expected the Monokuma dragon to seemingly eat them, allowing them to continue assisting Chiaki at her side, only for Chiaki to have the dragon burn them to a crisp. When the Imposter's execution shows up again at the close of the Ultimate Punishment, Chiaki expects the Monokuma dragon to incinerate her, only for the dragon to bite her in two.
  • Decoy Antagonist: Fuyuhiko has an antagonistic role throughout Chapter 1's Daily Life, similar to Byakuya's, but he himself becomes the first victim.
  • Decoy Protagonist: More like Decoy Deuteragonist. Hiyoko has a very strong bond with Mahiru and is her primary assistant in the first investigation. Much like Sayaka with Makoto in canon however, Hiyoko ends up dying, albeit one chapter later than Sayaka, with Mikan and Hajime being revealed as the true assistant characters.
  • Desecrating the Dead: Kazuichi inflicts numerous stab wounds to Hiyoko's dead body to disguise the fact that she had been poisoned by Sonia.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • The Steering Committee believed that Hajime's personality would be completely destroyed once Izuru was implanted in him like in canon. Thus it came as a complete surprise that Hajime's personality was able to reemerge from within Izuru.
    • Izuru is thrown for a loop and a half when Monokuma declares Kazuichi the blackened of the fourth trial rather than Teruteru being the one responsible for his own death.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • Rather than the "Please Insert Coin" execution her Alter Ego counterpart had in canon, Chiaki's new execution here "Boss Rush" has her running around a dungeon cosplaying as various video game characters and being attacked by Monokuma-themed enemies before ultimately being incinerated alive by a giant Monokuma dragon. This ends up being Foreshadowing that it's not actually Chiaki being killed but the Ultimate Imposter.
    • In spite of "One Woman Army" still being Peko's execution, what ultimately kills her is different. Rather then getting endlessly stabbed, she is cut in half by one of the robots.
    • Hiyoko is poisoned rather than getting her throat slit.
    • In addition to dying as a victim rather than getting executed as a culprit, Teruteru is electrocuted rather then getting boiled alive.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Peko pretends to assist Akane in her murder plan to kill Nekomaru in order to keep the killing game going and open up the fourth floor in order to further her goal of finding and killing the mastermind in revenge for Fuyuhiko's death. Once Akane is unable to go through with her killing, Peko promptly disposes of her.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: While searching Jin Kirigiri's dorm during the final investigation, Mahiru and Izuru find a photograph of him with Kyoko.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Mahiru has this reaction to Nagito dubbing her as "The Ultimate Hope" in the epilogue. The other survivors on the other hand, embrace it.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Kazuichi is able to realize his status as the technical blackened of the fourth trial at the same time as Mahiru and even though he's terrified of being executed for a crime he didn't even commit, unlike in the second trial where he was perfectly willing to kill himself and everyone else in order to protect Sonia, this time he's perfectly willing to give up his life to protect the people he's come to regard as his friends.
  • Faking the Dead:
    • Nagito and Izuru fake the former's death for the fifth trial by hiding his severed hand and sliced-up pillowcase stuffings in a plastic bag and placing them in the freezer vent to make it appear that the bag was full of body parts before taking all the meat in the locker and feeding it to the carnivorous plant on the fifth floor to make it appear that the rest of the "body" was fed to the plant.
    • Chiaki has the Ultimate Imposter pose as her at the start of the Killing Game, allowing her to continue working as the mastermind without suspicion after they're executed at the end of the first trial.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The titles of the chapters make reference to the chapter's murder case.
      • Chapter 1 is titled "Begin the Game of Despair". Chiaki, The Ultimate Gamer, is the culprit.
      • Chapter 2 is titled "When Life Gives You Oranges". Hiyoko dies after drinking an orange juice that had been poisoned by Sonia.
      • Chapter 3 is titled "Dangan Fight Club; No Combat Pets Allowed". Akane and Nekomaru, who train Kazuichi and Gundham for their upcoming fight, are the victims. The "Combat Pets" part does not refer to Gundham, but to the chapter's killer, Peko, due to her seeing herself as Fuyuhiko's "tool".
      • Chapter 4 is titled "Feast of Regrets". Monokuma exposes Teruteru, the Ultimate Cook, as his traitor, and he becomes the chapter's victim.
      • Chapter 5 is titled "One in a Million Chance of Successful Failure". Not only is Nagito the apparent victim of the chapter, but it's also revealed that it was all a Faking the Dead scheme by Nagito and Izuru to expose the Mastermind, which turned out succesfully.
    • Upon finding the names of their class roster during the beginning of Chapter 4's Daily Life and noticing Byakuya Togami's name on it, Nagito comments that he thought Togami was supposed to be part of the previous Hope's Peak class. This of course foreshadows the fact that the "Togami" in their class is in fact the Ultimate Imposter.
    • The twist of Kazuichi as the technical blackened of the fourth trial even though he didn't actually do anything to kill anyone is foreshadowed by Mahiru using the past trials as evidence:
      • Sonia is labeled the culprit of Chapter 2 rather than Kazuichi (who handed the poisoned juice) or Hiyoko (who drank it) because she was the only one who knew that the juice that killed Hiyoko was poisoned.
      • Following the third trial's voting, Monokuma labels Akane as the blackened behind Nekomaru's death because she chained Nekomaru to the bed even though Nekomaru's death was caused by his own struggles to free himself.
    • When Mahiru encounters Izuru at one point during Chapter 5, he reveals to her that he found out about the student handbooks' weakness to extreme heat by throwing Chiaki's into the sauna. This ends up being what clues Mahiru in to Chiaki being the mastermind and having been replaced by the Ultimate Imposter at the start of the Killing Game during the Chapter 6 trial since Chiaki's handbook should have already been destroyed during her execution due to her being burned alive by the Monokuma dragon.
    • Mahiru's nightmare in Chapter 5 notably includes two more people than the number of victims at this point: a bloodied hand, foreshadowing how Nagito's "body" will be found, and a mummified corpse, which is probably what would have happened to Hajime/Izuru if their execution hadn't failed. Also, among the missing people in the cafeteria when Mahiru arrives is Chiaki, indicating that the real one is still alive.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Ryota wants to use the anime he's working on to try to inspire hope among others. It ends up having the same brainwashing capabilities as the Despair Video Junko had him make in canon, so when he shows it to Mahiru, she ends up becoming Nagito-lite.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Peko gets cut in half during her execution in Chapter 3.
  • High-Voltage Death:
    • In Chapter 1, Fuyuhiko is shocked to death by Chiaki via the very same trap Fuyuhiko was setting up.
    • In Chapter 4, Teruteru accidentally shocks himself to death when he attempts to use Kazuichi's makeshift radio to call for help by touching the exposed wiring. Because Kazuichi made the radio and no one had told Teruteru that touching the wiring could be lethal, Monokuma declares Kazuichi as the blackened.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Fuyuhiko is killed by Chiaki finishing the Death Trap she caught him setting up and using it on him.
  • I Lied: During the second trial, Mahiru's trying to figure out who was the first person to discover Hiyoko's body, since the Body Discovery Announcement went off when only she and Mikan discovered it. Nagito states that he was the first to discover the body and was in the process of trying to alert the other students when the announcement played. After Hiyoko's true cause of death of poisoning is revealed, making Kazuichi the actual first person to discover the body, Mahiru confronts Nagito on this, causing Nagito to admit he lied in order to speed the trial along since they had no way of solving that part of the mystery at the time.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice:
    • Sonia is executed by falling onto a bunch of pitchforks being held up by a mob of Monokumas.
    • Peko kills Akane by stabbing her In the Back with her bamboo-concealed kendo sword.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • The first murder attempt is still Teruteru attempting to kill someone to get back to his mama, although this time Ryota sees right through him and thwarts it by recruiting Akane as a bodyguard.
    • Despite the change in classes, the second chapter still reveals one of the cast has a split personality.
    • Though the circumstances surrounding it are vastly different from the ones in canon, Nekomaru still dies from falling from a great height.
    • Peko still gets executed and her execution is still "One Woman Army".
    • One of the students is still declared blackened for a death they weren't criminally responsible for.
    • Chapter 4 still results in a character who was previously indifferent towards the rest of the group deciding to defeat the mastermind after they violate the rules of the killing game.
    • Nagito still ends up becoming the victim of Chapter 5. Subverted when it turns out he's not actually dead. In a straight example, he's also still complicit in the crime.
    • Despite the change in classes, the fifth execution is still sabotaged and the "blackened" survives.
    • Hajime is still among the survivors despite no longer being the main protagonist.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: Monokuma's Motive Video for Peko stated that if she succeeded in killing someone and getting away with murder then both she and Fuyuhiko would be able to graduate together... on the condition that she doesn't tell anyone about it, not even Fuyuhiko. When Fuyuhiko demanded that she tell him what was on her video, Peko refused to do so, infuriating Fuyuhiko enough to begin setting up the Death Trap that would eventually lead to his demise.
  • Killed Off for Real: Because this is the real world as opposed to the Neo World Program, all the deaths here are permanent with no hopes of revival.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Since Chiaki didn't have access to Yasuke Matsuda's memory-erasing program in this continuity, she instead used Ryota's anime to brainwash her classmates into forgetting their time at Hope's Peak and the Tragedy. However, Ryota was immune to the effects of his own anime, so Chiaki and the Ultimate Imposter instead injected him with torture drugs to erase his memory, though he still got flashes of the Tragedy in his nightmares.
  • Last Episode, New Character: The post-Epilogue scene features Kazuo Tengan, Kyosuke Munakata, and Chisa Yukizome watching the end of the Killing Game from the Future Foundation headquarters while Makoto Naegi prepares to head towards Towa City for an unknown purpose.
  • Let Me at Him!: After the fourth culprit is executed, Ryota and Ibuki have to physically restrain Gundham from attacking Monokuma.
  • Lights Off, Somebody Dies: A blackout occurs in the whole building in Chapter 4, and when the lights come back on Teruteru is found dead in Kazuichi's Lab. It's revealed in the trial that Teruteru himself was the one who caused the blackout, as Nagito encouraged him to take part in his plan of disabling the broadcaster Monokuma was using to jam all signal and call for help using Kazuichi's radio. When Teruteru is about to use the radio however, he ends up touching its exposed wiring, which fatally electrocutes him.
  • The Mole: Just like with Sakura in canon, Monokuma forces Teruteru to serve as this for him by threatening to have Teruteru's family killed.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The fight between Kazuichi and Gundham ends up having the same results as Mondo and Taka's sauna contest.
    • Chapter 1 has someone attempting to lure their would-be victim with a note and trying to kill them, just like Sayaka did with Leon. Unlike in canon, the would-be victim survives because they found the note suspicious and brought someone along with them, who easily restrains the would-be killer. Additionally the murder case involves the victim setting up a murder trap, only to get Hoist by Their Own Petard. The practice sword made out of fake gold also plays a part in the case.
    • Much like in the original game, in Chapter 2 of this story the victim's body is desecrated by someone that is not the killer. Also, just like in the game, the chapter's victim is the Token Mini-Moe character, Hiyoko in this case.
    • Much like in the second chapter of Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, Chapter 2 here features the killer, who is charge of a country, receiving a motive that drives them to commit murder in order to protect their nation. The execution also features the blackened being offered the false hope of escape, only to be executed anyway.
    • Just like in the game Chapter 3 features the killer teaming up with another student to kill a chosen victim, only to then betray their accomplice and cause the deaths of two people. However, in the game Celeste manipulated Hifumi into killing Kiyotaka and then betrayed and killed Hifumi herself once he was no longer useful to her, whereas in this story Peko never meant for both Nekomaru and Akane to get killed, she only betrayed and killed Akane after she was unnable to go through with their plan to kill Nekomaru.
    • Just like in the canon game, the Chapter 3 killer is explicitly shown to be the most cold-blooded and unrepentant of the culprits.
    • Much like Chapter 1 of the original SDR2, Chapter 4 features both a party and a blackout arranged by Nagito that results in a death except this time, the latter doesn't interrupt the former and Teruteru is the victim instead of the killer.
    • Just like how Toko and Yasuhiro panicked and believed they each had killed Sakura in Chapter 4 of the original Trigger Happy Havoc, both Ibuki and Gundham believe they each had killed Teruteru in a fit of panic in Chapter 4 of this story.
    • The ending of Chapter 4 has Izuru warning Mahiru about the mysterious hidden student among them; the Ultimate Imposter, not so different from Kyoko warning Makoto about Mukuro Ikusaba's existance. For added extra points, the scene replays in Mahiru's head a few times during Chapter 5.
    • Mahiru's nightmare in Chapter 5 ends with her returning in the cafeteria and discovering the victims of the Killing Game in the state they died (along with what's implied to be Nagito's hand and Hajime's body if he hadn't survived his execution), similar to how Makoto hallucinated the dead members of Class 78 in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School.
    • The ending of the Chapter 5 Class Trial has Hajime seemingly survive his execution only to fall into the garbage chute like what happened to Makoto in the canon Trigger Happy Havoc.
    • Just like the Bad Ending of Chapter 5 of Trigger Happy Havoc, following Hajime's "execution," Mahiru states how she and the remaining survivors lived the rest of their days at Hope's Peak in peace and had children with each other. Fortunately, it turns out to be All Just a Dream.
    • As part of his and Izuru's Faking the Dead plan to trick Monokuma and the mastermind, Nagito cuts off his hand, which he did in canon with the intention of having it replaced with Junko's hand.
  • Neutral No Longer: Izuru spends most of the story indifferent to the chaos around him, but he commits to war against Monokuma when Kazuichi is declared the blackened of the fourth trial due to not informing Teruteru that the radio wasn't properly insulated. In Izuru's mind, this proves that playing along with the killing game will only get him killed.
  • Not His Sled: When Mahiru falls under suspicion in the fifth trial due to her prior knowledge of the Ulitmate Imposter's existence, you'd expect her to cover for Izuru like Makoto did for Kyoko in Chapter 5 of Trigger Happy Havoc. Instead, Mahiru truthfully reveals that Izuru was the one who told her about the Imposter, eventually resulting in Izuru being convicted as the blackened behind Nagito's death.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: The other students are openly distrustful of Teruteru as a result of him being the first to snap and try to commit murder.
  • Poor Communication Kills: When Kazuichi reveals the radio he's been working on to contact the outside world in Chapter 3, he states that it's capable of fatally shocking a person due to not being properly insulated. However, Teruteru was still sick with his fever when Kazuichi showed it to them and Mikan forgot to tell him while treating him, resulting in Teruteru being unaware of its dangers when he did find out. Thus, when he attempts to use the radio during the blackout he and Nagito cause, he ends up using it improperly and ends up fatally shocking himself. It's because of this that Monokuma is able to label Kazuichi the technical blackened of the fourth trial.
  • Properly Paranoid: Ryota receives an unsigned letter asking him to meet the author in the kitchen for a secret meeting. Feeling suspicious, he takes Akane with him as a bodyguard, and sure enough, Teruteru tries to kill him.
  • Red Herring: The title of Chapter 3 "Dangan Fight Club; No Combat Pets Allowed" makes you think that Gundham will either be the victim or culprit of the chapter. It actually refers to Peko seeing herself as nothing more than Fuyuhiko's tool or "combat pet" and how it causes her to become the chapter's blackened in her attempts to avenge him.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Gundham's hamsters, The Twelve Zodiac Generals are this to The Four Dark Devas of Destruction, as Gundham had lost them when entering the academy. It's later revealed that The Twelve Zodiac Generals are the offsprings of the The Four Dark Devas of Destruction, as these had died of natural causes during Gundham's time at Hope's Peak Academy.
  • Revealing Cover Up: The attack on Mikan in the Ultimate Nurse's Lab during the second investigation was done by Kazuichi in order to ensure she'd be unable to make it to the Class Trial to reveal that the sword wound he inflicted on Hiyoko was done post-mortem to cover up the fact that she died as a result of the poison Sonia intended for him.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Downplayed. Peko tells Mahiru that since Fuyuhiko's killer, Chiaki, has already been executed, she plans on killing the one who put them both in that situation: The Mastermind. Funnily enough, the Mastermind of this killing game turns out to be Chiaki, who Peko tried to kill after the first trial.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: At the beginning of the third trial, Teruteru theorizes that either Mahiru, Mikan, or Peko are the culprit, since both body discovery announcements played when four people discovered the bodies rather than the usual three and they were the ones present at both announcements. While Peko does turn out to be the blackened for the trial, the body discovery announcement just happens to be a coincidence.
  • Running Gag: Hiyoko stealing Kazuichi's breakfasts throughout Chapter 2. This ends up leading to her death as she winds up stealing Kazuichi's orange juice after Sonia had poisoned it.
  • Saying Too Much: While Mahiru was told about the existence of the Ultimate Imposter by Izuru following the fourth trial, the rest of the class didn't find out about them until the fifth investigation, so when Mahiru mentions that she "was wondering about that for a while" when Monokuma reveals that the Imposter was never a participant of the Killing Game, she ends up becoming a suspect.
  • Script Fic: All dialogue here is written in a script format.
  • Ship Tease: Mikan and Mahiru get a lot of moments together, with Mahiru being the one to comfort her about her Motive Video telling her that no one cares about her outside the school and the two girls embracing after being stuck on different floors during Chapter 5. Mahiru also gtes plenty of affectionate moments with Hajime, with her hugging him when meeting him in the trash pit after he almost got executed.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony gets several references here:
      • Like in V3, each student has their own Ultimate Research Lab in order to hone their talent. Unlike in V3 however, a student dying before their lab is discovered does not prevent others from entering it.
      • Several Class Trial mechanics introduced in V3 are also utilized here, like the Scrum Debate and the Argument Armament.
      • Like Ryoma, Mikan's Motive Video states that she doesn't have anyone who cares about her waiting on the outside.
    • The first part of Sonia's execution, "Novoselian Revolution," has her standing alongside cardboard cutouts of her family as they're shot down by Monokuma in a military outfit.
    • Jin Kirigiri's implied execution is called "Flight of Icarus" and involves being shot into the sun on a winged jetpack.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Along with the canon survivors of Hajime/Izuru and Ryota (who never participated in canon), Mahiru (the victim of Chapter 2), Mikan (the culprit of Chapter 3), Ibuki (the second victim of Chapter 3), Gundham (the culprit of Chapter 4), and Nagito (the "victim" of Chapter 5) all end up surviving the Killing Game this time around. Nagito in particular is an interesting Double Subversion. At first, it looks like he's the victim of Chapter 5 like in canon, but it turns out following the trial that he and Izuru were Faking the Dead.
    • The presence of Sato and Natsumi on Mahiru and Fuyuhiko's respective Motive Videos indicates that the Twilight Syndrome: Murder Case murders never occurred here. It's also highly likely that both of them ended up on the Warriors of Hope's Hit List in Towa City.
    • Zigzagged with Peko, who ends up being executed as the culprit of the third trial rather than the second. However the fact that this isn't the Neo World Program means that she's Killed Off for Real.
    • Also Zigzagged with Teruteru, who while being the victim of Chapter 4 rather than the culprit of Chapter 1, was killed in the real world, meaning that he's dead for good.
    • Chiaki's status as the Mastermind here means she's outlived both her original self (who was killed by Junko during the Tragedy) and her Alter Ego counterpart (who was executed by Monokuma as the Chapter 5 culprit).
    • Downplayed and Zigzagged with the Ultimate Imposter, who while still dying in the first chapter, is now the culprit, not the victim. Also, the fact that this wasn't the Neo World Program also means they have been Killed Off for Real.
  • Split Personality: Much like Toko and Genocide Jack, Izuru is treated as a split personality for Hajime.
  • Switching P.O.V.: During the second half of Chapter 5's Deadly Life, things switch over to Mikan's perspective as she, Hajime and Ryota investigate the first, second and third floors due to Mahiru, Gundham and Ibuki getting trapped on the upper floors.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Though the culprit of Chapter 3 makes it perfectly clear that they don't care at all about the remaining survivors, Nagito in his own way expresses sympathy for them right before their execution:
Nagito: You're right, Peko. Monokuma won't succeed in making you feel despair. After all...you've been in despair ever since Fuyuhiko's death, haven't you?
  • Taking the Heat: After Hiyoko dies and Kazuichi realizes that she unknowingly drank the poison Sonia intended for him, he attempts to prevent Sonia from being found out by stabbing Hiyoko's body and then readily confessing to the murder once Mahiru has him figured out as the one behind the attack on Mikan in her lab.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Chapter 2 Class Trial, Part 2. After spending the majority of the first half of the trial out of commission as a result of the attack on her during the investigation, Mikan arrives at the trial grounds in time to reveal that the stab wound on Hiyoko was inflicted after Hiyoko had already died, leading to the reveal that Hiyoko was not stabbed to death by Kazuichi as initially thought but was instead killed by drinking an orange juice Sonia had poisoned in an attempt to kill Kazuichi. After the voting, Sonia admits she tried to kill Kazuichi in order to prevent Monokuma from revealing her secret about her family not being the legitimate rulers of the Novoselian throne and is subsequently executed. Following the trial, Mikan is questioned why her secret was found in Hiyoko's possession after her death, causing Mikan to admit that the two of them traded secrets in an attempt to get closer with each other, only for the secret she received to actually be Peko's, causing Peko's status as a hitwoman for the Kuzuryus and the late Fuyuhiko's bodyguard to be revealed to the rest of the class. A brief epilogue scene sees Monokuma meeting with an unrevealed figure who's apparently meant to serve as The Mole for Monokuma. Upon being asked a question by the individual, Monokuma admits there are currently eighteen students in the school, confirming the existence of the up-to-this-point-unseen Ultimate Imposter.
    • Chapter 4 Class Trial, Part 2. Mahiru determines that the blackout right before Teruteru's death was caused by Teruteru himself and that Nagito was the accomplice in his plan, causing Nagito's true hope-and-talent-obsessed personality to be revealed to the remaining survivors. In the process, however, it's proven that Nagito also can't be the killer due to his location during the blackout. It's eventually discovered that Teruteru was killed when he attempted to take advantage of the blackout to use the radio Kazuichi had been working on to try to call for help, only to end up getting shocked due to Kazuichi not having finished insulating it yet. While most of the class, particularly Izuru, take this to mean Teruteru is the blackened of his own death, through a Scrum Debate, Mahiru realizes from the previous trial results, particularly Akane being the blackened of Nekomaru's death, that the blackened is the one who actually built the radio, Kazuichi, who is executed trying to get the remaining students to unite against Monokuma. Inspired by Teruteru and Kazuichi's sacrifices, the remaining survivors pledge to end the Killing Game, including Nagito and Izuru. In the epilogue scene, Mahiru encounters Izuru while getting a late night snack, who reveals the existence of the Ultimate Imposter to her.
    • Chapter 5 Class Trial, Part 2. Rather than cover up for Izuru like Makoto did for Kyoko, Mahiru reveals to the other students that Izuru was the one who told her about the Ultimate Imposter. It's then determined that Izuru found out about them through a roster list that was stolen from the Headmaster's office during the blackout in the previous chapter while the other item stolen in the blackout, the master key to every lock in the building, is found in Hajime's student handbook, causing the remaining students to vote Izuru as the blackened behind Nagito's death. Monokuma attempts to execute Hajime by spraying him with acid, but the acid runs out before it can reach him, causing Hajime to fall into the garbage chute instead. Though Monokuma is surprised that his execution failed, he's content with letting Hajime die of starvation in the school garbage as the remaining survivors end up living the rest of their lives in the school and have children with each other, content to live their lives in peace...
    • Chapter 5 Daily Life, Part 5. ...except that last part was just a nightmare of Mahiru's. After spending the remainder of the day with the other students and seeing how they're coping with the results of the trial, Mahiru goes to bed, only to end up being woken up by a still-alive Nagito.
    • Chapter 6 Trial, Part 1. The Ultimate Despair and mastermind of the Killing Game is revealed: Chiaki Nanami, who succesfully faked her death in Chapter 1 due to her accomplice, the Ultimate Imposter, taking her place at the start of the Killing Game.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Nekomaru gives this to Mahiru in Chapter 3 in order to get her out of her funk over Hiyoko's death, calling out her hypocrisy over giving up after having managed to keep the majority of her classmates on the right path so far.
    • Mahiru also gives one to Ryota after she and Mikan find him overworking himself in the Ultimate Animator's Lab, pointing out that not only is his giving up on eating and sleeping to work on his anime going to burn him out to the point that he'll likely collapse from exhaustion, leaving it unfinished, but also end up looking sloppy because his sleep-deprived brain ended up missing obvious errors.
    • Nekomaru ends up giving another one to Akane for trying to kill him for Monokuma's eleven million dollar motive, asking her if she could consider herself part of the family she's doing it for if she's willing to throw away her morals just for some money.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious: Inverted. During his What the Hell, Hero? speech to Akane over her and Peko trying to kill him for Monokuma's money so she could help her family, Nekomaru tells her that if she really is that sort of person, then she no longer has the right to call him "Coach." This ends up being the final straw that cause Akane not to go through with her murder scheme.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness:
    • Once Akane can no longer go through with her plan to murder Nekomaru, Peko promptly stabs her both to make sure Akane can't reveal her involvement and to progress the killing game in hopes of finding and disabling Monokuma's broadcaster.
    • Chiaki has no problem killing off her partner, the Ultimate Imposter, after they're found guilty in the first Class Trial.
  • You Remind Me of X: Akane tells Mahiru that Ryota reminds her of one of her younger siblings.

Danganronpa Class Swap 2 - Jabberwock Island
  • Accidental Murder: Sayaka didn't mean to kill Hifumi - she panicked when he tried to keep her quiet about his plan to kill Syo and broke a chandelier, killing him.
  • Actor Allusion: Kyoko is made leader of the students on Jabberwock and ends up getting executed as a blackened, much like Kaede, whom she shares a dub actress with.
  • Adaptational Badass: Downplayed with Usami, who is evenly matched with Monokuma here, preventing him from turning her into Monomi this time around, but is still unable to prevent him from turning the school trip into a Killing Game.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Junko Enoshima is not the Ultimate Despair who plunged the world into despair, nor is Mukuro Ikusaba aiding her in her plans.
    • In canon, Hifumi killed Kiyotaka to have Alter Ego to himself and was perfectly willing to damn everyone other than himself and Celeste in order to escape. Here, he instead attempts to kill Genocider Syo because she's a Serial Killer who murdered his new friend Kiyotaka's father, and planned to bury the body so it would never be discovered and no Class Trial would be held.
    • Zigzagged by Sayaka. In canon, her attack on Leon was a cold-blooded premeditated attempted murder, complete with setting Makoto up to take the fall. Here, she accidentally killed Hifumi in a panic after discovering his plot to kill Genocider Syo and her ensuing cover-up is motivated by a completely understandable fear for her own life. However, when she is finally caught, she resorts to taking Aoi hostage at knifepoint in order to prevent her own execution.
    • Played straight by Mondo and Celeste, who die as victims instead of culprits.
  • Adaptation Name Change: The Strawberry and Grape Houses in the Funhouse are renamed the Banana and Blueberry Houses here. The Banana house also has a triangular shape and is bigger than the Strawberry house, whereas the Blueberry house still has a hexagonal shape, but is smaller than the Grape House.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Rather than Mukuro always letting herself be an Extreme Doormat to Junko's insults and whims as in canon, their relationship here is presented as bickering siblings with Mukuro giving as good as she gets from her twin. Makoto, whose only knowledge of sibling interaction is limited to him and Komaru, is horrified by this.
    • Thanks to Leon preventing Mondo and Taka from having their endurance contest from canon, the two of them remain antagonistic towards each other. Meanwhile, Leon and Mondo end up bonding instead due their shared disdain for authority figures and Taka ends up forming his own friendship with Hifumi after the latter perks Taka's interests by referring to 2-D media as "a lesson in modern culture."
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Sakura not only is the first to commit murder here rather than killing herself to try to unite her classmates against the mastermind, but she even tries to pin the blame on Hina, her Morality Pet in canon! That said, it is downplayed in that she committed the murder in order to regain her lost memories in order to find out if Kenshiro's still alive, and during the trial, only makes the minimum effort to resist Mukuro's accusations of her and even implies before her execution that her attempting to blame Hina was to die with Hina hating a traitor rather than mourning a friend.
    • Kyoko ends up killing Mondo while infected with the Despair Disease and tries to frame Syo, Byakuya, and Aoi as the culprit.
    • Downplayed with Toko who ends up killing Genocider Syo in order to put an end to her Split Personality's years-long murder spree.
    • Downplayed with Byakuya, who commits the fourth killing in order to keep his promise to prevent more murders as best he can.
  • Age Lift: Since the cast of Trigger Happy Havoc has switched places with the cast of Goodbye Despair and therefore are part of Class 77-B rather than 78, they're all a year older than in canon.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Mukuro can only remember her childhood and her entrance to Hope's Peak Academy.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: Due to Mukuro being mostly incapacitated from severe malnutrition, Junko is the one who investigates Banana House during the fourth murder. Then Makoto gets to be the one who investigates Blueberry House.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: The second culprit delivers several as part of their post-trial breakdown and Motive Rant.
Sayaka: W-What? Do you seriously expect me... to just keel over and accept my death, huh? [...] Of course not! I wasn't about to just die! I know what happens to blackened! I didn't want to go through that! So I... I... I had to do what I did to try and live! To survive! I just didn't want to die! [...] Shut up! And you all, stop staring at me like that! Would you do anything different, huh?! Would you just give up your life if you accidentally killed someone? Would you?! WOULD YOU?!
Mukuro's narration: To that nobody had an answer... Even the more innocent ones like Aoi and Makoto seemed completely stumped by her question...
  • Ascended Extra: Mukuro Ikusaba is this, as she was the second death in the original game while posing as her sister, whereas here she is now not only her own character but also the main protagonist of the story.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Mukuro may have a more antagonistic relationship with Junko than in canon, but when her sister is infected with the Despair Disease, it's only due to Kyoko's insistence that the infected remain properly isolated that she isn't by Junko's side throughout. She even actively considers forcing Kyoko to commit suicide at one point in order to cure Junko and the others.
  • Better Manhandle the Murder Weapon: When Makoto discovers Yasuhiro's corpse, his first move is to yank the sword out of his body in the hopes of saving him. Not only would this have unplugged the wound and killed Yasuhiro faster if he was still alive, but he naturally looks guilty as sin when Kiyotaka finds him. Everyone calls them out on how stupid this was afterwards.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Upon introducing Mukuro to Sayaka in the prologue, Makoto uses Sayaka's usual line about her being psychic when Sayaka manages to correctly guess what Mukuro's thinking. Sayaka then chastises Makoto for saying her usual line before finishing the second half of the catchphrase about her just having really good intuition.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: In Chapter 5, a disagreement between Makoto and Junko devolves into the entire class arguing about the traitors, Junko pointing out that despite the surviving students having developed bonds over shared loss, it doesn't change the fact that two of them are working with the hosts of the game, that both are probably still alive by this point, and they seem to have done everything in their power to stop their attempt to communicate with the outside world if the terminal found in Chihiro's Lab is any indication, while Makoto argues that as far they know the traitors might not want to hurt them, seem to have destroyed the arcade game to get rid of the second motive and that they got the information about the traitors from Monokuma and Usami, the two probably having ulterior motives to reveal that. After Chihiro breaks up the fight, Mukuro concedes that they should stay cautious about it like Junko said, but that Makoto is also right that fighting over who's the traitor is pointless when they don't even know if those traitors are even a threat.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Celeste catches the Despair Disease, she becomes totally honest with everyone, even going as far as to abandon her Celestia Ludenberg persona and revert back to Taeko Yasuhiro.
  • Call-Back:
    • During the first story, Nagito's Ultimate Lucky Student's Lab was shown to double as the Ultimate Gambler's Lab, with Jin Kirigiri's notes on the Kamukura Project found during the final investigation commenting offhand that Celeste was sharing her Lab with all of the Ultimate Lucky Students during her time at the school. When the Ultimate Labs return during Chapter 1 here, Celeste is shown to be sharing her Lab with Makoto, another Ultimate Lucky Student.
    • When Mukuro confronts Monokuma about curing the Despair Disease, Monokuma suggests getting somebody to kill someone else which would allow her to enter the Class Trial already knowing who the culprit was. This was Peko's original plan for the third trial in Class Swap - Hope's Peak Academy before she was forced to kill Akane herself due to Akane being unable to go through with killing Nekomaru.
    • In response to the above suggestion, Mukuro mentions tricking one of the students into giving another poison, only for Monokuma to explain that the blackened needs to be aware of what they're doing to be qualified as such. This was the reason Sonia was labeled as the second blackened in the first story as she was the one who knowingly poisoned the orange juice that killed Hiyoko even though the latter took it from Kazuichi.
    • Just like in the third trial of the first Class Swap, the culprit votes the protagonist as the blackened during Voting Time out of pure spite.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: During the post-funeral party in Chapter 3, Toko, Kiyotaka, and Makoto all get hammered on sake. Taka is at least implied to have been drowning his sorrows, but Toko only has one shot.
  • The Cassandra: At one point in Chapter 1, Hiro points accusingly at Mukuro, Kyoko, and Sayaka and claims to "know what (they're) planning." Other than Makoto, no one else takes his claims seriously, and Kyoko even goes out of her way to keep him quiet about his predictions.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Briefly discussed by Mukuro with Chihiro in Chapter 5. When the latter laments that they should have a taken a more proactive role in stopping the murders, Mukuro points out that they shouldn't try to take responsibility for the whole group as both Kyoko and Byakuya tried to do the same and both were crushed by it to the point they ended up committing murder and getting executed rather than abandoning it, with Kyoko contemplating suicide before getting infected by the Despair Disease and Byakuya committing a murder-suicide to protect them while living up to his own words.
  • Character Catchphrase: Kyoko often cautions the others not to "do anything stupid".
  • Confess to a Lesser Crime: After falling under suspicion during the second trial, Celeste begins admitting her involvement in several other events on the island, including the vandalization of Taka's cottage and the setting up of the trap to kill Hifumi, to convince the others of her innocence in Hifumi's murder.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Yasuhiro, a survivor in canon, is the first victim here.
    • Sakura is executed as the first culprit here rather than being the victim and culprit of Chapter 4.
    • Monokuma states at the end of Chapter 1 that Sakura's boyfriend, Kenichirō, died during the two years she had been attending Hope's Peak Academy, whereas in canon he lived past the events of Trigger Happy Havoc and ended up on the Warriors of Hope's Hit List in Towa City.
    • Hifumi is the victim of Chapter 2, one chapter earlier than in canon.
    • Takaaki Ishimaru, Taka's father, originally lived past the original killing game and ended up on the Warriors of Hope's Hit List in Towa City. Here, he was murdered by Genocider Syo during the missing two years in order to prevent him from exposing her as Toko's split personality.
    • Toko, a survivor in canon, is one of the victims of Chapter 3. Except it's not Toko, but Genocider Syo.
    • Kyoko, a survivor in canon, is executed as the culprit of Chapter 3.
    • Aoi, a survivor in canon, dies in Chapter 4 as a casualty of the motive rather than as a victim or blackened.
    • Byakuya, a survivor in canon, is executed as the culprit of Chapter 4.
  • Death of the Hypotenuse: In the aftermath of the second trial, Monokuma insinuates that Mukuro should be glad Sayaka is dead, since that means one less romantic rival for Makoto's affections.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • In addition to dying solely as a culprit, Sakura is Squashed Flat rather then poisoning herself.
    • Hifumi is crushed by a chandelier rather than bludgeoned by a hammer.
    • In addition to being executed as a culprit rather than dying as a victim, Sayaka is trampled to death by a crowd of Monokumas instead of being stabbed in the midsection.
    • In addition to dying as a victim rather an a culprit, Mondo is stabbed by several pairs of scissors rather being melted into butter.
    • Unlike her execution in the Bad Ending of Trigger Happy Havoc, Kyoko has her neck snapped instead of being crushed by a compactor.
    • In addition to dying as a victim rather then a culprit, Celeste is shot dead and beheaded instead of getting hit with a truck.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: After being found guilty in the second trial, Sayaka attempts to fend off her impending execution by taking Hina hostage with a knife.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After spending years having her life ruined by her Serial Killer Split Personality, Toko, once Kyoko locks her and Genocider Syo in the Music Venue's basement, decides to strangle Syo with a noose, knowing that she can get away with it due to only Kyoko's murder of Mondo counting for the upcoming Class Trial.
    Syo: (choking) Whaat...are...you doing...hrghhrh...
Toko: I'm e-ending! The reign of terror! Of Genocider Syo!
  • Driven to Suicide:
    • Mukuro considers threatening Kyoko into committing suicide in order to put an end to the Despair Disease, but the thought of what Junko would think if she instigated a murder causes her to decide not to go through with it.
    • Ironically, after getting exposed as the culprit during the third trial, Kyoko mentions that she had been tempted to kill herself in order to put an end to the motive at one point before getting infected with the Despair Disease herself and deciding to kill Mondo instead.
  • Electric Torture: Kyoko's execution, "Shocking Twist", has her strapped to an electric chair as Monokuma shocks her with increasingly higher jolts of electricity. Right before he can administer the final voltage to her however, Usami decides to just put Kyoko out of her misery by pressing an emergency button, stopping the charge and instead causing the electric chair helmet on Kyoko's head to twist ninety degrees, snapping her neck.
  • Enemy Without: Thanks to the Neo World Program, Monokuma has somehow managed to split off Toko's "Genocider Syo" personality from her and form her into her own person.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Byakuya is a borderline sociopath, but even he's put off by the Despair Disease. To him, the previous motives were challenges to be overcome, while the Despair Disease is a just plain barbaric death threat.
  • Executive Meddling: Mentioned In-Universe by Hifumi, who claims that the Magical Girls Unite! videogame series was ruined by its spin-offs and Sequel Series, which he calls "corporate trash."
  • Failed a Spot Check: When taking over the school trip and converting it into a Killing Game, Monokuma forgot to add the rule prohibiting violence against the headmaster from the previous story and the canon games, allowing Mukuro to get away with grabbing Monokuma by the neck while interrogating him about the Despair Disease.
  • Foil: The culprit of Chapter 2 here can be considered one to the culprit of Chapter 2 of Class Swap - Hope's Peak Academy. Whereas Sonia deliberately set out to kill someone, only for her attempt to end up killing the wrong target, Sayaka had no intention of murdering anyone only to end up accidentally killing Hifumi trying to stop him from killing what would also have been the wrong target. Whereas Sonia gracefully accepted her guilt and execution once she was exposed with most of the protests of her innocence coming from Kazuichi, Sayaka fights up until the very end to save her life, even going so far as to take Hina hostage with a knife after the trial in order to prevent Monokuma from executing her.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • When Makoto and Mukuro are looking at the Hotel Mirai's cottage placement in the Prologue, Makoto notes that Chihiro's cottage is on the boys' side of the hotel rather than the girls'.
    • Toko faints after seeing Yasuhiro's dead body in Chapter 1, but there are no signs of her having turned into Genocider Syo. This is because the Neo World Program somehow managed to separate Syo from Toko.
    • One of the prizes for winning the Magical Girls Unite! arcade game provided as the second motive is a letter sent to Jin Kirigiri by Koichi Kizakura in which the latter refers to Mukuro spending time in the Middle East.
    • During the remembrance ceremony in Chapter 3, a drunken Toko threatens to kill Genocider Syo and even attempts to attack her only to faint at the sight of blood despite being inebriated. Not only does Toko made good on her threat later in the chapter, her hemophobia allows the other students to confirm her true identity despite having been infected by the Despair Disease.
    • When Mukuro interrogates Monokuma about the Despair Disease, he informs her that those who died from the motive will count as a "natural death" and that while there won't be any trial or execution, it won't end the motive. This is exactly what happens in the next chapter with Aoi's death.
  • Friendly Pirate: Discussed after the fourth execution is made pirate-themed. Usami complains that pirates should be "cool guys, sailing around, enjoying freedom", not murderous brutes.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Leon uses his student perk to skip over the first trial, thinking it will allow him to be spared if the others manage to screw it up. However, Monokuma informs him that even if he doesn't attend the trial, he'll still be subject to the same fate as the other students, especially if they still manage to find him guilty.
  • Got Volunteered: Kyoko is voluntold to take command of the survivors. She reluctantly goes with it, and later proves to be a rather level-headed leader... at least until she gets infected with the Despair Disease...
  • Groin Attack: Sayaka is revealed to have kicked Hifumi in the crotch in an attempt to make him get away from her after finding out that he was setting up a murder plan, as she thought he was trying to kill her to silence her.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Yasuhiro's 30% success rate with his predictions sounds unreliable on paper, but Kyoko points out that's startlingly good for questions like "what will happen to me tomorrow?" Of the ten most recent predictions he recorded in his journal, two of them come true over the course of the game, another two have call-forwards to plot developments later in the canon game, and three have been directly disproven (barring some sort of Prophecy Twist).
  • He Knows Too Much:
    • At the crux of the second killing. After Sayaka discovered Hifumi's plot to kill Syo, Hifumi attacked her to keep her quiet and was himself killed in the ensuing altercation. However, Sayaka later realizes that he probably wasn't trying to kill her, just keep her quiet for a little while.
    • Toko's hidden route in Magical Girls Unite! reveals that Genocider Syo killed Taka's father because he was going to expose her as Toko's Serial Killer split personality. He was murdered in the same way all of Genocider Syo's previous victims were.
  • Hero Insurance: When the group reaches the hospital, they discover that causing the death of a patient through insufficient medical skills is not in and of itself grounds to be declared blackened.
  • Hyde Plays Jekyll: Inverted. After Kyoko infects her with the Despair Disease as part of her plan to frame Genocider Syo for Mondo's murder, Toko begins acting like the now-deceased Syo.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Genocider Syo ditches her glasses so that people can tell the difference between her and Toko.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Makoto is still framed for the first murder although it's indirect here.
    • Chihiro's gender is still revealed to the other students in Chapter 2, although this time it's Chihiro himself who reveals it.
    • Kiyotaka's new best friend is still among the casualties of the second case.
    • Mukuro and Junko were still the "Despair Sisters" at one point, although they regard it as an embarrassing phase.
    • The third chapter still has a memorial service for the deceased up to this point.
    • Byakuya still agrees to cooperate with the group after the game becomes unfair, in his mind.
    • Mukuro still attacks Monokuma and crushes him under her boot (although she isn't executed for it this time).
    • One of the victims of the third trial is still found hanging from a noose in the Music Venue.
    • A crime scene is still made up to make it look like Genocider Syo committed the murder, although this time instead of being done by a third party to "make the case more interesting," it's done by the killer explicity to frame Syo.
    • Despite not being related to the case, the murders in Chapter 3 still appear to be imitating the deaths in The Wizard of Monomi (The Wizard of Usami in this story). Genocider Syo is found hanged like the Usami Scarecrow who hanged herself, and Mondo is pinned to a wall with sharp scissors like the Usami Lion was pinned to a tree with sharp knifes.
    • Byakuya still prepares a duralumin case full of supplies in preparation for a trap (although this time it's the real Byakuya and he never gets a chance to use it).
    • The Ultimate Lucky Student is still the one to discover the secret of the Final Room and keeps it to himself, although this time Makoto plays Russian Roulette with five bullets by accident and is sworn to secrecy by Monokuma rather than deliberately being obstinate like Nagito was.
    • The Chapter 4 killing is still a mutual duel to the death.
  • Internal Reveal: Chapter 4 ends with Makoto revealing Mukuro's Ultimate Talent.
  • It's All My Fault: After the second trial, Kyoko blames herself for her failure in leadership causing Hifumi's death.
  • Kick the Dog: Kyoko insults Hina right before her execution, calling her "stupid and emotional enough to sabotage [her] own case beyond salvaging" and that she's "surprised [she] even made it so far."
  • Literal Split Personality: Genocider Syo has split off from Toko to become her own being, complete with her own body.
  • Knockout Gas: To keep the mystery of the Funhouse interesting, both towers are gassed with it every time the elevator moves.
  • Manslaughter Provocation: The truth behind the second killing. Sayaka stumbled upon Hifumi setting up a trap to kill Genocider Syo, and when she declared her intention to tattle, he attacked her. In the ensuing fight, Sayaka broke the chandelier and knocked Hifumi under it, killing him.
  • Master of Unlocking: Sakura's perk allows her to unlock any door that has been locked by another student. It's this power that implicates her in Yasuhiro's murder, since only she could have gotten into his cottage despite his paranoia.
  • Mercy Kill: At the end of Kyoko's execution, Usami hits a button that instantly snaps her neck to spare her from more of Monokuma's Electric Torture.
  • Misplaced Retribution: After the second trial, Kiyotaka lashes out at both Celeste and Genocider Syo for Hifumi's death. While neither are exactly free of guilt (Celeste tried to kill Hifumi herself, while Syo is a Serial Killer who was the true target of Hifumi's plot, as she had murdered Kiyotaka's father), Celeste rightfully points out that their actions had no effect on the actual commission of Hifumi's death.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Kyoko calls Mukuro the 16th student when meeting her for the first time.
    • Hiro tells Leon at one point that someone's going to try and kill him, likely a reference to Sayaka attempting to kill Leon in Chapter 1 of the canon Trigger Happy Havoc.
    • Hiro is the first victim here, just like he was the first victim in the original Trigger Happy Havoc and V3 demos.
    • 11037 once again proves to be an important clue in the first trial except instead of being a Dying Message by Sayaka to implicate Leon, it actually refers to one of the prophecies in Hiro's Twelve Thousand Prophecies of Supernova book he was working on, which specifically refers to Sakura.
    • Junko has created an alias for herself to have a social life outside of her fashionista career whom she refers to as "Ryoko Otonashi".
    • The Chapter 2 videogame created by Usami that replaces Twilight Syndrome: Murder Case, Magical Girls Unite!, still has a hidden motive put by Monokuma targeted at someone specifically,. In this case, it was made so that Taka would try to murder Genocider Syo for killing his father, just like how in SDR2 it was made so that Fuyuhiko would try to murder Mahiru for covering up his sister's murder.
    • The second culprit's execution takes cues from both their unused execution in Danganronpa (Sayaka is brought to a stage, ostensibly to perform, and there is a score meter) and the second culprit of Danganronpa V3's execution (the killer is offered the false hope of escape, only to be killed anyway).
    • Just like in the Bad Ending to Trigger Happy Havoc, Kyoko is defeated by Makoto exposing a lie she told during the third trial.
    • Like in the previous fic and all three of the canon games, the culprit of Chapter 3 is the most cold-blooded and unrepentant of the bunch.
    • The state the body of Chapter 4's victim is found in; In the original game, before her execution, Celeste says that she would like to be reincarnated as Marie-Antoinette, even though she was executed by decapitation. Guess what's missing from the scene of the crime when the other students stumble upon a dead Celeste?
    • When the culprit of Chapter 4 is revealed, Toko tries to defend him by claiming that he tampered with the crime scene after the fact in order to smoke out potential threats. Byakuya retorts that not only would that be pointless since he's not participating in the Killing Game anymore, but if he was going to do that, he should have done that earlier.
    • Mukuro's perk which allows her to kill more than two people and leave the killing game if there are only two students remaining, including herself, is similar to the rules of the Killing School Semester.
  • Neck Lift: Mukuro does this to Monokuma while interrogating him about the Despair Disease.
  • Neck Snap: The third culprit's execution is ended with a broken neck.
  • Never My Fault: The Monokuma Theater segment following Hina's death has him ticked off that she died without there being a trial, calling it Usami's fault that the students are so closely bonded that they didn't start killing each other before one of them succumbed to his motive.
  • Not His Sled:
    • 11037 doesn't refer to Leon this time. Foreshadowing this, Leon himself is the one who speculates that the numbers might be English letters, only for his theory to be dismissed by Kyoko.
    • At the start of Part 2 of Chapter 2's Daily Life, Mukuro is heading over to the hotel restaurant for breakfast when she walks in on Taka and Mondo having their same argument from the start of Chapter 2 of the canon Trigger Happy Havoc. However, just before the two of them agree to have the endurance contest that would have resulted in the restoration of their friendship in canon, Leon walks in and tells Mondo to just ignore Taka's postulating resulting in the two of them ditching Taka and hanging out instead.
  • "Not So Different" Remark:
    • While most of the rest of the class are unable to respond to Sayaka's Armor-Piercing Question regarding how any of them would have covered up their own crimes out of fear for their lives just like she did, Celeste states that she's able to understand Sayaka since she set up her trap to kill Hifumi out of a similar fear for her own life.
    • Celeste states this about herself and Byakuya during their Russian Roulette duel in the Funhouse. Both of them choose to do the Final Room challenge since both of them have realized that only a death could lead to an escape but refuse to just let themselves die due to their shared survivor mentality. She also adds that despite this, they have both grown attached to the other students. Byakuya doesn't acknowledge it, but it's clear from his class trial that he cares more about his classmates than he would ever admit.
  • Obvious Rule Patch: When Monokuma traps the group in the Funhouse, he makes sure to disable Aoi's perk so she can't use it to prevent them from starving to death.
  • Off with His Head!: Celeste's body is found with her head decapitated.
  • Old-School Chivalry: Mondo believes it's his duty as a man to protect women. When he threatens to beat up Monokuma's and Usami's traitors, he's left at a loss when it's pointed out said traitors could be women.
  • Power Nullifier: Hifumi's perk, Canon Non-Compliant, allows him to nullify one other student's perk. It was targeted at Genocider Syo at the time of his death.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Byakuya starts to give one to Mukuro and Mondo about his superiority over them and the other students in Chapter 3, but by the end, Mondo's turned it around back at him:
Byakuya: Well, I must applaud you. You, a professional with years of experience have beaten an amateur who was on his first race ever by a sliver of a hair. Truly a victory worth celebrating.
Mondo: What?! You piece of shit! You're still smug?!
Byakuya: Why wouldn't I be? It's obvious I'm superior in every way. Repeat this race and I would win. And my true talent is leadership. Which, I believe is part of yours too? How pedestrian. A biker gang...
Mondo: What the fuck do you know about leading? Have you ever rode at the helm?!
Byakuya: Please. Leadership isn't about being the strongest. It's about making everyone respect you. And there are many ways to achieve that, but just brutishness will earn one no respect. Only behind the back ridicule.
Mukuro: ...like you with your insults?
      Mondo: Yeah, you heard that?
Byakuya: Nice try. Just because I don't care about you lot, doesn't mean I couldn't do a way better job if I were in charge. There'd be no murders happening at all if I decided to be in control.
Mukuro: Nobody would want to follow someone who acts like they're superior all the time.
Byakuya: You still don't get it, do you? People want to follow those that are superior. That is the nature of commoners. Why do you think Kyoko was the one chosen? She presented the bare minimum qualifications, along with family history and that's all it took for everyone's approval. I have same, along with years of experience leading some of the leading companies in their fields.
      Mukuro: That's different!
Byakuya: How is it? If I wished to, with some minimal show of tolerance to the idiocy around me, I could quickly earn the respect I deserve. I just don't see the need to.
Mondo: You bitch... Then tell me this. Do you really think you could lead my boys better than me?
Byakuya: A scarecrow mounted on a motorcycle instead of a seat could do it better. I know how to organize, how to plan, how to consider possibilities. I have skills to motivate and demotivate people, and resources that allow me to do whatever I wish in the world. You only have a fast motorcycle and biceps larger than your brain.
      Mondo: Grhh... gh... Ghahahaha!
      Byakuya: What?
Mondo: Fucking... I should have realized... You're so damn pathetic... How the fuck did I not see this earlier?
      Byakuya: Pathetic?!
Mondo: You really don't know what the real world is like, do you? I thought Taka was a sheltered fuckin' dude, but at least the shit he yells comes from someone who knows what it's like to fight for it! I may not like his schtick, but he is a real man! But you? Hah!
Byakuya: Do you dare imply I don't know what it's like to fight?! I have fought on a level you cannot comprehend to earn my position! And don't even think about implying otherwise?
Mondo: Can't even comprehend? Yeah, that sounds right. You stinking rich assholes probably think that the real world is that fucking fantasy you built up? News flash, asshole! It's the world we, the real fucking people, with real fucking lives live in that's real. We fight to live! To be free! And that's why you can't understand the simplest fuckin' thing! And here I thought you really thought you were better than me!
Byakuya: This is nonsensical. Of course I am—
Mondo: Man, even punching you seems kinda excessive now. You spout all that crap about skills and motivation and resources... Nobody gives a shit! Not a single boy from my gang would follow someone like you, because you just don't get us!
Byakuya: What's there to get about a bunch of freaks obsessed with riding motorcycles?
Mondo: Hah! Exactly! Man... Taka fuckin' infuriates me, because the shit he says is actually something that makes sense! But you... I can't even take you seriously, like god fucking damn. The only thing my boys and I care about is the true freedom that riding gives! High speed, roar of your hog, wind in your hair and nothing to stop you! The only people they respect are the ones who ride better and are strong enough to fight for freedom they get while riding.
      Byakuya: I fought—
Mondo: So did I! I fucking fought to be where I am! And guess what?! I won. I sacrificed more than I ever wanted, but I won, and that's where I am now, with pretty much every biker dude in the country dreaming to be part of the Crazy Diamonds vanguard. While you what, did math or whatever it is you stock broker types do?
Byakuya: I'm done here. This was a waste of time. You wouldn't understand the kind of fighting I myself had to go through.
Mondo: Hah! Finally. Losers don't belong here.
    • Byakuya gives a much better one to Toko at the conclusion of the fourth trial.
Byakuya: [Y]ou disgust me. And not just your appearance, or your smell or even your manner of speaking about me. It’s who you are that disgusts me.
      Toko: M-Master—
Byakuya: Do not call me that. I have countless servants and every single one of them is thousand times more dignified than you have ever been. You don’t deserve to call me that. You claim that there is some love in you, and you so desperately cling to notion that I could ever love you back. That is impossible. Nobody will ever love a creature who is so vile and disgusting, it’s incapable of showing affection even to itself, much less those around her.
      Toko: M—Byakuya... B-But...
Byakuya: Your foolish dreams of true love are garbage, nonsense. I lived through the real world and I learned the harsh truth. Only the human can shape their own life, with their own effort. And you are the absolute opposite of that. You let your very dignity rot, your self-respect degrade, while hoping life will hand you the love of your life. That is why you, the way you are, will forever disgust me. You can take those words to heart and improve your life, or you can embrace being a repulsive creature you see yourself as and be forgotten by everyone. I couldn’t care which you do anymore.
  • The Reveal: Chapter 4 ends with the reveal of Mukuro's perk.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Right before the first trial, Leon activates his student perk which allows him to not have to attend a Class Trial if he so chooses.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: One of Hiro's final prophecies before his death had him predict that "the Ogre will fail the test of will in one of the motives." When Sakura encounters him while heading back to the store, he accuses her of giving in to the motive and attacks her with a sword, only to be easily disarmed by her. Unfortunately, his words end up causing Sakura to realize it is her chance to find out about her lost memories, resulting in her deciding to finish the job and kill Hiro with his own sword.
  • Ship Tease: Mukuro gets plenty of this with both Makoto and Mondo. In Chapter 1 Junko points out how both Sayaka and Kyoko seem to have a thing for Makoto in an attempt to make Mukuro jealous, and in Chapter 3, Monokuma even tells her that she should be glad that Sayaka is dead because it means there's one less romantic rival for Makoto's feelings. In Chapter 2 Taka implies that Mondo may have a crush on Mukuro and they both race on bikes in Chapter 3.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Aside from the Research Labs and the Scrum Debate and Argument Armament mechanics from Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony appearing in this story as well, Mukuro also has to lie at some points during the trials in order to progress with the debate.
    • Junko's creation of her "Ryoko Otonashi" alias to try to live an ordinary life outside of fashion and the paparazzi seems to be a reverse version of Hannah Montana.
    • Kyoko's student perk, which allows her to alter any Monokuma file she wishes to, is called "Autopsy Report".
  • Shrinking Violet: When Mondo catches the Despair Disease, he becomes a total wallflower.
  • Skewed Priorities: Why didn't Usami hand out the information booklets on the Despair Disease? Because they called the students losers and she didn't want them to be offended. Needless to say, Mukuro is pissed when she learns this.
  • Smug Snake: Byakuya, as usual. He tries to take on Mondo, the Ultimate Biker Gang leader, in a motorcycle race; after it ends in Mondo's rather predictable victory, he still maintains his haughty and arrogant demeanor.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • In the second murder case, Leon keeping Sayaka's beach party invitation is what ultimately proves that Sayaka had forged a note and passed it as Hifumi's due to both the invitation and the note having the same handwriting. In addition had Sayaka not accidentally caused Hifumi's death herself, Celeste's plan for killing Hifumi would have been succesful.
    • The third killing went awry when Toko and Syo found the body, forcing Kyoko to switch to using Syo as her fall guy instead of her intended target Aoi.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Everyone as a whole... sort of. The Jabberwock Island killing game takes place inside the Neo World Program, and the students whose avatars experience death have their bodies rendered comatose in the real world. It may be averted in the case of Genocider Syo however, as she and Toko share a body in the real world.
    • While it's currently in the air whether they will be downplayed or straight examples, Mukuro Ikusaba (killed by rule break in the first chapter), Leon Kuwata (the first culprit), Chihiro Fujisaki (the second victim), and Kiyotaka Ishimaru (the third victim), are all alive as of the end of Chapter 4.
    • Zigzagged with Sayaka, who is executed as the culprit of the second case, instead of dying as the victim of the first.
    • Zigzagged with Mondo, who is the first victim of the third case, being the third victim overall, instead of the culprit of the second.
    • Zigzagged with Celeste, who is the victim of Chapter 4 instead of the culprit of Chapter 3.
  • Squashed Flat: Sakura's execution has her being forced to hold up a platform as Monokuma and Usami alternate placing heavy and light objects respectively onto it, with a single feather being placed on it by Usami ultimately being what causes her to succumb to the pressure.
  • Stress Vomit: After the second culprit is exposed, they admit that their immediate reaction after committing the crime was to puke in shock.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Due to neither Monokuma nor Usami being able to overpower the other, the two compromise to alternate who's running the class trip each day. Neither one is happy about this, as the Monokuma and Usami Theatre segments at the end of Chapter 1's first two Daily Life segments show.
  • Thrill Seeker: Even if she's not the Ultimate Despair in this timeline, Junko is still a chronically bored adrenaline junkie.
  • Twin Switch: After Toko kills Syo, Kyoko kisses Toko on the lips, infecting Toko with the Despair Disease and causing her to act like Genocider Syo.
  • Valley Girl: When Junko catches the Despair Disease, she becomes a vapid bimbo.
  • Villainous Breakdown: The second culprit goes completely bananas after being voted guilty. Sayaka actually resorts to holding Hina at knifepoint in order to prevent her own execution, and has to be physically subdued by Kyoko.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Chapter 1 Daily Life, Part 4. At the party, everything is going well until the first victim appears. Namely, canon survivor Hiro...with Makoto holding the murder weapon.
    • Chapter 3 Class Trial, Part 2. Mukuro exposes Kyoko as the culprit behind Mondo's murder by proving that the "Genocider Syo" currently with them at the Class Trial is actually a Despair Disease-ridden Toko. After being voted guilty, Kyoko reveals before her execution that the strain of the Despair Disease she was infected with actually managed to restore her lost memories and drops hints to the remaining survivors about the truth behind their situation, such as the fact that Usami was the one responsible for their missing memories and her status as a member of World Ender/the Future Foundation as well as the fact that one of their classmates should be dead.
  • Wham Line: In-Universe, the culprit of Chapter 3 asks a question to a certain member of their class right before their execution even though they know they won't answer:
Kyoko: Just how are you alive...?
  • Wham Shot: At the end of Chapter 1, the surviving students make their way back to the surface following the trial, only to be greated with a lookalike of Toko's calling herself "Genocider Syo".
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: Celeste's perk, Gambler's Luck, allows her to get whatever she wants from chance-based outcomes on the island.
  • You Are in Command Now: After Kyoko's execution, Byakuya assumes command of the remaining survivors.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: When the remaining survivors meet back up with Leon following the first trial, he congratulates them for solving Hiro's murder only to get called out by the others for using his perk to get out of the trial. He only feels worse about it when Togami complements it as a logical attempt to protect himself.
  • You Killed My Father: One of the two hidden routes Monokuma had put in Magical Girls Unite!, the game created by Usami and which replaces Twilight Syndrome: Murder Case, reveals that Genocider Syo had killed Kiyotaka's father during the two years the members of Class 77-B had been attending Hope's Peak Academy because he was going to expose her as Toko's Serial Killer Split Personality. The motive was set especifically so that Kiyotaka would try to kill Syo.
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: Upon being questioned by Kyoko and Celeste before her execution upon why she resisted Mukuro's interrogation of her, Sakura indicates it was so that she would die with Hina hating her as a traitor rather than mourning her as a friend.
