Fanfic / Danganronpa Class Switch

Go To

Danganronpa Class Switch is a fanfic series written by JessetheImmortal. The premise of the fic is that of switching around the classes of the main Danganronpa games to different settings, as you could probably guess from the title.

Part 1 follows Rantaro Amami, Ultimate ??? of Hope's Peak Academy's 78th Class, as he and his fellow classmates are trapped within the walls of the academy as they are forced into a killing game by a certain monochrome bear we all know and Love to Hate, in order to escape. In addition to attempting to escape Rantaro and company must also reach the bottom of the circumstances that lead them to their current predicament, as well as the murders of each other that occur throughout their school life.

Part 2 follows Leon Kuwata, Ultimate Baseball Star of Hope's Peak Academy's 77th Class, where he and his classmates are told they are on a school trip, hosted by a kind rabbit named Monomi, before Monokuma shuts down the trip and starts hosting yet another Killing Game.

A remake of the first story began on October 4th, 2022 due to the author regretting some of the writing choices and style they used in the first story.

Not to be confused with Danganronpa Class Swap, the inspiration for this fic, which follows the same premise, but with different characters.

Unmarked Spoilers for all entries in the main series

This series contains examples of the following tropes:

     Part 1 - Hope's Peak Academy

Tropes pertaining to both versions

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Here, everyone's talents are natural and not fake.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • In canon, Rantaro and Korekiyo barely exchange any dialogue. Here, they're childhood friends, with the latter even trying to help the former find his sisters.
  • Ascended Extra: Rantaro, the original first victim of his game, is the protagonist of the fic.
  • Childhood Friends: Rantaro and Korekiyo are this in the fic.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Happened in both:
      • Unlike her canon counterpart who was executed as the culprit of the second trial. Kirumi is the first victim of the killing game here.
      • Korekiyo is executed as the culprit of the first trial, two chapters earlier than in canon.
    • Happened in the original:
      • Rather than being executed in the final chapter, Tsumugi (while posing as Kaito) is the victim of the second chapter.
      • Angie is the second culprit rather than the third victim.
      • Himiko, a survivor in canon, is one of the victims of the 3rd case.
      • Zigzagged by Kiibo, While he does technically end up dying earlier than canon, being murdered in the 3rd chapter instead of dying at the end of the 6th trial, he ends having his AI uploaded from his body to a laptop, albeit without memories, from there he ends up escaping alongside the other surviving students.
      • Kokichi is the culprit of the third case, when in canon, he was the victim of the fifth.
      • Maki, a survivor in canon, is executed as the blackened of the 4th Trial.
      • Shuichi, who survived the killing game in canon, ends up murdered as the 5th victim. Subverted when it turns out he faked it.
  • Recycled In Space: Danganronpa Class Swap WITH CHARACTERS FROM V3!
  • Role Swap AU: The premise of the fic is switching the setting of the main cast in V3 to Hope's Peak Academy.
  • You Wake Up in a Room: How the fic opens, with it happening in a normal classroom in the original and the nurse's office in the remake.

Tropes pertaining to the original

  • Accidental Pervert: During the party in Chapter 3, when Rantaro and Miu flip a coin over whether or not there will be any more murders, it ends up landing in Miu's shirt, and when Rantaro goes to grab it, Kokichi shoves his head into her cleavage.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Rantaro actually wheezes at Ryoma's joke.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection: In chapter 5, Miu is revealed to be the creator of Monomi.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change:
    • It's never stated how Korekiyo got into anthropology. Here's it's revealed that he got into it when he went traveling with Rantaro to find the latter's sisters.
    • Rather than being Raised by Wolves, Gonta was born into a financially struggling family, with a dad who's dying from an illness.
    • Downplayed by Miu, while she still got her knowledge as an inventor through brain surgery, the accident that mandated it was a earthquake instead of a car crash.
    • Rather than being recruited by an assassin organization, Maki was instead taken in and trained by an assassin who murdered her (abusive) mother, who also ran a nursery school that she worked at. In addition to this, she ends up losing someone she cares about, but it's her lover instead of her childhood friend.
  • Adaptational Gender Identity: Tsumugi is nonbinary in this story.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Downplayed with Miu, while she does still try to murder Kokichi like in canon, she once again fails, in addition, due to it being the first attempt to kill in the game, she was going through with it without the knowledge that getting away with the crime, would mean that the other students would have all been killed. Once she does learn this fact, she never attempts murder again.
    • Kirumi ends up with this status due to dying as a victim instead of a culprit. Meaning that she never commits a murder.
    • Korekiyo has a more noble reason for his murder compared to V3. In canon he was a serial killer who murdered girls to give his sister friends in the afterlife and is implied to have had an incestuous relationship with her, here these aspects are never implied in the case of the former and directly debunked in the case of the latter. His murder of Kirumi was only done so that he could care for his sister who had fallen ill, and once he's identified as the culprit, he accepts his defeat and wishes the students luck in escaping the school.
    • Subverted by Kaito, while he does initially appear to downplay this by dying as a victim instead of a culprit with a noble motivation. It's revealed that he's in actuality the mastermind of the killing game.
    • Downplayed by Kaede and Gonta. While they did commit murder in canon (or tried to in Kaede's case), both of them had sympathetic reasons for doing so. Here, neither of them attempts to kill someone.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Kokichi's worse here than in canon. Yes, you heard that right.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • In game, Tenko and Angie are at odds with each other for the most part, mostly over Himiko. Here, they develop a close friendship similar to Taka and Mondo to the point where Tenko tries to take the blame for Angie's murder.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Downplayed by Angie, while she ends up murdering Kaito and framing Gonta for the crime, going further than she ever did in canon. She ultimately only does it out of fear that her island's secret being leaked to the public will result in her family being banished, which would leave her and her children without a roof to live under.
    • This is zigzagged by Kokichi. While he ends up giving in to Monokuma's 10 billion yen motive and blackmails Maki into helping him with the murder by disposing of the cameras and murdering Kiibo. He ultimately uses some of his last moments to give Rantaro information that would lead him to incidentally discovering the identity of the traitor.
      • This applies to DICE as well. In canon, they were little more than a group of people who do harmless pranks. Here they're described as a wannabe criminal syndicate, partaking in crimes such as arson and burglary.
    • In canon, Maki trying to kill Kokichi was only because she thought that he was the mastermind, and he had also kidnapped Kaito, on top of it ultimately being unsuccessful. Here, not only does she aid on Kokichi's plan to kill Himiko for the 10 billion yen motive by getting rid of Miu's cameras and murdering Kiibo, but she's also revealed to have be The Mole at the end of chapter 3. Followed by kidnapping and blackmailing Rantaro to keep quiet about the fact that he knows about her status, and killing Ryoma in the following chapter.
    • Shuichi of all people is revealed to have been killed in the process of committing a murder, something his canon counterpart never did. Subverted when it's revealed that it was a ploy the entire time.
    • The final class trial reveals that the Mastermind of the Killing Game and Ultimate Despair is Kaito, with the one who was killed by Angie in Chapter 2 actually being his accomplice, Tsumugi.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: Due to Rantaro being missing, the final part of Chapter 5's Daily Life as well as its Deadly Life and the first half of the class trial is from Kaede's POV. She even engages in a rebuttal showdown against him.
  • Anger Born of Worry: After Shuichi's Faking the Dead ploy is revealed, everyone is pissed at him for scaring them like that.
  • Anti-Villain: Korekiyo and Angie, Korekiyo only killed their Kirumi so that he could take care of his sister while also being hesitant to commit the murder. Angie only went through with murdering Kaito to prevent her island's secret being leaked, which would likely lead to her death, after she found out that he was working with the mastermind.
  • Apocalypse Anarchy: Invoked and Lampshaded by Rantaro. When the surviving students are discussing how they're going to survive in the outside world, he answers by bringing up the countless different shops and buildings that are going to be open for raiding.
  • Asshole Victim:
    • spoiler: None of the culprits are able to fully escape this status. Albeit certain factors make most of them Down Played examples of this.
      • Korekiyo has a more sympathetic motive compared to canon, of wanting to care for his sick older sister and find out what happened to her in the motive video he was given, however he still ended up murdering an innocent person and was prepared to let the class die for his and her sake.
      • Angie valued the friendships she made with Himiko and Tenko, but she still killed Kaito to cover up her island's secret of performing Human Sacrifice rituals, however she was doing it out of fear that she would have been killed if said secret was unveiled. It's downplayed further with the revelation that her target was actually Tsumugi, the mastermind's accomplice.
      • Kokichi was a massive Jerkass to the rest of the class, and masterminded the deaths of 2 different people for the cash reward Monokuma promised, in addition to founding a criminal organization, with his dad and homeless background doing little to excuse it. Albeit, it's downplayed with his attempt to assist the students before he's executed.
      • In spite of having an even darker upbringing than Kokichi. Maki is debatably even less cooperative with the other students in Chapter 4 than he is across his entire run in the killing game. See Adaptational Villainy for details.
    • Shuichi is revealed to have been killed in the process of having his own murder plan backfire, and his killer turn the tables on him. Subverted when it turns out that not only was he trying to target the mastermind, but he's also not really dead.
    • Kaito is the Mastermind, so he should go without saying.
  • Bait-and-Switch: One might think that Kokichi would once again fulfill his role as the main antagonistic figure, like in canon. Instead, he ends up executed as the third culprit, and the person who fills the role of the rival is Maki.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Rantaro went travelling across the world to search for his younger sisters.
  • Butch Lesbian: Tenko
  • Clothing Damage: The above Accidental Pervert scene leads to Maki slashing at the leather straps on Miu's dress to free Rantaro, causing it to fall apart.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Rantaro thinks of Angie this way.
  • Comically Missing the Point: During the final Class Trial, when everyone is discussing the need for irrifutable proof that they lost 2 years worth of memories, Rantaro mentions how he measured Kaede's breasts and they are bigger than her handbook says they are. Shuichi therefore concludes from this, and a few other small factors, that Kaede is pregnant with Rantaro's child. Rantaro quickly says that is not what he was saying at all.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The executions, much like canon.
    • Drill that Pierces the Gates to Hell: Jin Kirigiri is dragged into an oversized drill vehicle as it burrows underground, collapsing several caves in the process until it descends into the earth's core.
    • Despair Tribe Sacrifice Festival: Korekiyo, after being bound up to a pole and stripped, is then repeatedly lashed by a tribe of Monokuma. Then, to finish him off, he's eaten from the inside out by scarabs and has lava poured on his corpse after he's killed.
    • Paint It Red: Angie is placed in front of a large canvas. From there, Monokuma takes control of her body and forces her to paint a picture of him, only instead of paint, she is forced to use her own blood via repeatedly stabbing herself. She is then forced to finish herself off by slashing her throat.
    • The Chess Master: Kokichi is restrained with barbed wire and forced to play a game of chess with Monokuma. Every time Monokuma manages to take one of Kokichi's pieces, a collar shocks him, which causes him even more pain due to the wires. In the end, Kokichi manages to win, only for Monokuma to hand him poisoned food, which is what kills him.
    • Dead Woman Walking: Maki is suspended in an execution chamber as Monokuma prepares to execute her via lethal injection. As Monokuma stabs her with drug injected needles, Maki escapes the chamber, slashing the Monokuma in two. She escapes into a hall full of jail cells and an army prison guard Monokuma, as she fights through all of them. She eventually reaches the roof, where she's met with 2 armed helicopters as the Monokuma army catches up to her, however as she begins to fight them, the drugs injected in her begin to kick in as the Monokumas begin to overpower her, eventually impaling her on her own katana, causing her to fall back down. To finish her off, the helicopters launch missiles at the building, killing her.
    • The Ultimate Punishment: Kaito endures every single one of the previous executions before being disembowled by a horde of Monokuma in Kaede's failed one.
  • Dark Secret: This is the motive for the 2nd Chapter, like in canon. The secrets range from relatively normal (Rantaro accidentally kissing his girlfriend's twin sister after mistaking one for the other, and Kaito faking documents to become an astronaut trainee.) to dangerous (Maki's true talent as the Ultimate Assassin, and Angie being forced to participate in her island's human sacrifice rituals.)
  • Deadpan Snarker: Rantaro has a surprisingly sharp tongue.
  • Deuteragonist: The role of secondary main characters zigzag quite a bit between them. The role of main deuteragonist is split between Shuichi and Kaede. Kaede being Rantaro's main Love Interest and the first person he meets at the start of the game, and Shuichi being Rantaro's main platonic friend and his greatest ally during class trials. At first the role of Tritagonist seemed to be Kokichi, who acts as the main rival character... before he winds up executed as the culprit of the 3rd trial. Currently the role lands on Maki, who's revealed as the traitor and plays an important role during the investigations and trials.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Monokuma is left completely stumped by the 5th murder case.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • Instead of dying via G Forces from being launched into space and back, Jin Kirigiri dies after being driven into the earth's core.
    • In addition to dying as a victim rather than a culprit, Kirumi dies of a Slashed Throat as opposed to falling to her death.
    • Korekiyo's execution now has him beaten and lashed with whips before being eaten alive by scarabs instead of being boiled to death and excorsised.
    • Tsumugi, while posing as Kaito, gets their ribs bashed in rather than being Sqaushed Flat by a rock.
    • Rather than blowing himself up, Kiibo has all of his limbs hacked off and is stabbed through the eye with a knife.
    • In addition to dying as a culprit rather than a victim, Kokichi is poisoned instead of getting Squashed Flat.
    • Ryoma's Eaten Alive instead of drowning.
    • Rather than dying to his illness, Kaito is mauled to death by a horde of Monokumas after going through everyone else's executions.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Maki, she's the closest thing to a main antagonistic force within the fic, and is ultimately revealed to be the traitor. Her death marks the start of the fics endgame, with the unity of the students against Monokuma, and the reveal of Tsumugi within the game.
  • Fake Kill Scare: At the beginning of Chapter 4's final daily life chapter, Rantaro, Kaede and Tenko find Gonta covered in blood and unconscious, with the scene played out as a body discovery. Given that this happens at thevente beginning of the chapter, with a large chunk of it left, it's rather obvious that Gonta is a Red Herring for the actual victim of the chapter, Ryoma.
  • Females Are More Innocent: Inverted Out of the 4 actual murder cases in the fic, the male killers generally had a more sympathetic reasons for being driven to murder than the girls in the group. Korekiyo only murdered Kirumi so that he'd be able to find out what happened to his sickly older sister, and Kokichi, while masterminding 2 deaths (albeit one not entirely sticking), did so in an attempt to get him and his friends in DICE out of poverty. While Angie ended up murdering Kaito to cover up her islands sacrificial rituals and the fact that she was forced to participate in them, while Maki murdered 2 different people (albeit only one completely stuck) in an attempt to prevent her status as the traitor from being revealed to the group.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Rantaro forms one with 3 other characters, Kaede, Kokichi and Maki:
    • Rantaro: Phegmatic, Fairly laid back and savvy in comparison to some of his other classmates.
    • Kaede: Saguine, Generally excitable and friendly towards those surrounding her.
    • Kokichi: Chloeric, Often over expresses himself and has a short temper regarding his cohorts.
    • Maki: Melancholic, Quiet and reclusive, generally not expressing herself outside of annoyance.
  • Gentle Giant: Gonta
  • Groin Attack: During Chapter 3, Rantaro, upon noticing he's sitting directly across from Kokichi, kicks him in the crotch.
  • Hidden Depths: Rantaro describes himself as good at cooking to Kirumi.
  • I Have Your Wife: Like in canon, the first motive Monokuma gives the students in order to provoke a killing is holding their loved ones hostage until a killing occurs. If the words of the students are to go by, the loved ones revealed are: Rantaro's little sisters, Kaito's grandmother, Himiko's mom, Kiibo's creator, Miu's pet pig and as revealed later on, Gonta's family, and Maki's mentor and the children at her nursery.
    • The motive also comes back in Chapter 4, where it's revealed that Maki's motive forced her to choose between her mentor and her students at the nursery school. This leads her to agreeing to become Monokuma's traitor.
    • It returns again in chapter 5, only this time, the dead student's hostages are on the line, since Monokuma has no use for them.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Miu still tries to kill Kokichi and is stopped by Gonta.
    • Shuichi's Love Interest is still among the casualties of the 1st chapter.
    • The protagonist's childhood friend still dies in the 1st chapter.
    • Angie still ends up starting a Student Council that Tenko, Himiko and Kiibo join.
    • Maki's status as the Ultimate Assassin is still revealed during chapter 2.
    • Himiko's magic show is still the backdrop of a murder.
    • While the circumstances are different, Angie still dies from a Slashed Throat.
    • The culprit of the 3rd Trial still has an accomplice.
    • Ryoma's corpse is still eaten by piranhas.
    • The identity of chapter 5's victim is still initially unclear, and Monokuma still doesn't know who the culprit of the case is.
    • Kaede is nearly executed for a crime she didn't commit, which was her canonical fate.
    • Shuichi still survives the Killing Game.
  • Instant Death Bullet: Subverted, the revelation that this isn't how Himiko was killed gives Rantaro the evidence he needs to finger Kokichi as the culprit of the third trial.
  • Jerkass:
    • Kokichi, in spades. He regularly bitches and yells to the other students, generally acting like a spoiled brat more than a teenager, constantly tries to gets reactions out of them, pulls a poor taste joke during the party in chapter 3 and shows no sympathy towards Tenko after Angie is executed.
    • Maki, to a lesser extent, she remains reclusive to a lot of the students and only cooperates with them when it's essential. She then assists Kokichi in his murder plan by sabotaging the cameras and killing Kiibo. And she get's even worse in Chapter 4, when she holds Rantaro hostage and blackmails him, and tries to frame Tenko for Ryoma's murder.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: As much of a douchebag Kokichi is, he's completely within his rights to be livid at Miu for trying to kill him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold:
    • Downplayed with Rantaro, he's normally a flat out nice guy, but he has a somewhat dark sense of humour, if his exchange with Ryoma is anything to go by and he's surprisingly unpleasant if you get on his bad side.
    • Miu plays it straighter. She's first seen harassing K1-B0, but according to him, it's her way of showing him affection. In addition, despite her rude and crass sense of humour, as well as her lack of boundaries, and trying to murder Kokichi. She does legitimately care about the class and does what she can to help them.
    • Downplayed with Kokichi, the vast majority of the time he's a selfish and insensitive jerk who likes to get a rise out of other people, however there are times when he can be friendly.
    • Tenko is rather rude and unforgiving towards men, and is quick to attack people physically. But she shows a more caring side towards the other female students and forms a strong bond with Himiko and Angie later on. She also can act nicely to men, as evidence with Rantaro and Gonta sometimes.
  • Kiddie Kid: Himiko. Kaede shows some traits of this as well.
  • Large Ham: Kaito and Miu are shown to be this. Kokichi has shades of it when angry.
  • Massively Numbered Siblings: Rantaro mentions in his introduction that he's the oldest of 13 siblings.
  • Meet Cute: Lampshaded with Rantaro and Kaede.
  • The Mole: Similarly to canon Trigger Happy Havoc, Monokuma ends up forcing a student, Maki in this story, to work with him and against the other students by blackmailing her with her teacher and guardian, as well as the children at her nursery school.
  • Morton's Fork: During the Chapter 3 investigation, Monokuma explains his "First Come, First Serve" rule when it comes to multiple killings, while adding the caveat that if the first culprit is the second victim, then the blackened then becomes the second killer instead. Kaede then lampshades this trope on how it will affect the upcoming trial:
Kaede: Talk about a sadistic choice... either we let someone who shed an innocent's blood get away unscathed... or we sentence someone to death for trying to do what could be argued as the right thing.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Chapter 1's title 'Harmony in Killing' is a reference to the title of this cast's original game.
    • The protagonist of the story is still punched hard enough to knock them out shortly after Monokuma's reveal of the killing game.
    • The way Rantaro sits in his chair references his official artwork.
    • Miu's attempt to kill Kokichi is still foiled by Gonta.
    • The first murder once again involves someone being attacked by a shot put ball. This time however, the person attacked isn't the victim.
    • Tenko and Angie's sauna duel ends up having the same results as Taka and Mondo's complete with one of them being the culprit of chapter two.
    • One of the students is revealed to have a murderous past in Chapter 2.
    • Kaede's dress during Chapter 3's party is the same one she wears in her Argument Armament sprite.
    • A Consumate Liar, once again, is executed as the culprit of the 3rd trial.
    • The traitor dies in Chapter Four.
    • Tenko's Important Haircut brings to mind the scrapped one that Kyoko was supposed to get.
  • Nice Guy: Rantaro describes several characters as this. Namely Kaede, Shuichi, K1-B0, Kaito and Kirumi.
  • Orwellian Retcon: After the completion of the first trial. The author went back and revised the post trial. Particularly pertaining to Shuichi's reaction towards Kirumi's killer. Going from barely having a word of dialogue towards them to Going ''completely berserk'' at Korekiyo for murdering her, having to be physically restrained by the others to prevent him form beating him to death. This was done as a response to some people's criticism of it.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: After catching Kokichi and Angie peeking on them during their bathhouse session, Rantaro, Kaito, Shuichi and (possibly) Gonta beat the two of them to a pulp and have them tied up with towels as retribution.
  • Precision F-Strike: Kaede lets out a big one after stumbling across the fifth murder scene.
  • The Quiet One: After his exchange with Maki, all Rantaro got out of her was her name and talent. Contrasting Kaito.
  • The Rival: Kokichi fills this role like in canon, Although it's somewhat subverted as he doesn't have as much agency within the trials, and ends up killed at the half way point. In contrast, Maki acts significantly closer to this role to Rantaro, whereas she was closer to a partner in canon.
  • Ruder and Cruder: Everyone curses and acts perverted far more often than they did in canon. Completely absent in the remake.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Rantaro and Kaede get a lot of moments together, such as Rantaro feeding Kaede chocolate in their first free time event and the latter sleeping in the former's bed with him after the class trials. Following the end of the third trial, Kaede even asks Rantaro if he'll go out with her when they escape.
    • Shuichi get's a fair amount of it with Kirumi, with them playing Shogi together and having a flirty exchange while exploring the school.
    • Kaito and Maki also have several instances, most notably when he's the only student to accept her after she's revealed as the Ultimate Assassin. She later confirms that in spite of being Monokuma mole, she really did care of him.
  • Shrinking Violet: Shuichi is shown to be this. It also applies to Gonta.
    • Miu gives some hints of this.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Jin Kirigiri's execution is called Drill that Pierces the Gates to Hell.
    • As something of a Running Gag when asked about her newest inventions function. Miu will often jokingly answer with "It spreads butter."
    • The above Accidental Pervert scene is a direct reference to Danganronpa Class Swap, where a similar scene happens.
      • Another reference to Class Swap involves the first murder attempt in both stories being someone attempting to re-create Sayaka's murder attempt on Leon from canon, only for their would-be victim to be suspicious of the note and bring along backup who manages to disarm their attacker.
    • Upon learning of a particularly stupid moment where Miu forgot to bring up the fact that Kiibo never went inside her room, proving him innocent of the murder. Kaede has this to say;
    • Before a Rebuttal Showdown, Rantaro gives this response to Tenko:
  • Sir Swears Alot: Kokichi and Miu. Kirumi calls them out on this.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: This is how Kirumi speaks.
  • Spared By Adaptation:
    • Alongside canon survivor Shuichi, Rantaro (the first victim), Kaede (framed as first Blackened), Tenko (the fourth victim), Miu (the fifth victim) and Gonta (the fourth Blackened) survive the killing game this time around.
    • The presence of Korekiyo's sister in his motive video indicates that she hasn't died due to illness, unlike in canon.
    • Downplayed with Ryoma. While he still ends up being murdered, it's as the victim of Chapter 4. 2 chapters later than his canon counterpart.
    • The letter written by Kyosuke to Jin found in Chapter 6 reveals that Matsuda takes Ryota's place as leader of Future Foundation's 10th branch, meaning that he wasn't killed by Junko before the tragedy in this version of the story.
    • Kaito's status as the mastermind means that he outlives his canon counterpart, who's executed as Chapter five's culprit. However it's Downplayed as he's still executed.
  • The Stoic: Ryoma and Maki.
  • Straw Feminist: This aspect of Tenko is what makes Rantaro put her in the same group as Kokichi
  • Sweet Tooth: Kaede admits to thinking about cake more than music.
  • Taking the Heat: Tenko ends up trying to cover for Angie in the second trial by taking the blame for her murder scheme.
  • Tap on the Head:
  • Third-Person Person: Tenko and Gonta speak in this manner. Tenko ends up dropping it from chapter 3 onwards however, and she doesn't do it in the remake at all.
  • Walking the Earth: Rantaro did this in his search for his sisters.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Chapter 3, Class Trial Part 2. After making the revelation that Kiibo would have been incapable of killing Himiko due to the time it would take to cover up the crime scene, the students are ultimately stumped as to who was behind Himiko's murder. That is until Rantaro puts together that the killer could have killed Himiko by inflicting a fatal wound that wouldn't be instant. This winds up narrowing the number of possible culprits down to Kokichi. After the trial ends Kokichi reveals his motive and tells Rantaro about a passage in the boys bathroom on the 2nd floor. Taking Kokichi's advice, Rantaro finds a hidden room obscured by a revolving door disguised as a wall, containing a variety of information about Hope's Peak. Before he can go into any detail about it, he's only able to read a single note before he's attacked. After waking up he heads back to his room, only to end up hearing a conversation between Monokuma and the traitor, who's revealed to be Maki.
    • Chapter 4, Class Trial Part 2. Determining that with the evidence the group has, that Ryoma's head injury was caused by him hitting his head against the piranha tank hatch. Rantaro then follows this by clearing Tenko's name of the crime when he realises that, while she was the person who fed Ryoma drugged medicine, the fact that all of the bottles in the nurse's office were drugged with sleep medication, it was likely that she didn't drug the medicine herself. This is enough to put Maki into suspicion as the culprit, as she was the person to give Ryoma medicine before Tenko. After confirming that Maki was the only person who could dispose of the missing evidence, her crime is confirmed, outing herself as the traitor to the group by slip of the tongue. Upon the trial's end Monokuma reveals Maki's motivation for becoming the spy among the students, while Maki gives Shuichi her will. After the execution, Tenko admits that she needs to start treating the men in the group better. Later on, after reading Maki's will, Shuichi reveals the presence of another student in the school, Tsumugi Shirogane, who had been absent from the game since the start.
    • Chapter 5, Class Trial Part 2: After switching the point of view back to Rantaro upon which, instead of exposing a lie that Kaede made, he makes up his own lie that no one is able to disprove with the information they have at hand. Going from this, the students determine that Shuichi's failed murder attempt was targeted at the mastermind, and the stolen student registry was taken by Shuichi in an attempt to bait them. It's at that point Rantaro begins to suspect Kaede as Shuichi's killer, due to the clothes found within the laundry room belonging to her, in addition to the fact that she was assigned laundry duty. Rantaro proves she's the culprit by revealing that she could have hidden the Laundry Room keys inside her student handbook. However, when Monokuma tries to execute her by incineration, the execution is sabotaged, much like in canon. After the Trial, Rantaro heads back to his own room, only to be greeted by Shuichi, who was Faking the Dead the entire time.
  • You Just Told Me: Monokuma reveals he has a controller after revealing how confused he was by the fifth murder due a comment from Tenko making it seem like she knew.

Tropes pertaining to the remake:

  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • Kirumi is killed by heat exposure from being trapped in a sauna instead of falling to her death (canon) or having her throat slit (original fic)
    • Korekiyo is dragged over hot coals and decapited rather than being boiled to death (canon) or devoured by scarabs (original fic)
  • In Spite of a Nail: Word of God states that there's no difference in victims, killers or survivors compared to the original. Only the way they're written is changed.
  • Kinder and Cleaner: As a result of the students being written more in character, there's significantly less swearing than there is in the original fic.

     Part 2 - Jabberwock Island
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Monomi is brainwashed into becoming a host of the killing game by Monokuma, unlike in canon where she actively opposed him.
    • Byakuya's revealed to have been planning to kill Sakura at before he was killed, unlike in canon where he never followed through on his threats to commit a murder.
  • Age Lift: As members of Class 77 of Hope's Peak Academy instead of 78, everyone with the exception of Matsuda, who was already an original member of Class 77-A, is a year older than in canon.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Leon Kuwata, who was the canon first culprit of Trigger Happy Havoc, is the protagonist of the story this time around.
    • Yasuke Matsuda is an active participant in the killing game, unlike in canon when he only appeared in Danganronpa Zero as the Deuteragonist.
    • Mukuro Ikusaba was disguised as her twin sister Junko during the original game, and was long dead by the time she was introduced. In this story, she is introduced as her own character from the start.
  • Asshole Victim: Byakuya, he was already disliked among the group, causing few people to mourn him when they found him dead. When they end up finding that when he was killed while in the process of making preparations for his own plan to murder Sakura, nobody barring Syo feels bad for him.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Unlike in canon, instead of simply revoking her position as the class' teacher, Monokuma uses Monomi's magic stick on her to brainwash her into helping manage the killing game alongside him.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death:
    • The executions, once again.
    • Byakuya's murder. He has a bucket of bleach that he was preparing be thrown in his face before being stomped on the head until he's unconscious, before finally dying of blood loss and hypothermia after Ryoko traps him in the freezer and cuts his torso open. After he's dead, Yasuke castrates him and disembowls his torso before having Ryoko cook the organs Yasuke cut out out into kebabs.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Byakuya, a survivor in canon, is the victim of Chapter 1.
    • Ryoko is the culprit of Chapter 1, when in canon she was executed as the mastermind.
  • Decomposite Character: Syo and Toko are twin sisters rather than Syo being an alternate persona of Toko's.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Due to not being the mastermind unlike in canon, Ryoko has a new execution fitting her talent of Ultimate Fashion Model. 'Death Under the Spotlight' has Ryoko forced into a skimpy red dress and made to run a marathon across a giant red carpet while being chased by Monokumas and incurring burns from weaponised cameras used by the crowd Monokuma and Monomi. This culminates in her falling down a trap door, before being strangled and decapitated by a Monokuma.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Yasuke's presence within the killing game here spoils the reveal in the original Class Switch that he's still alive unlike in canon.
  • Spared By Adaptation: As of the end of Chapter 1 Sayaka (the first victim), Mukuro (executed for rule violation in Chapter 1), and Leon (The first Blackened) have survived longer than they did in canon.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: How Byakuya reacts to learning that Monomi is the class's teacher.
