The Akuma in General

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_akuma.png
Different stages of the Akuma with their creator, the Millennium Earl.

Artificial beings created by the Millennium Earl using human souls and metal skeletons made of Dark Matter. When someone in grief contacts the Earl to recover a deceased lost one, the Earl summons the soul of the dead person into the skeleton and it forces its way into the one who called it, killing the owner of the body and becoming an Akuma. They are the main weapons that the Earl and the Noah uses in the Holy War, and can evolve into higher levels the more people they kill.

  • Airborne Mook: All of them (with the exception of the Giant Akuma) have the ability to fly, making it hard to beat them in places where there is no land to stand yourself (like in the ocean).
  • Ax-Crazy: The Akuma are created only to kill others, so most of them are incredibly insane and excited about indulging in destruction and carnage.
  • Bishounen Line: The most they evolve, the most humanoid their true form becomes. They start as round creatures with a human face in the middle of their body, then by Level 2 they have a myriad of possible forms, by the time they become Level 3 they look like armored humanoids, the Giant Akuma is a lanky, giant anthropomorphic being, and the Level 4 resemble the horrifying mix of a human child with an angel. Unlike in other cases, however, they arguably become more terrifying the more human they look, as the Uncanny Valley gets progressively noticeable as their life cycle continues.
  • Body Horror: Any stage of the Akuma will invoke this at one time at least. Be it Level 1 going from humans to deformed ball-shaped abominations, to Level 1 evolving into Level 2 by violently ripping off their previous form, to how a Level 4 is created.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: Most Akuma tend to explode violently when they're destroyed, likely because they are machines.
  • Evil Evolves: They evolve into higher levels the more people they kill. It is unknown how many they need to destroy in order to do this, nor if they evolve faster if they kill special targets such as Exorcists. So far the highest they can get is to the Level 4.
  • Evolution Power-Up: Akuma have the ability to transform into stronger and more dangerous forms the more living beings they kill. They denominate this process "evolution".
  • Evolutionary Levels: The Akuma all have distinct evolutionary stages (appropriately referred to as "Levels") during their development as killer machines. So far in the story, we have Levels from the 0 (the Dark Matter skeleton the Earl creates to trap the soul of the people retrieved from the afterlife) to the 4.
  • The Heartless: They are born from the feelings of grief of people who lost loved ones, and as they evolve into higher levels, the soul from where they were created deteriorates more and more until being left unrecognizable.
  • Immune to Bullets: Non-Innocence-based human weapons, especially small arms, are practically useless against even the weakest of Akuma.
  • Killed Off for Real: Any Akuma who is not killed by an Innocence-based weapon (like being ordered to self-destruct by a Noah or being killed by another Akuma or by a Third Exorcist) has his/her soul lost forever.
  • Mecha-Mooks: They are machines with human souls and the backbone of the army of the Earl, being the ones who tend to get in the way of the Exorcists. Their kind varies depending of the level, with Level 1 and 2 being standard Mooks, Level 3 being Elite Mook, Giant Akuma being Giant Mook and Level 4 being basically an upgraded Elite Mook.
  • Mook Lieutenant: The Akuma actually have a hierarchy while not directly supervised by the Earl, the Noah or the Skulls, and that is that the ones of higher levels command the rest. Some examples can be seen in the anime where Level 2 often are seen commanding an army of Level 1 or in the Phantom Thief G arc, where a Level 4 acts as the leader of a group composed by it, one Level 3 and two level 2.
  • Our Dark Matter Is Mysterious: Like the Noah, Akuma uses Dark Matter abilities to fight, though they cannot destroy Innocence. Akuma from Levels 2 and 3 even have their own specific Dark Matter powers depending on the individual.
  • Tragic Monster: Under their sadistic and insane personalities, there is an innocent soul of someone who was forced to kill a loved one and is subjected to follow the Earl and his allies for the eternity, with the soul suffering more and more the longer the Akuma lives. This is better shown when Allen destroys Thread in the Asian branch, in which, despite how cocky his Akuma body was behaving, his soul was grateful to being saved from his suffering.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Earl and the Noah. Not that they have much to say in the matter or anything, as they are completely under their wills. However, though they are very obedient, when they are not supervised they can interpose their missions for their personal goals, like when some Akuma (who were sent to destroy the Fallen One in which Suman had became) started to attack Anita's ship because their bloodlust kicked on after detecting Allen and his friends, ignoring their true target.
  • Was Once a Man: In life, they were normal people who were turned into monsters due the feelings of loss their loved ones felt when they died, who made them make a contract with the Millenium Earl. Now they are trapped in the bodies of the one who summoned them and are forced to become literal killing machines, with their personality becoming more depraved the more they evolve.

Level 1

    Level 0
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/level_0_akuma.PNG

The very beginning of an Akuma. A skeleton made of Dark Matter where the soul of the person about to be turned into an Akuma is forcibly trapped when the one summoning them calls them from the afterlife. They are not long for much, as the Earl then forces the newly born Akuma to kill and wear the skin of their summoner.

  • Blade Below the Shoulder: The skeletons of Dark Matter the Earl creates have huge, sharp blades for arms. This allows them to kill their summoner to then introduce themselves in their corpses.
  • Scary Skeleton: The very first phase of the Akuma life cycle before turning into a Level 1 are creepy skeletons created with the Dark Matter of the Earl where the soul of the deceased who has been called back to Earth is locked. They then kill the loved one who "revived" them and introduce themselves on their body to properly become a Level 1.
  • SkeleBot 9000: While creating an Akuma, the Earl first traps the soul summoned from the afterlife in a sinister looking mechanical skeleton made of his Dark Matter.

Normal Level 1
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/level15.PNG
A Level 1 about to evolve.

The first stage of the Akuma, consists in floating ball-shaped creatures able to create many canons from their bodies to shoot their poisonous blood (that contains a deadly virus that kills human upon contact). They don't appear to be very intelligent at first, behaving in an erratic way and showing no emotion at all. They however start to develop a sadistic and cruel personality as they transition to Level 2. They are also the weakest Akuma type.

  • Beam Spam: They tend to fight by shooting bullets stylized as energy beams (that have their blood infused in them) from the canons who come from their bodies.
  • It Can Think: While Level 1s are unintelligent and usually either have stoic, unemotional faces or have their mouth agape in an expression of agony, as they begin to show signs of evolving into Level 2s they start to exhibit a sadistic behaviour.
  • Mooks: They are the lowest ranked of the Akuma, and as such, are easily destroyed by any experienced Exorcist they find.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: To normal humans they are unstoppable weapons of carnage they cannot do anything against. For any seasoned Exorcist, however, they are little more than nuissances they can dispatch quickly. Case in point, at the start of the series, Allen easily destroys the Akuma of Claire the nun when he reveals his Innocence, who until that point was shown to be a terrifying monster that the police was unable to harm.
  • Zerg Rush: Their modus operandi. Because alone they are easy targets, they tend to come in large numbers to make up for their lack of power. They are most often than not destroyed by the Exorcists, but they can still kill lots of Finders this way.

    Claire and Marc

Claire and Marc

Claire voiced by: Yuri Amano (JP), Sara Polo (SP)

Mark voiced by: Tokuyoshi Kawashima (JP), Juan d'Ors (SP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/claire_and_marc_anime.PNG
In the anime

In the manga as a nun and a priest

An Akuma created with the soul of a nun and the body of a priest, both from Great Britain. Claire was the older sister of officer Moore Heese, who fell in love with the priest who helped her and her sister when their parents were killed by criminals and ended up marrying him. However, an accident ended up killing her in front of her husband and sister, who made Marc fall into despair and come to the Millennium Earl in order to revive Claire, which ended up creating an Akuma, who proceeded to live with Moore to remain unsuspected as it continued to kill people to evolve.

  • Adaptational Job Change: Claire and Marc are in the source material a married nun and a priest respectively. Due to the connotations and plain inaccuracy about clergymen marrying and ignoring their celibacy vow, the anime shows them as people unrelated to the church.
  • Artistic License – Religion: Clergymen take a celibacy vow once they take the cloth, so an official marriage between Marc and Claire would have been unlikely and not accurate with Christian values. Likely for this reason the anime depicts them as normal people with no relation to the church.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: What killed Claire differs between the manga and the anime. In the manga she's crushed to death by a cross suspended above the piano she was playing while talking with Mark alone (while her sister was behind him listening to their conversation). In the anime she's also killed by a falling big object, but instead of a cross it's by a big, hanging chandelier, in the day of her wedding with Mark no less.
  • Go Out with a Smile: After Allen destroys the Akuma she became, Claire appears smiling sweetly before going to the afterlife, released from her suffering.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: The Akuma of Claire gets killed by Allen after he pierces it with his Innocence, instantly destroying it.
  • Inconsistent Spelling:
    • The name of Moore's sister seems to be Claire, who is an actual name for women. However, the anime translates her name as "Crea" based on a possible translation from "Claire" (that in Japanese is pronounced "Kurea"), which isn't a true real name, making things confusing.
    • Likewise, her husband's name is either translated as "Marc" or "Mark".
  • Rage Against the Heavens: After Claire's death, Marc lost himself into despair and sorrow and cursed God for taking his wife from him, which led to the Earl to find him. Allen briefly mentions the twisted irony of a priest cursing the God he's supposed to worship.
  • Starter Villain: It's the first Akuma to ever appear in the story and the first Allen confronts in the present time, ending up defeated in a quick fight and mostly serving to introduce the concept of the Akuma and how the Earl creates them.
  • Taking the Bullet: In the anime, Claire pushes Marc aside from the trajectory of the falling chandelier before he gets hit by it, falling victim to it instead.

    Leo

Leo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leo_d_gray_man.PNG

The best friend of a boy named Jan. Together, they patrolled their city in order to combat the Millennium Earl and his Akuma. Though knowing the dangers of the Earl, Leo made a deal with him to revive his recently deceased mother, thus turning her into an Akuma and becoming the host of her soul. The Earl uses him to lure Jan towards a graveyard and teach him a lesson, but Allen appears in time to stop him.

  • And Then John Was a Zombie: In spite of knowing that he would die and condemn the soul of his mother to an endless torment, he still made a deal with the Earl to bring her back, which ended with him becoming the skin of the Akuma.
  • Death of a Child: His death after making a deal with the Earl serves to show that not even children are safe of being used to create Akuma.
  • Mercy Kill: Allen puts the Akuma he made of his mother along with other more the Earl called out of their misery with his Cross Grave attack, as a request from Jan after realizing his actions led to him making the Akuma-creating deal.
  • Perpetual Smiler: A sign to show that Leo is gone and an Akuma has replaced him is the permanent, empty smile on his face, that only goes out when Jan mentions his master.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miena.PNG
Miena
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/narain.PNG
Narain

A pair of Indian siblings working as servants (and as a dancer too in the case of Miena) for a maharani widow named Urmina. Upon the arrival of Cross and Allen to India, Narain befriended the latter after Cross became Urmina's lover and stayed in her palace for a while, becoming a dear friend of him. Both of them had dreams, Miena wanted to become a dancer in London, while Narain wanted to be a doctor. However, their dreams came to a cruel end when Miena died crushed by a falling building during an Akuma attack and a heartbroken Narain brought her back as an Akuma, forcing Allen to destroy them.

  • Canon Foreigner: They only appear in the anime, with Allen's situation in India not being delved about much in the manga.
  • Death by Origin Story: The siblings played an important role in making Allen accept the idea that he had to fight Akuma in order to fight them by turning into one Allen was forced to destroy, thus firmly setting him in the path of an Exorcist.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Miena's soul departs to the afterlife with a sweet smile, thanking Allen for releasing her from her suffering as an Akuma.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Depending on the translation you would get either Miena/Mina or Narain/Narein.
  • Nice Guy: Narain is portrayed as a kind, helpful young man always ready to assist others in need. It makes his fate the more tragic.
  • Posthumous Character: Both died (both as humans and as an Akuma) two years before the start of the story.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: They are minor likable characters who died to show Allen that he had to face his fear of running away from Akuma if he wanted to save them.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: They only appear in one episode and are long dead by the time Allen tells his past with them, but their tragedy is what made Allen understand that he had to fight and destroy Akuma to release them from their curse, being the first Akuma Allen destroyed on his own volition. Allen fondly remembers the times he spent with Narain and still mourns the outcome he and his older sister got.

Level 2 Akuma

    Level 2 in General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/level_2_akuma.PNG

The second stage of the Akuma. After a Level 1 has killed the right amount of humans, it evolves into a Level 2. Unlike the previous phase, they have many different forms, and there are no two Level 2 who looks exactly the same. Their forms can vary, from some who looks like animals, to humanoid figures, weapons, or even objects such as poker cards. This time they they have a personality, who tends to be bloodthirsty and cruel, and unlike the Level 1, whose only ability is to shoot blood bullets, now each one has an special unique Dark Matter ability.

  • Animalistic Abomination: Many of them have the shape of monstrous animals, including frogs, wolves, cats, wasps etc.
  • Demoted to Extra: Once, they were pretty common in the series, but nowadays, though some of them appear from time to time, most of them have been replaced by the Level 3 Akuma as the footsoldiers of the Earl. Kinda justified, since the good guys became strong enough to kill them easily, so the Earl was forced to unleash the strongest Akuma available. It's probably that a big chunk of them were either killed by the Exorcists, evolved or were just eaten by their partners of higher level.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Others have the form of deformed humanoids (the first one who appeared on the series was a Monster Clown).
  • Monster of the Week: If you are watching a self-contained filler episode of the first anime, odds are that one of these guys ends up being the antagonist of the episode, probably ending destroyed without much fanfare by the end of it too.
  • Villain Decay: The first one to appear gave Allen a hard time and almost killed Kanda, while others like Eliade were also a threat. However, as the Exorcists became stronger, they started to kill them with ease, and nowadays they barely are a menace to the good guys. This is why they have been replaced by the more efficent Level 3 for the most part.

    Pierrot

Pierrot

Voiced by: Hidenari Ugaki (JP), Vic Mignogna (EN), Miguel Ayones (SP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pierrot_akuma.PNG

The first level 2 Akuma to appear in the series during the "Ghost of Matera" story arc. He served as the main antagonist of the second volume of the manga and was killed by Allen and Kanda when he attempted to steal the innocence they were sent to retrieve. His special ability was Paper Mirror, which allowed him to copy the appearance and abilities of whatever he came into contact with.

  • An Arm and a Leg: In the climax of the Ghost of Mater arc, Kanda cuts the arm in which he was replicating Allen's Innocence, leaving him vulnerable for the last attack of the Exorcists.
  • Arc Villain: He serves as the main antagonist of the Ghost of Mater arc, being the main obstacle and source of conflict for the Exorcists in their attempt to get Lala's Innocence.
  • Ax-Crazy: Even for the standards of the Akuma, he's especially unhinged and murderous, exclaiming happily his nature as an Akuma seconds after evolving and spending most of his appearances giggling at the prospect of harming others.
  • Creepily Long Arms: His arms are very slender and long, ending in two big hands and making him disproportionate. He later also copies Allen's Innocence arm, which look more at home with the rest of his body.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: During his final attack on Allen and Kanda he used his power to create a body of sand skin that was invulnerable to physical damage and used it trap Allen. Fortunately, Allen's upgraded Innocence was able to cut through it and render him vulnerable again.
  • Giggling Villain: He's constantly chuckling in a sadistic way.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: His body is severed in half at the torso by Allen before their final confrontation.
  • Lean and Mean: He has a mostly lithe physique with wide hips and thin limbs, and is as evil as they come.
  • Monster Clown: Upon evolving he resembles a demented court jester with warped proportions.
  • Nightmare Face: His default face is one with a permanent deranged grimace with Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises, a very long tongue and sharp teeth.
  • Power Copying: He could copy the appearance and powers of anything his skin touched, from sand to humans and was even able to replicate Allen's anti-akuma weapon near perfectly. The only flaws of this power is that it can only create a mirror image of its target, making it fairly ineffective at making disguises as well as the fact that it couldn't copy the skill to fully use the weapon it copied from Allen, leading to its defeat.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Upon his evolution, he proves to be a stronger, tougher and more intelligent enemy than the Level 1s, especially for Allen, as he was the first Level 2 he ever encounters. From that point on, Level 2s become to main threats of the story for a while.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He spends most of his fights with Kanda and Allen with an excited, sadistic disposition, but once he's overwhelmed by Allen's new arm cannon and later when Kanda bisects his arm and both Exorcists blast him away with the combined power of their Innocence, he loses his cool and screams helplessly before being destroyed for good.

From left to right: Pang, Ice, Kazekiri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ice_akuma_flame_form.PNG
Ice's ice flame form

A trio of Level 2 Akuma who served Road during the "Rewinding Town" story arc. Their abilities are Punk Voice (Pang), which destroys victims brains with supersonic soundwaves, Ice Fire (Ice), a super cold flame that burns at freezing temperatures to rot flesh and Wind Scythe (Kazekiri), which shoots out gusts of razor sharp wind.

Tropes about the three

  • Bald of Evil: Pang and Kazekiri are devoid of any hair, and are sadistic Akuma who like to kill their victims in gruesome methods.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: Ice with his huge size is the Big; Kazekiri with his slender body is the Thin; and Pang is the Short as the smallest of the three.
  • Dwindling Party: They are destroyed one after the other at the climax of the Rewinding Town arc. Pang is shot to death by Allen while dealing with Lenalee's tornado, Ice is forced to self-destruct by Road to test Allen's resolve, and Kazekiri is swiftly finished by Lenalee after trying to attack Miranda.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: In their first fight with Allen, rather than attacking each other to decide who kills him, they instead decided to solve it with a game of rock-paper-scissors, which for Akuma standards is really civilized.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: There were actually other two Akuma along with them. One of them attacked Miranda in an alleyway to force her to reveal the whereabouts of the Innocence presented in the city, but was easily destroyed by Allen. The other was along with the main trio, but was destroyed by Allen and Lenalee in the first fight they have with the Akuma in the cafe where they meet Miranda. Neither of them are mentioned at all after their deaths.
  • The Heavy: While Road is the Arc Villain of the Rewinding Town arc, as she's not a fighter she uses these three to do most of the heavy work while she simply observes in the sidelines.
  • Laughably Evil: Despite being genuine threats, compared with other Akuma, they get into more comedic moments and their antics come as more amusing than menacing.
  • No Name Given: The trio is never mentioned by name in the series at any point, neither in the manga or the anime. Their names are only given in the ending credits of the anime.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: They childishly like to kill people with their Dark Matter abilities and solve disagreements with a game of rock-paper-scissors.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: They serve as this for the Rewinding Town arc, acting as Road's lackeys, and, for the most part, are the ones who do the dirty job.

Tropes about Pang

  • Boom, Headshot!: In the confusion of the tornado that Lenalee created, he's killed when Allen shoots with his Innocence directly to his heads, obliterating him.
  • Butt-Monkey: He's the smallest, weakest Akuma in the group, suffers the most abuse of the three and is the first to be destroyed.
  • Flipping the Bird: He's fond of doing this, especially when he gets attacked by Allen during his game of Rock, Paper and Scissors.
  • Glass Cannon: His ability is very dangerous and potentially crippling, but his body is really weak. All it takes to destroy him is a single attack from Allen.
  • Make Some Noise: His power is the one to use sounds waves to turn his victims brains into mush and damage their nerves, also being able to destroy the surroundings with his voice.
  • Multiple Head Case: He has four slightly pumpkin-like heads. This makes him vulnerable, as Allen destroys him by shooting into them.

Tropes about Ice

  • An Arm and a Leg: Once Miranda's Innocence makes him recover, Allen severs Ice's right arm with his Innocence while rescuing Lenalee from Road. However, this doesn't really hinders him, as he can fight just fine without an arm.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: He's forced by Road to self-destruct against his will, while his soul cries for Allen to rescue him in his last moments.
  • An Ice Person: His Cold Flames ability makes everything he touches that is not a living organism to freeze, including floors and walls.
  • Breath Weapon: He mainly shoots his Ice Fire ability out of his mouth.
  • The Brute: Among the trio, he's both the biggest and the one with the strongest ability.
  • Cold Flames: Has the ability to create fire that burns at subzero temperatures.
  • Hellish Pupils: His pupils are slitted like those of reptiles in his normal form. He develops round, less menacing pupils when he unleashes his full power, though.
  • Killed Off for Real: Since Ice dies by self-destructing (under Road's command) instead of at the hands of the Innocence, his soul explodes and dies forever.
  • Make Them Rot: His flames inflict this on flesh that it burns.
  • One-Winged Angel: When Ice unleashes his full power, he becomes a being made of Cold Flames. It makes touching him dangerous.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: He's basically just a muscular torso and arms.
  • Primal Stance: As he lacks a lower body (his lower half instead ending in a key), he's always crouching and supporting himself with his huge arms.
  • Scary Teeth: Both of his forms have creepy looking teeth. In his default form they are sharp and distributed sparsely through his mouth, while in his ice fire mode they become jagged and skeletal-like.
  • Technicolor Fire: Going with his Cold Flames ability, his fire is depicted as white colored.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Ice is the biggest and more imposing member of the trio, but his voice in the Japanese version is considerable high pitched and delicate, definetely not what you would expect from a creature with that appearance. Averted in the Spanish dub, when he's given a deeper voice.

Akuma A after absorbing the other two.

A trio of Level 2 Akuma aiding Skinn Bolic in his search for the Leaf of Revival. The three of them have abilities related to ice and snow.

  • Arc Villain: Of the Leaf of Revival two-parter episodes. While Skinn is technically ordering them, he never gets to fight the Exorcists and remains an observer, while the trio ends up being the main threat of the episodes.
  • The Assimilator: In addition to her snow storm creation ability, Akuma A can also forcibly absorb other Akuma and acquire their abilities, as she does with her two partners when she sees that alone they aren't enough to defeat Kanda and Lavi. She however doesn't kills them and merely adds them to her body, as upon their destruction their three souls are seen ascending to the afterlife.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: They fulfill this trope in both their Akuma and human forms. Akuma B is a tall, muscular man as a human and a towering dog-like machine as an Akuma (big), Akuma A is a white haired slim woman as a human and a mechanical lamia as an Akuma (thin) and Akuma C is a short, overweight man as a human and a smaller tank-like robot as an Akuma (short).
  • Cute Monster Girl: Compared to other Level 2 Akuma seen in the story, Akuma A has an attractive human face and a more humanoid body.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: In her human form, Akuma A has white hair, which fits well a character with a snow-based ability.
  • Evil Laugh: After merging with her partners and increasing her power, Akuma A lets out a loud, malicious laugh.
  • Fat Bastard: Akuma C looks like an overweight middle-aged man in his human disguise, and is also quite rotund in his Akuma form.
  • An Ice Person: Their abilities are all snow/ice based. Akuma A can create snow storms out of the holes of her chest, Akuma B can shoot icicles out of his mouth and Akuma C can shoot snowballs out of his body cannons. Also, after absorbing the other two, Akuma A also displays the ability to create a cold wind that freezes the legs of her targets.
  • More Deadly Than the Male: Akuma A proves to be more competent than her two male partners, lasting longer than them against the Exorcists and even absorbing them to gain a stronger form.
  • No Name Given: They aren't given a name at all, just being credited as Akuma A, B and C respectively.
  • Robot Dog: Akuma B's true form is that of a huge, bipedal dog-like machine.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In their first fight with the Exorcists, they almost manage to defeat Allen and Lavi. However, the sudden appearance of Kanda makes them retire, not wanting to deal with him without a plan.
  • Snake People: Akuma A has the shape of an armless lamia-like being with two screws across her torso, snow eyewear in her face and a tail that ends up in a snow crystal in her true form.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Upon finding Allen's group, they try to pass themselves as harmless lost travellers in the snow. However, Allen's cursed eye quickly outs them as Akuma, which makes them reveal themselves and attack the Exorcists.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After Lavi and Kanda defeat Akuma C and B, Akuma A calls them pathetic and absorbs them to become stronger and gain their abilities.
  • Your Size May Vary: Akuma B looks like either considerably or just slightly bigger than the others depending on the shot.

Human disguise

A pathetically weak level 2 akuma that only appears in an anime filler episode where it tries to assassinate Lenalee. Foiled at every turn and ultimately destroyed in one blow by Allen, this poor akuma was quite possibly the most pathetic seen in the entire series. He had the power to shapeshift perfectly.

  • Butt-Monkey: He hasn't killed a single human since evolving into a level 2 and has lost most of his offensive abilities in exchange for a near useless shapeshifting power. He even gets knocked around by ordinary humans and peed on by a dog, making him even weaker than a level 1 akuma.
  • Canon Foreigner: Only shows up in a single episode of the anime, and has no known manga counterpart.
  • Devious Daggers: He attempts to stab Lenalee to death with a knife twice; one in a tie shop while she and Jake Russell are distracted looking at the ties and another in an optic where he kidnaps Russell, transforms into him and tries to attack Lenalee after turning the lights off. Both of these attempts fail spectacularly, the first thanks to one of Komui's bombs and the second after he trips and ends over Lenalee in a compromising position, just as Komui enters the optic.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite being an Akuma, he doesn't shares the excessive bloodlust and thirst for destruction others of his kind show, being more subdued and even sparing Russell when he takes his appearance, merely gagging him. He too expresses relief at not having to kill Lenalee after his destruction.
  • Fights Like a Normal: As his only ability is the one to perfectly shape-shift into others, he employs rather mundane methods (for the setting of D.Gray-man at least) to kill Lenalee, such as bombs, knives or poison.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: According to him, as a Level 1 he was unstopabble and a true weapon of carnage. However, upon evolving into a Level 2 he turned into an utterly pathetic fool.
  • Humiliation Conga: He suffers one that lasts for the entire episode.
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: Absolutely nothing goes his way and he serves as a punching bag during the entire episode he appears in. He barely poses a danger even towards normal humans and animals.
  • Love at First Sight: Downplayed. He develops a small crush on Lenalee upon seeing a photo of hers, but still tries to kill her as any Akuma would do. At the end, however, when Allen destroys him he says that he's happy about not having killed her at the end.
  • Monster of the Week: Serves as the main antagonist of the 18th episode of the anime and is destroyed at the end of it. Not that he was a particularly tough opponent, though.
  • Pretty Boy: He transforms into a pretty, young, blond man in order to both hide his Akuma appearance and get on the good side of people. While it works in making a woman who abused him previously swoon for him and befriend a dog who attacked and peed on him, is about the only thing he accomplishes through the episode, as the disguise is otherwise useless.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: His only real power is the ability to mimic anyone he sees, which is basically a downgraded version of the power the first level 2 in the series had. While he does have the advantages of not needing to psychically touch his targets and becomes a perfect copy instead of a mirrored image it does little to actually help him.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Something that ends up going against him. His shapeshifting ability is practically perfect, but he has nothing else, neither possessing noticeable brute strength or even the basic ability to throw Dark Matter blasts other Akuma has. As such, he ends up being a non-threat.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He tries to eliminate Lenalee multiple times through the episode to recover his lost glory as a killer machine. However, he also develops a bit of a crush on her and after being destroyed he comments that he's glad he didn't ultimately kill her.

A Level 2 Akuma who fell in love with Krory. She intended to live in his castle alone with him forever until Allen and Lavi arrived and exposed her as an Akuma. With her plans ruined, she resolves to kill Krory and Krory then has to kill her.

  • Become a Real Boy: As she spent more time in her human form, she came to wish to become a real human woman so she could be beautiful all the time and she didn't have to kill all men who got close to her.
  • Best Her to Bed Her: A variation. Being an Akuma, she'd end up killing any man weaker than her, so the only person she can be with is someone who could potentially destroy her.
  • Femme Fatale: Not quite The Vamp, as she genuinely wants to find love, but close.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in pigtails.
  • I Just Want to Be Beautiful: As she spent more time in her human form and she realized how it got attention from male humans, she became obsessed with being beautiful and wanted everyone to praise her for it. She came to hate turning back into her true Akuma form because it's so ugly.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: She wanted to fall in love with a man who would adore her. Unfortunately, due to her nature as an Akuma she ended up killing all men who got close to her until she met Krory.
  • In Love with the Mark: She was originally sent by the Earl to investigate Krory and kill him if he was proven to be a threat. When she met him, she realized he could be the man strong enough to kill her she had been looking for and became his lover.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Krory. He carries the memory of her dearly after he is forced to kill her and it becomes one of his main motivations to kill Akuma.
  • Making a Splash: Her akuma form had the ability to spit giant bubbles that drained the moisture out of whatever they touched. This very nearly kills Krory but he manages to defeat Eliade and restore himself by drinking her blood after she gets too close to him during their battle.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She manipulated Krory by making him believe he was a monster and he had to stay inside the castle with her his entire life so she could have him for herself forever. She also tricked him into attacking Allen and Lavi, making him think they were his enemies.
  • Meaningful Name : Eliade is a real Romanian surname; she is probably named after the famous Romanian historian of religion and mysticism, Mircea Eliade, who is probably the most internationally well-known Romanian who had that name. The katakana used to render both names (エリアーデ) is the same. This fits well with Krory, who is named after a famous occultist.
  • Non Human Lover Reveal: Krory had no idea Eliade was an Akuma until Allen and Lavi exposed her true nature.
  • One-Winged Angel: Like all low-level Akuma, but she lampshades it by saying how she hates to turn into something so ugly.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Krory. They love each other, but since she's an Akuma and he's an Exorcist, they are natural enemies and he ends up killing her.
  • Water Is Womanly: Has bubble powers and wants to become a beautiful human woman to find love.
  • Yandere: She does love Krory. She also happens to be an Akuma. So...

Under the influence of the Innocence.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/frog_akuma_true_nature.PNG
True nature.
An Akuma with the appearance of a frog that Krory met in his first mission, being informally known as a benevolent beast by the family who adopted him. Came one day to a village where he quickly became a symbol of pride among the villagers due to his clumsy yet endearing nature, befriending a farmer and his two children. Despite being an Akuma, he has no intention to hurt anyone and is content to live a peaceful live in the farm, which makes the Exorcists suspect his intentions. Unfortunately, when the Innocence residing in the church of the village is freed, his true nature is revealed.
  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: His main weapon are the huge claws on his arms, that he favors over his own Dark Matter ability.
  • Acrofatic: Despite his bulky apperance, he can move and attack really fast. He's even able to dodge one of Lavi's strikes and keep up with Krory for a while.
  • Amphibian Assault: He looks like a huge frog with big claws, huge teeth and a tail. While under the influence of the Innocence in the village's church glass he's sweet and harmless, once leaving it's area of effect he becomes a savage monster with no qualms about harming people like all Akuma.
  • Amphibian at Large: In addition to being frog-shaped, he's also really towering, dwarfing even a tall individual like Krory.
  • Brainwashing for the Greater Good: The Innocence he was tasked with taking did this to him, subverting his murderous nature and turning him into a good-natured creature. Once the stained glass powering the Innocence is broken, however, the Akuma returns to his usual aggressive self.
  • Dumb Muscle: In contrast with his mild-mannered altered personality, once returning to his natural Akuma behavior he turns into a mindless brute who simply roars and charges at his enemies or victims without employing any tactic or attack other than his natural strength.
  • Kind Hearted Simpleton: Under the influence of the Innocence he's shown to be dimwitted and childish, but also kind and loving to those he treasures. Of course, this is no more once he goes back to his usual Akuma behaviour.
  • Monster of the Week: For the 28th episode of the anime, that deals with Krory's first official mission as an Exorcist.
  • Razor Wind: The only special ability he's shown to have is the one to throw crescent shaped sharp gusts of Dark Matter able to cut down trees, similar to Kazekiri from the Rewinding Town arc.
  • Scary Teeth: In his natural state, his teeth appear as huge, sharp fangs showing his monstrous nature. While under the influence of the Innocence he has Cute Little Fangs, though.
  • Token Heroic Orc: Subverted. He initially appears as an anomaly among the Akuma, being a childish but good natured being who's content with a simple life in the farm and abhors the idea of hurting people. However, is eventually revealed that the reason why he behaves like that is because the village where he resides has an Innocence (that he was sent to retrieve) with a barrier that impedes Level 1s from crossing and turns Level 2s into docile, peaceful creatures. It's then revealed that the Akuma returned to his true personality while leaving the village and was responsible for destroying neighboring villages. When the stained glass of the church where the Innocence was residing is broken, the Akuma soon turns against the villagers who adopted him and forces Krory to destroy him.
  • Walking Spoiler: Knowing the truth about why this Akuma behaves so differently from the rest of his kind spoils the main twist of the episode.
  • Your Size May Vary: Depending on the shot, his size goes from slightly taller than an adult man to several sizes bigger.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sophia_2.jpg

A powerful level 2 akuma created from the body and soul of a pair of twin sisters who rules over a town in the woods where people mysteriously disappear. She is the main antagonist of chapter 2 of the Reverse novel series which was later adapted into a two part episode for the anime. She has the power to read minds and cast illusions.

  • From Nobody to Nightmare: If the town had gotten over their pointless need to have a witch to blame their misfortunes on she never would have become an akuma in the first place. In the end she ends up turning everyone else into an akuma as revenge, leading to the entire village being destroyed. The townsfolk got their witch after all...
  • Master of Illusion: She can read minds and cast illusions of whatever a person desires most. However, she lacks the ability to understand the illusion or why someone would wish for it, leading to her defeat by Kanda.
  • Psychic Powers: She can read the minds of people and cast illusions of their greatest desire.
  • Tragic Monster: She is treated as a very tragic individual even by akuma standards and Kanda's finder companion is seen weeping over her death after learning her backstory. She never would have become an akuma in the first place if not for a pointless tradition.

Click here to see her Akuma form

An Akuma exclusive from a filler arc (going from episodes 41 to 50) of the first anime, serving Lulu Bell. She dresses as a maid and her soul belongs to one, having served a princess in the past whose body was made to create the Akuma. Displays an unlimited loyalty towards her master, and will resort to do anything to fulfill her wishes. She mainly fights with a pair of giant, steel fans that she can use to throw to the enemy or shoot their tips like projectiles.

  • Canon Foreigner: She only appears in a filler arc from the first anime and no known counterpart of hers has appeared in the manga.
  • Dark Action Girl: In battle, she's vicious and ruthless, and unlike other examples of the series, she fights directly instead of resorting to special abilities (though she's not opposed to play tricks and cooperate with other Akuma to overwhelm her enemies).
  • Decoy Damsel: She spends one episode pretending to be an ordinary maid in order to steal Lavi's Innocence and kill him and a sick Lenalee when they're defenseless. Lavi buys the act for a while after "saving" Mimi (who was faking being attacked by a Level 1), but she reveals her true colors in the climax of the episode after Lavi gets distracted saving Lenalee from a flood and Mimi takes his hammer away in the confusion.
  • The Dragon: She's Lulu Bell's top enforcer and the subordinate she trust the most. Curiously, her Akuma form is that of a large, iron dragon.
  • Ninja Maid: Apart of serving as the personal maid of Lulu Bell, she's also an effective fighter.
  • Perky Female Minion: Contrasting the serious and quiet Lulu Bell, Mimi is an upbeat, cheerful servant completely devoted to her master and more overtly comedic.

Click here to see her Akuma form

A Level 2 Akuma who was modified by Cross Marian in order to supress her bloodlust and help the Exorcists who were travelling to Edo. Appears for the first time while carrying the crystal Inocence in which Lenalee was trapped after her battle with Eshi. From that point, guides Lavi's group to Edo, but eventually succumbs to the influence of the Earl in her. Finally, she aids the Exorcists in a suicide charge against the Giant Akuma before dying due her wounds.

  • Black Eyes of Evil: When she's struggling to resist the Earl's commands, the schlera around her eyes turns black.
  • Curtains Match the Window: In her human form, both her eyes and hair are depicted as brownish red.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Even in her demonic form, she looks a lot less monstrous and more cartoony than other Akuma. Lavi develops an instant crush on her.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She (along with two other Level 2 Akuma that were also altered by Cross) is so far the only Akuma that has joined forces with the Exorcists (due Cross programming her to help his unit in Japan).
  • Killed Off for Real: She dies after being hit by an attack of one of the Giant Akuma that Lavi, Krory and Bookman were fighting against, and then she self-destructs after reaching her limit. Due not being slain by an Innocence, her soul is lost forever.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: Her human form is depicted wearing a pink kimono. Justified, since her soul resides in the body of a Japanese woman belonging to a Japan that never opened her frontiers to the west, thus she follows the traditional clothing style of the time.
  • Light Is Good: She's golden colored, and thanks to Cross's modifications on her, she now helps the Exorcists (to an extent at least).
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She self-destructs after helping the exorcists to reach the head of the Giant Akuma.
  • Mr. Exposition: Her main role in the series was to guide Cross's unit to the city of Edo, then explaining them Cross's situation and what happened to the country once the Earl took it.
  • Nice Girl: Her natural Akuma bloodlust aside, she is helpful, kind and supportive, if a bit teasing towards Lavi. She even sacrifices her life for her allies when she was about to snap from her Akuma instincts
  • Token Good Teammate: Due the modifications Cross did on her, she's this among the rest of the Akuma. While her kind tends to be cruel, murderous and bloodthirsty, she for the contrary is nice, helpful and helps the Exorcists through their journey to Japan. Even when she start succumbing to the Earl's commands, she manages to hold her own enough to avoid turning on her allies, eventually sacrificing her life for them. Despite this, she still has a dislike for Innocence, as it harms her as much as the rest of the Akuma.
  • Verbal Tic: She says "cho" at the end of her sentences, leading to...
  • Verbal Tic Name: Lavi nicknaming her Chomesuke. She likes that name better than her other one, to the point that she eventually treats being called "Sachiko" as her berserk button.

    Wizard Akuma

Wizard Akuma

Voiced by: Mutsuki Iwanaka (JP)

A level two akuma who was part of the group that attacked Timothy's orphanage and was possessed by his newly awakened Innocence power. She had the special ability "Magic Eye" which let her transform human beings into fragile immobile dolls if she maintained eye contact with them for a short time.
  • And I Must Scream: Her "Magic Eye" allows her to turn humans into immobile dolls that are still fully conscious but unable to run away.
  • Gender Flip: In the anime the Akuma has a clearly masculine voice despite having a female human form in the manga (that is never shown in the anime), implying it's a male there.
  • Team Killer: The broker of darkness nun who betrayed the orphanage learned the hard way that akuma only have Undying Loyalty to the Earl, the Noah and no one else.
Broker Nun: What are you doing?! I'm on your side!
Wizard Akuma: My side? Then allow me to feed on you comrade. *CRUSH*
  • Weak, but Skilled: She's nowhere near as physically strong as her companions but makes up for it by having a devastatingly powerful ability.

    Rabbit Akuma

Rabbit Akuma

Voiced by: Shuuhei Iwase (JP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rabbitakuma.jpg

A large fat akuma that resembles a rabbit. He is part of the Paris group that attack Timothy's orphanage and is killed when the Wizard Akuma's power is taken by Timothy and turned against him. His only ability was a "Ventral Pocket" that allowed him to store items or captured people.

  • Killer Rabbit: He takes the form of a large cartoonish rabbit with sharp fangs.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: His design seems to be a complete inverse of the Wizard Akuma with him having a near useless power but tons of physical strength and being one of the larger level twos seen in the series.
  • Your Head Asplode: After being hit with the Wizard Akuma's power his body becomes so brittle that a single punch from Timothy completely destroys his head and sends one of his eyes flying from its socket.

Level 3 Akuma

    Level 3 in General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/level_3_akuma.PNG
Original Level 3s
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/new_level_3_akuma.jpg
Variation shown after the invasion of the Order.

The third stage of the Akuma. Here, they adopt a more humanoid appearence and have their bodies covered in some kind of armor. They are practically identical except for the shape of their helmet, their hairstyle (if they have any hair) and the shape of their shoulder pads. They are more bloodthirsty and vicious than the Level 2, very aggresive and tend to even turn on their Akuma partners when they run out of humans to kill. Their Dark Matter abilities are even stronger than the ones of the Level 2, with some of them able to manipulate gravity or disintegrate matter. They also have the ability to merge into a Giant Akuma with great firepower, at the cost of becoming very slow.

After the attack of Lulu Bell on the Order, a new type of Level 3 seems to have appeared, looking like huge, bulky humanoids with horns who rely on brute strength rather than ability. They all look the same except for being colored differently.

  • Blood Knight: Even for the standards of the Akuma, these guys are always ecstatic for a good battle. Eshi is probably the most glaring example.
  • Dumb Muscle: The bulky class are strong machines who simply charge towards the enemy hoping to take them down with brute force alone, not using any kind of tactics or special abilities unlike the first type.
  • Elite Mook: Until the appearence of the Level 4, they were the highest ranking Akuma available, its just that most (if not all) of them were stationed in Japan at the beginning of the story. Once the Exorcists grew stronger enough to kill Level 2 Akuma easily, the Earl decided to unleash them, and, nowadays, they form the bulk of the Akuma army.
  • Fusion Dance: Their transformation into the aforementioned Giant Akuma requires the combination of several level 3s. The first time they display this it was under the command of the Earl, but it seems they have the ability to do it themselves without any given order, as seen when the Generals appeared to fight them during Lulubell's attack on the European headquarter, when the Akuma, seeing that the Generals outmatched them, fused willingly to have more chances to beat them (it failed spectacularly).
  • Humanoid Abomination: They all have a humanoid shape, but they are at least 2 meters tall, are covered in a grotesque-looking demonic armor and their helmet sports what can be called a nasty Nightmare Face (that hides the face they had as a Level 1), with multiple eyes included.
  • Lean and Mean: The first variation of Level 3s are lanky, thin machines of carnage, though surprisingly tough despite what their slender built can suggest at first.
  • Monstrous Cannibalism: They kill and eat Akuma of lesser levels when they are bored and/or they don't have humans to kill. It is as bad as it sounds. They can also eat other Level 3s, though, these ones being stronger and tougher, are more difficult to take down.
  • Taken for Granite: One unspecified Level 3 that comes with Lulu Bell to retrieve the Akuma Egg has an ability that creates a substance that petrify its targets in case of landing. Bookman briefly falls victim to this ability and is turned into stone, but luckily for him No Ontological Inertia returns him to normal when the Generals appear and destroy all of the Level 3 around.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: The new Level 3s who appear after the invasion of the Order are hulking brutes with greath physical strength, but unlike the first variant they don't seem to have any noteworthy Dark Matter ability, which makes them easy prey to any decently strong Exorcist.
  • Villain Decay: Just like the Level 2 before them, they started as incredibly formidable enemies (it took everything Lenalee had to defeat Eshi, Allen needed the true power of his Innocence to kill Thread, and Cross Unit's was unable to harm the Giant Akuma, needing the Tiedoll's unit to destroy them), but as time passed, defeating them became no harder than beating a Level 2 (though the Level 3 can be tough to fight in great quantities, as it happened during Lulubell's invasion of the Black Order, where Allen struggled to defeat them after being tired from fighting some others).

    Eshi

Eshi

Voiced by: Ryūsei Nakao (JP), Ian Ferguson (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/_198.jpg

The first Level Three Akuma to appear in the series. The first he does as an impressive fighter, is defeating and nearly killing Bookman and Lavi easily, then enters a long battle with Lenalee costing her long hair and loses. He was formerly a Japanese artist.

  • Blood Knight: Perhaps one of the biggest one of the series, rivaling General Socalo. Eshi loves to fight, and he gets very disappointed if his opponent gets taken down easily. In fact, he looked happy, rather than surprised or frustrated, when (the previously thought drowned) Lenalee emerged from the sea ready to re-start their fight.
  • Catchphrase: "Title!", which he prefaces all of his sentences with.
  • Chain Pain: His gravity-based abilities manifests into the shape of skull-patterned chains that increase the gravity of anything they touch. There's no escape from this ability, and the only way of stopping the effect of the chains is killing Eshi.
  • Did Not See That Coming: He never expected Lenalee's Iron Shackles to have the weight of a meteorite, let alone that she would use his own gravity chains to increase the weight of the attack. This proves to be his undoing.
  • Elite Mook: Possibly. After his defeat, the other Level 3's succumb almost immediately to Monster Threat Expiration.
  • Evil Redhead: A vicious Akuma with orange hair.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Very theatrical and dramatic in his actions, probably a hint of his previous life as an artist. This only accentuates more the more excited he gets.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Has a deep voice even for his voice actor's standards.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: Ryūsei Nakao is famous for this, but the deep pitch that the anime uses for Eshi (like all the Akuma) makes his voice even raspier.
  • Finger Framing: He has the habit of framing his opponents with his fingers like if he's evaluating them as models for a painting. Given his past as an artist, it makes sense.
  • Gravity Is Purple: His gravity chains are depicted with a purplish aura. Justified in this case, as Eshi's ability comes from the Earl's Dark Matter, and Dark Matter is portrayed as purple in color.
  • Gravity Master: His main ability is the power to affect the gravity of anything the chains he creates surround. It is a troublesome ability, but, in the sea, where there is no place to hide and there is only water below your feet, it becomes much more terrifying.
  • Hero Killer: Though he doesn’t commits the deal personally, the effect from his gravity chains in the ship of Anita allows his Level 2 partners hidden in the clouds to kill the entire crew in the ship (except for the Exorcists, Choazi and both his brother and friend), including Anita and Mahoja. Also, he comes very close to killing Lenalee himself by drowning her in the sea.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Is defeated by his own chains used against him by Lenalee.
  • Humiliation Conga: Averted, He's the only notable Level 3 that is not reduced to a humiliating state.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: After struggling for a good time, the Iron Shackles eventually pierce him, then he gets disintegrated by the weight of the attack, finally dying.
  • Mad Artist: His soul used to belong to an artist and he retains something of that person's personality. This is best exemplified in the ways he defeats his opponents, trying to kill them in dramatic ways, then adding a title for the scene like if he was coming with a title for a drawing, such as "The Old Man and the Moon" (after dropping an unconscious Bookman from the sky) or "The Saint Who Fell Into The Darkness" (after drowning Lenalee into the sea).
  • Sadist: While he's beating Lenalee towards the end of their fight, at some point he tells her that he wants her to scream in pain and beg for her life (because she was silent while he was hitting her).
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Although he is destroyed in the same arc in which he appears, he manages to force Lenalee to overwork her Innocence in order to defeat him, crippling her for the rest of the arc and the next one and starting the evolution process of her Innocence.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Not applied to Eshi himself, but rather, using his gravity-based ability, he can make others suffer this while fighting in bodies of water, like in the ocean.
  • Supernatural Sealing: Can form chains of dark matter that are strong enough to seal away Innocence abilities.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: After spending a time fighting Level 2 Akuma (who ended becoming a nuisance at best), the unit of general Cross stumbled against this guy and quickly saw the difference in power between a Level 2 and a Level 3. He trashed both Lavi and Bookman with little effort, almost drowned everyone in Anita's ship with his ability (and the aid of the Level 2s who were situated in the clouds) and forced Lenalee to give her best against him after nearly drowning her in the sea. He was one Hell of a first reminder of the dangers that would await the Exorcists in Japan.

    Thread

Thread

Voiced by: Kentarō Itō (JP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5e90620be57d50_full.jpg

A level 3 that was sent to the Asia branch of the Black Order to retrieve Allen Walker after he goes missing. After causing much destruction and nearly killing Bak and Fou he is defeated by Allen's newly awakened Innocence and destroyed shortly afterwards. His special ability was Threads, which allowed him to create strings of dark matter that slowly ripped his targets body apart molecule by molecule.

  • Assassin Outclassin': While not really sent to kill Allen, instead just capture him, he nonetheless attempts to murder him gleefully at Tyki's orders. He ends destroyed easily by Allen after he unlocks the true power of his Crown Clown, something he triggered by making Allen realize he also wanted to save the souls of the Akuma.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: One of his secondary abilities allowed him to create energy blades on his arms with the same effect as his threads.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: After dominating the fight against the Asia branch for several minutes he is caught off guard by Allen's newly awakened Crown Clown and has arms, legs and lower torso completely ripped off.
  • Laser Blade: In addition to his string ability he was able to create dark matter energy blades for close quarters combat.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: He's sent to China in order to kidnap Allen and bring him captive to the Noah. However, his very arrival is exactly what Allen needed in order to awake the true power of his Innocence, which ends not only destroying him, but also making Allen return to the battle with a stronger Innocence and remain a hindrance for the Earl.
  • Razor Floss: An extremely nasty variant. Since he is a level 3 Akuma he doesn't need to ensnare or cut victims with his dark matter threads. Instead, he merely needs to shoot them with it, causing their body to slowly be ripped apart on a molecular level.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Like Eshi, he's little more than a throwaway villain and only appears in a few chapters before being defeated, but his presence is what allows Allen to not only restore his destroyed Innocence, but also unveil its true form and power.

    Paris Level 3

Paris Level 3

Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Kawashima (JP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/level3paris.jpg

A powerful level three akuma that was part of the Paris group that attacked Timothy's orphanage. Despite proving to be a formidable foe against the young exorcist he is caught off guard by one of the newly revealed Third Exorcists and absorbed.

  • Killed Off for Real: Because his body was absorbed by dark matter his soul was consumed with it.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: He looks drastically different from the level three's shown previously, having a much more muscular and simplified design.
  • No-Sell: As a level three akuma he is completely immune to Timothy's possession powers and effortlessly counters his attack.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Unlike Eshi and Thread he isn't shown to have any special abilities beyond raw physical strength.

    Giant Akuma

Giant Akuma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/combinedakuma.png

A middle stage between the Level 3 and 4, these Akuma of huge proportions and humanoid appearence are born from the fusion of several Level 3. They are not very intelligent, but compensate it with their huge size and a monstrous amount of strength. They are able to shoot an attack called Evil Star Gita, which shoots energy beams from their back in all directions.

  • Attack Its Weak Point: Despite their resilience, their head is vulnerable and they are able to be killed if someone hits them there. Of course, the attack has to be powerful enough to harm them.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: While some Level 2 Akuma are quite big, this ones put them to same. They considerably dwarf the tallest building from Edo and are so tall that reaching their heads is a challenge itself.
  • Behemoth Battle: Several of them face General Tiedoll's giant creations during the Japan mission, ending up defeated by them.
  • Body Horror: They have two other faces in their cheeks. Their only purpose seems to make them more unnerving.
    • A more terrifying example, even for Akuma standards, is their transition from Level 3 to 4. To put it into perspective, from the body of the Akuma, a figure resembling a Level 3 will merge ripping its flesh, from which more figures will violently emerge and convulse until forming the shape of a pregnant woman with the number 4 in "her" belly. This is bad enough, but the worst part is the one where the Level 4 borns...
  • Creepily Long Arms: Their arms are as long as they are big. Luckily, they are so slow that they barely use them, relying more on their Evil Star Gita attack to get rid of their enemies.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Receive two spectacular ones at two different times. The first one was in Edo, where General Tiedoll defeated at least 30 of them while waiting for the Exorcists trapped in the Ark. The second was during Lulubell's invasion to the Black Order's headquarters, from part of the General Exorcists, who didn't take a sweat to exterminate a handful of them despite only being three (ironically Tiedoll didn't took part on this one,as he was protecting the scientists who were hurt by the Level 3s).
  • Dumb Muscle: They don't display any intelligence at all and are just the powerhouses of the Earl while facing troublesome enemies.
  • Fusion Dance: They are created after lots of Level 3 Akuma fuses together. They seem to lost any individuality they could had with this, as the Giant Akuma displays no personality at all.
  • Giant Mook: They are this in spades, being ginormous and stronger than the previous seen Akuma, but still falling to any Exorcist strong enough to damage them. Suffice to say, the Generals mopped the floor with them during Lulu Bell's attack on the European headquarter.
  • Humanoid Abomination: While they look more humanoid than the normal Level 3s, they are huge, have no hair at all, have doll-like faces with an expression who looks in constant pain (with two other faces with a similar expression in the same place where their cheeks are) and, lastly, their anatomy is all over the place, being disturbingly thin, with huge arms, and a long neck.
  • Lean and Mean: They are disturbingly slender, and are killer machines programmed to wipe out mankind.
  • Long Neck: They sport a big neck to support those huge heads of them. It makes them look off, to put it lightly.
  • Mighty Glacier: They are this in spades. They posseses a lot of power and are able to cause lots of destruction, but their movements are in return painfully slow, thing that makes them easy targets for elite Exorcists.
  • Monster Is a Mommy: During the transition from Level 3 to Level 4, the figure of a pale pregnant woman emerges from the body of the Giant Akuma, who them gives birth to the Level 4 in question. Is not a very pleasant scene.
  • Otherworldly and Sexually Ambiguous: Their right chest is visibly female, while the left one is flat, possibly indicating it is a male one. This carries over to the Level 4s too. It is possibly a result of being formed with both male and female souls.
  • Rent-a-Zilla: A mechanic colossus born from the union of several, smaller Akuma that the Earl creates to rampage in Edo and crush the Exorcists for daring to attack him in his turf. Later used as a Giant Mook of sorts while facing strong opponents.
  • Super-Toughness: Their armor is so sturdy that normal attacks are unable to harm then, even if they hit their weak spot. As such, only the strongest of Exorcists can destroy them successfully.
  • The Worf Effect: After being a challenge to Lavi, Krory and Bookman, Kanda and Marie manage to kill one of them with relative ease, while Tiedoll later dispatches a group of them without much problems, showing how strong they are compared with Cross's unit. Later they serve to hype the strength of Generals Socalo and Nine, who take care of them without breaking a sweat.

Level 4 Akuma

    Level 4 in General

All of them voiced by: Shizuka Ishigami (JP, Hallow)

The fourth, least common and (so far) last stage of the Akuma. Apparently born from the Giant Akuma under unknown methods, they are the Akuma with the most human appearence, resembling a twisted-looking angel. Unlike Level 2s and 3s, they all look and sound the same, and they also lack the specific abilities that the previous stages possessed. They are however far stronger than their congeners, with a power rivalling that of a Noah and an Exorcist who has surpassed the Critical Point. Though they still obey the Earl and the Noah, they don't necesarily obey the Skulls now, making them a potential threat for their allies as well.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Due their rarity, it is not known how they are created. Do they always come from the Giant Akuma? Can a Level 3 evolve without the need to fuse with other Akuma? Is their soul fused with the other ones that the Giant Akuma harbored, or it is a single one like with previous Akuma? So far, nothing has been revealed to the matter.
  • Bald of Evil: They have not hair at all, and are the most deadly Akuma to the date.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: In Hallow, their irises are depicted as black, compared with the normal ones the Level 4 that appeared in the European's headquarter of the Black Order had in the first anime.
  • Bright Is Not Good: In contrast to the duller and monochromatic color palette of the first anime, Hallow portrays them with brighter and more vibrant colors.
  • Creepy Child: While they are not really children (their soul may belong to an adult, assuming the soul of the Akuma still has any individuality left after being fused into the Giant Akuma and is not the result of a soul amalgam, of course), they look and sound like one, and, combined with their doll-like body and lack of any distinct features, makes them more unsettling.
  • Creepy High-Pitched Voice: Unlike the rest of the Akuma phases, who tends to embody Evil Sounds Deep, they have the voices of little children. Make no mistake, this, combined with their appearance, makes them creepy as Hell.
  • Elite Mook: Basically an upgraded version of Level 3s. If a Level 3 is able to go toe-to-toe with a relatively strong Exorcist, a Level 4 is equal to a General in strength. So far, they have not replaced the Level 3s as the most numerous integrants of the Akuma army, but the Earl at least has 10 of them at his command... Time will tell if they will become as abundant as the Akuma of lower levels...
  • Fat Bastard: They sport a noticeable pot belly, possibly as a twisted way to imitate a cherub, that are often portrayed as being chubby and plump. Disturbingly enough, it looks eerily similar to the symptoms of kwashiorkor, a disease caused by an inadequate amount of proteins in the body, that is very present in malnourished children of Third World countries, making them even more horrifying.
  • Four Is Death: The fourth stage an Akuma can reach, and, so far, the most lethal and destructive of them all, with a single one able to obliterate half of the headquarters of the European branch of the Black Order, kill lots of Red Shirts with simple attacks and incapacitate the four Generals and Allen for some minutes. The most terrifying part is that, apparently, they are an stepping stone for something more powerful and terrible...
  • Holy Halo: They have a halo above their heads, accentuating their angel motif. The "holy" part, however, is more debatable...
  • Humanoid Abomination: By far the most humanoid of the Akuma stages, it is also the most terrifying and powerful. If anything, their anthropomorphic look make them creepier and disturbing, with the Uncanny Valley being in full display.
  • Irony: The strongest stage of the creatures named Akuma (AKA the Devil himself) is the one that has the appearance of an angel (a pretty disturbing one, however).
  • Light Is Not Good: They are primarily white colored, have an angelic appearance and sport a halo, but they are the most terrifying and powerful of the Akuma.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Unlike the first Akuma of their respective levels who appeared in the series (or at least, the firsts that Allen fought), the audience doesn't gets the pleasure to see the soul of the first Level 4 who appears in the series, but it is bad enough to cause Allen to puke.
  • Our Angels Are Different: They all look like an horrifying parody of a cherub, with a look that looks like if someone mixed a child, a doll and an angel, resulting in a machine with the shape of an angelic being and a groslly bloated stomach. They also serve and obey to the closest thing the series has to Satan and are perfectly capable to doom mankind.
  • Otherworldly and Sexually Ambiguous: Just like the Giant Akuma, the right side of their chest looks like the one of a woman, while their left one is masculine. Unlike other cases, they avert Barbie Doll Anatomy and display nipples, though they seem to lack genitals.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: They sport red eyes, and you don't want to run into one of these guys in a dark alleyway.. or just in any place, really. By the time Hallow aired, they also mix this with Black Eyes of Crazy.
  • Super-Scream: Level 4s can use an ear piercing scream to temporarily disable opponents, including General level Exorcists.

    Black Order Level 4

Black Order Level 4

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/level4headquarters.png

The first level 4 Akuma to appear in the series that was created at the European Black Order HQ in the aftermath of Lulu Bell's invasion. It proceeded to slaughter friend and foe alike and killed dozens (perhaps hundreds) of Black Order personnel before finally being killed by Allen, Lenalee and Cross.

  • Arc Villain: Of the Black Order Invasion arc, replacing Lulu Bell after she escapes from the Black Order's European headquarters after the Akuma Egg is destroyed. It remains as the main threat of the arc till its end.
  • Body Horror: It swells up like a deformed balloon after being hit by about a half dozen innocence bullets courtesy of General Cross.
  • Climax Boss: It's the final enemy that the Exorcists confront in the first anime. Though it is finally defeated after a long battle, it's clear that the war against the Earl is far from finishing.
  • Dirty Coward: When Cross gets the upper hand on it by delivering several crippling shots of Innocence to its body it attempts to flee through a roof hatch. Luckily, Allen and Lenalee manage to deal the final blow before it can make its escape.
  • For the Evulz: It only kills the Skulls who were trapped in the barrier of the Black Order (who by all means were its allies) because it was having too much fun.
  • Giggling Villain: It is constantly giggling when it is having fun. In fact, the very first sign that it is about to born is a chilling giggle that echoes around the Black Order's headquarters.
  • Hate Sink: Katsura Hoshino mentioned in an interview that she intended the Level 4 to come as a despicable and vile character. As such, unlike other Akuma before it, it receives no sympathy from anybody (not even from Allen) when it is finally killed.
  • Hero Killer: One of the most terrifying enemies the Black Order has faced yet and also one of the most deadly. Before being destroyed it wipes out several members of the organization, including Tupp Dopp, who had been transformed into a Skull at the time.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Allen and Lenalee manage to hurt it for the first time by impaling it, having the later stomping the Exorcism sword of the former into it. Its great stamina, however, allows it to stand the blow (though giving it an unbearable pain due the Innocence). Ironically, it is finally defeated when Allen and Lenalee pierce it again using the combined power of their Innocences when it tried to escape the Black order's headquarters after being fatally wounded by Cross.
  • Knight of Cerebus: The arc where it appears wasn't precisely lighthearted, being one dealing with a Noah attacking the Black Order's European headquarters and involving the death and painful transformation of many of the staff of the Black Order, but its appearence manages to make things even darker, causing the demise of even more people (including Tupp), destroying the headquarters and mopping the floor with most of the Exorcists fighting at the time.
  • Off with His Head!: After its body is destroyed by Allen and Lenalee, its severed head lands near Cross and taunts him that even though it was defeated, the Earl still has several other forces and will ultimately destroy them. Cross responds by "accidentally" blowing him up with a final shot from Judgement.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Fitting its appearence, the Level 4 has a childish behaviour, toying with its enemies without taking them seriously, playing with them in mortal games instead of killing them as fast as possible, killing its own allies for fun without a second thought, and has a tantrum after Allen and Lenalee manage to corner it.
  • Rasputinian Death: To take it down, it was necessary for Allen and Lenalee (with her new, stronger Dark Boots) to impale it multiple times, have Cross shooting it with several bullets from his Judgement (causing its body to inflate grotesquely), to finally have Allen and Lenalee piercing it again when it tried to flee, causing its body to explode. That still didn't kill it, as its head still remained and was able to taunt Cross for a few seconds before he finally destroys it for good by blowing up its head.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Just like Eshi before it, it is destroyed in the same arc of its debut, but it is precisely its terrible presence what allows Lenalee to finally return to the battlefield with her new, stronger Innocence after spending the later half of the Edo arc and the entirety of the Noah's Ark arc unable to fight. Its unusual sighting also ends up giving the Black Order additional information about the life cycle of the Akuma.
  • Team Killer: It executes several trapped Skulls despite them being servants of the Earl as well. Afterwards, the Level 4 excuses its actions by claiming that it got a "bit excited."
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Unlike the Level 2 and 3 Akuma, the Level 4 doesn’t possess any special Dark Matter ability, being limited to just physical strength, Dark Matter blasts and his piercing scream. However, his strength, speed and potential for destruction are so great it simply doesn’t need a special ability to be a threat.

    Paris Level 4

Paris Level 4

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lvl_3_hallow.png

A level 4 Akuma that was deployed to Paris along with some lower level Akuma to capture Timothy Hearst and retrieve his Innocence. It had a somewhat different appearance and personality to the previous level 4 (especially in the anime) though it shared many of the same abilities and powers. It was killed through the combined efforts of Allen and Kanda.

  • Arc Villain: Of the Phantom Thief G arc, being the biggest threat of the arc and the "leader" of the Akuma group who attacks Timothy's orphanage.
  • An Arm and a Leg: It loses one of each during its fight with Allen and Kanda, which barely slows it down.
  • Gatling Good: It had the ability to transform both of its arms into high-powered gatling guns.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Allen and Kanda finally manage to finish it off by stabbing it through the head and torso with their swords and then shredding it to pieces.
  • Mook Lieutenant: It is shown leading a small group of lower level akuma to assist it in attacking the orphanage.
  • Nested Mouths: It was shown to be able to summon a small gun from its mouth in this manner.
