"Humanity came close to being decimated by the demons. But just one mage saved humankind. He was known thereafter as the Wizard King and became a legend."

The Wizard King is the leader and the strongest member of the Clover Kingdom's Magic Knights. The current titleholder is the 28th Wizard King Julius Novachrono. The title was given in honor of the first Wizard King Lumiere Silvamillion Clover, who saved the country from a demon.

    In General
  • All There in the Manual: A bonus volume , Volume 23.5, reveals Garandros, Funnybunny and Avalaché's background story, Freudian Excuses and deaths which were never mentioned in the Sword of the Wizard King movie itself. Appropriately, they're all framed as tragic Anti-Villains.
  • The Archmage: Whoever holds this title is considered as the strongest mage of the Clover Kingdom and the military commander of all the Magic Knights in the kingdom with its captains answering to him or her in the chain of command.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: The only requirement to become Wizard King is through merit as Julius Novachrono explained to Asta and Yuno.
Julius: People want just one thing from the Wizard King... Achievements that mark you as the strongest. Produce results. Devote yourselves to building a reputation... That's everything. No one who's unable to do that could ever stand at the top...!
  • Big Good: As the Wizard King, the holder of the title must lead the Magic Knights against powerful threats to protect the Clover Kingdom. The latest two Wizard Kings, on the other hand, rebelled against the Kingdom somewhere down the line and made themselves formidable threats against the Kingdom they're supposed to protect in the first place.
  • Dub Name Change: Sometimes, the Wizard King title is translated as "Magic Emperor" as the original Japanese text for the title 魔法帝 (Mahōtei) can be translated as such. Official translations have all used "Wizard King".
  • Failure Knight: Of the Wizard Kings seen in the story, none of them fully accomplished their goals, with the latest two outright turning/turned out to be mass annihilators who rebelled against the kingdom they're supposed to protect.
  • The Force Is Strong with This One: The predecessor Wizard Kings possesses immense amounts of mana that surpasses the nine Magic Knight captains.
  • Heroism Equals Job Qualification: As Julius points out, you become Wizard King by building a reputation in which people can trust you through producing results in serving the kingdom. If you're unable to do that you can't stand at the top.
  • Legacy Character: The Wizard King is a title that has been passed down for centuries from the first Wizard King Lumiere Silvamillion Clover to Julius Novachrono the 28th holder.
  • Military Mage: The Wizard King is the commander of the nine Magic Knight squads in Clover Kingdom and its captains answer to them. All prior Wizard Kings except the first have served in the country's Magic Knights, accumulating merit and achievements before being crowned the title.
  • One-Man Army: The holder of the Wizard King title is this as demonstrated with Julius Novachrono capable of taking down countless enemy mages by himself for example. Former Wizard King Princia Funnybunny is stated to be able to conquer an entire country by herself, with she and four of her cohorts proving enough to require the entire Clover Kingdoms military might to stop.
  • She Is the King: Despite the title being Wizard King there have been female Wizard Kings, such as Princia Funnybunny whose strength even amongst Wizard Kings in history is renowned. It's stated that Mereoleona could have easily become Wizard King had she desired the position.
  • World's Best Warrior: The holder of the Wizard King title must be this, the most powerful mage to be acknowledged and respected by the Clover Kingdom through hard work and merit.

Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga), Episode 1 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Light

"I'm positive that this will become a world where our peoples can live side by side, as friends!! We'll be able to understand each other!"

A prince of the Clover Kingdom five centuries ago chosen by a four-leaf clover who later became known as the First Wizard King. Lumiere was interested in developing magic tools to achieve equality. He was friends with Licht, but had to fight against him due to his transformation into a demon.

Lumiere uses Light Magic, forming bursts and blades of light.

  • The Ace: His magic and talent were noted to be amazing even among royalty, with his mana stated to be even more powerful than the elves and having the brilliance to invent many magical tools with the help of Secre. His feat of defeating the demon that threatened the Clover Kingdom established the very title of the Wizard King.
  • All-Loving Hero: He's incredibly kind, wanting to help the commoners of his kingdom and working with Licht in hope that humans in the kingdom would peacefully coexist with the elves. Although his family didn't like his progressive ideals, this didn't bother him.
  • The Archmage: Even among the royalty of the Clover Kingdom, his magic was far more powerful than anyone else. He had a four-leaf clover grimoire, bestowed on exceptional mages, and rare, powerful Light Magic. His defeat of the demon that attacked the kingdom established the very title of the Wizard King.
  • An Arm and a Leg: His arm is cut off during the fight against Zagred. Secre reattaches it using her sealing magic.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: He was a prince of the Clover Kingdom and uses Light Magic, having blond hair, blue eyes, and wearing a white and red double-breasted jacket and pants with a blue cape.
  • Bash Brothers: Lumiere and Licht were best friends when they were alive, which shows when they fight together to defeat Zagred.
  • Best Friends-in-Law: He was Licht's best friend, with Licht engaged and expecting a child with his sister Tetia. The two of them tak about how the mariage will join their families and make them brothers.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a great guy, but he's also one of the most powerful humans to have ever been born.
  • BFS: He can create gigantic swords of light to fire at enemies.
  • Big Good: He and Licht share this position as they return five centuries later to battle Zagred. The first Wizard King and the leader of the elves unify everyone against the devil. He's also truly this unlike his seen sucessors, who all degenerated into threats against the Kingdom (or are threats against the Kingdom in disguise), since he never defects and retains loyal to the end.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Defeating a demon-transformed Licht left Lumiere heavily injured and near death, forcing Secre to seal him as a statue to be brought back at the right time. Due to being unsealed in an incomplete state, his body shatters shortly after Zagred is defeated.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Gender-Inverted, with Secre being the distanced, stoic Brooding Girl to Lumiere's nice, idealistic Gentle Boy. She was assigned to be his servant, thinking he would be arrogant like the other royalty, but he turned out to be very kind, to her surprise. Lumiere's recognition of her magical potential, combined with his goal of equality, inspired Secre's deep loyalty to him.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Like Julius, he's a kind person who's also a geek in magic. He researched tech used to enhance the magic of everyone else besides the nobles.
  • Combination Attack: He can combine his Light Magic with Licht's Sword Magic to give allies a protective aura that boosts their speed.
  • Cool Crown: He wears a neat gold one with a green gem in the middle.
  • Domain Holder: Lumiere can use Mana Zone, controlling the mana in the area around him. He uses it to increase his spells' power and range, forming many concentrated bursts of light.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: He has blond hair and uses powerful Light Magic.
  • Elemental Speed: Light Magic is said to be the fastest form of magic, and he can envelop himself in a beam of light to move at incredible speed, going from near Hage Village to the Shadow Palace in the Royal Capital in short time.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Only known by his title as the First Wizard King in the present day.
  • Fairy Tale Motifs: Secre and Prince Lumiere are based on the swallow and prince from The Happy Prince. Secre turned Lumiere into a statue with the magic stones to save his life, at the cost of turning into a bird for five centuries. Here, however, she gives the statue of Lumiere the magic stones to unseal him in order to defeat Zagred. And despite her pleas, he lets her go to live out the rest of her life as he crumbles away.
  • Famed In-Story: As the one who saved the Clover Kingdom and inspired the title of Wizard King, Lumiere became a legend whose actions inspired many Magic Knights to attain his position.
  • Famous Ancestor: Is this to the Silva and Vermillion royal families due to his family name being Silvamillion. As he dies, he's thankful that he got to meet his descendants, Noelle and Mimosa.
  • The Force Is Strong with This One: When he's unsealed by Secre, Finral notes that he has a calm and powerful mana greater than even the elves.
  • Gadgeteer Genius:
    • With Secre's sealing magic, he created magical tools with the goal of benefiting commoners and peasants. This backfired when Zagred used his same tool to massacre the elves.
    • Centuries later, Julius uses one of his tools, which he named Swallowtail after Secre, to store his Time Magic and ultimately save his life.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: Wears primarily white and gold clothing on top of wielding Light Magic of the same colours. He's also a legendary figure to the Clover Kingdom, being Asta and Yuno's inspiration to become the Wizard King.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: Wears a gold crown, jewelry, his magic has a golden aura on top of being the incredibly powerful Light Magic with all the power that being the first Wizard King entails.
  • Go Out with a Smile: He smiles as his body crumbles away, thanking Asta for keeping his ideals alive, grateful to have met his descendants, and encouraging Secre to live on.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon:
    • He uncovered Zagred's plan to massacre the elves. Secre then sealed him as a statue to save his life, believing him to be the future's hope. Inspired by him, Secre loyally served him over the next five hundred years by watching over Licht's grimoire and observing the conflict between the elves and humans, unsealing him just before the final battle with Zagred.
    • As the First Wizard King, he helped establish the title of the strongest Magic Knight in the Clover Kingdom. His ideals for equality live on through Julius and Asta.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He has bright blonde hair and desired to help the commoners in the kingdom and establish peace and understanding with the elves, unlike many of the aristocrats of his time.
  • Hard Light: He attacks using arrows and sword projectiles made of light.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Licht was his best friend. As the leader of his own people, and the owner of a four leaf grimorie, the two of them were, in Secre's words, "peers".
  • Implied Love Interest: To Secre. Secre refers to him as "my prince" and he was the first one to acknowledge her potential. As a result, she was very devoted to him, using Forbidden Magic to keep him alive at the cost of being turned into a bird for 500 years and willing to follow him to the afterlife after the battle with Zagred. However, it never is confirmed whether or not their relationship was romantic and he dies shortly after he's unsealed.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: He has bright blue eyes, and was an idealistic man who, like the elves, ended up being a victim of Zagred's plans.
  • Interspecies Friendship: He was friends with Licht, who even was to marry his younger sister Tetia.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: He was forced to kill Licht, his best friend, who had transformed into a demon using the magic stones to prevent Zagred from taking over his body.
  • Laser Blade: He mostly uses his Light Magic to form giant blades of light.
  • Last Request: Before he truly dies, he asks Secre to watch the current generation of Magic Knights' futures and ideals play out, hoping for her to achieve her true potential and live on. She fulfills this by joining the Black Bulls.
  • Light 'em Up: He uses Light Magic, creating bursts and swords made of light.
  • Light Is Good: His name is Lumiere, French for light, he uses Light Magic, and was the First Wizard King, hoping to end discrimination against commoners and peasants and famed for saving the Clover Kingdom from a rampaging demon.
  • Living Statue: He is this after becoming unsealed as a statue by Secre. When Zagred cuts his arm off, it doesn't even bleed, and cracks begin appearing on his body as he comes closer to dying.
  • Meaningful Name: His name, "Lumiere", is French for "light".
  • Mercy Kill: He does this for Licht, who turned into a demon to prevent Zagred from taking over his body and requested Lumiere to do so.
  • Nice Guy: In the past, the First Wizard King was very kind and polite, creating magic tools to bridge the disparity between the lower-class and nobility. He was the first person to acknowledge Secre's worth and encouraged her to develop her Sealing Magic.
  • No Body Left Behind: His body crumbles away in the aftermath of the battle with Zagred.
  • Older Than They Look: Lumiere's appearance can be taken for a kid, but he's actually 25 years old and sealed 500 years ago.
  • Our Founder: He is famed as the first Wizard King for defeating a demon and saving the kingdom. Statues of him include the one atop the giant skull near Hage Village and the Magic Knights Entrance Exam arena. This is later averted because it's not a statue atop the demon skull. It is the Wizard King.
  • Precursor Hero: He was the first Wizard King and the best friend of the elf tribe leader Licht, with whom he wished for a future of coexistence between elves and humans. Together, they foiled Zagred's plan to gain a body and five-leaf grimoire, and return five centuries later to work with the Magic Knights of the present-day to finally defeat him.
  • Primary-Color Champion: He wears a red and white jacket trimmed with gold and a blue cape. He was also the first Wizard King and a advocate for equality and peace between the elves and humans.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He lacked the snobbery and greed of other Clover Kingdom royals, and deilberately judged everyone by their own merits. This is a paraphrasing of some of his decisions as a prince.
    • Secre's magic is only good for "sealing"? That sounds cool, let's investigate its possibilities.
    • Everyone has different talents at magic. I'll invent magic items to help them develop it, and bridge the gap between commoners and nobility.
    • The leader of the elf tribe and I have much in common. We'll work together, instead of against each other.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: He was the prince of the Clover Kingdom and a powerful mage who developed magic tools with Secre to help the commoners and peasants in the Clover Kingdom. His family, on the other hand, disliked his ideals, which didn't bother him. Immediately after being unsealed, he goes to help fight against Zagred.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: For the longest time, it's assumed that he died prior to the start of the story. By the time of Chapter 203, however, it is revealed that he was actually sealed in stone for 500 years by Nero/Secre until he's freed and awakened again by the magic stones.
  • Storm of Blades: He can form multiple giant blades of light, which he used to bind a demon-transformed Licht.
  • Strong and Skilled: Finral describes his magical power as quiet and powerful, greater than even the reincarnated elves', and had the skill with it to use the rare technique of Mana Zone to control the mana in the surrounding environment, as well as form his magic into a myriad of constructs such as blades and arrows.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: He had sealed his powerful Light Magic in a magic tool as part of his experiments involving Secre's magic. Zagred later convinced the Royals to use this magic tool to steal mana from the elves and reinforce his copy light magic to make it look like it's from Lumiere, framing him as having betrayed the elves.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Despite the tension between humans and elves, he believed that someday the two races could understand each other and live together in peace. Sadly, Zagred took advantage of the other royals' desire for power and paranoia to kill the entire elf tribe.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Shortly after being unsealed by Secre, he only has a limited amount of time, which he makes the most of to help defeat Zagred. He crumbles away shortly afterwards.
  • World's Strongest Man: He was the first Wizard King and the strongest mage of his era, defeating a transformed Licht and saving the entire kingdom. When unsealed by Secre even in a weakened state, Finral describes his magic as quiet and powerful, surpassing even the reincarnated elves.

  • All There in the Manual: Bonus material indicates that she was a former member of the Blue Roses before ascending to Wizard King.
  • Blood Knight: She mostly hides it under a stoic mask but she's thrilled to fight strong opponents. When she encounters someone as strong as Mereleona, she's visibly excited and happy to give it her all.
  • Chess Motifs: Her Legion Magic lets her create magical soldiers in the shape of chess pieces, and her Grimoire has a chessboard pattern on it.
  • Coat Cape: She wears a black coat with white fur lining draped on her shoulders.
  • Commissar Cap: She wears a peaked cap on her head, that, along with her uniform and sword, showcases a strong military image.
  • Co-Dragons: She serves as this to Conrad Leto, alongside Jester and Edward.
  • Dark Action Girl: A resurrected female Wizard King who shares the goal of destroying the Clover Kingdom and goes toe-to-toe with Mereoleona.
  • The Dreaded: She is this as the people feared her strength even though she served as the 11th Wizard King to protect Clover Kingdom in her generation.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: From a member of a fallen noble family to the 11th Wizard King whose strength is feared by all.
  • Hidden Buxom: After sustaining Clothing Damage, it's shown that Princia has a very large bust in additon to being one of the strongest female mages in the history of Clover Kingdom.
  • Humongous Mecha: Her strongest spell has her combine countless Legion Magic soldiers into one giant one with herself in the center controlling it, using it when Mereoleona uses her Hellfire Incarnate.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: At first it seems like she's a swordswoman and will primarily fight with her saber. In reality, she uses the sword as a litmus for the strength of her opponents. Once Mereleona destroys it in their fight, Princia shows that she's in no way at a disadvantage and just starts throwing haymakers. Her true fighting style is pure martial arts while tactically using her extremely potent spells to overwhelm her opponent.
  • Impoverished Patrician: She came from a fallen noble family whose assets were taken by greedy royals. Due to being harassed over her family's fallen status, Princia decided to fight for those oppressed by royalty and joined the Magic Knights as a member of Blue Rose Knights squad.

  • Lady of War: Gives this impression in her fights, being dignified and composed even as she steamrolls her opponents. She sheds this image and shows herself to be a fully fledged Blood Knight once she finds a Worthy Opponent in Mereleona.
  • Lonely at the Top: Thinks to herself that she would not have been so lonely if Mereoleona had been around during her time, as her strength made her feared by her subjects and led to generals hiding the truth that the people of her family's land were taken hostage so she could continue fighting in the frontlines during the war against the Diamond Kingdom, leading to her family's deaths.
  • Mook Maker: Her Legion Magic is this as she summons an army of chess-motif soldiers and deploy them on the battlefield. She also uses them as a way to test her opponents if they are strong before fighting them herself.
  • One-Woman Army: She is this as Conrad stated that she can conquer an entire country by herself and her Legion Magic.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She is always shown frowning, giving her a fierce and commanding appearance. She goes full ballistic once she manages to find a Worthy Opponent in Mereleona.
  • Red Is Heroic: When she was alive, her red attire and hair going along with her being the country's ruler. Shifts more into Red Is Violent given her role in the movie, even displaying Blood Knight tendencies.
  • Smurfette Principle: Of the resurrected Wizard Kings she's the only female one, as well as the only known, named female former Wizard King.
  • Super-Strength: She exhibits this in her battle with Mereleona, knocking her around with extreme force and causing massive destruction once she starts getting serious.
  • The Stoic: She holds a firm facial expression. Once she manages to get a good fight it's shown that this is mostly due to boredom as she goes full Slasher Smile once challenged, as exemplified in her fight against Mereleona.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: Despite her fearsome reputation, her rather ridiculous surname doesn't sounds as threatening.
  • World's Strongest Man: Princia is as known as one of the mightiest Wizard Kings on records. She's a warrior who boasts one of the best fighting abilities among all Wizard Kings. As the strongest of the current Magic Knights, Mereleona is the only one who can stand against her in a straight fight.
  • Worthy Opponent: She finds one in Mereleona. She even thanks her for giving her a good fight once she Disappears into Light.

    Jester Garandros

Jester Garandros

Voiced by: Fumiya Takahashi (Japanese), Ben Diskin (English)

Debut: Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King

Magic Attribute: Barrier

The 16th Wizard King and one of the antagonists of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. He has a frivolous demeanor and tends to look down on others but has a cunning and tactical side. Jester uses Barrier Magic to form barriers and weapon constructs.

  • Agent Peacock: Is significantly more flamboyant and jovial than the other Wizard Kings, but still proves capable of battling Yuno, Yami, Fuegoleon and Nozel on even terms for a significant amount of time (albeit the latter three were running on fumes at that point. In the end, they didn't even beat him, Asta destroying the Imperial Sword cut off the power keeping him alive.
  • Ambition Is Evil: During his time as 16th Wizard King, he planned to conquer the kingdoms of Heart, Spade and Diamond and assimilate them with Clover Kingdom which would unify the entire continent under one banner. Unfortunately, he never gets to fulfill his goal due to a trap made by corrupt royals.
  • Barrier Warrior: He uses Barrier magic, although in combat he prefers to shape his barriers into weapons he wields in battle.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He may have a frivolous attitude like a clown but underneath it, he has a calculating and strategic side and proves why he was known as the 16th Wizard King.
  • Blood Knight: It's clearly obvious that he really enjoys a good fight, as best seen during his clash against Yuno, Yami, Nozel, and Fuegoleon.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite his personality, he was made a Wizard King, the top position in the Magic Knights, for a reason in his generation.
  • Co-Dragons: He serves as this to Conrad Leto, alongside Princia and Edward.
  • Faux Affably Evil: "Evil" is hard to call the man, but Jester is shown to be an incredibly playful and joyful individual, but is also incredibly arrogant and looks down upon those who he deems as weak.
  • Interclass Friendship: In spite of being a noble, he befriended another magic knight named Tenor who came from a remote village near the Diamond Kingdom as well as a commoner knight Raid. Despite their social statuses, they became close friends and pushed each other to grow stronger. He was unable to save Tenor when his village was attacked by the Diamond Kingdom, pushing him to become Wizard King. Years later Tenor's village was attacked in a trap set up by Raid, who was actually a spy ordered to assassinate him whom he had to kill.
  • The Juggernaut: He takes on Yuno, Yami, Fuegoleon, and Nozel all by himself. Even after Yami, Fuegoleon, and Nozel combine their magics into a combination spell and Yuno attacks him afterwards, it's still not enough to defeat him and he stops using his magic to maintain the fortress to go all out. While Princia is defeated by Mereoleona and Edward by the Black Bulls, Jester is still fighting by the time they all Disappear Into The Light.
  • Magic Knight: He's a competent swordsman able to evenly clash blades with Yami of all people.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is Jester because he acts like one.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Has light lilac hair and his Barrier Magic is purple, and as a former Wizard King he's a very powerful mage.
  • Red Baron: He was known as the "Mad King" when he was alive.
  • Smug Smiler: He is quite full of himself especially when looking down on others. He retains this when fighting Yuno, Yami, Fuegoleon and Nozel and having the upper hand against them.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: He's able to shape his barrier into weapons such as swords, arrows, and even a gigantic axe.
  • Take Over the World: He blamed the deaths of his friends on the warring kingdoms, deciding to end the wars between the continent's countries by ruling all four of them, beginning the Conquest of the Four Kingdoms campaign which led some to call him the "Mad King". His growing support for his cause upset the Clover Kingdom's royals, who set a trap that cost him his life.
  • Verbal Tic: "Ah-han?"note
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Suffers Clothing Damage at the hands of Yuno and Yami, exposing his muscular upper body.

    Edward Avalaché

Edward Avalaché

Magic Attribute: Ice Wedge

The 20th Wizard King and one of the antagonists of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. He was the priest of a church and was relied on and adored by the people, wanting to improve the lives of the weak. Edward uses Ice Wedge Magic to form constructs of jagged ice.

  • Badass Preacher: He was a priest before becoming Wizard King, and it shows in his magic, forming a shield adorned with a cross, a gigantic church, and an angelic creature, all made of ice.
  • Biblical Motifs: Is obviously a priest, and many of his spells relate to religion, taking shapes such as churches and angels.
  • Blue Means Cold: Has blue clothing, mana, and a Grimoire and wields the incredibly powerful Ice Wedge Magic.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: He initially didn't want to become a Magic Knight and was perfectly content in being a mere pastor. Unfortunately, when the Diamond Kingdom destroyed his orphanage during a raid, he had to take up the job so he could gain enough strength to protect the weak.
  • Co-Dragons: He serves as this to Conrad Leto, alongside Jester and Princia.
  • Cool Old Guy: He was this to the Clover Kingdom's citizenry, becoming Wizard King at an old age and loved by the people for his kindness.
  • Domain Holder: Edward can use Mana Zone, forming a gigantic church out of ice and dropping the surrounding temperature to absolute zero, freezing even lava and making it hard for his opponents to breathe.
  • Friend to All Children: Despite having great magical potential, he became a priest and took in orphaned children, wanting to help the weak. During the war between the Clover Kingdom and the Diamond Kingdom, the children he took in were killed, causing him to use his magic for the first time to destroy the enemy and joined the Magic Knights to never let another tragedy like that happen again, eventually becoming Wizard King.
  • Good Shepherd: He was a priest in a church who was relied upon and adored by the people of Clover Kingdom.
  • Graceful Loser: He takes his defeat by the Black Bulls very well, calling Noelle a good girl and happy to have met a royal as kind to the weak as her as if she exists then there's hope for this world.
  • Hero Antagonist: Although at odds with Asta and his friends, he fights to carry out his own "justice".
  • An Ice Person: He uses Ice Wedge magic that lets him conjure ice constructs, or even instantly freeze lava.
  • La Résistance: Despite having been loved as the Wizard King during his time, royalty and nobility opposed his goal of equality and had him stripped of his title, leading Edward to form a resistance to put an end to the royalty and nobility in power and eliminate those who opposed him but was eventually captured and executed.
  • Manly Facial Hair: He has a sharp looking thick mustache.
  • Meaningful Name: His surname sounds a lot like "avalanche", a mass of ice falling down a mountain and he uses Ice Wedge Magic.

  • Mythical Motifs: Angels, tying into his Biblical Motifs. He even has several spells that summon angel like figures to fight.
  • Noble Demon: Like the rest of Wizard Kings, Edward is a noble and righteous man, whose goal was to eliminate the boundaries between the three realms. He was kind enough to offer the Black Bulls to surrender as he knows they are good people. He also acknowledges the actions he takes are entirely not justifiable, stating that no man should have the right to take a person's life away from them, but he'll do whatever it takes to ensure he ends the boundaries between commoners and royals.
  • Old Master: Was sixty-six years old as the Wizard King when he died and when he's resurrected to destroy the Clover Kingdom, putting up one hell of a fight against the Black Bulls.
  • Tragic Ice Character: Wields Ice Wedge and like the other Wizard Kings who joined Conrad has very justified reasons to want to destroy the Clover Kingdom considering the Diamond Kingdom blew up the orphanage he sought to protect.

    Conrad Leto

Conrad Leto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/conrad_leto.png

Voiced by: Toshihiko Seki (Japanese), Chris Niosi (English)

Debut: Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King

Magic Attribute: Key

"Stop seeing your dreams in the Wizard King! No one, not even the first Wizard King, has been able to bring revolution to this kingdom. In fact, far from changing the nation, Julius ended up getting beaten by the Elves in the earlier war, and the Clover Kingdom almost faced its doom. They can't protect anything. They can't change anything. Wizard Kings are utterly useless!"

The 27th Wizard King who is the predecessor of Julius Novachrono and the main antagonist of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. He suddenly rebelled against the Clover Kingdom and was sealed by Julius. Conrad uses Key Magic that open and close magical doors able to store magic within.

  • Ability Mixing: Thanks to being able to release many different attributes of stolen magic from his Key Magic doors at once, he can even combine them to unleash powerful compound magic spells.
  • Affably Evil: Mainly towards Asta, who believes that they are quite similar in a way. As such, he always offers Asta to side with him, with promises of making him the next Wizard King. After Asta rejects his offer many times, Conrad decides to fight him, although he states he will regret killing Asta.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Despite all of his actions, Conrad was not entirely evil. In the past, he was a kind and noble man who fought for his people. However, the royalists framed him for a crime, and as a result, his wife and his comrades were killed. He tried to change the country as Wizard King to no avail and his anger over their deaths turned him into a Fallen Hero who plotted to destroy the kingdom. After his defeat by the hands of Asta, he takes his defeat well, wishing for Asta to become the next Wizard King. And in his final moments, he sees the spirits of Edward, Jester, and Princia, sharing a smile with them and afterwards, closes his eyes in peace as he departs peacefully into the afterlife.
  • All for Nothing: He sees his becoming Wizard King as this due to not being unable to change the kingdom's inequality and prejudice during his tenure, seeing the country as corrupt to its core and being a Wizard King as useless. Because of this he wants to use the power of the Imperial Sword to destroy the kingdom and choose which souls deserve to live in his new world.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Not unlike Asta, he was hated even as a child for his thief-like Key Magic. When he found the true potential of his magic as an adult people began to fear him for his power.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Wields every power at his disposal in his final battle with Asta, giving himself a One-Winged Angel form in the process.
  • Animal Motifs: Serpents, with his former squad being called the White Serpents. Fitting given they tend to represent death and rebirth and his goal to wipe out the Clover Kingdom and resurrect those he deems worthy.
  • Badass Cape: Wears a black, white, and furred cape.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: He was originally an All-Loving Hero who was a lot like Asta. After he was framed for a crime and his wife was killed he decided the Clover Kingdom was corrupt to the core and decided to wipe it all out and use magic to bring back to life people he deemed worthy.
  • Big Bad: He's the main antagonist of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, being the mastermind behind the events of the film and is ultimately responsible for reviving the three previous Wizard Kings to assist him.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Played straight in the past, having blue mana and being a beloved hero effective enough to ascend to the title of Wizard King. Subverted in the present after his Face–Heel Turn.
  • Boomerang Bigot: At one point, Conrad openly stated that every Wizard King was effectively useless while being a former Wizard King himself, in addition to all his comrades being former, revived Wizard Kings.
  • Bright Is Not Good: His hair turns white with a yellow patch and he gains multicolored energy wings and orange and green magical power covering his arms when he absorbs the stolen magic power from his Key Magic, all to destroy the Clover Kingdom.
  • Catchphrase: "Never giving up is my magic!".
  • Cool Sword: The Imperial Sword, which contains the magic power and will of all previous Wizard Kings. It meshes particularly well with his Key Magic, such that he can use it to destroy the country.
  • Determinator: His determination rivals even Asta, continuing his plan to destroy the Clover Kingdom after being sealed for a decade. Even when defeated in a fight, he mumbles "not yet" before using forbidden magic to summon a giant meteor to achieve his goal at the cost of his life.
  • Elemental Powers: The magics stolen by his Key Magic mostly being this, unleashing fire, lightning, earth, light, ice, wind, steel, dark, as well as Noelle's water magic.
  • Emerald Power: Several of his attacks use green energy, and as a Wizard King, his power is immense.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Asta, both being victims of discrimination for their magical backgrounds, sharing the same creed that never giving up is their magic, and both's dream being a Clover Kingdom where everyone is treated equally regardless of their status. But while Conrad's loss of his wife and squad thanks to corrupt royalists made him cynical to the point he believed the kingdom was too rotten to change and willing to destroy it, Asta in spite of his hardships remains optimistic that he can change the country for the better. Conrad offers Asta to join him due to their shared ambition but he refuses, with Asta later pointing out it's not just for him to decide to make such a change to the country and he wants to bring change to the country with everyone.
  • Fallen Hero: He was once beloved and respected by the people of Clover Kingdom but suddenly he rebelled against the nation.
  • Foil: He's a taller, older man with dark hair (and a green streak) who's been Wizard King while Asta is a younger, shorter man with light gray hair who aspires to become Wizard King and is still ranked low among all the knights of the Clover Kingdom. And while both Conrad and Asta believe in equality, Conrad's idealism was destroyed by the schemes of the royals while Asta has managed to hold on to his idealism. All things considered, Conrad could basically be seen as Asta's Evil Counterpart.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: His Key Magic manifests as golden keys and proved powerful enough to earn him the title of Wizard King, a power he gladly shows off during the movie.
  • Graceful Loser: He takes his defeat by Asta very well, moved by his determination hoping for him to become the Wizard King and believing that he will be able to create the world without discrimination and prejudice that they both dreamed of before departing for the afterlife.
  • Green and Mean: He has a tuft of green hair atop his head and his black robes are lined with green, and is the main villain of Sword of the Wizard King who wants to destroy the Clover Kingdom.
  • Hero's Evil Predecessor: He is this to Julius Novachrono after turning against Clover Kingdom. His Catchphrase and desire to make a land of equality for everyone makes it clear he was also one to Asta from an idealistic standpoint.
  • Irony: He tries to destroy all the Clover Kingdom's corruption through destroying and recreating it. Little does he and the people of Clover Kingdom know that Julius, or more accurately, Lucius is actually planning on taking his omnicidal plan on a much, worse scale even way before he met him.
  • Jade-Colored Glasses: Like Asta he was once an idealist who believed he could change the country for the better and end its discrimination and prejudice. His wife and squad's death at the hands of the royalists and being unable to enact any change as Wizard King due to the corrupt royalty and nobility caused him to believe that the position of Wizard King is useless, ranting to Asta to stop believing in it.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: A powerful mage and competent unarmed fighter, easily taking down Finral and Sally and fighting Asta with just his legs and fists.
  • Light Is Not Good: Wears a white coat, has a white Grimoire that manifest golden keys and even his One-Winged Angel form is bright and colorful as he wields a white sword against Asta. He's also the Big Bad of the film who wants to destroy the Clover Kingdom.
  • Looks Like Cesare: Conrad wears black robes and has messy black hair, red eyes, and darkened undereyes to differentiate him from his past self before his wife and squad were slaughtered.
  • The Lost Lenore: His beloved wife and vice captain Lovilia along with the rest of his squad the White Serpents were killed in a mission set up by the royalist faction. Her death led him to try to solve the corruption of the Clover Kingdom and failing to do so as Wizard King pushed him to try to destroy and rebuild it using the power of the Imperial Sword. The locket he wears has her picture in it, and he's reminded of what he was fighting for and how far he's fallen when he sees it again just before Asta defeats him.
  • Magic Knight: Creates a blade out of the different absorbed magic power stolen by his Key Magic to fight Asta in a sword clash.
  • Meaningful Name:
  • Omnicidal Maniac: He wants to use the Imperial Sword to destroy the Clover Kingdom and kill everyone in it and then resurrect the souls of the departed whom he believes deserve to live in his new world. He sacrifices his life to use Forbidden Magic to summon a giant meteor to destroy the country so he may save the unreasonably oppressed, believing the kingdom to be rotten to its very core.
  • One-Winged Angel: He absorbs the stolen magical power from his Key Magic turning his hair white and giving him multicolored energy wings when he stops holding back during their battle after Asta refuses to walk the same path as him.
  • Peaceful in Death: After sacrificing his life to use the forbidden magic and being defeated by Asta, Conrad's spirit departs for the afterlife with a smile and his idealism restored, believing that Asta will become the Wizard King and bring change to the Clover Kingdom.
  • Power Gives You Wings: When he uses his keys to "unlock" and use all the powers he accumulated at once, his One-Winged Angel form gives him crown like wings that resemble the four major attributes, fire-red, wind-green, earth-orange, and water-blue. This provides a contrast to Asta's devil-bat-like wings.
  • Power Parasite: His Key Magic lets him steal a mage's magic by locking their grimoire and storing their magic behind one of his magical doors. This thief-like power led him to be mistreated as a child for his magic. He steals Marx's Memory Magic learning all about the Black Bulls and where the Imperial Sword is sealed, and Noelle's Water Magic leaving her unable to use any spells until Asta's Anti-Magic sword touches his grimoire.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Conrad sees the error of his ways when reminded of his late wife and regains his hope after being defeated by Asta, wishing for him to become Wizard King and believing he can create the ideal world they both dreamed of before he passes on to the afterlife.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has red eyes and is an enemy of the Clover Kingdom.
  • Red Is Violent: His aura turns red as he unleashes his Forbidden Magic Dooms Gate in the midst of a Villainous Breakdown.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: His Key Magic spells' names include Janus, the Roman god of gateways and doors.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Was sealed away by Julius ten years ago when he suddenly rebelled against the Clover Kingdom and tried to destroy it using the Imperial Sword. Julius's De-power after the Elves' reincarnation leads to him being unsealed and resuming his plan.
  • Semantic Superpower: His signature magic is Key Magic, which lets him lock and unlock things. He can use it to steal the magic of others by locking their grimoires and unlocking the magic for himself and summon objects from another dimension, up to and including a meteor.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: He derisively tells Asta to give up his dream to become Wizard King because he has lost faith in the office's ability to effect change. When Asta refuses him, he resorts to destroy the whole kingdom by absorbing the remaining magic of the defeated Wizard Kings and doing a desperation spell to annihilate the whole kingdom along with himself.
  • Skeleton Key: He uses Key Magic to unlock and lock magical doors to store magic within the space. Using it he can steal someone's magic by locking their grimoire and unlocking a magical door for himself to use.
  • Straight for the Commander: In order to defeat the other three Wizard Kings, The Magic Knights captains decides to send Asta to head straight for Conrad since he has the Imperial Sword, since the weapon not only has the magic to destroy the Clover Kingdom, but it's also responsible for reviving the Wizard Kings. So if the sword is broken, not only will the kingdom be saved, but the Wizard Kings will return to the afterlife.
  • Strong and Skilled: He and the Wizard Kings he summoned are no joke; they are clearly not just spamming high-level magic to their detriment. Not only is savvy enough to steal and use Marx's magic to infiltrate the laboratory where the mock-sheath used to seal the Imperial Sword just when Asta and several other Magic Knights can reach it (thwarting one of the few options the Magic Knights can use against him), he also had his other subordinates go out of their way to set up layers upon layers of defense to buy time and impale the Imperial Sword onto Licht's demon skull and annihilate the kingdom. He himself is also no slouch in his final battle against Asta, fighting tactically enough to keep him on his toes at all times despite possessing the ultimate counter to any magic. Even his physical skills were top notch, managing to keep pace with a Master Swordsman like Asta.
  • Superpower Lottery: His Key Magic, on top of many unusual applications, lets him steal the spells from other Grimoires, giving him a vast arsenal of spells to work with while depriving his foes of their own. It's telling that only Julius and Asta proved capable of fighting him, and even then it was an uphill fight for both.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He is this with a tuft of turquoise hair.
  • Tears of Blood: He has these as he uses the forbidden spell Doom's Gate to destroy the Clover Kingdom with a giant meteor at the cost of his life.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: After being reminded of his late wife and defeated by him, he sees a new light in Asta, wishing for him to become the Wizard King and believing that he can change the country for the better before peacefully moving on to the afterlife.
Conrad: Did I... lose? Then why... why do I feel so at ease? Now I see it. Asta. Become the Wizard King. Share that warm world of yours with every citizen in this nation. Never giving up is your magic. I know you can...
  • Tragic Villain: Conrad Leto was once a noble and kind king who treated everyone with love and kindness. Unfortunately, his kind deeds were repaid with the royalists framing him for a crime, and as a result, led to the death of his wife and comrades. Their deaths shattered him greatly and he became a ruthless and malicious man. This makes him a tragic and sympathetic man, since just like the First Wizard King and many others, he too was a victim of the corrupted royalists.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: He'll do whatever it takes to create his dream of a Clover Kingdom without prejudice where everyone can laugh and be happy together even if it means destroying the country to its very foundation and everyone in it and bringing back only those he deems worthy, after years of trying to change the nation as Wizard King with no results.
  • Villainous Cheekbones: High cheekbones and high ambition to destroy the Clover Kingdom.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Entering his One-Winged Angel form leaves his chest bare, while his upper body shifts between several colours.
  • We Can Rule Together: More than once he tries to persuade Asta to join his side after noticing how similar Asta was to him in his youth. Conrad even went so far as offering the young magic knight the position of being his successor once he's no longer around. Asta rejected all of Conrad's offers; thus, leaving the former Wizard King no choice but to fight him.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He shares Asta's dream of a Clover Kingdom without discrimination and prejudice. However, he believes the country is too rotten, and plans to create that world through destroying the kingdom and everyone in it and then resurrecting everyone he deems worthy using the Imperial Sword. Asta points out that it's not just up to him to create such an egotistical world with only him laughing and that you're supposed to bring change to the country with everyone from peasants to royals.
