Find a Trope:
openCourting the Fled Demographic
Tantei Team KZ Jiken Note is a Middle Grade Literature series that, by definition, falls to the trope of Fleeting Demographic...
...except it's only for the main series. The series eventually gets two spinoff series that is definitively in the same universe (and things get cross-mentioned), but is definitively written for an older audience (which is evident from being sold as hardback, and from the cover designs). The original series continues, and it's a year away from eligible for Print Long-Runners.
So, the creator is using spinoffs to court the people who already "fled". Is there a trope for it?
Edited by SamCurtopenHijacked A Deceased Account
Is there a trope/YMMV/Trivia page for when a person's account gets hacked after their death?
Edited by Devan2002openPlanned Premature Retirement Anime
I have a case in Asteroid in Love that I'm not sure about. Specifically, it involves a kind of position handover where the office holder deliberately retire from that position earlier than they are required to, so as to watch over their successor for a few months.
The case involves a Japanese School Club, a Club Stub at that. For background, in these organizations the club president is always a Twelfth grader, the Vice-President is always a Eleventh grader, and barring unusual circumstances, the Vice-president will take over the presidency when the President graduates.
So the case is: The vice-president is in that position simply because she's the sole eleventh grader in the club, but her personality isn't really fit for leadership (yet). So the president decided to retire from the presidency half an year early (but maintains as a normal member), mostly to train the vice-president for that role.
This is rather common in Real-Life Japan, and is, in some cases, the reason of some Man Behind the Man / Just the First Citizen arrangements. But does it appear frequent enough in fiction for a trope?
openAttempting To Tempt Fate
A character is aware of the Tempting Fate rule and tries to use it to their advantage by calling upon the universe to give them something...but it inevitably fails.
openDoesn't Use Pronouns
A kind of Strange-Syntax Speaker who doesn't use pronouns even when talking to people, sometimes creating an I'm Standing Right Here effect.

openCompletely Destroying an Antagonist Philosophy with Words?
Say that an antagonist is mocking the protagonist, whether in a fight or just them talking albeit in a tense area/situation, over how stupid he is for thinking humans are even somewhat good. The antagonist goes on and on, list example after example as to why humans are pieces of shits, and ends with him smirking at the protagonist as he thinks he's thoroughly conveyed why he is right and the protagonist is an idiot. The protagonist hasn't said anything, he just listens throughout the antagonist speech with a frown. And then, the protagonist does speak, and every word he says destroys the antagonist argument. The protagonist counters every example the antagonist listed beautifully, tells him why he is so thoroughly wrong it's not even funny, and it ends with the antagonist fuming as the protagonist proves that humans aren't bastards, and that only idiot in the room is the edge-lord sprouting nihilistic garbage.
So basically, I'm looking for a trope kinda like *Shut Up, Hannibal!, except the protagonist in question actually presents a well-reasoned argument as to why the antagonist is wrong, pointing out every flaw in their philosophy. And even if the protag's philosophy has its own issues, he at the very least acknowledges them and doesn't present them as the end-all to be-all of ideologies like the antagonist does.
openIronic Positions
A form of Five-Man Band in which the ones who hold each title don't exactly look like someone who usually fits that spot. For example, the largest of the group isn't The Big Guy, but is actually The Smart Guy, while the actual Big Guy is a Cute Bruiser who barely reaches his waist. note Granted, in fantasy settings, this could be justified by them being an elf and a dwarf, respectively, but that's not what I had in mind.
openRobot Civilization
Is there a trope for a society, civilization or even entire world populated by machines and/or robots? An example would be Cybertron or the unnamed city in the flash game Little Wheel (no page here).
openWould hurt a senior
Is there a trope similar to Would Hurt a Child where a villain is considered especially bad for victimizing old people? (for much the same reason, they are usually too weak to fight back.)
openMust be here but dont know what it'd be called Film
Gist is: acknowledged happiness or contentment is a guarantee of it being taken away. (Exclusion being if it's right at the close of the story)
Eg. Go T where jaime rescues his daughter, she admits knowing of her true parentage and they share a heartfelt moment. This of course being Go T (before plot armor) her death was a certainty. Eg 2. Clash of the titans (remake) Perseus on the boat with adoptive family says he is happy/has all he could want, signing their death sentence.
It's a fairly common plot device to convey the loss the character is about to face, though telegraphs it quite heavily since it's used a LOT.
Much obliged for any help finding this one. Mostly interested in others thoughts on the device and other stories it exists in.
openDoing nothing is evil also
Is there a trope for this. For a hypothetical example: Imagine someone sees a guy molesting a kid but just walks away and doesn't do anything (not even calling the cops). While obviously not as evil as actually molesting a child, such behavior is still pretty damn reprehensible.
openIndex of work indexes
Do we have an index of all indexes that list works? What about all indexes that list tropes?
openBoast Backfire
Someone makes a boast but a Comically Missing the Point follow up makes sound like a put down instead.
Classic example is the Rich Bitch bragging incessantly about her family’s military history. Brother is fighting in Afghanistan, Dad fought in Iraq, Grandpa fought in Vietnam, Great-Grandpa fought in Germany.....
Halfwitted Hillbilly cuts in and drawls, “Gee, Alice, your family just can’t get along with nobody.”
What is the trope?
Edited by BradyLadyopenHeelFaceImmunity
Is there a variant of Joker Immunity, where a villain shows signs of wanting to turn good and might even redeem themselves, only to turn evil again in the next movie/episode/whatever because they are too popular as a villain?
openEveryone hides their true self
Is there a trope for the idea of how almost everyone hides parts of themselves and wears a metaphorical mask? I can think of two musical examples:
- Christina Aguilera: "Reflection" is about how she feels the need to be like this and wishes she could just show her true self
- VNV Nation "Chrome" is about how everyone basically does this, the first line being "A million faces, each, a million lies/for each and all a chrome disguise" as chrome is used to make metal look shinier and prettier.
openUsing science to make powers stronger and/or more creative?
Sometimes I see characters in fiction who know a thing or two about science to use their power in new and unexpected ways. Like Static using his powers to stop a villain from being able to go intangible by changing the bond in said villains molecules. It's not always hard science, but the science in question is, at the very least, somewhat based on reality.
Alice: "I want a new place to live."
Bob: "I found a property here, take a look."
Alice: "Er, that's a porta-potty. I wanted a house?"
Bob: "Hey, you just said you want a place to live. Don't move the goalposts!"
Alice: "I would think not a porta-potty would not need to be stated?"
