Find a Trope:
openCharacter looks somewhere else and then it cuts to black Film
(Spoilers for the movies I mention here) The Usual Suspects, Memento, and Predestination all have something like this at the end, where it's a close-up shot of the main character and he says something in a voiceover around the same moment as he either moves his eyes or turns his head to look elsewhere. The frame with him looking in a different direction only lasts for a second or so, and then it cuts to black, ending the movie. May have a similar feeling as Smash Cut.
This probably sounds bizarrely specific but I think you can see what I mean if you've seen the movies or the clips of them recently. I think this technique is intended to give the audience a slight feeling of unrest and also possibly a bit of exhilaration, knowing that the character's story isn't over and it's not heading in a necessarily good way, but it will still be exciting. At least that's a common thread I see in these movies.
Edited by Troper48openRapid Reality Roulette
A character is learning Be Careful What You Wish For, most likely involving time travel, and after a few tries where he doesn't get it right, we see a montage of many different realities that result from his further wishes/attempts to fix the timeline. Often will stumble across one and say "oh this looks normal" only for some weird thing to be revealed. Examples of this moment where the realities are being rapidly shifted through: Simpsons Treehouse of Horror V Gumball The Countdown We Bare Bears Charlie's Halloween Thing 2
Gravity Falls finale part 1 has a similar thing that's just the reality montage aspect of it.
Edited by Troper48openThe Remorseless Videogame
Hello.
I am looking for some kind of trope that covers characters that are of the kind that they have no regrets nor remorse over any of their actions. I Regret Nothing doesn't quite feel like it fits as this particular one never utters the phrase itself. And The Unapologetic doesn't quite feel like it fits either.
I am mostly looking for it for this character (remember to turn on subs) (And as a sidenote, he also has to power of making others not feel remorse for their actions either, so yea, I think I need some kind of trope to describe this trait as it is so central to the character.)
openEveryone steps forward or gets up
Usually a series of reaction shots. Examples:
Edited by Troper48openDate Reveal
The exact date of an important In-Universe event is revealed. Unlike most other reveals, knowing this beforehand usually won't ruin the experience in any way. The Flash (2014) does this a few times, with a Freeze-Frame Bonus in "Who Is Harrison Wells?" confirming the date of Tess Morgan's death, and the later episode "The Man Who Saved Central City" confirming the date Barry's mother was killed. Also I think the Arrow episode "Broken Arrow" is the first time the date of the particle accelerator explosion is confirmed In-Universe. Another example is in Ninjago, where Season 7 reveals the Serpentine War (as seen and discussed in Season 4) happened 40 years ago. Date Reveals can also often be done by Word of God from my experience.
Edited by Troper48openPrisoner pretending to be sick
Classic Escape Trope ploy: pretend that you or your cellmate is terribly sick, then attack or slip past the guards when they open the cell to check.
It's on the Evil Overlord List, but is this a trope we have?
openLovers reunited in old age
A pair of young Star-Crossed Lovers falls in love and is separated. Decades later, they meet again. At this point they may rekindle their relationship, or they may realize they've grown apart. Some stories have one of the lovers die shortly after the reunion, which may result in Died in Your Arms Tonight, Dying Declaration of Love, or Stay with Me Until I Die.
openCursed Village
Do we have a trope for when an entire town/village is cursed and the hero has to lift it? I see this a lot in Eastern RPGs
Edited by maliasresolved The Cultist Always Dies Web Original
A worshipper performs a ritual to summon the devil or a dark god. When the creature shows up, either because the ritual worked, or by coincidence, it kills (or eats) the cultist.
openGroin Attack Near Miss Film
Bob is on the floor, scooting backwards. A piece of debris or similar strikes the ground between his legs, exactly where his groin was a moment earlier. Bob gets an Oh, Crap! look on his face.
One obvious example is in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where Harry is on the ground and the rogue bludger that's been attacking him keeps coming, hitting the ground to one side of him, then the other, then between his legs as he dodges.
There's also a Scorpion episode where a piece of exploding machinery buries itself in the ground between Toby's legs. Not sure of the episode.
open"Why Don't They Just" Debate
An argument where both sides are stuck because each one thinks it's being the reasonable one and the other needlessly difficult.
To take Toilet Seat Divorce as an example:
openChosen by the dark lord
Another subversion of the 'chosen one' trope. In here, a character is a chosrn one... but they are chosen by the antagonist. Also these character often get manipulated or pulled by the antagonist, in order to fulfill their destiny. In most cases they resist their fate and fight their choser.
openGeneral kids show trope
A character’s favorite musician/actor/athlete wants to retire but the characters convince them to continue.
It’s kinda a pet-peeve trope, because let that poor guy retire!
openYou go first!
Stock situation / stock phrase. There might be traps ahead, or an ambush, or some other dangerous situation to that extent. So one member of the party is forced to go first so that he takes on almost all of the risk. This is very commonly done if one of the party is an outed traitor or an captive enemy.
openPhone Book Interrogation
You know, the one where the cop beats a suspect with a phone book during interrogation.
Seen and parodied in The Middleman. Mentioned in Monk. Used by Keanu in Street Kings. Even Sandra Bullock tried this in The Heat.
I know there must be a ton of other examples. And even some in the post phone book era of the cellphone.
More than just Throw the Book at Them, it's a staple of police information gathering technique. I once tried to trace the earliest mention of this: turns out it may have come from an expose on police brutality on Chicago from the 1970's. And made it into film then?
Looks like this falls into a Sub-Trope of Perp Sweating.
Edited by trooper8openPun isn't obvious until you say it out loud
Is there a trope for this? It probably varies from person to person but this happens to me in real life a lot, to name one example: where I live (Northern CA) there was this shaved ice company named "Parrot Ice". I asked "why is it called Parrot Ice", then immediately was like "oh, duh" (it sounds just like "paradise".)
openTardiness Index
Is there an index for delays and lateness? I tried looking through the indexes of the following tropes and didn't find it...
Basically, when some show/movie/etc has a horror aesthetic, but it’s also for children, so they can’t make it too scary. The color palette might be dark, there may be various weapons scattered around the setting, and some characters might be zombies or ghosts, but no gore or death will ever actually be shown (or of death is mentioned, it will be violence-free, and the afterlife will probably be shown as a cool place). The main characters will usually act like normal people, not crazy or disturbing, and true Nightmare Fuel will be very rare. Examples of this include Scooby-Doo, Ruby Gloom, and The Nightmare Before Christmas, just to make a few.
I’m thinking that this is a sub trope of Horror Comedy, because it’s specifically a trope geared toward children, which not all horror-comedies are
