Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

For as awesome as The Clone Wars was, my heart will always hold a special for Clone Wars, with its absolutely bonkers power levels, badass fight scenes and terrifying iteration of Grievous. Easily one of the most fun cartoons in sheer entertainment value I've ever seen.

Oh, and while I'm on the subject of Star Wars? I've got one who I think is a pretty easy cut from the CM page:

  • Jango Fett: Open Seasons: Tor Vizsla, Jango's Arch-Enemy, is the founder of the Death Watch extremists bent on returning the Mandalorians to their worst warmongering ways and is responsible for every tragedy in Jango's life. When Jango was a young boy, his entire family was killed by Vizsla and his men when they got caught in the crossfire of his war with Jaster Mereel and the True Mandalorian faction. Later on, when Fett had succeeded Mereel as leader of the True Mandalorians, Vizsla conspired to trick the Jedi into believing that the True Mandalorians were slaughtering political "dissidents"—actually armed insurgents—along with women and children; evidence for the latter was provided by Vizsla's men. This resulted in a horrific battle between the Mandalorians and a task force of Jedi that left almost everyone on both sides dead.

Mkay so Vizsla is already scraping the bottom of the barrel here, but something that should be noted? The murdering of women and children is entirely offscreen, with zero actual bodycount or major reference to it being made. Vizsla just says he's going to do it, and that's all that's made of it—we don't see any potential victims or the corpses or even anyone else mention it, Vizsla just says he's gonna go find some women and children to kill and frame Jango for it. This is absolutely Offscreen Villainy with no weight or consequences given to this supposed action.

So what's that leave Tor, here? Killing Jango's family, tricking Jango and the Mandos into killing some armed insurgents, and getting some Mandos and Jedi killed by pitting them against each other. It's really, really barebones, especially for Star Wars, and I'm not seeing Tor standing out at all.

Just looking at other villains around his level, Jango himself goes on to slaughter an entire village of genuinely well-intentioned rebels just because he was paid to do it—the later leader of Death Watch Pre Vizsla wipes out villages and kills dozens of Mandalore citizens—Montross is nothing but a bounty hunter who kills targets for fun and blows up an entire space station, killing hundreds if not thousands...

Tor may be low on the totem pole of resources, but he's not near low enough, and especially not near heinous enough, for his paltry rapsheet to make him a CM, in my opinion.

Tonight I dine on monkey soup.

Also I re-watched some scenes from Message From The King to make sure I get the facts straight with Wentworth. First off Wentworth has zero redeeming qualities His torture and murder of Bianca are entirely true, he was Bianca's dentist, slashes Preston's throat he does work for Duke, hired a pair of cops through a politician to kill King resulting in them beating him near death and is heavily involved in his prostitution ring (it is implied that many of the prostitutes were Wentworth's patients).

Unfortunately its not entirely confirmed that he had Bianca's husband killed as it is his debt collectors who killed him (though it is implied that he sent the debt collectors to kill him or at least took part in the murder given that he had knowledge about his death) and Bianca's husband sold her into prostitution to clear his debt (its also implied that Wentworth convinced him to do that given that Bianca was Wentworth’s patient given his extensive knowledge of the situation).

However I still think that he could count, given that Wentworth had Bianca brutally tortured before killing her in a horrific manner, kills a person whose tied up and defenseless, and has zero redeeming qualities, but I just want to get all my facts straight and I hope that Wentworth can still count.

Heading to work soon. Gonna drop off the 24 EP now. For anyone who doesn't know, Season 6 revolves around Jack Bauer and CTU discovering that terrorists have acquired suitcase nukes—one of which actually detonates—and they need to stop them before another one goes off and the American government declares war on the Middle East Here's one of the main terrorists behind it all.

Who Is He?

Dmitri Gredenko is the second half of the Disc One Final Duumvirate in Season 6.

What Has He Done?

About a year prior to Season 6, Gredenko met Fayed in regards to a cache of nuclear weapons. Not long before the season started, Gredenko was supposed to release said nukes for decommissioning through Graem and Phillip Bauer's company. Instead, Gredenko supplied the nukes to Darren McCarthy, and in turn the nukes were sold to Abu Fayed. Gredenko and Fayed orchestrated for the five bombs to be set off in high-value targets throughout California. However, one went off in Valencia only killing 12,000, while the second was disarmed by Jack Bauer. Gredenko first shows up after the second bomb is disarmed, where he chastises Fayed for carelessly wasting both bombs. Afterwards, he speaks with one of his men about finding new targets. His men end up smuggling a US drone onto an airfield, which they arm with one of the remaining three nukes. His contact, Anatoly Markov, calls him and alerts him that Charles Logan—and by default, the Americans—know about Russia's involvement with Fayed. Not long after, CTU storms the Russian consulate and kills Markov and his security detail. Knowing CTU is on their trail, Gredenko bails on the idea of using drones since he only has time to launch one. After his pilots launch the drone, Fayed and Gredenko's men depart from the airfield.

Gredenko repeatedly calls his drone pilot on status updates about the drone and tells him it's on schedule, ready to be set off in San Francisco. However, CTU manages to find and kill the drone pilots and succeeds in steering the drone away from the city. With only two bombs left, Gredenko and Fayed start getting hostile with each other, with Fayed almost attempting to Gredenko for screwing up with the drones. Gredenko phones Mark Hauser in regards to security specs he needed for a power plant. Mark Hauser gets his brother, Brady, to do it for him. After Mark is wounded and captured by CTU, Mark has Brady meet up with Gredenko instead to give him the specs. During the meet, CTU and Jack Bauer successfully kill Gredenko's guards and capture Gredenko himself.

Gredenko tells Fayed that he has the remaining two bombs and that he'll lead CTU to him, but only if he gets full immunity and doesn't return to Russia. Begrudgingly, CTU agrees to the deal. They put a tracker in Gredenko's arm and follow him to a meeting at Santa Monica Pier. While there, Gredenko betrays CTU, removing his hidden wire and convincing Fayed to hack off his arm with an axe. As Gredenko and Fayed's men try to flee CTU, Fayed and Gredenko find themselves in a restaurant. Gredenko uses the opportunity to rat out Fayed, screaming to the crowd that he's the terrorist from the news everyone is looking for. While the mob is beating up Fayed and he's gradually taken into custody, Gredenko sneaks away beneath the pier.

Since he has no arm and received no medical treatment, he dies of blood loss.

Mitigating Factors?

None. No friends, family, blah blah blah blah blah. He does have a Villainous Friendship with the Russian Consul Anatoly Markov, but they were basically just allies working together. Gredenko didn't hate Markov like he hates Fayed, but after Markov dies, he's more worried about getting caught by the authorities as opposed to being upset that Markov is dead and never brings him up afterwards.

Heinous Standard Issues?

I've gone through the heinous standard multiple times, so to keep it simple, most seasons involve someone with a nuclear bomb who wants to kill tens of thousands, etc., etc.

I'll keep it brief. He's responsible for Fayed getting the five nuclear bombs and they planned on setting them off in five critical targets, which would've killed millions. On top of this, Gredenko wanted the Middle East to take the blame so that the Middle East and America would go to war, and then Russia would become a superpower once the war ended. So on top of trying to kill millions like Fayed, he also tried to start a war.

So pass here.

Final Verdict?

Yush.

I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.

[tup] Scarf (oh, hi John Carradine), Screenslaver, Rajine, Gredenko, all the Pathfinder ones. Cut Tor.

Abstain on Tom until Ravok's question is answered.

Also, a few other things:

  • Since 24 now has 8, time to relaunch the page? Which quote do y'all like?
"They paid me a lot of money to do it. And then I've taken my son captive and I’m torturing him, then I was going to take my grandson captive and threaten him. So I went to the producers and I said, 'Look, are there any redeeming qualities to this character?' They looked at me as though I was nuts, I was asking something bizarre."
James Cromwell, on his 24 character Phillip Bauer

Phillip Bauer: I'm a patriot, Jack. I never wanted any harm to come to this country.
Jack Bauer: You wanna lie to yourself, you go ahead, but stop lying to me! You let all of this happen just so you could cover up what you did!
Phillip: *grins* You have all the smarts that Graem never had.
24, Season 6, 3:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M. (Episode 10)

I've re-added the Message from the King duo to the Drafts so Wentworth can be corrected.

And I've added these to the batch:

  • ProudNintendoFan's series (part 1, part 2, part 3): Shao Kahn is the brutal tyrant of Outworld who is solely motivated to conquer other realms. Upon invading Edenia, he wipes out entire villages and murders its ruler, King Jerrod, but not before taunting him that he'll take his family as his own. When his attempts to merge Earthrealm via the Mortal Kombat tournament fails, Shao Kahn beats Shang Tsung and only spares him when the latter formulates a plot to lure and kill the Earthrealm warriors in an Outworld tournament, in which Shao Kahn orders his forces to raid the Shaolin temples and slaughter the monks there to lure Liu Kang. When he learns that Reptile was defeated in the tournament, he informs Reptile that his entire race went extinct to increase his loyalty, leaving out the fact that Shao Kahn himself was responsible for exterminating them. During his fight with Liu Kang, Shao Kahn tries to strangle Kitana when she intervenes, murder Liu Kang after he's defeated, and then orders his forces to slaughter the Earthrealm warriors anyways. He later invades Earthrealm illicitly, where he wipes out entire cities and absorbs the countless souls lost in the conflict to increase his own power.
  • The Green Hornet: James Rancourt, from "Alias the Scarf", was a Serial Killer who terrorized the city decades ago, killing numerous victims by garroting them with a scarf in order to join the "great company" of Jack the Ripper, Attila the Hun and Bluebeard in immortality through fame, before disappearing and adopting the identity of an unassuming researcher at a wax museum. After a statue of The Scarf is placed in his museum's chamber of evil, he begins killing again, pretending to be his own wax statue. He starts by attempting to kill his partner and apparent friend at the museum, then rampages through the street, killing a man sleeping on a public bench and trying to kill several more before the police intervene. When confronted by a girl he used to confide in and who loved him he attempts to kill her as well to ensure his "immortality" by killing her, right before the Green Hornet and Kato apprehend him.

There are some problems with this entry

  • Reginald Birch is also the Greater-Scope Villain of the Kenway Saga. Initially a friend to Edward Kenway, when the latter's daughter, Jennifer Scott, exposes Birch to her father as not only a Templar of the British Rite but also their Grand Master, he sends mercenaries to the Kenway manor to murder Edward Kenway, and kidnap Jennifer to be sold as a Sex Slave to Turkish slavers, all while framing a innocent servant for the crime. He then takes in Edward's son Haytham, only so he could manipulate him into becoming a killer as well as a Knight Templar fanatic. From there he has Haytham kill many people, including the opposing Assassins. He even has a fellow Templar tortured and castrated when he got in the way of his plans. He also has Haytham uncover technology from the First Civilization, knowing full well the kind of destruction that they bring, all so he could use them to rule the world, even sending the below-mentioned Edward Braddock to help him. When Haytham finds where Jennifer is being captive as well as Birch being the true culprit behind his father's murder, Birch tries to have Haytham killed along with Jennifer. In his last moments Birch tries to pass himself off as well-intentioned, but Haytham can see right through him as nothing more than a self-deluded madman only using the Templar ideology as an excuse to claim more power for himself.

First, Birch didn't send Braddock to help Haytham in search of Grand Temple. At time Haytham arrived in Colonies, Braddock had already distanced himself from Birch and templars.

Second, what kind of destruction is in question?

It can't be causing earthquakes, because when Birch sent Haytham neither templars or assassins knew about that.

If it is something else, then question is did Reginald knew how really dangerous is First Civilization technology in Grand Temple. Sure he would knew that Isu technology aren't toys, but as far as he knew, Grand Temple could contains a device which can control every mind in the world not some WMD.

Besides, he wasn't the only one who wanted to find Grand Temple. Prince Ahmet from Revelation hoped that in Altäir's library he would found clues of location of Grand Temple.

Why would Reginald be aware what kind of destruction would brought technology in Grand Temple but Ahmet wouldn't?

Here's my entry for Fanscription!Screenslaver.

  • What if the Incredibles Got Older ?: The Screenslaver and Winston Deaver are made into a Composite Character, and lack the redeeming or sympathetic qualities of the former, and much more villainous than the latter. This version of Deaver was a disgruntled former agent of the Superhero Relocation Program, who felt society has lost its way by accepting Supers back in the public. As the Screenslaver, he brainwashes hundreds of Supers into an army and attacking the public, such as what he does to Frozone, and promotes fear mongering of a Super uprising in society in hopes of turning the public against them. After he brainwashes Bob and Helen Parr, it's revealed Deaver plans on having his army commit a terrorist attack and kill civilians at an amusement park. When foiled by the Parr children, he arms himself with a bomb and takes a roller-coaster full of people hostage, intending as taking as many as he can with him. During the ensuing fight, his attempts to justify himself are shot down, showing his motivations boil down to seeing Supers as "lesser" than normal people.

@Ravok while Tom is most certainly deranged, he isn't mentioned in the film to have a serious mental disorder. He also seems to be very much in control of his actions for me to call him insane. There is a scene that shows him swallowing prescribed pills which I initially thought were for a mental disorder, but was actually to numb the pain from having been shot.
