Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Ehhhhh screw it, just gonna do a full EP on BNA.

BNA: Brand New Animal is the newest Studio TRIGGER creation which follows a teenager girl named Michiru Kagemori on the run after being turned into a Beast Man tanuki. After learning about Anima City, a supposed safe haven for Beastmen like her that'll protect her from humans that wanna imprison/kill her, she ventures off into the luxurious city of Zooto—

ACK.

Anima City.

But once in Anima City, she discovers Beastmen are just as bad (and good) as humans, albeit there's one person in question who isn't who he says he is.

Who Is He?

Alan Sylvasta is the CEO of Sylvasta Pharmaceuticals and the true Big Bad for the series. Or season, depending on whether we get a second season—which might happen given that a manga is currently in-progress and a prequel novel was published. But anyway.

What Has He Done?

Some time before the series began, Michiru and her best friend, Nazuna Hiwatashi, were both involved in a car accident. While in the hospital, they're accidentally given beastmen blood, which results in them both getting Beastmanitis, a disease that seemingly turns them into beastmen forever. Wanting to capitalize on this, Alan has Nazuna "kidnapped" so he can experiment on her in terms of discovering more about her disease. As time goes on, Alan convinces Nazuna to become leader of the Silver Wolf Order, a religious group that worships the Silver Wolf deity. Donning the identity of the Silver Wolf herself, Nazuna, now Déesse Louve, gains thousands of new followers, and it's her influence on the city that tends to pacify the beastmen whenever they get stressed/angry (I'll come back to all this later).

In the present, after knowing of Michiru's activity in Anima City, his lackey Mr. Yaba ends up bombing his own lab to cover up his criminal activities with a local gang. Alan tells Yaba to erase all evidence connected to the crime, including Michiru. Of course, Yaba and his partner Mimura are both stopped by Michiru and her new companion Shirou Oogami. Alan discovers footage of Michiru and Shirou in combat and takes interest in them both as he heads to Anima City personally. While in Anima City, Alan suggests for Mayor Rose to deny the Silver Wolf Order's request to seek sanction in Anima City, knowing that it'll only give anti-beastmen more fuel against them. Later that same night, Alan is almost killed by a beastman assassin, only to be saved by Nazuna, thus increasing the Silver Wolf Order's reputation and allowing Alan to "change his mind" about letting the cult stay in the city. After the incident, Alan sends Boris Cliff, Nazuna's personal advisor, to visit Yaba while he's imprisoned, where he gives him a drug that induces Nyrvasil Syndrome, causing Yaba to turn into a colossal, rabid, rock-hard rhino beastman who goes on a mindless rampage, wounding or killing multiple prisoners and police officers. Michiru and Shirou manage to kill him, almost dying in the process.

Later on, Alan's guards take Nazuna "hostage" again, but this time Michiru follows the kidnappers to Alan's lab. Once there, she finds out that Nazuna wasn't kidnapped; she was getting an MRI. And it's here where Alan reveals his plan about using Nazuna to maintain the beastmen's mental discipline so they won't succumb to Nyrvasil Syndrome like Yaba. Unbeknown to the beastmen, he's been creating special anti-beastmen attack robots designed to attack beastmen affected by the Nyrvasil Syndrome. After Shirou and Michiru find out about Alan's robots, they confront Alan, where he reveals that he plans on using the robots to "cure" the beastmen of their disease, stating that everyone is capable of undergoing Nyrvasil Syndrome, and that eventually, the beastmen in Anima City will ultimately resort to destroying each other. Seeing no other option, he uses his data to convince the mayor to hold a meeting with the human Prime Minister Shiramizu. As it turns out, he actually tries to hold her hostage (albeit she escapes later).

Meanwhile, Alan has Nazuna hold a concert with all of the Silver Wolf Order attending and the whole city watching over a live broadcast. He convinces her to confess that she's really human, knowing that her fans will understand, when in reality he knows it'll enrage the beastmen. Michiru ends up convincing Nazuna not to confess—which she doesn't. As a backup plan, Boris comes along and exposes Nazuna's secret, which causes hundreds of beastmen to become enraged with Nyrvasil Syndrome. Afterwards, all of the anti-beastmen robots are deployed, equipped with an antidote that'll permanently turn beastmen into humans. Shirou goes to fight Alan, and it's here where we find out that Alan is a beastman himself—a pure-blood, to be exact. All the beastmen in Anima City are actually half-bloods—something that Alan hates, and he really wants to eradicate all the beastmen solely so he can rule over them in secret while they're humans. Eventually, Shirou (who's the actual Silver Wolf) ends up beating his ass and defeating him, and Alan ends up resigning from being CEO and disappears off-screen.

Freudian Excuse?

At first, he wants to cure Beastmanitis, hence why he was experimenting on Nazuna to begin with. And to be fair, he's not wrong; he does want to cure said disease. And all beastmen are capable of succumbing to Nyrvasil Syndrome. But he's a Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist. He wants to turn the beastmen into humans solely so he can rule over them. Since Alan is a pure-blood beastman, he finds all other beastmen to be inferior and wants to fully take away their beastmen status.

So he has an FE, but by the final episode, it's nullified.

Redeeming Qualities?

None. Everyone Alan is nice to is purely superficial. He only acts nice to them to put on a facade and to gain everyone's trust. Even when he openly tells the truth to people about his dastardly plans, he leaves out his more dire intentions to make himself look good.

Heinous Standard Issues?

It's high. This is an anime where it's legal to brutally injury or even kill your opponents while playing baseball. The first episode has mercenary beastmen bombing a festival, the second episode has a mob boss attempting to sell beastchildren out into a trafficking system, etc. The beastmen themselves are not exactly the nicest of people.

That being said, Alan goes out of his way to eradicate all of the beastmen either by permanently making them human or having them slaughtered during the carnage he caused during Nazuna's concert. Not everyone raged out when the Nyrvasil Syndrome struck the public; lots of innocent male, female, and children beastmen were exposed to their attacks and injured or nearly killed. He also had one of his own lackeys subjected to Nyrvasil Syndrome, which resulted in various cops and prisoners getting injured/killed, and he basically turned a teenage girl into a popular messiah solely to reverse all of that and make her a pariah that everyone would hate and try to kill. He basically tried to demolish an entire city and kill/rule over its citizens because he deemed them all beneath him.

Final Verdict?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh sure? Yes? Maybe?

I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.

@Lightysnake: I've only seen a couple of episodes of We Bare Bears, though I do specifically recall watching the episode where Nom-Nom's plan to get famous would've "probably" gotten Grizz and Panda killed, so I did see one of the episodes where there was murderous intent. I've noticed that people keep trying to put uncessary additions onto the Amon Goeth entry. The entry as it stood read thusly, emphasis mine:

  • Complete Monster: SS officer Amon Goeth is in charge of liquidating the Krakow Jewish ghetto, and is later in charge of the Plaszow concentration camp. When a Jewish forewoman (who has a degree in structural engineering) protests the structure they are building is unsound, Goeth has her killed for raising her opinion, only to follow her instruction to improve the structure. Tormenting his prisoners for his amusement, Goeth shoots them from his quarters with a sniper rifle for sport; kills 25 in anger for one escaping; and laughs at the crying parents of children he sends off to the gas chambers. Subverting any chance at humanity he is given, when Oskar Schindler tries to convince him to show mercy, Goeth briefly considers sparing a Jewish boy who failed to clean spots from his bathtub before killing him; and finding himself attracted to a Jewish woman, decides to blame her for his own lust and savagely beats her. Perhaps most unsettlingly of all, the creative team behind the film actually downplayed some of the real Goeth's atrocities out of fear that they would be unbelievable to the movie's audience.

I've cut the bolded but frankly this is not the first time this has happened, so we're going to need to do something to avoid this becoming a recurring problem.

[up][up] As of the time this message is posted, the tally for Agent Trout is 3 [tup]'s, 3 abstains, and 9 [tdown]'s. Following the general rule of thumb, Agent Trout would need at least eleven more [tup]'s in order to count, assuming that the number of [tdown]'s doesn't change.

Alright I’ve just finish playing Star Wars Battlefront II (2017), have EP’d Iden Visero in the Magnificent Bastard cleanup thread and I believe that I have one (and possibly two) candidates to discuss here in the CM thread, but first let us talk about the game.

What’s The Work?

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is shooter video-game that takes place in the Star Wars Expanded Universe where you get to play as a stormtrooper in its single-player campaign as storm trooper, Iden Versio.

However Iden becomes disillusion with the Empire once Operation Cinder involves destroying planets loyal to the Empire and defects from it. Her “friend” Gideon Hask, not so much and he is who I’ll be EPing tonight.

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Gideon Hask is a soldier serving the Galactic Empire and part of Iden Versio’s Inferno Squad, a group of elite soldiers handpicked by Iden herself and tasked with carrying out the Empire’s most dangerous missions and accomplishing them.

Their first mission took place after the destruction of the first Death Star in the prequel novel Star Wars Inferno Squad and it was to eliminate the Dreamers, an extremist group consisting of surviving members of Saw Gerrera's Partisans, to which after wards Gideon personally has them all killed, even those who are completely innocent.

When Gideon and theInferno Squad arrived on Endor to help the storm troopers kill the Rebels and Gideon gladly carries out the Emperor’s contingency plan, Operation: Cinder, which is to destroy several planets loyal to the Empire should the Emperor die, to ensure that the galaxy would still fear the Empire.

When Iden goes against Gideon and the Empire since he wanted to destroy Vardos and kill all the innocent people still on it, Gideon tries to kill Iden, Del, and the civilians that the duo were trying rescue before extracting Gleb.

Afterwards, Gideon would become Iden and Del’s Arch-Enemy where he would do anything to kill them such as having his storm troopers ambushed them when they were trying to destroy the Chinook fuel station and gleefully attempts to shoot Iden out of the sky during the Battle of Jakku

Gideon Hask, would eventually become a high ranking officer of the First Order and comes up with the plan to have Gleb kidnap children all over the Galaxy where Gideon would have them brainwashed into becoming loyal and fanatical soldiers to the First Order a plan which Gideon calls Project Resurrection. Gideon would also have Kylo Ren torture his former comrade Del, via Mind Rape before executing Del by shooting him countless times and later executes Gleb once she’s no longer any use to them before attempting to kill Iden and Shiv

Afterwards Iden and her allies would infiltrate Gideon’s ship, the Retribution, to kill Gideon, destroy his forces AKA the retribution, and putting an end to his Project Resurrection. However Gideon holds Iden’s daughter, Zay, hostage and attempts to kill Zay’s daughter, but Iden intervened and kill Gideon, only for Gideon to have fatally shot Iden prior leading to her death as well.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

Okay so it was briefly mentioned that his parents worked for the Galactic Empire and were killed by a rebel bomber when he was a child. However, Gideon has never shown has have actually cared for them as he never mentions them in the book nor the game, merely viewing them as expendable to the Empire.

His loyalties to the Empire are strictly out of his enjoyment to sowing fear into his enemies and taking enjoyment out of seeing them suffer or kill by his hands and joins its successor, The First Order, just so that he can continue instilling fear through death and suffering once more.

He did seem to care, or at least respect Iden and Visero, but once they go against the Empire’s orders not to rescue civilians, Gideon show no hesitation nor remorse in attempting to kill the duo and the civilians that they were trying to rescue and later show glee in hunting down them and later killing Del before spitefully shooting at his corpse, while also attempting to kill Iden and her daughter.

Heinousness

I understand that Star Wars has a pretty high heinous standard, but given Gideon Hask’s rank and limited resources, I’d say that he goes all out with what he has. He’s goes against Iden's orders and shows to sadistic glee in massacring the Dreamers and innocence in the prequel novel, whole-hardily supports and even helps carrying out Operation Cinder which involves destroying planets loyal to The Empire while killing billions of lives in the process, and tries kill his own allies and the civilians that they were protecting.

He’s also is in charge of a galaxy wide child trafficking ring, which is extremely unique in the Star Wars canon where he personally oversees the kidnapping of innocent children throughout the galaxy where he would then brainwash said children into becoming fanatical soldiers for the First Order, kills his own ally Gleb once he believe that she is of use to him, has Kylo Ren torture Del through Mind Rape before he personally executes him, and fatally shoots Iden, and attempts to kill Iden’s daughter.

Really the only person who I might consider is Gleb since she does take part in Gideon’s child-trafficking ring, but given that Gleb seems subordinate to Gideon along with Gideons other atrocities, I would say that he has Gleb beat in terms of heinousness. Anyone else isn’t worth considering, especially Garrick and Iden Visero whom both have redeeming qualities and are no where near as bad of Gideon.

Final Verdict?

I will leave it to you guys to decide.
