Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Does anyone else have anything to say about User's EP? I think that some people may have missed it.

Also Vile's EP may need more votes too, it's currently at 7.

[up][up][up] Feel free to request those. I'm fine with those potholes.

[up][up] Or, say, In Death, which has 13 entries (well, 14 monsters, but one's a duo), but has been around since 1995 and has 50 novels plus.

Speaking of, I think I may have another In Death candidate.

[tdown] Trout, while dark for We Bare Bears, seems to be more of a plain MEH crossing Hate Sink whose actions just barely stand apart from the other villains, especially since they tried to kill the bears as well.

Yes to Talleyrand.

Hey I managed to get my life somewhat stable, but I still won't be here as often as I normally would. As I will still be pretty busy. However it is better than nothing.

Yes to Talleyrand no to Trout. The closest thing I can find where all of the villains count would be the RE films since 5 of the 7 major villains count (as in all but one of the individual films' Big Bads).

I'm not sure when Lighty is going to start on the Guild Wars effort posts, so I'm gonna go ahead and do my first one from Guild Wars 2 tomorrow. I normally like to line these things up, but it won't hurt to get the ball rolling and follow up on Abaddon.

Alright, so this is a character that has been brought up a couple times before in the thread but has never actually received a legitimate EP, and while I do admit that I don't have high hopes that this character will make the cut, I do think that he stands out just enough to at least warrant a proper effort post

So here we go.

What's the work?

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and the sequel Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 are a reboot of the popular Castlevania video game franchise which chronicles the esteemed Belmont family and their conflict with the powerful vampire lord Dracula. The reboots (which happens to be my favorite games of all time btw) change a couple details while adding in a couple more elements. The first game is about how a terrible curse that has been casted upon the world that has separated the earth from the Heavens and allowing monsters to wreak havoc. Enter Gabriel Belmont, the founder of the Belmont family, the warrior chosen to save the world. Along his quest he meets another warrior who aids him in his journey. A warrior by the name of Zobek played by Patrick Stewart.

Who is Zobek and what does he do?

The narrator of the first game, Zobek is properly introduced to the player by saving Gabriel from the Ice Titan. Gabriel and Zobek are both members of the Brotherhood of Light, an ancient order of holy warriors dedicated to protecting the innocent from the supernatural. Gabriel interacts with spirit of his wife Marie who tells Gabriel of a prophecy. Zobek explains to Gabriel that this prophecy tells of a powerful warrior who would kill the Lords of Shadow and take their power as his own. The Lords of Shadow are a trio of Monster Lords that lead each of the three main supernatural races: the lycanthropes, the vampires, and the necromancers. Gabriel and Zobek than organize the plan to defeat the Dark Lords once and for all and depart on their own separate ways.

We meet Zobek once more after Gabriel has defeated Cornell the Lycanthrope Dark Lord, in the land of the vampires. Zobek helps Gabriel retrieve a relic to fight against the vampires before they separate once more.

We meet Zobek one last time in the first game in the Land of the Dead, after Gabriel killed Carmilla, the Vampire Dark Lady, when Gabriel completes the God Mask, a divine relic that is said to bring back the dead. Zobek than reveals himself to be the Lord of the Dead and the one who casted the aforementioned curse. Zobek explains that each of the three Dark Lords guard a part of the God Mask, and Zobek has desired that artifact for a really long time and went to Hell to search for an answer to gain access to it. During his journey into Hell, a powerful dark force (revealed to be Satan himself) enters Zobek which gives him the idea to cast the curse and exploit the prophecy for his benefit. Zobek reveals to Gabriel that he actually influenced Gabriel into killing Marie using an unholy artifact called the Devil Mask, which was what motivated Gabriel into going on his quest in the first place. Zobek had also influenced Gabriel into killing a mute girl by the name of Claudia earlier in the game, and revels in Gabriel's resulting despair before killing him. Of course Zobek is revealed to be a Unwitting Pawn to Satan and is set aflame, while Gabriel is resurrected to fight Satan.

The post-credits scene reveals that Zobek actually survived being burned alive and it shows him warning Gabriel, now Dracula, of Satan's imminent return, and offers to free him of his immortality if he helps him stop Satan.

There's also a interquel that takes place between the two games called Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate. While Zobek himself doesn't appear, one of his necromancers shows up to retrieve the Combat Cross of Gabriel's son Trevor.

In the sequel, Dracula awakens after centuries of sleep and greatly deprived of blood. Zobek sends his lieutenant to retrieve him and take him to Zobek's lair. Dracula awakens in a blood-crazed frenzy in front of a innocent family that Zobek abducted to feed to Dracula, which Dracula than feeds on.

Zobek than coerces Dracula into helping him prevent Satan's return. While he acts cordial and polite with Dracula, it's stated in his in-game bio that Zobek intends on having Dracula and Satan kill one another so that he can come out on top in the end and reign supreme.

In the final act of the game, it's revealed that the entire plot is actually a master plan devised by Dracula and his son Alucard; Dracula fakes his death which would draw both Zobek and Satan (who are both terrified of him) out of the woodwork and allow both Drac and Al to kill their sworn enemies. When Zobek learns of this, he teleports to their location with the Vampire Killer, the only weapon in creation capable of ending the existence of a true immortal including Dracula, and angrily reacts to this revelation by trying to kill them both, hammily accusing Dracula of betraying him despite the fact that he was intending on doing the same to him. After an epic duel, Zobek charges at Dracula with Vampire Killer, but Dracula thrusts the Void Sword through Zobek, killing the vile necromancer.

Mitigating Factos?

It's explained in the first game, that the Lords of Shadow came into being when the three founders of the Brotherhood of Light performed a ritual that transformed their souls into angels, leaving behind their bodies. The bodies contained their inner darkness. Now while this might be an instant disqualifier, I think it's important to note that unlike the other Dark Lords, who were perfectly content to stay in their own domains, Zobek was the one who actively sought greater power and desired the power of the God Mask for himself. And while it was revealed that he was possessed by Satan, I think that all that did was make him more powerful and give him the to exploit the prophecy. Influencing Gabriel into killing Marie and Claudia and relishing in his pain was all on Zobek.

The second game pretty much confirms that he is just a monster without Satan backing with his intentions of arranging Dracula and Satan fighting each other, and feeding an innocent family to Dracula. All this in my opinion truly sets him apart from the other two Lords of Shadow.

Heinousness

As some of you may already know, Lords of Shadow already has a CM in the form of Satan, who was the one who came up with the idea of the plot of the first game and arranged it through Zobek. That said Zobek was the one that did most of the work. He was the one who decided that Gabriel would be the warrior, influenced into killing Marie and Claudia and manipulated into killing the Lords of Shadow with promise of bring Marie back.

He's also responsible for one of the vilest acts in the games when he feeds a father, mother, and young daughter to Dracula. While Dracula was insane when he fed on them, and was later shown to be disturbed by what he did. Zobek however shows no remorse or empathy whatsoever, not even sparing a word for the family.

Final Verdict

As I said in the beginning, I'm not exactly confident that he'll make the cut, but I did think that he was someone worth properly E Ping

I have to say no to Zobek. Just because he's nastier and more ambitious means little. He still has no agency.
