Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Is Jerrel's being a Serial Rapist even touched upon enough?

Hell, maybe I'll just read the story myself. Seems like a fun read anyway.

[up] Considering that I literally forgot about him until someone brought him up, and that as a Mook he likely has very little screentime (I would have to reread the story to be sure because, again, I cannot remember him)... then no.

CMs are supposed to be exceptional, and a Mook that I straight-up forget about kinda fails that requirement.

So, is Crank Nelson gonna be EP-ed?

Unsure I think scraggs and lighty will be handling that

Anyway I found another Jack the ripper book. Hopefully I don't strike out for the third time on him (PM if you want to know what went terribly wrong the first two times).

Yes to Triumph, Groom, Marx, Scáthach.

Anyway here is my Brainiac write up:

  • Supergirl: The Girl of Steel: Brainiac, an evil android that wants to conquer the universe, is a dark presence in otherwise light-hearted book. Brainiac captures Superman and lures Supergirl to a planet he is slowly cooking with red sun radiation rays. If Supergirl confronts Brainiac in his ship, he plans to capture Supergirl and experiment on her and Superman. If Supergirl frees Brainiac's alien prisoners and lets them bring her to him, Brainiac kills them without a second thought. If Supergirl confronts Brainiac on the planet, Supergirl finds that the population of the planet, a race of sentient rat creatures called Ridents are being starved due to Brainiac's experiments destroying most of the food and the water on the planet. Brainiac is also capturing some of the Ridents and is using them as slaves, forcing them to work in a mine and dig up a jewel that could grant him untold power.

I guess it'll go to both DC Lit and Gamebooks under Super Powers Which Way Books.

BTW, you want Vile Villain, Saccharine Show instead of Knight of Cerebus. This tripped me up earlier; Knight is someone who changes the tone of an entire series, not just a single work.

[up] Done.

You should put Brainiac first, the Supergirl book came out before the Batman one.

I do not think anyone else in this book counts, the other villains aside from Brainiac are either too silly or generic to count.

There is one other Super Powers Which Way book, where Superman fights Toyman, Lex Luthor and General Zod, but those 3 are only occasionally written as monsters.

There is the Which Way series in general which could have some keepers, but since those books are out of print, they can go reasonable to super expensive prices online.

Yeah, I had to do some research for release dates. Which Way stuff on the DC lit page will go between C.W. Saturn and "Bone"!Joker.

I think Toyman has only 1 CM incarnation. Zod has 1 for sure, maybe a few more. Luthor, surprisingly, has 7.

ACW: The Toyman from Smallville is up as well. So he has 2. As well the clone Lex (LX-3) from that show counts. So if you want to get technical 8 for him.

[up][up] Smallville Toyman counts, but I doubt Toyman would super monstrous in a book from the early 80s aimed at kids. I am not sure I would want to buy this book just on the off chance one of these villains counted unless I can get it for dirt cheap.

I would like to cover some of the regular Which Way books, unfortunately, I do not know enough about them have any sort of idea which book would have keepers or not. I read maybe one or two as a kid when they were at my local library, but I only remember one in terms of plot. I actually got that one to see if anyone counted, creepy book for kids, but no one really counted.

Jerrel doesn't count in Pinot Noir. Not even close.

Crank Gibson, on the other hand, chapter 4's Arc Villain and our final keeper...

Who is Gibson? What has he done?

A corrupt-to-the-core drug lord in Kaos City's morass (and a proud resident of Calgary) Crank Gibson is the creator of Pleasure, a Fantastic Drug with euphoric, hallucinatory effects and killer withdrawal. Pleasure is a best-seller, and Gibson has a highly-valued team of experts working day in and day out to produce the stuff—that is, his chemists are literal slaves whom he holds obedient with the lives of their families (all of whom he's already murdered, he muses). Innocents are experimented on to test the efficiency of his drugs, and Gibson also maintains a lovely HR department where all employee concerns are answered via an exploding bomb planted in their hearts.

Gibson's sales are through the roof on Purge Night and this gets the attention of a representative of a larger company named Clark. Clark comes over in the interest of a business proposition to broaden out the sales of Pleasure. Gibson laughs and says Kaos City "are our biggest suckers," instead volunteering to show Clark what he's been working on instead. As it turns out, Gibson is in Greta's pocket, creating the zombification formula he knows will be used for apocalyptic designs, with Greta promising the ruins to rule over. Gibson gleefully feeds Clark to one of his chained-up zombies.

Finally, when Pinot busts in to take Gibson's enterprise down, Gibson takes matters into his own hands. When the slaves start to revolt, Gibson activates their heart chips, gleefully massacring all of them, and ordering one of his goons executed when he balks at this mass murder. Pinot finally sticks the bastard with a shot of his own Pleasure when Crank is in the middle of threatening his young, abused sex slave, Maggie, and while he's tripping out on the hellish visions, Pinot leaves Maggie with a knife and allows her to stab Crank to death.

Any mitigating factors?

Any and all hesitance I have with Crank comes with the standard, but I'd say of the notable minor villains (Jerrel is a slimy serial rapist, for example, Himiko runs gladiator games when competitors are killed for the pleasure of paying audiences, the "Master Torturer" is an Affably Evil Torture Technician, etc.) Crank stands supreme. Honestly what nudges him is a detail I forgot about, and that's his willing hand in Greta's would-be apocalypse. Crank sells out the world with full expectation Greta's plan will come to fruition, so he doesn't even have Greta's odd last-minute change of plans to hamper his chances, any, arguably giving him an edge where even Greta is concerned.

Conclusion?

After reflection, keep him.

Alright, given that Triumph has been pretty much approved, I'll submit my write up, just to see what can improve from there.

  • Complete Monster: Baron Triumph AKA Principal Burr is introduced as a cannibalistic warlord roaming the post-apocalyptic lands, capturing and eating any teenagers he finds. In "Smhuck Bait" he attempts to kill Josh's entire group, including Angelica, a 10 years old and is only stopped by Ms. Crumble scaring him away. This is followed by "MMMMMMM-HMMMMMM" revealing that his lair is a repurposed Goblin Flakes factory, where he uses the children and teens he captures as slave labor and cattle. In "Canta tu Vida" it's revealed that when he was Principal Burr, he manipulated Ms. Crumble in her moments of emotional weakness to have sex with him. Then, in "Josh vs. the Apocalypse Part 2", he takes over the Jocks with Sam, Mona Lisa's and help, during which he claims to be "helping" the Jocks to "correct" themselves, severely injuring Turbo and leaving him for dead in the process. And though he appears at first to abandon his cannibalistic ways and claims to be helping the students to 'return to normalcy', it's soon shown that he never actually did, instead turning the Jocks into his personal meat farm, . His true vileness is shown in the season finale when it's revealed that he never cared for any of the kids at his school in the first place nor their wellbeing, always doing everything for the sake of helping himself in the end, and reveals that he plans on detonating an inactive nuke near the Goblin Flakes factory to destroy the entirety of Glendale with Angelica's help, whom he forces to work for him by torturing Ms. Crumble after he kidnapped them both by blowing up a missile using one of the Jocks as a sacrifice to detonate said missile and wiping out a large part of the Cheermazons, this is all done so that he and his followers can "start from zero" in a new world fit to his image. When Josh finally strikes him down, his last act is to curse him with his dying words. With his supposed Nice Guy, Reasonable Authority Figure and Pet the Dog moments pre and post-apocalypse all being all an act with hidden intentions, Baron Triumph was a monster from beginning to end.

It's my first one, so hopefully it's alrigh

"Bingo! If two species hate each other, they will wipe each other out on their own."
