Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Isn't the animated adaptation not quite canon to the game? A few differences and such?

Although, if that's the case, Animated!Lucifer could get his own entry if he counts, making another one for Blum.

Okay, here we go:

  • Godzilla Earth is the proud and arrogant ruler of an alternate Terra. Seeing itself as the supreme form of life and thus able to do whatever it choses, Earth would deem all life except itself unfit to exist and brutally exterminate it to replace it with a biosphere in its own image. Seeking to destroy humanity's remnants more out of bruised pride rather than to avenge its fallen son, Earth is confronted by four heroic Godzillas from other worlds and cruelly kills them in the course of the resulting struggle, including trying to have Showa Eaten Alive by Servum, and intends to brutalize their corpses out of spite. When they merge into the Leviathan and bring Earth to death's door, Earth attempts to suck the life out of the biosphere it itself created and everything kill all life once more in a selfish attempt to preserve its own. An ego-driven mass murderer, Godzilla Earth would haunt Junior and fuel his fear of what he could become for years to come.

The animated film of Dante's Inferno portrays the characters more negatively. Dante takes longer to realise how much of a monster he was in life, and Lucifer is more malicious and violent towards Beatrice, tricking her into thinking God heard her cry and ripping her spirit body apart continuously.

Also do I add the entry to the draft page or just leave it here for people to see?

Wow, we may have 40+ again. We've been having a LOT this year; I think that's because we've been having several new people in the thread.

Hmm, seems like Animated!Lucifer could MAYBE get his own entry, but it's not needed.

Added him before Gabara, as Gabara's entry was primarily posted as a Humanity's Stand chapter while Earth's was posted as a The Bridge chapter, even if Gabara came first, so it puts the Bridge proper entries together.

Also added 'universe' to the heading, as the Bridge is kind of its own universe of stories rather than JUST the main one.

There's also one more candidate from The Bridge universe (namely The Sound of Thunder), though I will say ahead of time, she comes from the pony side of things.

And I'll also point out, all of the Complete Monsters in The Bridge are Vile Villain, Saccharine Show sorts, for the most part it's a character driven work mostly and has plenty of more redeemable villains in contrast (like the Dark Hunters and Bagan).

Just for context.

Okay here is the entry. I will post it to the draft page as well. Also if you think I need to highlight words for any tropes or some of these tropes need to be changed then please say so.

I was born on a child farm: Headmaster Ranon Xinon, real name Clark P. Ganes, is a mysterious man with the power to steal people's life force and experiences. Ganes targets people with good lives and steals away their precious memories and experiences, causing his victims to revert back to children with no sense of joy, love or family. Ganes under the alias of Ranon Xinon abducts hundreds of children and takes them to the titular child farm where he treats them like livestock and slaves, then takes a child each night and feeds off their life force, leaving markings on their bodies afterwards. Ganes would also randomly poison some of the children's meals for no real reason but for pure sadism and forcing the children to eat bugs and dead animals to survive. Whenever a child can no longer feed him, he kills him by taking them into the fields and giving them the chance to escape the farm, only to be hunted and killed by rabid dogs, sadistically remarking that "if you run, they will kill you...or make you wish you stayed here with me." Years ago when he was a test subject of Hermetical Office, he stole the life force of one of their elderly members, and when one of their agents went to take on Ganes alone, he was attacked and reverted into the child protagonist Howard. When the office finally track down the farm, Ganes poisons half of the children's meals and hunts down each of the escaping children and murders them to cover his tracks. When Howard is finally able to trap him and supposedly kills him, Ganes instead of feeling remorse uses his last word to admit how proud he was for stealing all the happy memories and experiences of his victims and leaving them and Howard as nothing but ghosts.

Hey guys! I'm back from my break. What did I miss?

Anyways, yes to all of the candidates that got voted up and no to the ones that got voted down. And as the person who put that Snark and Nagito's quotes without consulting the thread first... Yeah, I say cut it. I was a stupid person back then. Forgive me if I add those quotes before the reevaluation started.

Also, good news guys! I finished skimming Jump Force story. I just gonna say it's a wasted potential but at least its rather paid off. PM me on who counts and me and miraculous will do the discussion on March tyvm. smile

And as for Ultimate Demon Beast, welcome again to the thread... Yeah, both All The Tropes and TV Tropes had a different criteria with the former being less stricter compared to TV Tropes. Same goes with the other website but let's not get into that.

Also, before writing on Brumeia, I've got another potential Blazing Souls Accelate candidate to bring although like Sauber... I'm unsure on this one and I don't really mind Sauber was voted down due to the lack of onscreen actions and I understand that.

Who is He/What Has He Done

Alright, so our candidate here is Gustaviannus or better known with other name as Guistabinuus. is the real main antagonist of the game and essentially behind all of the operations of Human Genome's plans to replace humanity with themselves. It was also revealed that he is one of the henchman of previous God called Mugen and he was revealed to bodyjack his body and seemingly follows Mugen's ideals.

He is first introduced fighting with one of the main antagonists in the previous game called Jadore while pitying him for his existence as a god. After the fight, Gustaviannus then put Jadore in a Fate Worse than Death by tormenting him with visions of Jadore's world that he tries to create getting obliterated to ashes because in his own words: "Killing him won't be fun"

After knowing the truth regarding the human genomes, Zelos and his companions set their feet to fight against Gustavianus while before the final battle he claims himself that humanity harms the world due to their violent impulses and then seeks to cleanse it from humanity, replace it with human genomes and then rules it as a god. Fortunately, after the final battle, Zelos manages to defeat him once and for all.

Freudian Excuse/Mitigating Factors

Alright. This is where you start leaning no because of what I'm telling you in this section and it's understandable. Gustaviannus is seemingly painted as a WIE that sees humanity as an animal who makes the same mistakes to the point the world is hurting because of them. But I have several issues regarding this. Mainly because of this dialogue that I want to present to you. It's lengthy but I still think its worth showing:

  • Zelos: So, you're the last of the human genomes?
  • Gustavianus: The successor of humanity. That was supposed to be our fate. But we received nothing. Because of that. I coveted...Power. And once we were released from the shackles of god, we arose to become a new species.
  • Isaac: Did you gain access to the Akashic Records?
  • Gustavianus: This world... No, this entire universe...The source of ultimate power is...Do you know why elementals came to be in the first place?
  • Isaac: They were the result of the planet healing itself.
  • Gustavianus: The world was suffering from the scars left by the destruction caused by humanity's countless acts of violence. The world use its own inherent power to regenerate itself. That's the power humanity lusts for. Humanity is far too unstable. It'd be all too easy for you to completely destroy the world
  • Zelos: I call bullshit. It sounds like you're just trying to justify world domination.
  • Gustavianus: I was given right to do so, it is my reason for existence. I was blessed by a higher power to be able to transcend generations and become the absolute ruler of the world.
  • Isaac: So why you don't tap into that so-called 'higher power'?
  • Gustavianus: Because I do not wish to destroy the world. Humans are nothing more than annoying insects. I hardly require my full powers to deal with them. I'm sure you've encountered Dena. She was designed by humans for the purpose of destroying the world. And you, and you (Referring to both Zelos, and possibly Duja and Aria), were also parts of that weapon. If you had united with Dena, it would've been the end of humanity. Your appearance here of course means that didn't happen.
  • Zelos:...
  • Gustavianus: However, humans will simply destroy themselves. And in the aftermath, I will establish my right to rule. It will be then that the world will truly begin to heal. Actually... It's probably not a good idea to let your parasite continue on. You as a species have only a short time left. Please let your fellow vermin know that their end is near. Judgement day has arrived. It is time for you to pay for your countless acts of violence.
  • Zelos: Are you finished being a self-righteous ass? Finished or not it's time for you to die.
  • Gustavianus: Ah, the misguided bravado of the small and insignificant. You think you can defeat me, the ultimate being? How amusing...
  • Nguyen Le: What other choice do we have?
  • Adelle: Humans aren't as short-sighted and ignorant as you claim.
  • Aria: The world is here for all life, not just you deem worthy.
  • Duja: The fact that the world is still here and healing itself... That alone proves that the world accepts us for who we are and that your delusional rantings are without merit.
  • Gustavianus: You are the last one I'd expect such a statement from... while i never had any intention of leaving you alive... I now know for a certainty that the weak must be eliminated. You have all gone against the fundamental truth of the universe. You have doomed yourselves to misery and despair

That's the full dialogue alright. In this dialogue, despite paints himself as a WIE, a lot of the characters in the game called out his bullshit especially on Zelos, Aria, Adelle and Duja's case. That's up to you to decide if he's a genuine WIE or just a self-delusional Knight Templar that got called out by other characters and heck, in the character page of Blazing Souls Accelate, it was also revealed that his WIE trait is a facade and is in it to challenge Mugen so yeah...

Heinous Standard

Okee dokee... Like I said on Brumeia and Sauber's EP... It's high pretty high. The only guys who could compare to Gustaviannus goals are Edward who also had a similar goal in mind and the scientists who tries to destroy human world by creating Dena. But Gustaviannus? I'm going to give him a leeway on him due to him trying to put Jadore's on Fate Worse than Death, trying to replace humanity with human genomes so that he could rule the world as a god and responsible of the worst human genomes like Brumeia and Sauber roaming around across the world? Yeah...

Oh and Brumeia can stay on where she is due to her mass enslavement niche and her crimes leans on a truly personal ones especially on Nguyen's case.

Final Verdict

In the end, I might say yes if not for his mitigating factors but right now... I'm really unsure on this dude. You might interpret him as a delusional knight templar but you could argue that his WIE traits are still there. So yeah, I'm torn on this one

Also, I'm currently using this color feature for the forums because why not. It looks cool :3

Okay, time for number four:

What is the Work?

The Bridge: Sound of Thunder, a side story set in the Mirror Universe from the Reflections comic where one of the Terran Defenders, Raiga, ends up in Mirror Equestria, faced with kaiju from a mirror version of Terra.

As with the Halloween specials, this is Tarb letting himself get dark.

Who is Empress Mio Odiato Cadenza?

Empress Cadenza is the Mirror Universe counterpart of Princess Cadence, and presently the chief villain of this universe's Equestria and currently in a Villain Team-Up with Mirror Junior and his cohorts, Battra Lea in particular.

As Cadence is a kind, warm, caring and loving High Queen, Cadenza is a cruel, cold, sadistic, and hateful tyrant.

What does she do?

Having been imprisoned after the purification of her aunts, Cadenza was freed by Mirror Junior, an Ax-Crazy and murderous alternate version of Junior. She proceeded to assist him and Battra Lea in nearly destroying Canterlot, only stopped by Mirror Xenilla and Destroyah.

Afterwards, she lead them to the Thicket of King Aspen. By the time the story catches up with them, the kingdom has been reduced to rubble and corpses by the three and more or less been handed over to Mirror Junior as his personal play thing while Cadenza sets up a study there.

With her allies, Cadenza has kidnapped, experimented on, and murdered unicorns, changelings, and deer. This is all in hopes of achieving the goal of permanently turning her kaiju allies into their true forms and letting them run rampant, with their current target being Manehatten, and her own personal endgoal being retaking the Crystal Empire from its current ruler, Princess Trixie.

With Mirror Starlight as her next potential subject, Cadenza gleefully relishes the possibility of gaining Revenge by Proxy on Duchess Chrysalis with her dissection and murder of her student. While Mirror Junior's rampage at the climax is his own idea, Cadenza provides the means and has no remorse over the city being razed to ashes, as that was their plan from the beginning and he merely accelerated it.

Even with Mirror Junior failing in the plan to destroy Manehatten, the trio continue their plans to threaten Mirror Equestria by story's end.

Fruedian Excuse? Mitigating Factors?

Cadenza is unique among her Villain Team-Up in that she lacks any. Junior and Lea both have them, but Cadenza is, in her own words, a "a cold hearted wretch who causes hatred and grief." I'll get into this more in Heinous Standards.

While she and Lea get along, it's more a shared love of suffering than genuine affection or caring towards each other, as both are murderous psychos.

The story she's a part of is currently finished and complete, and all indications are a proper sequel will be a long ways off, potentially after The Bridge itself is finished. So it feels fair to judge her now, and extremely unlikely anything will change.

Heinous Standards

Hailing from a Mirror Universe, Cadenza is currently the closest thing to this Equestria has to a Big Bad, and the only Equestrian villain present in the story. Ghidorah in Mirror Terra is the Big Good, so he's a non factor.

The three villains are all depicted as more or less the same level of monstrous. Cadenza gleefully assists them in all their atrocities and commits plenty of her own, and the current plan is to raze Manehatten to the ground and she assisted in trying to do the same to Canterlot already. She's also a serial murderer by the time we meet her, and intends to let loose multiple kaiju on Equestria.

So why only Cadenza and not the main focus villain Mirror Junior?

Mirror Junior has a Freudian Excuse: his foster mother was as cruel and hateful as the main universe's was kind and compassionate, and thus caused him to grow into the monster he ultimately was. Mirror Junior also genuinely cares for his Raiga on some level, and does seem to have some twisted care for Xenilla.

Battra Lea is a self proclaimed Omnicidal Maniac, but she's the joint reincarnation of Mirror Mothra and Battra, who wanted the extermination of mortal life and the biosphere respectfully, so Lea was more or less BORN with an instinctive drive to kill everything. Doesn't justify it, but she at least has questions of agency and has being an Omnicidal Maniac in her blood.

Cadenza is the only one of the three with no mitigating factors, and thus while all three are relatively equal in terms of how vile they are, she's the only one who completely qualifies for the trope.

While Junior did launch the attack on Manehatten in the climax on his own, he was merely pushing ahead a plan Cadenza was planning to gleefully help him perform anyway and she makes no complaint.

Final Verdict

I think she's a keeper. As a mirror version of Cadence, her traits make sense, and while all three villains are utter villains, Cadenza is the only one with no redeeming qualities.
