Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I got one more Magic the Gathering candidate to go along with Leshrac. I was originally going to do his partner in crime Tevesh Szat but he turned out to genuinely love his sister and her death sparked his descent into hatred and evil. However, I do have one that really comes into his own after he's freed from the influence of his masters.

Who is Lim-Dûl?

Lim-Dûl was once a mere soldier during Dominaria's Ice Age and fled from his squad when they were wiped out by a force of goblins. Fleeing through a blizzard, he came upon the ruins of the Conclave of Mages and found the ring of Mairsil the Pretender, the villain of the earlier Dark Age arc. Lim-Dûl wore the ring and became a powerful necromancer, but fell under the thrall of Mairsil in the process. He soon found himself with another master in the form of Leshrac, who further empowered Lim-Dûl in order to use his growing undead army to conquer the mana rich plane of Shandalar. While building the army for Leshrac, he would follow Mairsil's influence and kidnap and enslave the powerful mage Jodah who had defeated Mairsil centuries before. He used Jodah to research Shandalar for him, but the mage was rescued by his old friend Jaya and the pair went to the nations of Terisiare to unite them against Lim-Dûl. Despite the necromancer's reign of terror on the continent wiping out entire cities, the nations of Kjeld and Balduvia refused to cooperate.

This all changed when Lim-Dûl created the Knights of Stromgald to weaken Kjeld from within. Using agents to form the order as a political power in Kjeld, Lim-Dûl poisoned them all at a gathering and raised them as his slaves and had them try to assassinate Kjeld's king. This was the last straw, combined with the undead overrunning the nation's borders, and the Kjeldorans and Balduvians united and fought Lim-Dûl's vast army in the last battle of the Ice Age. A Mairsil-possessed Lim-Dûl fought Jodah at the battle's climax, only for Leshrac to arrive in a rage and sever the ring from his servant. Seeing the undead horde decimated and his invasion plans for Shandalar thwarted, Leshrac tore Lim-Dûl to pieces and shaped him into a sentient ball of flesh. Leshrac remade his servant when he later went to Shandalar, but was beaten back and forced to flee by the plane's guardian Kenen Sahrmal. Lim-Dûl was still powerful enough to injure the weakened guardian, but was beheaded in the process yet survived by transferring his soul to another body.

Now fully free of both Leshrac and Mairsil, Lim-Dûl proved to every bit the monster as his master when left to his own devices. Around a decade later, Lim-Dûl resurfaced on Shandalar without a vast undead army at his command and intended on conquering the plane to satisfy his own ambition. With Sahrmal missing and presumed dead, Lim-Dûl performed a systematic genocide on the entire plane of Shandalar, wiping out all life where he could find it until only one city remained. Ardestan, the last city, soon came under siege as well, but a weakened Sahrmal was secretly training two apprentices to overcome the necromancer. The oldest apprentice, Azar, created a spell to entrap Lim-Dûls spirit inside his own body and create a barrier around the city. Lim-Dûl foresaw this and countered the spell with him fighting Azar for control over his body. Buried away to preserve the barrier, Lim-Dûl eventually won control and arose again many years later, but met much more organized resistance from five guilds backed by the second apprentice. In what would become the Wizard's War, Lim-Dûl was defeated a final time and his soul was imprisoned inside an artifact used to empower the Great Barrier.

Coincidentally, again many years later, the Planeswalker Arkazon would come to the plane to begin his own bid at conquest and told the Guild Masters one of them could rule Shandalar using the Spell of Dominion, but it actually was designed to destroy the artifact and bring down the Great Barrier. His plot succeeded but he was later cast out, yet the important fact here was that the destruction of the artifact also destroyed Lim-Dûl's soul meaning he could never rise again.

Mitigating factors?

At first, you could ascribe his more horrible actions to being in the thrall of more powerful beings, but once freed from the their control he set about committing genocide on an entire plane. This establishes Lim-Dûl always had his own ambitions and even sought to use Jodah's research to break away from Leshrac, so he's much like Tezzeret in that regard.

Heinous Standard?

If it was just the initial stuff from the Ice Age story arc, it likely wouldn't be worth looking into, but wiping out most life on Shandalar certainly puts Lim-Dûl up there with the worst in the franchise, especially for his relative power level.

Final Verdict?

I think this is [tup] and makes number 7 for Magic: the Gathering.

So I have another horror film one.

What is the Work

Poor Albert & Little Annie, better know as I Dismember Mama is a horror film.

Who is Albert and What Has He Done?

Albert is an extreme misogynist who views all Women as being whores who deserve death. In the past, he tried to kill his own mother and he was sent to a low-security mental hospital as a result. The hospital was not prepared to deal with this though as he nearly strangles a nurse to death and as a result is being transported to a higher security prison.

He does manage to kill one of the employees though and escapes, threatening to kill his mother over the phone. His mother manages to get aware but when Albert arrives back at his home he encounters the maid Alice who he kills after molesting.

He then encounters Annie an eleven-year-old girl to who he develops a disturbing attraction to. He plays with Annie and takes him out to places. He nearly rapes her as well but instead grabs a random woman off the street and tortures and kills her. Annie witnessed him doing this though and runs away and during it, Albert imagines her wearing makeup and concludes she is just like the rest of the women and attempts to kill her (it doesn't make any more sense in context trust me). He ends up falling to his death as a result though.

Does he have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Alright let me first cover a few things that aren't disqualifying but I should bring up. Despite being in a mental hospital at the beginning of the film it is made clear he isn't insane just extremely misogynistic and he is only in there due to having money. He does not care about Annie at all despite playing with her and acting nice to her he only views her as an object to be admired due to her childhood innocence, and once that in his mind goes away he tries to murder her. Also while the film is quite graphic in some ways it isn't made just to shock its audience though it wasn't super well done it does try to give a message about pedophilia. Despite the rather strange title Albert is also not portrayed sympathetically at all.

Now there is one moment in the film I need to discuss that did have me a bit unsure on the idea of him counting. here is this one scene where Albert is watching Annie sleeping and his disturbing attraction manifests, he takes his shirt off, and honestly, at this point, I thought he was about to rape her and the narrative is definitely framing it that he was going to. However, he then just doesn't do it, for seemingly no reason. I mean yeah he obviously does not care about Annie as I mentioned but this is an odd thing that you might be able to argue as a Pet the Dog moment. Though considering that he, later on, tries to kill Annie with no hesitation I could see this also being an Ignored Epiphany or a subverted redeeming quality.

Does he meet the Heinousness Standard?

This one also does merit further discussion. Albert is in a horror film so he already has to deal with a high baseline to pass. He has only three kills (The worker at the hospital, Alice and some other woman he picks up) and three attempted ones (His mother, the nurse and Annie). He does also often commit sexual crimes on his victims before killing them or at least attempts to and Annie is a child who he also attempts to rape. It is technically just enough with what we have established but it is rather weak.

When it comes to the competition he is the only real villain in the film.

Final Verdict?

I am not as sure, mostly for that weird possible mitigating factor and heinousness, I will leave it up to you guys to decide. If it ends up rejected oh well at least I tried.

[tup] Benny, Mantee, Master, Lim.

[tdown] Albert, I saw the movie once and I remember him being way too Ax-Crazy.

What is the work? The semi-canon Devil May Cry Light Novel prequel that focuses on Dante's career as an easy-going Badass Pacifist mercenary named Tony Redgrave, who hangs out at Bobby's Cellar with other mercs looking for jobs. The novel explores Dante's personal struggles from the past with his inner demons and literal demons that have been mysteriously lurking around the city, and the dilemma that comes with being a do-gooder in a profession where violence is a must, all the while trying to keep his real identity a secret. If things couldn't get worse for Dante, he has to deal with the arrival of a peculiar psychopath who seems to know too much about him.

Who is he? Gilver, a bandaged Blood Knight who joins Bobby's Cellar and quickly proves himself to be just as skilled as Dante, is initially introduced as The Rival before revealing himself to be something much worse. Appearing to be a strange but amicable swordsman who treats the other mercenaries with respect, Dante slowly uncovers evidence of his real bloodthristy nature, including the fact that Gilver brutally murdered an innocent amateur sleuth by mutilating him and how Gilver always manages to make a bloodbath whenever he accepts a job, leaving a trail of dismembered bodies in his wake—in one notable instance, Gilver killed thirteen other assassins by tearing their hearts out, something that managed to disgust Dante himself. Slaughtering dozens upon dozens of criminals and other targets in several brutal ways with his katana, Gilver's unparalled bodycount and sadism inspires many other professional killers to return to the old days where wanton destruction was the norm. What's worse than Gilver and his weird fetish for behaving like a demented Serial Killer? He's the one responsible for summoning the demons that have been plaguing the city and causing even more carnage, going as far as to admire demons possessing several partygoers and forcing them to eat their own eyeballs, calling it a "pleasant sight".

Turns out Gilver is obsessed with Dante and has been killing his friends just to isolate him—he was behind the death of his best friend and the man's hospitalized daughter, having given her and the entire sanitarium to demons as their playthings—rising through the ranks of Bobby's Cellar was just part of his plan to hurt him further, as he wastes no time in feeding them to demons. By slowly migrating more and more demons to this plane of existence, Gilver wants to create Hell on Earth by merging both worlds and sacrificing all of humanity, why you ask? Gilver is not even human, but a demon supremacist who despises Dante for being a "half-breed mongrel". After a long and exhausting battle, Dante finally kills Gilver and puts an end to his genocidal plan once and for all, but not before finally unmasking him: Not only does Gilver have a similar amulet, the bandages hide white hair and a face that strangely resembles Dante's own face... He was his twin brother, Vergil, all along... Until Before the Nightmare retconned him into being one of many Black Knights created by Mundus to assassinate the Sparda brothers, Gilver just happened to share Vergil's appearance, making him the Evil Knockoff to the Evil Twin?

Mitigating Qualities? None, the clones created by Mundus are independent and more than able to develop emotions—as seen with Trish, a clone of Dante's mother who rebelled against Mundus—Gilver is no exception, he managed to be more bloodthristy than his master and completely deviated from his task to do his own thing, almost sacrificing the world in the process.

Heinous? Trying to rule or destroy humanity is nothing new to this franchise, I'm pretty sure all the Big Bads had world domination as their plan to some degree or another. What makes Gilver stand out is how the demons are presented here: They're not silent mooks, but homicidal lunatics who enjoy torturing humans and then killing them in the most sadistic ways possible just to prolong their suffering, they possess people by twisting their bodies and worst of all? The hosts themselves can feel the pain—Gilver thinks demons have every right to do this nightmarish stuff to all humans on Earth.

Conclusion? [tup]

Yes to Gilver. Leaning no on Albert, reading the wikipedia plot summary, there are references to more to his relationship with his mother and that he reverts to a childlike state when interacting with Annie, which the EP doesn't reference at all and I'm concerned he's being spun as much more sane than he actually is. I could be persuaded but things that ought to have been addressed were not.

So help me understand here Ordeaux... is wikipedia mistaken? Are these scenes and implications not in the film, it paints a very different presentation than is given here.

Oh no he does do that, I had assumed it wouldn't be an issue though as there are other villains that are like that. In the film though his relationship with his mother is barely explored beyond him hating her and wanting her dead. I wasn't trying to spin it I just didn't think it was an issue, I will admit not the best at judging insanity.

If he were an immature sadist I wouldn't take issue with listing him but from reading the plot summary he seems to be almost incapable of controlling his actions in certain circumstances, almost like he's so unwell he just becomes an object in motion when presented with certain scenarios... besides the age reversion it seems he tries to pick a woman up and then a sudden sadistic outburst leads him to killing her. I'm not getting the sense he's deviously plotting these things so much as a disturbed man prone to erratic changes in behaviour.

Sorry for being a day late with this EP. I was busy with other things and needed to watch it again to confirm a few things.

With that being said, here it goes.

What’s the work?

Hilda and the Mountain King is the feature film continuation of the Netflix show Hilda. Kicking off right after the season 2 cliffhanger, Hilda switched places with a troll child named Baba, turning her into a troll and the child into a human. While she learns more about their kind with the help of a motherly troll named Trylla, Hilda’s real mother Johanna tries to find her whilst dealing with the overzealous Erik Ahlberg of Safety Patrol. Through this predicament, Hilda comes across a troll by the name of Trundle, a giant who has been trapped in a cave, who promises her to turn her back human. As it turns out, however, his imprisonment was not a bad thing.

Who is he and what has he done?

This requires a bit of backstory, so bare with me. Thousands of years ago, trolls roamed the countryside freely under the guidance of a mother of all trolls. After the mother troll rested underground she found that a village had started up above her, and decides not to disturb it. Over time, it grew into Trolberg, leaving the mother troll trapped under the ground, but she took no mind to it as long as she could see her children. Unfortunately, the human residents took the trolls to be attacking, driving them off and depriving them of their mother.

Time passes, and the trolls are united under a king, who just so happens to be the aforementioned Trundle. Unfortunately, his rule was defined by his desire to destroy Trolberg, causing a schism with him and his brother, eventually ending in Trundle being ousted, his eye taken, and banished.

Upon meeting Hilda, he promises her to turn her back if she does things for her. After testing her by asking for a drink, she gets to removing the bells for him (which hurt trolls) before finally having her get his eye from the ruined castle.

After accidentally having a vision from entering the eye and meeting her mother again, she and Baba turn back as they meet their true mothers, and Trundle takes his eye back.

And finally, this is where the EP truly starts. After taking his eye back, he leads a troll army on the city, incapacitating his brother, whilst he stands in front of the ruined city walls.

Here, Hilda realizes Trundle’s actual plan; he plans to goad Erik into killing him, where then the troll mother will rise to protect the rest of her children, completely destroying Trolberg and killing everyone who lives there in the process.

After doing so successfully, Trolberg begins to experience shakes, under Hilda uses the eye on Erik to show him what would happen and make cease fire.

Heinousness?

For the show itself? He easily passes. No other character attempts the level of destruction and death he does, and any other potential candidates (like the child-eating Grelka or the chaotic evil Void) aren’t given any characterization. For the general standard… it may be a “one act that crosses the MEH” type deal, but I think it’s enough. The movie makes it clear that it will wipe the entire city off the map and take everyone in it with them.

Mitigating Factors?

This is where things get more confusing.

First off, agency is a non-issue. The trolls have their own language and it even says outright they are all individuals with different ideas.

Secondly, his relationship with his aforementioned brother I don’t think is an issue either. Trundle immobilizes him but I just saw it as him getting on with his plan at best.

Thirdly, he presents himself as affable to Hilda, but again, nothing really implies it’s genuine; he found someone who can kickstart his plans and that’s that.

Finally, there is his relationship with the mother troll and troll kind as a whole. When talking to Hilda at first, he’s able to convince her to stay with Trylla by talking about the love of a mother, and it sounds fairly genuine.

However, this is another case where I argue he’s simply using the situation to his advantage. He doesn’t show any real affection to her otherwise and the trolls that follow him are simply there to ensure the troll mother gets up. There’s nothing implying he cares for troll kind.

Final Verdict

Gotta be honest, I went back and forth with this one, because he lacks certain CM traits like sadism, but there really is nothing preventing him from not counting, barring different interpretations. I’m going to settle on a tentative yes for the sake of it, but I won’t begrudge anyone who thinks otherwise.
