This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Hello, I am a bit surprised to find myself in the penalty box again. I have not received any messages from moderators recently, and I have been more conscientious regarding the indentation guidelines. I would very much like to know why I'm deserving of another time-out. Thanks.

I haven't gotten any messages about why I've been suspended, but I can figure out from my recent activities before the suspension hit that it was for adding images without consulting image pickin threads. Some misunderstandings made me underestimate how necessary those were, so I apologize.

If there's anything else that caused my suspension, let me know.

It's been some time since I was suspended from editing for an edit war. I now have a better understanding of the rules. I realize that I need to make a case, and the powers that be can't always respond immediately, but I thought the suspension would have worn off by now. Isn't there a statute of limitations on this?

Hi, I've been suspended for over a year now because of an indentation problem in an article (specifically, DC League of Super-Pets). I tried to get this sorted out as soon as I was blocked: I've been told on how I should have made my edit, but I couldn't figure out the logic on trying to fix it when I couldn't do it on the article itself (besides the instructions I'd been given didn't feel clear enough to me), and eventually I got frustrated enough that I just left it alone and decided to spend a few days without even logging on to cool off and try again. But then those days turned into months...
I feel like I'm ready to give it another try, especially since I've had a few blunders somewhat worse than that in my history in here, and those never warranted any punishment.

I was about to edit a page today, but I noticed my account has gotten the suspended message and I believe it's to do with the site's indentation rules. I did get two messages from a user the other day about indentation issues in some recent edits I did.

I was not aware of these new rules and I'm sure a few other users have the same things to say for why they were suspended from editing as well.

If that's the case, then I have taken some time to read the pages on how to properly indent pages and I would love to have my editing privileges reinstated.

So, earlier today, I received a message saying that a page I made 3 years ago for a voice actor had problems with grammar. This is not the first time I've received something of this nature; on the day of my suspension, I saw a similar message regarding a different page I made a couple years back.

I had previously assumed that posting images without consulting Image-Picking was what got me suspended, but I'm now wondering if it may be a combination of different mistakes on my part. If possible, I'd like to know, as I don't want to keep making these blunders.

I was recently suspended for what I believe was a series of small violations and one terrible gag which all come together in me being subtly reminded to behave and pay attention to what I am posting on this wonderful page. I took it as a lesson and I hope that I'll be given a chance to show that I took my lesson.

I just got notified when I tried to edit a page that I've been suspended from editing. I'm not entirely sure why but I would like to appeal it.

I had a bit of a spicy moment in the Chuggaaconroy thread that got thumped right before the thread got locked (I didn't realize talk about the controversy was walking such a red line, it was my first - very long post sharing my thoughts on it and I had missed it was already verging on unacceptable). But I'm only banned from editing tropes, not from posting on the forums, so I can't know if they're related.

I've gotten some pings in the past about making mistakes with example indentation, but only rarely and I figured that probably wasn't severe enough to be punished for it? I dunno, I'm just overall confused.

If you were missed in this batch, please post your appeal again.

~Tropers/ry4n [1]

Hello. Sure, but you were thumped and suspended for heading into unpleasantly familiar dogwhistle territory in your posts - tossing around "woke" and blanket statements about "pandering to" certain demographics, for two. It's not constructive, and "this bad" is especially unwelcome in the Diversity in Media thread. So you need to not make such arguments, or at least be really cautious about phrasing.

~Tropers/amateur55 [2]

No. Armenian genocide denial is fringe and "Good riddance" to deportation is hardly civil. You're either profoundly ignorant of the history between Armenia and Turkey or you're fine with ethnic cleaning. Either way, we don't want this here. Bye.

~Reidling 1234 [3]

Great. Those are the rules. You're released.

~Shinn Bidan [4], [5]

Okay, that was a lot of image changes. But they do predate the notifiers, and you know now that should go to Image Pickin' for future changes, so we'll let you go on that.

You also have some older notifiers about adding pages to indexes and a couple recent ones about correct Example Indentation. Do you have any questions about either? Can you reformat this one so the bullet points have the correct indentation?

  • The Other Darrin: Misa was voiced in the PC game by Mariko Onodera, but was replaced with Satomi Koorogi for the Sega Saturn version.
    • The vast majority of the cast from the games were replaced for the OVA and the radio dramas.
    • The game's remake features an entirely new voice cast.

~Tropers/Rya [6]

You were asked earlier to explain what an Edit War is and how to avoid it, since that's what you're suspended for.

~Tropers/twofacetoo [7]

People deleting stuff because they don't like it is common. If an entry needs to be rewritten for the problem to go away, it's not on other users to do the work for you.

Lashing out at the user for deleting your entries and sending you notifiers does not help matters. The message contained no threats.

You could go a different route with fixing indentation. Say, asking "Can you guys show me what a good entry looks like?"

The edit that the grammar notifier is pointing at is also incorrectly indented and contains word cruft. It was not about the playlist linking.

You have construed all of those messages as personal attacks, and they are not.

~TNO Enjoyer [8]

Okay, then. Please practice in sandboxes, use the Preview button, ask other tropers for help, all the good stuff. And it would be good of you to run new entries through Get Help with English to ensure they look good before adding. You may go.

~Rm 74 [9]

We care less about exact dates and more that you've been contributing and being a productive member of the wiki. You need to have a "portfolio" of Ask The Tropers responses, cleanup thread postings, etc. before we can consider lifting your suspension.

~Lord Araghast [10]

Hello. Correct, this is your first suspension on the wiki. You've racked up several Crosswicking and Indexing notifiers, so we sense that you're perhaps not heeding them. Do you have an questions about how either works, and why they're important?

~Wary Bloom [11]

Welcome back. You were suspended years ago for severe grammar issues on the wiki, and this appeal hasn't given us high hopes that you've improved in the meantime. If you want to add entries, please practice by posting potential edits in Get Help with English. The assistants in that thread will correct any grammar mistakes they find. Once you are able to post several times in a row with no major corrections needed, we can discuss allowing you to edit.

~Oreo Cookie 11 [12]

Not quite correct. What's more important than merely waiting is paying attention to the instructions on the page (look for them at the top among double percent signs) and going the Image Pickin' Forum if you want to re-add or change an image. You would be talking to the users on the forum, not just asking moderation— we work by consensus here, and that involves the community. Does that make sense?

~Tropers/N2002 [13]

Hello. I can see that you've managed to post examples that didn't need to be corrected, and you have a better understanding how to write entries with full context. Since there are some errors in your writing, e.g.

  • I had problems with english —> I had problems with English
  • but I have made progresses on —> but I have made progress on

I would suggest continuing to use Get Help With English before putting anything on the wiki, especially for more complicated entries. You may go.

~Miss Conduct [14]

Great, that's a hefty list of forum contributions. You've been here a few times now, so you need to be careful in your posts and wiki edits. Honest mistakes and large wiki activity are probably going to get suspicion cast on you no matter what, so it'd be wise to gather consensus, double check your reasoning, avoid making "edge case" edits, etc.

You are released. Happy troping!

~Bean 780 [15]

Here is the post you're looking for: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=5cma6iojg5o27puhulc24sje&page=1248#comment-31176

You should post multiple proposed entries to the Get Help with English thread. We're hoping that you're able to learn from the helpers and be able to post three times where each time, a helper responds to you saying no corrections are needed.

~Tropers/darknessRising [16]

A couple dozen posts to TLP drafts. Not bad.

I trust you are definitely going to discuss any editing conflicts before re-inserting/deleting anything. It's unlikely we'll consider a third edit war appeal.

Your wiki editing suspension is released. Remember that professional tone, and happy troping.

~Sergeant Bane [17]

Correct. 1. You can't rely on links as context, so you have to describe the pose. 2. The villain specifically has to be doing something villainous, and in doing so, accidentally do something heroic.

3. is this edit. Can you see that the entry "Izogie and Amenza seem to function as Co-Lancers to Nanisca" doesn't explain the Lancer trope and how those characters fit the trope?

~Axe 23 [18]

Not without explaining what an Edit War is (your suspension is for edit warring on Victoria: A Novel of 4th Generation War) and how to avoid committing one. Also, you've been pinged to a cleanup thread, and it'd be nice if you don't ignore people trying to talk to you.

~Eugenio Scamardella 02 [19]

Hello. Yes, you were suspended for edit warring over potholes on the Kirikou and the Sorceress page. You added entries, someone removed some links from an entry, and you put those links back. You should not be redoing any of your edits without discussing with others and gathering consensus. Since you want to avoid this mistake in the future, according to Edit War, what are some avenues you can take to discuss proposed edits?

~Tropers/Toot [20]

One post needed corrections, here. Here is another. Note the "This violates Zero-Context Example" there as well — all examples need full context of how they fit the given trope. Please keep practicing and posting on the thread.

~Filip 04 [21] and others

Yes, you were suspended for the needless posting about animal cruelty, and also for impatiently bumping threads and demanding answers. If no one wants to answer your questions, you are not permitted to keep bugging the thread about getting them answered. You've also posted several times here, when one post suffices.

~Tropers/futuremoviewriter [22]

Noted. Don't worry, April was not a due date, but rather a minimum time required before you could re-appeal if you wanted. If you need more time to contribute more, take all the time you need.

~Worst Otaku Ever [23], [24]

Sticking something in the edit reason changes nothing. What people read is the example, not the edit history. Someone who doesn't know Persona 5 should be able to read your entry and explain traits of Yamato Nadeshiko is and how the character fits this trope. If you cover the trope and show the description to someone, they would not be able to guess what was being described.

Her actual self dresses in this manner, which is a stark contrast to her cognition's Phantom Thief attire's more aristocratic look.

~Tropers/DRCEQ [25]

You were suspended for your Edit War in the same Bittersweet Ending bit on Paranoia Agent. Multiple times. How can you avoid an edit war in the future if you disagree with someone's change to your entry and want to revert it? Edit reasons, as noted, do not count as discussion.

~The Dragon Demands [26]

That is correct. Remember that lone second and third level (**, ***) bullet points is never okay. You are released.

~Dragon Ball [27]

The last response to you (scroll down) explained what you were suspended for, so you need to read Edit War and answer the question.

~Tropers/Aipom-pom [28]

Hello. You were indeed suspended for incivility. We don't buy "They started it" as a defense. If you find someone else is being rude to you, you should not respond in a nastier manner; you report (holler) that behavior.

You may go.

~Tropers/MM_Crusader [29]

Good that you're posting at Get Help With English. We're hoping that you're learning from the helpers on the thread. You should be able to post several times in a row with the helper responding that there are no mistakes. I'm still seeing the the responses to your posts issuing corrections.

~Rm 74 [30], [31]

Our stipulation (which hasn't changed from the last time we responded to you) is that you needed to have a significant history where you contribute and demonstrate that you know the rules. You haven't posted anywhere except a handful of CM posts and don't have enough started queries in Ask The Tropers. You should also be participating in other people's queries. If you can contribute in those areas (a lot), then we'll consider.

~Big Bad Shadow 25 [32]

You've gotten some rules thumps for posting videos without context. You should explain what the links you're posting are about. Yes, even "reaction" links.

~Tropers/Klaiopoiso [33]

Yes. It was "dusted off" by our Trope Repair Shop, i.e. community consensus, which found that Daylight Horror is Not a Trope. Thread here. You seem to be unfamiliar with the forum, but you should not be undoing what was discussed and decided upon in such a thread. Okay?

~Tropers/surgoshan [34]

Actually, you were suspended for not understanding Example Indentation despite the many notifiers sent to you about indentation, e.g. this lone dangling third-level *** bullet point. Please read the policy page so you can see why doing that is wrong.

~Tropers/Melendwyr [35]

You seemed to be genuinely appealing your posting ban until you decided to let us know that you're not going to play nice.

~Tropers/Cordite-455 [36], [37]

We all know AI-generated anything is a touchy subject, and if you want to discuss something you loathe, do so constructively without doomsaying. You were also thumped multiple times for advocating piracy. Also forbidden.

Since you said you'll improve and updated saying you're getting the mental health help you need, you can have your posting privilege back.

~Spaceman Spoof [38]

Not indentation this time. We've noticed a pattern in your edits that breaks the Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment, among them declaring Covid restrictions overblown, calling removal/renaming of statues connected with slavery or segregation bad, and grumbling about the "increasingly politicized" Super Bowl intruding on enjoyment. The wiki exists primarily to trope fiction and is not the place for taking sides in real life debates or stirring controversy. So... avoid all that.

~Beast C [39]

Hi. Yes, you should not be changing images unilaterally. You were suspended because you've gotten a few notifiers for Example Indentation. Can you read that policy page to understand how to indent examples properly, and fix this addition you made (post it here):

  • Adaptational Dumbass: Downplayed. While not exactly a moron, this Peter seems less scientifically inclined than most other Peter Parkers. It's heavily implied that Peter's interest in science phased out after not being bitten by the spider, considering how much of his Teen Genius knowledge was applied to his crime fighting, most famously his web-shooters and his spider-tracers.
    • That said, he is way more careless with maintaining his Secret Identity than his other younger selves: within one month of being Spider-Man he's caught with his pants down when his daughter walks in on him eating ice cream in full costume. Meanwhile, both 616 and 1610 Peters were able to hide their identities much better and much longer.

~Not So Evil Eye [40]

Suspensions do not wear off, because just waiting one out does not teach you how not to do the thing that got you suspended in the first place.

Here is the explanation and a question. We want you to read the Edit War page and be able to answer the question.

~Andy LA [41]

Welcome back. If you're aware of "worse blunders", then you should read up on the relevant policy pages to avoid making those.

A refresher. Can you fix the indentation in the below entry/entries so they're indented correctly? It may need a bit of rephrasing, but not much.

  • Who could forget Brainiac's attire from the various Super Friends series: A pink-purple polo shirt with white collar, and just a pair of black briefs? What were they thinking? This was hilariously lampshaded in a classic Cartoon Network ad bumper:
"Look, I just want some pants. A decent pair of PANTS!"
    • Toyman also looked pretty ridiculous, with a three-pronged mask and a suit with pointy shoulders curving up.

~Tropers/Luigitehplumber [42]

Our Example Indentation rules are not new. Please read up on them so you can see why examples such as

* Adored by the Network: The series has always been popular in the United Kingdom and was heavily adored as much as Family Fortunes.
  • Challenge also frequently broadcast episodes of the series, occasionally taking it off. Nowadays as of 2024, this has been averted (see below)

are not permitted. Your above writeup also violates Examples Are Not Recent and "Don't Refer to Other Items on the Page". That is also a Trivia example, so "aversions" and other Playing with a Trope labels should not be mentioned.

~Tropers/pittsburghmuggle [43]

Hello, you're suspended for not indexing pages, e.g. WMG.Three Thousand Years Of Longing and Headscratchers.Three Body Problem. We want you to understand How Indexing Works. The indexing rule goes for subpages like WMG and Headscratchers as well as work pages.

~MJ Trooper [44]

Hi, you were suspended for re-adding (more than once) the same air bike example on GameBreaker. The Legend Of Zelda Breath Of The Wild without discussion, which makes an Edit War. According to that page, if you added something, it was deleted by someone, and you disagree with the deletion and want to put it back, what can you do to avoid an edit war?

~Comrade Tom [45]

Hello. Yes, your page edits were sizable and seen as unhelpful and in-jokey. We do want content on TV Tropes to be breezy and possibly even fun, but you should be careful with your edits, and for big changes, get the support of other users, all right?

~Nara Numas [46]

Hi. You weren't suspended for your spicy moment on the Chuggaaconroy thread (although it was thumped for a reason), but rather that you have notifiers about Example Indentation, including one from last week. If you don't have questions about indenting examples, can you post a correctly indented version of this Executive Meddling entry (rephrase parts of it if you need):

  • The Lion King:
    • In a positive example, The Lion King (1994) was going to have a total Downer Ending akin to Hamlet, but it was forced to be rewritten because the executives at Disney didn't like it.
      • Likewise, after an early version of Mufasa’s death scene was shown to Studio head Jeffrey Katzenberg, he pointed to his dry eye and said, “See this? I’m not crying!” A more positive example than many, since whatever version they showed to him, the scene in the finished film stands among Disney's all-time biggest Tear Jerkers.
    • The Lion King II: Simba's Pride: Several short, but important scenes were axed, including the original (much more emotionally charged) last moments of Nuka and Zira. The reason for the cuts were due to them being perceived as not child-friendly.
      • The idea that Kovu was actually Scar's son was dropped to merely being hinted at. This was done so that Kovu and Kiara wouldn't be Kissing Cousins by the end.

I will admit that I was arrogant and thickheaded to believe that I was above the mods. I have indeed failed to heed the messages of Mods, and with my suspension I have been humbled. This matter is similar to an unruly child who was never disciplined and thus felt that they could do whatever they wanted without fear of reprisal. I shall be more mindful of their advise and warnings from now on.

In regards to my failure to index, it was probably a mix of laziness that I was hoping that someone could do it for me and thinking it was not important. I am very much aware of it's importance now and will ensure that any such pages will be properly indexed in the future.

Now when I am not being lazy about it, I do know how to index pages. In regards to Crosswicking, I have read from a TV Tropes forum that this is the way to do it:

For example, Angels of Death (2021)

I added this trope example in the above page

  • The Cameo: Mephiston appears in Episode 4 where he gives Kazarion counsel before the latter leaves for the Deathwatch.

So if I am correct, Crosswicking means to also add that trope and sentence to the trope page The Cameo ?

If that is the case, then I will keep that in mind from now on.

Thank you very much!

No questions on indexing come to mind right now. I likely either didn't know about the indexes at the time of making the pages, or I forgot to immediately index them after making them. Whatever the case, though, I think I've gotten better about adding pages to indexes as of late, so I hopefully won't make that mistake again.

I believe this should be the proper indention for this example:

  • The Other Darrin:
    • Misa was voiced in the PC game by Mariko Onodera, but was replaced with Satomi Koorogi for the Sega Saturn version.
    • The vast majority of the cast from the games were replaced for the OVA and the radio dramas.
    • The game's remake features an entirely new voice cast.

On another note (not sure if these played in a role in my suspension), I looked over the recent messages I received about proper grammar, and I think the problem was that I had put "seiyuu" instead of "voice actor" in one of them, and I forgot to put an "a" in the other one. If this is indeed the case, I apologize.

Anyways, thank you for your reply.

~Miss Conduct — As a followup to the previous mod response, your Short-Term Projects and Long-Term Projects suspensions were accidentally left in place when your other suspensions were released. That's been fixed.
