Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

What is the work?

Star Wars Resistance is Anime Sgue animated series set in time of the Sequel Trilogy. Following New Republic pilot and son of the senator of Hosnian Prime Kazuda Xiono as he is recruited into resistance and sent to covert mission on fueling platform of Collosus on remote planet Castilon in which First Order has expressed interest. Working as a mechanic in a garaže of retiret rebel pilot Jarek Yeager (despite having no experience in a job, or really much of thing beyond pilotin).

Second (and sadly final) season sees a bit of retool, Colosus (revelated as space station) is on a run from the First Order in a period before the Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker, Kat’s friend Tam has joined First Order and Pirates who First order used for Monster Protection Racked against colosus are now forced to work with them.

Who is Nenavakasa Nalor? What has she done?

Apearing in episode “The Engineer” Nenavakass or Nena for friends is Blue nikto who after being enslaved by Pirates as a child became ruthless and self interested. Hired by First Order she spend days tracking Collosus until she send a fake disstres signal. Brought to Collosus by Kaz And Synara San (one of pirates) she immediately starts sabotaging station, by fixing it. Working with Bunny-Ears Lawyer mechanik Neeku (green nikto) they become fast friends and Nena sorta celebrity for fixing station.

Disliking the pirates and needing distraction to finish her sabotage, she fakes reading that pirates are draining energy from Collosus. While Kaz attempt to shot down ship of pirates which leads to him and Synara learning of her aliegence, she and Neeku have a heart to heart with with her almost admiting her sabotage to oblivius Neeko. However by time Kaz finds Neeko and tells him truth it is too late, First Order is here while Collosus is siting duck (whatever that is) and Nena is ready to get away. Offering Neeko chance to come with her, she somehow sadly gets away with money from First Order hoping that Neeko understand that it was nothing personal.

Is she Magnificent?

Somehow subdued but yes she is expert manipulator and engineer who tracks down Collosus befried everione (except pirates) and sabotages the ship while geniunely fixing it.

Now she get found out by traying to Frame pirates because her dislike for them, but it still had a reason (distract heroes while she finishes sabotage and divide people of Collosus), she had a simpathetic reason for disliking the pirates, and she eventualy turn out to be Right that they can’t trust pirates (expect Synara), and it is still Near-Villain Victory. While First Order oficrpers Pyre and Tierni do agree to kill her if they ever see her again, there is no implication that ever happened, with her getting away Scott free, paid, no worse for wear.

Is she a bastard?

Once again subdued but yes. She falsely befriends people of Collosus while selling them out to faschit regime for money. That said she does geniunely devolp bond with Neeko, has Freudian Excuse, and she isn’t sadistic about it.

Conclusion.

Lean yes

Bull, you're allowed to say that. It's your opinion. Having not seen the movie, I can't really comment myself beyond reading the EP and voting.

I posted a Shrek tree in my previous post. It'll go to the drafts once they're unlocked.

  • Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: Professor Sada (''Scarlet'') or Professor Turo (''Violet'') was Arven's parent who discovered and utilized the Terastilization phenomenon while exploring the Great Crater of Paldea. The professor proceeded to use of the Tera crystals to create a time machine with hopes of building a paradise for their family, using the machine to bring over Pokémon from the past/future, in spite of their threats to Paldea's ecosystem. Even with their untimely death as a result of their research, their numerous security systems and fail safes, including forcing their AI copy to battle any threat to the machine and, in the event that would fail, locking all PokéBalls except their own, would defend the time machine from the protagonist and their friends, demonstrating the Professor's willingness to allow the destruction of the region for the creation of paradise.

Making his entrance as an eccentric yet dangerously clever madman that has taken over Radham Academy, one of the Duke's first acts is to root out the rebel spy Avis and effortlessly overcome her various traps, all while taking time to evaluate the members of the Lambsbridge Project. The Duke later orders the complete extermination of the city of Lugh upon learning of it being home to primordials, matching wits with Mauer throughout the battle and even usurping control of the monsters to turn them on the rebels. Although rendered brain-damaged from the fight, the Duke quietly recovers while posing as comatose and makes plans to stop the Infante's genocidal ambitions, providing aid to the Lambs in return for them retrieving the resources needed to further heal his mind. An honorable Noble Demon beloved by his subjects yet dreaded by his enemies, the Duke gives his life in the end to save Sylvester from the Infante's wrath, deeming his own death to be worth ensuring the rise of the next generation and a better world.

Working as Cynthia's key operatives during the Battle of Whitney, Sanguine's enhanced eyesight makes him one of the Lambs' most dangerous enemies as he expertly snipes down his foes, and his quick wits allow him to discover the Lambs' second infiltration of the city after the rest of his team has been whittled down. Upon learning that Sylvester and Jessie have become fugitives, Sanguine hires a group of bounty hunters to track them down, recruiting one of the rival Dog and Catcher's own mercenaries to betray them and aid his team. Sanguine once again uses his expert marksmanship to keep the duo on their toes and track their movements from extreme distances, constantly repositioning himself to keep an eye over the entire city and initiate sneak attacks on Dog and Catcher so his allies can capture their targets alive. Ultimately, Sanguine decides to let Sylvester go after Jessie is infected by the Ravage plague, viewing his despair as vengeance enough for his compatriots.

Time for...

What's the work?

The Dragon Prince is an animated series on Netflix. The series is set in a fantasy world, centered on Prince Callum, whose mother Queen Sarai married King Harrow, with Callum's little brother Prince Ezra as heir to the throne. Sarai died in an attempt to harvest a dragon's power that Harrow led to save their kingdoms. Unfortunately, this has angered the elves of Xadia, resulting in Harrow's assassination. A coup results in Callum and Ezra on the run with the long lost dragon prince, the two running off with an elf named Rayla and pursued by the corut mage Viren. It is then Viren is contacted by a mysterious figure...

Aaravos.

Who is Aaravos?

An ancient elf, one of the first of his kind and a mighty mage imprisoned in a magical realm. Aaravos is a Startouch Elf who possesses incredible power and gained great respect among all races: human, elf, and dragon. But Aaravos was also highly ambitious and ruthless, who not only taught human kingdoms magic, but manipulated them. Every grand conflict was the doing of Aaravos, who whispered in the ears of the rulers and promised them their hearts' desire. Discovered by the Dragon King Avizandum and Queen Zubeia, Aaravos was locked away by the elves and dragons, Avizandum keeping a magic mirror so he might monitor Aaravos, and the elves feared him so much they struck his name from history...

Then after Avizandum died, Viren took the mirror. Aaravos contacted Viren, cautioning him about magic, helping him take further control and detailing Viren's daughter Claudia as a "future asset." Aaravos functions for the first seasons as Viren's adviser and mentor, slowly cautioning him on advice of how to find the heroes, and also steadily laying the seeds for his return. The big issue is Aaravos doesn't know where his prison is and wants a way out. Aaravos is also laying his means to enact his schemes, cautioning Viren to surrender to the Sunfire Elves and their Queen Khessia...and then springs his trap.

Aaravos corrupts the capital, takes control of the high priest, mocks Queen Khessaa and burns her alive, happily taking over the source of the Sunfire Elves' power. Guiding viren to hunt Azymondias, the Dragon Prince, Aaravos indicates that Zym is an important component to his spell. Viren fails and dies, resulting in Viren spending two years tutoring and guiding Claudia to assist her father. With the heroes focused on that, he reveals he planted a seed to possess Callum himself. Aaravos denounces the heroes, points out their flaws and releases Callum...before shattering his mirror to ensure he can't be tracked.

And saying he's going to return.

Mitigating issues?

I see not a one. Aaravos is polite, elegant, refined, cultured and always composed. You'd almost forget he's a villain with how pleasant he is. As we know more of him, he grows increasingly sinister without losing one scrap of refinement. Aaravos is cool, in control and a plotter, weaving wheels within wheels within wheels to free himself. His ultimate goal is admittedly obscure, but he's working to something very, very well.

Aaravos literally manipulated the entire world and isn't ready to let a little thing like being a Sealed Evil in a Can stop him. He never loses control of himself and the only time he indulges in villainy is when he kills Queen Khessa with clear relish and enjoyment.

I can't call him a sadist, though. He never enjoys evil or pain for its own sake. The writers have indicated he's more of a WIE, calling him "disliked isn't the same as bad." and he's rather upfront with everything, even telling Viren he's the untrustworthy villain and to beware of him.

Conclusion?

EASY keep.

When an American crew attempts to harvest vibranium in an underwater deposit, Namor kills them leading to Wakanda being accused of the terrorist attack. Electing to execute Riri Williams for her invention, Namor effortlessly bypasses Wakanda's security system to make an ultimatum with Shuri and Queen Ramonda. Despite his willingness to provoke a war between Talokan and Wakanda, Namor expresses genuine respect for Shuri even consoling her over the loss of her brother and ends the film in triumph revealing that his surrender was a calculated move to push Wakanda into a corner so that when the time came, Wakanda would be forced to ally with him.

What's the work?

Stargirl (2020) is a great TV show focused on the titular character and her stepfather, Pat Dugan, as they set out to reform the Justice Society of America and avenge their predecessor's deaths at the hands of the Injustice Society.

Who are Sportsmaster and Tigress?

A loving couple who moonlight as dangerous assassins, the Crock family are the best characters in the entire show. As members of the Injustice Society, the two aided in the battle against the JSA, removing the greatest roadblocks to Icicle's "New America" plan that would brainwash half the country into accepting racial equality, free healthcare, etc.

Years afterwards, as the ISA put the final parts of their plan into action, the Crocks are pillars of the community in the town of Blue Valley, raising their daughter Artemis to be the best there ever was when it comes to athletics. Sportsmaster also owns a gym, and when he first meets Pat, he immediately goes out of his way to befriend him and get him on a fitness regimen. However, they're getting a bit bored with civilian life, expressing their murderous urges by killing any football coach who dares to bench their daughter during a game, and are itching to return to supervillainy. Fortunately for them, Icicle needs their help, and after chastising them for killing another coach sends them to attack a communications company and retrieve codes to a satellite. This is where they first encounter the new JSA... and utterly thrash them, escaping with the codes with little difficulty.

Some time later, the ISA learns their new enemies' identities and sends the pair to kill Stargirl's parents. Sportsmaster confronts Pat, still remaining friendly to him and even offering pointers on his fighting style, before he's taken out from behind in a sneak attack by Pat's son Mike. Tigress goes after Stargirl's mom, Barbara, only to be beaten off by Stargirl. The two regroup to lick their wounds... only to get confronted by fellow ISA member the Fiddler, who goes on a massive rant about how they're morons, sadists, and bad examples for their daughter who aren't fit to be parents. That last one gets her an arrow in the chest courtesy of Tigress.

Anyway, the two are beaten and arrested in the ISA's final fight with the JSA... not that prison would ever stop them. Artemis regularly visits them, complaining about the horrid conditions of her new foster family (Macaroni and cheese? Basic cable with no football Sunday pass? Animals!), so the two decide to break out to provide moral support during her college football tryouts. They leave a trail going down south for the cops to follow while they return to Blue Valley, kidnapping Mike to get the cooperation of the Whitmore family and promising to break back into prison when they're done.

Season finale rolls around, a demon tries to end the world, and the Crocks once again break out to help stop him. However, instead of going back to prison again they exploit some unspecified loophole to secure their legal release and move back in as the Whitmore's neighbors, where they spend the next few months repeatedly breaking into their house to cook them healthy breakfasts. Tigress also begins bonding with Barbara, teaching her how to fight and intimidating her misogynistic boss into backing off in exchange for getting advice on how to... you know, be a normal civilian who bakes and doesn't murder people.

Anyway, season three. Their old ISA ally the Gambler is murdered, and the Crocks soon become suspects when it's discovered he was blackmailing them over some other evil stuff they never got charged on. However, after a fight with Starman where they for the most part stand toe to toe with him, they clarify that, despite really wanting to, they refrained from bashing his brains in because they really do want to give the whole good guy thing an honest shot. After this, they even help investigate the Gambler's murder, tracking down the other people he was blackmailing and dangling them off rooftops.

More conflicts ensure when Icicle's parents, seeking to avenge their son's death, begin planning to go to total war with the JSA. The Crocks resolve to put a stop to this... by having a calm, polite talk with the Mahkents, leveraging their friendship with Icicle and his desire for a brighter future for his own son Cameron to convince them that he wouldn't want this needless conflict. And it actually works! Communication! It can solve any problem!

The Crocks are heroes, beloved by the community and treasured by their friends. Unfortunately, no good thing lasts forever. On a midnight jog, the two discover a bunch of flyers for Sportsmaster's gym coming from an open sewer manhole. Correctly guessing someone's looking for a fight, the two descend into the sewers... to be confronted by a still alive Icicle, who very much does not want peace and kills the two before they can interfere in his plans anymore.

Fortunately, they get their vengeance. Tigress' lessons come in handy when Barbara arrives to the final fight with a crossbow, and Artemis later captures and kills Icicle by burning him alive with some of her father's explosive jelly.

Mitigating qualities?

Let me restate: the Crocks are the best characters in the entire show. They're clever, absolute beasts of fighters, and absurdly hilarious with how little social skills they have. While the two are a bit sadistic in the first season, their later appearances solidify them as a wholesome couple who will dote on their daughter one moment and laugh about how they filled a victim with arrows the next, and when they consider you a friend they will go out of their way to ensure you're living your happiest, healthiest life—no matter how much you wish they wouldn't. Prison is such an insignificant roadblock that they nonchalantly break out and then back in with regularity, and even though they don't survive the events of the show their friendships and lessons to their daughter are more than enough to avenge their deaths in the most epic way imaginable.

Verdict?

Easy keepers.

A bit late due to work, but nonetheless I made Craig's draft!

  • Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People: Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective: Craig, seemingly nothing more than Uzi Bazooka's right hand The Cheat, is revealed to be behind the events of the episode, planning to kill Dangeresque and friends so he can bask in the resulting fame. Creating the robotic Uzi to frame Dangeresque Too?, he has Cutesy Buttons kidnapped while Dangeresque is helping her with a job, proceeding to stay one step ahead of the detective while systematically capturing his allies. Seemingly cornered in his space station, Craig reveals that he lured them there so that he can trap them and have them blown up, making his escape and having Uzi Bazooka guard the exit. Even after being beaten, Dangeresque and Dangeresque Too? barley escape, with Renaldo successfully being killed in the process.

Or did I?

(Yes, yes I did)

  • Andor:
    • Luthen Rael is the unfettered, original mastermind of the entire rebellion against the Empire. Inspired to fight against the Empire's tyranny, Luthen has used his position as an affable antique shop owner to gain political connections and mask his true goal of igniting an uprising across the galaxy. Drafting soldiers like Cassion Andor and politicians like Mon Mothma alike to his cause, Luthen meticulously schemes countless minor blows against the Empire, building up to the masterful heist of the quarterly payroll for an entire Imperial sector. Luthen knows full well that his actions are prodding the Empire into more brutal oppression against the galaxy, and considers it a worthy cause so long as it inspires more and more people to rise up against the Imperial dictatorship. Able to personally outfly and outgun a squadron of TIE fighters as smoothly as he can talk himself out of any situation, Luthen's actions pave the way for the ultimate destruction of the Empire in the years to come, all as he acknowledges that his crimes ensure he is damned to never see the better galaxy he strives for.
