Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

What is the work?

Y'all of Cthulhu is a Call of Cthulhu: Down Darker Trails comedy/horror actual play by Ain't Slayed Nobody, centred around a rag-tag posse who sets out to bring notorious outlaw Colin Brock to justice only to find themselves in over their heads in eldritch mayhem.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

Nyarlathotep is an Outer God, using his myriad forms to spread chaos, corruption, and forbidden knowledge — at times at the behest of other Outer Gods and at times for his own sadistic amusement.

During his reign as the Black Pharoah Nephren-Ka, Nyarlathotep forced a woman to commune with other Outer Gods like Yog-Sothoth and Daoloth, causing her to have a series of prophetic visions and go insane in the process. Three of these prophecies pertained to the birth of a new eldritch god, one not of chaos but of order, who would destroy Nyarlathotep and the others.

An unknown amount of time later in the area of what eventually became Olvido, New Mexico, Nyarlathotep infected the newborn child of a cultist of Shub-Niggurath with his essence intending to make that child his minion when they grew up. When the cult's leader demanded a sacrifice hoping to be reborn as one of the Black Goat's 1000 Young, the child's father — having somehow learned of the prophecies and desiring revenge on Nyarlathotep — offered up his infant in order to bring the prophecy into fruition. Shub-Niggurath ate the baby, causing Nyarlathotep's essence to combine with her own and conceive Mgepgathg — the prophesied god of order. Realizing he'd done an oops, Nyarlathotep helped Shub-Niggurath abort the baby and sealed it away in a dark star, dead but dreaming of freedom and revenge.

Untold millennia later, outlaw Colin Brock learned of Mgepgathg and began plotting to free it in exchange for power, ritualistically imbuing infants with Nyarlathotep's essence to mark them as potential vessels for Mgepgathg to indwell. Amused by this, Nyarlathotep kept an eye on them — particularly Ellie Bishop, one of the Investigators. When archaeologist Kate Caldwell stumbled across one of the surviving prophecies related to Mgepgathg, Nyarlathotep attacked her — though Kate was rescued by her mentor Professor Henry, who inducted her into the cult of Shub-Niggurath to keep her safe from Nyarlathotep's wrath.

When the now grown-up Ellie was captured by Colin Brock and set to be turned into Mgepgathg's vessel, she called out to any gods that may be listening to help her... which Nyarlathotep did by plucking her soul/consciousness into the Dreamlands while leaving her body to drown in a sarcophagus full of blood. Appearing as a gunslinger-themed Humanoid Abomination to mock and gaslight her, Nyarlathotep informed Ellie he'd been watching her adventures with interest — despite not having lifted a finger to help her when she was almost killed by ghouls — and agreed to help her kill Colin Brock... if she agreed to serve as his Deputy Sheriff for all eternity. Nyarlathotep summoned Colin Brock's soul/consciousness to the Dreamlands, then stood back and watched as he and Ellie duelled to the death. Despite Nyarlathotep lending Ellie his power — both so that he could claim her as his minion and stop Brock from freeing Mgepgathg — Brock won and tore out Ellie's heart with a spell. However, Nyarlathotep refused to let Ellie pass on and transformed her into a wraith, sending her out into the Dreamlands to impose his will on its denizens.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

Nyarlathotep is smugly Faux Affably Evil, maintaining a veneer of mocking politeness while gaslighting Ellie when she feels her physical body's lungs filling up with blood and calling her a mere deputy sheriff. While he does help Ellie fight Colin Brock by summoning the latter into the Dreamlands and lending Ellie his power, he has a vested interest in doing so since Ellie promised to serve him if she won and Mgepgathg being reborn would be bad news for him. And, of course, even when Ellie loses the duel Nyarlathotep holds her to their bargain and makes her his minion.

Are they bad enough?

Nyarlathotep only directly appears in the final episode, where Ellie calls upon him, but he is talked about and mentioned by Kate's journal and Colin Brock — being the root of a lot of the suffering humanity has endured over the millennia. Mgepgathg — the Greater-Scope Villain — is Nyarlathotep's progeny, which also makes him indirectly responsible for all the suffering and bloodshed Colin Brock and his gang-turned-cult cause in service of Mgepgathg.

Final verdict?

I'll leave it up to y'all to decide.

[up][up] Most of comedy aspects come from the players bantering and joking with each other both in- and out-of-character, rather than the story itself. Still, if you want to judge for yourself, Nyarlathotep directly appears at the 10:30 mark of the following video and is present throughout the rest of Ellie's sections (24:04 - 32:10, 43:27 - 53:32):

Welp, checks out. [tup] to Nyalathotep.

Alright, so this work only has two episodes so far and now got a channel dedicated to it (the second episode was uploaded to the new channel six days ago but has been available on Zeurel's main channel for a little over two months), but I feel the actions of this character are still very intense enough for her to count before the first season even closes.

What's The Work?

Monkey Wrench is an animated series by Zeurel starring two Mercs.

Who is Dr. Agness? What Did She Do?

Dr. Agness is a criminal with who specializes in weapons development. Her goal was to create the most powerful weapon ever and make a fortune off of it. She eventually discovers the Lythops and learns of their properties. Viewing them as the key to creating her superweapon, she began to send mercenaries to hunt them down for her. Although she manages to get a few for her developments, she wasn't satisfied. She needed all of them. However, the Lythops feared her and dealt with the mercs she hired.

She then hires the Monkey Wrench duo to gather the rest of them. In order to ensure their cooperation, she disguises herself as an official from L.A.W. Science and tells them that the planet of the Lythops is set to implode in on itself in four hours with their job being to save the last of the endangered Lythops before it is too late. As the duo progress, she keeps an eye on them through a communicator she gave them up until they enter a cave which breaks reception.

While in the cave, Beebs starts having suspicions about the job due to the lack of tectonic activity that one would expect on a doomed planet along with the fact she only hired them to save the Lythops specifically when there are many other creatures on the planet.

The duo eventually find the Lythops and inform them all of their planet about to kersplode with them having arrived to save them, loading them all into a box except for the ruler who chooses to ride on Shrike's shoulder.

After that, they bring them all to Agness who then reveals her true intention as she talks about the Lythops' properties and how they can make almost impenitrable armor with the crystal Lythops being capable of cutting through warships before she breaks the box open over a grinder, killing all the Lythops and absorbing them into her hoverchair.

Seeing this, Beebs puts the pieces together and realizes Agness was never from L.A.W. Science. Agness effectively admits to this while calling the mercs to be nothing more than pathetic wannabes. However she does admit that thanks to them, she had all the data needed to replicate the the elements of the Lythops and decides to reward them by using the power they helped her gain to kill them, chucking their ship which infuriates Shrike.

Shrike: My new paint job! Oy PUTA! Grind up an entire species on your own time! But when you wreck my ship, IT. GETS. PERSONAL!

With the mercs now worked up into fighting her, Agness starts off holding back to demonstrate how tough her defenses are all while taunting them constantly into attacking her. While Beebs is able to make her stagger, that's all he can do as his attacks still don't damage her.

Soon, Agness notices the crystal on the back of Shrike's head. Interested in whatever properties Shrike has, Agness pins him down so she can dissect him. However, the Lythop Ruler, realizing he can't just cower, saves Shrike and offers to serve as his weapon. Agness, realizing the Lythop to be the one thing that could undo her hard work, starts taking the fight more seriously.

Through the teamwork of Monkey Wrench with help from the Lythop ruler, Agness is defeated and brought to justice. However, her actions left a permanent mark on the poor Lythop ruler who, thanks to her, is now the Last of His Kind.

Mitigating Factors

This work is comedy, but I can only think of one moment directly from Agness that would be a funny moment. Specifically when she taunts the duo over being unable to hurt her. This one moment is not enough to really lessen how serious she is though, and it only further demonstrates how much of a Smug Snake she is. It also has nothing to do with her most severe crime of genocide which is treated completely seriously.

One other thing to address. There isn't anything indicating Agness didn't know the lythops were scentient. In fact, given how she is shown to already have a few tools made from them before killing the rest, that means she is already well aware. Not only that, but when she notices the Lythop ruler state that he won't let her harm anybody else, her shock is not on the fact he is sentient but on the fact he is a crystal one.

She's also clearly meant to be a one-shot Villain of the Week, so chances of us seeing her again in future episodes are extremely unlikely.

Also, while her facial expressions may be silly at times, that's just natural with any character animation by Zeurel. Guy can get pretty insane with facial animations (and it is glorious).

Heinousness Standards

Now while the series is still ongoing (albeit one of those series where episodes have huge gaps in between releases), I am convinced that Agness will continue to stand out as she killed off an entire race with moderate resources (she had to hire some mercs to gather them up for her showing she didn't have the resources to do it herself).

Pretty sure that is not an easy thing to surpass in the Heinousness department. The only way she wouldn't be heinous enough is if the show were to somehow give us another genocidal villain with even less resources than her (good luck with that in this series as the first episode was pretty tame, and the third looks like it will be tame too).

Verdict

I can't wait for season one to conclude before doing this when episodes are branched so far apart. [tup] this poser.

[up] I don't recall it being said that we are supposed to wait. It's more that it is recommended to wait (for the reasons you are prolly thinking of). Agness's actions are pretty extreme though. Even if the one wmg on the series' wmg page were to be confirmed, I read Walking City OCT to know that the Beast very much has a lot more resources than Agness on account of being an almost godlike entity.

I actually have seen plenty of cms where a series or arc is still ongoing.

So if an evil character can be uproariously funny, he can be locked out of the Complete Monster thing? But if his/her actions are played seriously, he is a Complete Monster.

Let me pose the question differently: if a character we sympathize with becomes a victim of a villain's actions, and the villain shows no remorse, than does the villain become a Complete Monster.

If Jack Horner, say, had murdered Pocahontas with a monstrous grin on his face, does he become a Complete Monster because his psychopathic behavior hurt and killed a character we come to sympathize with?

Ok, this is basically a EP to take away my doubts.

Previously on…, we cut Admiral Kusakabe from Martian Successor Nadesico because his entry contained innacturacies (Kusakabe didn't personally oversee the experiments on Akito and Yurika—leads of the original show) and more importantly, that he showed genuine concern for his equally-fanatic militia despite being a fanatical militarist himself.

Heinous guy, but not a CM. Seriously, Kusakabe's actions in both anime and The Movie are heinous enough to count as a CM with his deliberate sabotaging of peace deals and the Successor's crimes in The Movie, he would could if not for his concern towards his loyalist soldiers.

However there was a guy that I was...unsure back then. I just want to get rid of my doubt.

Introduced in Prince of Darkness, The Movie of the series (whose failure ended up any plans to turn the series into a franchise), here is one of the villains of the film.

Also, what is happening with the wikias and this page, because this guy is listed in the character sheet of Nadesico with a different name of what I see in lists of characters from Dub Wikia or Ani DB.

Seriously, he gets called Yamazaki in the very movie. What happened?

Who is Profesor Yamazaki?

The leading Mad Scientist of the Martian Succesors, The Remnant of the Jovian Federation—villains of the original show, a Imperial Japan inspired fascist junta of fanboys of Gekiganger 3

Yamazaki is a key figure on their plan to take over the Hisago Plan, a vital teleportation route build in the colony Amaterasu and eventually destroy it.

This plan involves the Boson Jumps seen in the series and thus, the Martians attack Akito and Yurika's shuttle during their honeymoon to kidnap them and study their special attunement with the phenomenon.

He is the lead of the experiments, that mutilate Akito until he losses his sense of taste and smell (particularly cruel given his career as a chef) and send Yurika into a permanent coma where she in bombarded with happy thoughts to harvest her power for the Successor's plans.

He stripped Yurika from her clothes and kept her in this way even when she was turned into a Humanoid Abomination, something that made even his coworkers uncomfortable and explicitly consider sexual harassment.

During the film, Yamazaki's experiments are used for top soldier, Hokushin, to perform assasinations and sneak attacks to cripple the Earth Forces.

By the end of the film, the plan is thwarted by the reunited crew of the Nadesico, who manage to ruin the Successor's plan and force them to surrender. Yamazaki doesn't appear in the end, but considering how the Succesor's ended the movie with a complete surrender by their leader and the death of their strongest soldier, Yamazaki is no Karma Houdini at all.

Mitigant traits?

There are some jokes about him that are basically "this guy is a creep who believes knowing love but doesn't even understand what love is".

What really is notorious is his screentime. He only has some scenes, but he establish his personality very well on them, enough to avoid being a Generic Doomsday Villain.

Even the jokes really just highlight how much of a creep he is. Being unfazed at being considered a sexual harasser. And of course, the scene where he explain how his experimentation with Yurika works is played completely serious.

Heinous Standard?

Yamazaki lead the experiments that were mistakengly attributed to Kusakabe, taking away Akito and Yurika's happy ending in the original series. Those experiments being the entire reason for The Movie, as they are vital key for the attacks of the Succesors, who endanger to destroy a entire colony—openly shown with civilian population—because they refuse to accept their surrender.

Comparing him with Kusakabe is normal, but Kusakabe is his boss. And more importantly, Kusakabe's worse crimes were commited when he was Vice Admiral of the Entire Jovian Federation, while Yamazaki is the chief Mad Scientist of The Remnant

I think this part is a pass.

Verdict?

You decide

[tup] to Lord of rings guy, Allister, Nyarlathotep, Dr Agness (love that show) and Yamazaki

[tup] for General Allister.

Based on the EP alone Nyarlathotep doesn't sound bad enough for me. He infuses one baby with his essences and torments one women whom he later turns into his minion. That honestly doesn’t sound bad enough for an Eldritch Abomination . Especially compared to Colin Brock who does the same thing to multiple infants. So [tdown].

[tup] for Dr. Agness.

[tup] for Profesor Yamazaki.

NTF raises a good point about Nyarly. Abstain for now.

Yes to Burudagath; Allister; Agness.

Lean yes on Yamazaki.

Seeing as Final Fantasy XVI is open for discussion soon, I'll just say that anyone who EP's anyone from that game, feel free to poke me to get me to weigh in and vote, I've finished the game and am eager to see candidates discussed here.
