Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

What is the work? Resonance Days, a Madoka Magica fanfic set in an afterlife where all Magical Girls and Witches go after their death, although witches lose their memories.

The story follows Kyoko Sakura and Oktavia von Seckendorff (formerly Sayaka Miki) as they try to adjust and explore this new worls.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

Reibey, an incubator (same species as Kyubey) who was banished to said afterlife because the other incubators consider his capacity to feel emotion to be a mental illness, and also he's so insufferable even they don't want to deal with him.

In the afterlife, Reibey established the Void Walkers faction, a faction of magical girls who are tired of living, think they're in Hell/Limbo, or just want out for whatever reason. Through the puppeet queen Oblivion, Reibey promises those who serve him best that they will get the release they yearn for.

Since then, the Void Walkers have conquered large swaths of the world, waging a Forever War against The Alliance. Most of Reibey's followers are terrified of him, as he brutally punishes failure, and you can't even die to end it. Leaving is worse, however, as it would mean giving up your one shot at a true death.

In reality, the salvation Reibey offers is a lie. Neither he nor his puppet queen Oblivion can offer true death. In reality, Reibey merely has a way to destroy their bodies, leaving their souls disembodied and stored in a Soul Jar for use in his own mysterious plans, which is not confirmed yet but implied to be the permanent destruction of the afterlife.

The soul jar also contains the shades of the heroes' previous incarnations (timeloop schenaniganz, long story), which he has enslaved and consults for information. They are not happy.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

As mentioned, Reibey was essentially Reassigned to Antarctica by the other incubators, because Kyubey is a real piece of shit. While he was probably not super sane to begin with, being exiled to a realm where time moves AGONIZINGLY slow (~one month of real world time to seven years of afterlife time), where the only company is witches and magical girls, most of which hate him for being an Incubator, and knowing they did this for the crime of having emotions cannot have done wonders for his mental state.

From what little we know of the first Oblivion (currently on number 6), she did really have the ability to destroy souls, and she worked with Reibey of her own volition, so the faction he leads did at least start out with good motives.

Are they bad enough?

While the setting is full of bastards, I believe that Reibey is the worst. Any other monster is either working for him, replicating his thing on a smaller scale, or simple killers limited in scale. Reibey leads a cult that controls a large part of the world, made up of suicidally depressed teenagers whom he controls by offering them the chance to die, and punishment when they fail.

He's a sadist who takes enjoyment in punishing his followers, and likes to think about how the souls he has imprisoned are forced to serve him against his will and have no hope of ever getting their bodies back. He's a hypocrite who looks down on the childish and emotional humans he manipulates but is emotional, petty, and prone to tantrums himdelf. He has no issue hurting children, be they the mentally underdeveloped Nikki whom he tortures for failure, the 14 to 16 year old heroes, or the 11 year old he has installed as his latest puppet queen. He was rude to Elsa Maria who is my babygirl and deserves the world.

While all of this is done by other characters (dockgauts are sadists, Lily brainwashes her followers, the Madam runs a slave ring), none do it on the vast scale that Reibey does.

The only characters I think who can exceed him in villainy are the Incubators, but they hardly factor into the story as more than Greater-Scope Villain, and have the excuse of being Amoral and emotionless. Reibey has the capacity for compassion and love, he's just a jackass.

Final verdict

Reibey is a cultleader who's cult is based on manipulating suicidal teens. While his goals are hitherto not completely known, the fact that he has done all of this with express cruelty and even in private moments expresses nothing but disdain for the girls he manipulates, torments, and enslaves makes it clear that his common nickname of The Rat is very accurate, if insufficient to describe the depths of what a complete monster he is.

[tup] Overlook Hotel. I remember E Ping a fanfic version of it alongside a fanfic version of Rose with no redeeming qualities years ago, funny that its main film counterpart would end up counting years later. (Though Rose is still only a keeper in the fanfic and not in the book/film for pretty obvious reasons.)

As for Reibey, the fic last updated on the 25th and it sounds like he's still an active player so I say wait and see for now. However, you can reserve the fic when it does conclude.

Hey everyone, just finished Like A Dragon: Ishin, pretty great game and I glad it lived up to the expectations I had for it, especially since I was really excited for it to finally come to America. I'm waiting for Awesomekid to finish the game as well before we discuss any potential keepers, but feel free to PM me about it.

Yeah, I tend to be more generous when it comes to when it's okay to propose somebody from an ongoing work than some people, but Reibey definitely needs to be postponed. The effortpost literally talks about how his motive has yet to be confirmed.

FWIW, I'd advise against any April Fool's proposals. Some of the past ones were genuinely funny but their existence also went hand-in-hand with the 'social thread' aspect the mods want dialed back down.

That being said, I remember Lily the fairy, an Arc Villain from the same fic who has long been defeated, to be a good potential candidate, so while I would prefer for the fic to be completed in case something about her comes up later, I feel like she would be better to propose at this time.

Like, to celebrate tomorrow I would advise anyone to just make a genuine proposal about a Monster Clown or something.

Talked this one over with Ravok, Riley and Star….

What's the work?

The Youtube channel The Stupendium run by nonbinary singer Greg Holgate / the Stupendium. A music channel where they produce a number of excellent songs, typically based on video games.

Today we have a special case though! As we are going to be looking over a collaboration between Holgate and another singer with a similar theme, Dan Bull.

The song 'End of the Line' is based on the video game Choo-Choo Charles, the game itself is a damn fun Indie Game based on dark parodies of Thomas the Tank engine. You go to a mysterious island being haunted by the demonic spider train 'Choo Choo Charles'. As well as the buisnessman Warren Charles III and his cult.

But onto the song proper? These 2

Who are the Cultists / Conductor and Stationmaster?

Either a Composite Character of the numerous cultists in the game, or a pair of particularly nasty ones running their own tiny operation; the duo are a a Conductor and Stationmaster who are implied to work for Warren. They are a hammy pair of sociopaths who were part of the group that unwittingly released Charles. The 2 have a special way of avoiding being eaten by the beast, they struck a deal with him. They would kidnap locals from the island and then, at 'tea time' they would feed them to Charles.

They have apparently done this for quite a while, bringing up some of their former victims as they chase and capture a new one. They tie him up and explain his fate before seemingly giving him to Charles for death.

In both versions of the Outro, it ends the same. One member of the duo seems to snap out of a daydream, remarking on the 'strange dream', hinting that the events of the song were All Just a Dream….and then this is disproven. As the man reading the newspaper in the intro is picked to be the newest sacrifice. With them having tied him up and leaving him with a sign saying 'For Charles'.

They then presumably continue to do this.

Are they bad enough?

Initially I was a little concerned with Offscreen Villainy. And if we didn't have those updates a couple years back that would probably be an issue. But with them? I think their is handily enough for them. Pretty much the whole song we explicitly see and hear about them vividly describing their operation and how destructive Charles is. They are established to do this regularly, having a special 'tea time' arrangement where they give a victim to Charles. And most importantly? They also give some descriptions of a few of their previous victims.

"You might say we’ve got a loco motive To provide the train with a load of groceries Locally sourced from the local folk, dear Granny’s s’posed to host, although she’s toast when the smoke clears!"

"If killing a priest, a vicar, a grocer or postman or three is villainous? Well, what’s it to me? You probably see the feast is imminent!"

Mitigating Factors?

So, the reason they feed people to Charles is because otherwise Charles will eat them instead. This is not played for sympathy, in any way shape or form. The 2 are gleeful sadists who relish what they do and make sure to mock the victim they capture in the middle of the vid with the fate that befalls them.

As brought up before, it is implied they are working for Warren Charles III from the game. As there is a picture of him in the train they ride in. However nothing implies any sort of genuine loyalty to the man.

The one thing that could be an issue, is with Bulls characters specially. In the outro, when leaving the tied up guy to die he says 'Poor guy' while Stupendium's Stationmaster says to him 'Don't get too sentimental, we still have to give breakfast for the morning service'. I cannot quite tell if this is mitigating or geniune sympathy for the victim, or just an off-hand comment said in jest. Given how he is characterized in the rest of the video. Nonetheless, in the version of the video on Dan Bull's channel? It is basically the same but with the dialogue altered. So now he simply says how it was a good thing they the victim up or else they would have lost 'it.'. So if it is mitigating in that version? We can just have different write ups for each channel's YMMV. With the one on Stupendium's page being solely for the Stationmaster and the one on Bull's being for both of them.

Final Verdict?

I was initially a little concerned but grew pretty firmly comfortable with them after some feedback from the others and thinking on it more. I'll leave it to you whether they both count in both versions or if only the Stationmaster should be up on Stupendium's YMMV.

[tup] The Overlook Hotel.

[tup] Goulet.

So...let's talk dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs Attack! is a 1988 collector card game released by Topps, parodying 50's sci-fi dinosaur movies, inaccuracies and all. The cards tell a storyline about a scientific experiment gone wrong, and an invasion of bloodthirsty dinosaurs led by what fans nickname "Dinosaur Satan" - The Supreme Monstrosity.

While this is technically my first tabletop proposal, the series had a comic book miniseries that faithfully adapted the original storyline, with some Adaptation Expansion. The comics are what I'm proposing from.

With this, I introduce the Supreme Monstrosity itself.

Who is the Supreme Monstrosity ? What does it do ?

The devil-like patron deity of the dinosaurs, the Monstrosity's spirit lingered since the extinction of the dinosaurs, wanting it's "children" to rule the planet once again, and bidding it's time for when technology advances for the right moment.

In the present day, a brilliant but troubled scientist, Elias Thorne is planning to present a major scientific breakthrough, from his space station The Prometheus - because naming something after a Greco-Roman titan, can only mean good things. Thorne has created a "Time Scanner", which can project images from any point in time across the globe, with the intent to observe a prehistoric earth.

Unknown to Thorne's crew and critics, The Prometheus is being haunted by the Supreme Monstrosities spirit, who is tampering with the time scanner from behind the scenes and personally haunting Elias. Elias has also performed ESP experiments on himself, and seemingly gained a degree of psychic powers. This allows Thorne to hear the Monstrosity's laughter, and for the entity to perform psychic feats. Thorne and crew are under the impression that Thorne himself is the one doing this, and the presence he's been feeling is just Thorne's troubled subconscious.

When the time comes for Thorne's presentation, the Supreme Monstrosity reworks the Time Scanner to not only project the images of dinosaurs into the modern world...but pulls the dinosaurs themselves back through time. Under the Supreme Monstrosity's influence, the dinosaurs become ravenous and blood thirsty, causing wanton death and destruction across the globe; while our heroes on Earth and in space try scramble to fix this mess, Elias is approached by another presence warning him that he not only brought the dinosaurs back, but their "guardian devil".

In a dream, Elias is approached by the benevolent Saurian, from a bygone civilization of "humanoid dinosaurs". The Saurian exposits the nature of the Supreme Monstrosity, and its plans, but Elias is reluctant to believe it. Similarly, those aboard the Prometheus, including Elias ex-wife Helen, suspect that Elias is subconsciously doing all this as a form of suicide. The Monstrosity starts appearing around the ship, killing all but Elias and Helen through heart attacks.

Elias and Helen manage to rework the Time Scanner to pull the dinosaurs back to their own time. Before they can, the Monstrosity itself appears and grabs hold of Thorne, who has Helen trigger the scanner. The dinosaurs are pulled back in time, killing them, Elias, and presumably the Supreme Monstrosity, while a surviving Helen returns to Earth.

Mitigating Qualities ?

This thing is the heinous standard; it's the one who engineered the titular dinosaur attacks, which got thousands if not millions of people killed across the globe, all in messy and vicious manners - men, women and children being crushed, ripped apart and eaten alive, all throughout the series. There are moments of dark comedy - this is a sibling series to Mars Attacks! - but the Supreme Monstrosity is played for horror, even for how absurd a "dinosaur devil" is.

My one pause is questions of agency. The Saurian exposits that dinosaurs are sub-intelligent animals, and don't  have any sense of morality - though the Saurian's existence and the Supreme Monstrosity indicate there are higher beings among them, and we clearly see the Monstrosity is intelligent enough to manipulate and interfere with technology while using the dinosaurs as it's foot soldiers.

It's also implied that the dinosaur's blood thirsty-ness comes from the Supreme Monstrosity, hence why even herbivores go out of their way to maim and devour anything with a pulse.

The other issue is if it has enough characterization; I'd say, "barely". It never talks but is described as laughing in Elias' head, with its actions playing it as a manipulator as well as a sadist. For most of the comics, it makes itself seem like Elias is subconsciously letting out his troubled side...only to reveal that yes, Dinosaur Satan is real.

There's also no redeeming qualities for it. While the Saurian calls the dinosaurs the Monstrosity's "children" - it does so with quotes. There's nothing that indicates the Supreme Monstrosity cares for them, but only wants dinosaurs to rule the earth once again, and that the dinosaurs are mere extensions of its will.

[tup]SM and the Cultists

Here's my third to last Hooker candidate, where I start getting into niche villain territory.

Who is He?

Eddie Pearl, from Season 2’s "Sweet Sixteen and Dead", controls all the crime on the Sunset Blvd, from drugs, to under-aged prostitution.

What has he done?

Running Pearl Enterprises, which apparently take up a large portion of the street, Eddie gets away with his crimes by regularly bribing a councilman aide with money and young girls ("freebee dates" as he likes to call them). When the young prostitute Kelly witnesses his latest transaction, Eddie has her mortally wounded, uncaring that she died in the hospital bed.

Prideful of the amount of young women he gets hooked into prostitution and drugs, Eddie tries to have Kelly’s brother Gordy killed via overdose after he attempts to kill him out of revenge for his sister's death. But that means nothing, as Eddie's later busted by Hooker, and the episode's over.

Redeeming Qualities?

None.

Heinousness?

Eddie's easily the worst pimp in the show, regularly luring teen girls into prostituting themselves while he reaps the profits, unafraid to drug and sell them on the street, or use them as part of his frequent bribes. Plus Eddie will have anybody in his way murdered, no matter how old they are, with his attempts to kill Gordy by pumping him full of drugs showing how low he'll sink.

Conclusion

I'm leaning keep.

Are he and Dobbs the only traffickers/pimps?

Yes to Goulet, the Overlook and Eddie. I guess yes to the evil dinosaur as well, though that's skimming the line for requisite characterization.

Jackie, when you're done the posts, you mind doing a recap with links to the EPs? You mention sex crimes and rapists are supposedly rare on this show but this is like the sixth candidate where rape or forced prostitution features. The pimp and trafficker should be fine, but the Serial Rapist villains themselves are blending into me and that's a problem.

Regarding April Fool's Posts: please don't. Pretty much every time that day turns into trouble when people start "joking around."

Agreed with Scraggle vote-wise and for Hooker. That's a number of serial rapists and I think some are absolutely outstripping others.

Agreed with [up][up] and [up][up][up]. The pimp and trafficker are unique enough, but when you have like 4-5 serial rapists...

EDIT: Also, there are still more Diagnosis: Murder proposals to come, right?

@Scraggle: Will do. I admit I got a bit carried away with the amount of rapists I wanted to propose, and I think I know who we're gonna cut from the lineup.

Also in the meantime:

  • Sailor Justice: Lord Zamon is an intergalactic conqueror who plans to acquire the Ideation Drive and use its power to rule the universe. Upon discovering the I-Drive’s location on Earth, Zamon sends three of his Hyperbeasts out to destroy a high school to claim it, viewing humans as insignificant insects. When his beasts lose to Sailor Justice, Zamon attempts to destroy the entire Earth as an act of revenge, hoping to acquire the I-Drive among the celestial debris.

  • Sleeping Dogs: Liu Shen Tong, aka "Mr. Tong", is a dreaded interrogator and enforcer for the Sun On Yee. Feared for his cruel methods of murdering spies and traitors, Tong kills undercover cop Charles Ho by brutally torturing him and burying him alive to finish him off. Helping "Big Smile" Lee kill those in his gang who don’t support his rise to power, Tong kidnaps Wei’s friend Jackie Ma in an attempt to bury him alive, but after he’s rescued by Wei, Tong kidnaps Jackie again to disembowel him and hang his corpse up for Wei to see. With Wei in his grasp, Tong expresses cold joy at getting to torture him to death, hoping to break his record of 48 hours.

@ACW: Yes. Mir still had a few (I think like 2 or 3, maybe 4 if we go for that last book villain) but I'm waiting for his phone/computer situation to get better so he can EP again. Likewise, I got one I'll do when Mir does his, and Ravok has one we're waiting on too.
