Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Lighty jw was that a [tup] for Natla?

Also I've got a spare slot to be able to EP someone so I thought I'd ask whether it's worth the time.

We've got Malefor up but that's based on the console version. IIRC the DS version of The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon made some changes in the story. Such as the golem attack being removed from the city siege, the Destroyer (which Malefor uses to destroy the planet) being killed off permantely way before it achieve it's goal (whereas in the console game, it succeeds in igniting the planet), and Malefor becoming a dark entity within the final boss. I believe his Omnicidal Maniac tendencies are still there but the story has been altered. Is this enough to have a look into? And if it is, do I take into consideration the previous DS games happening since they were all completely different from each other?

Oh, Mr. Kennedy, you entertain me. To show my appreciation, I will help you awaken from your world of clichés.

Yep, it was, Wet! I'm gonna say no on that being worth much, TBQH. Same game with slight alterations for a port isn't really worth a new entry IMO

[up][up][up] I would still consider the previous DS games, but otherwise go for it. [nja] Or not, I guess. I don't remember how much the story changes myself, so I probably can't comment there.

What's the work?

Ninjago again. To recap, the series stars a team of ninja with access to elemental powers. There's always some new gimmick that pops up in each season, with Season 11 centering around a powerful staff that enhances the user's elemental powers.

Long story short, the ninja of ice, Zane, gets his hands on this staff but is banished to another dimension with it. Due to weird, timey-wimey dimension jumping stuff, Zane ends up 60 years in the past of the "Never-Realm." Fortunately, he's a robot—go with it—so he's perfectly fine waiting for his friends to come get him. Unfortunately, things... don't exactly go that well.

Who is General Vex?

A native inhabitant of the Never-Realm, Vex is a formling, a being with the ability to shift into an animal form. However, he never managed to achieve this power—apparently one must be pure of heart, which, as we will see, he is most definitely not. Vex began to fall prey to paranoia, thinking his fellow formlings were mocking him behind his back, and jealously abandoned the village. Seeking "revenge", he went to the king of the Never-Realm, Grimfax, and attempted to goad him into war with his old tribe. This fails because Grimfax isn't an idiot, and Vex goes to wander the tundras. There he came across Zane and began spying on him, eventually catching him by surprise and wiping his memory.

Vex convinced the amnesiac Zane that he was the "Ice Emperor," with Vex as his loyal advisor. With the power of the staff, the two attacked Grimfax, corrupting his soldiers into ice zombies and forcing him into their service lest they kill him. Vex would proceed to point his Emperor to his old formling village, painting them as warmongers so that the Emperor would freeze them all.

Under his influence, the Never-Realm would fall under an eternal winter. It was already pretty cold, but at least things used to grow. With the Ice Emperor in charge, everything begins to die, and resources are stretched thin. Vex manipulates the Emperor into regularly sending out their ice warriors to slaughter or freeze "rebels," and ordered a genocide against the yeti of the mountains—only one has survived by the time the other ninja arrive (though I'm admittedly not sure if he's the last one of his entire species or just his specific tribe).

Vex also managed to get his hands on a magic mirror thing that allows him to see everything going on in the realm. When the other ninja arrive and are taken in by the last village remaining within the kingdom (the others having fled south long ago), Vex forces Grimfax to lead an army to kill them all, attempting to extinguish their "Hearth Fire"—the Emperor's influence over the climate has made it literally impossible to make a new fire, and this is the only one they've managed to keep going for decades. Without it, the entire village—men, women, and children—will die. When that fails, he has the Emperor conjure a giant spirit dragon to incase the village in ice.

Fighting ensues, yada yada yada. The surviving formlings and Grimfax help the ninja knock Zane's memories back into him, freeing Grimfax's soldiers, the formlings, and all the other innocent people they've frozen in ice over the decades. The staff is broken and its corruptive power is destroyed, and Vex is exiled—for real, this time.

Redeeming qualities?

Nah. Despite how much he whines about it, any tragic backstory is a figment of his paranoid egomania. He left his tribe completely of his own accord, yet constantly blames them for his "exile" and has his master attack for revenge. It's absurdly petty and disproportionate.

Is he heinous enough?

To recap the current keepers:

  • The Omega is the king of a race of omnicidal shadow demons.
  • Kalmaar is a powerful prince with an undersea kingdom and a storm god at his command to enact genocide.
  • The Iron Baron leads his raiders in an entire industry of regular murder and slavery.

Vex is already nasty; a lot of his victims are subject to Harmless Freezing, but he's also responsible for an eternal winter, genocide of the yetis, attempting to freeze a village (with a lot of children in it) to death. The real kicker? Resources. The Baron at least controls a tribe to enforce his will and hunt dragons. Vex is just... some asshole, who got lucky and ran into a powerful being in a particularly weak state, and used him to go on a six decade rampage of mass murder.

Verdict?

Another easy one. I'll try to finish my rewatch soon so I can see how the other two pan out.

Sure to Vex.

Malefor is the exact same character, with mostly the same exact plot, in just a different port. Guys, I'm not gonna lie...a big issue we were called out on was shoehorning too many examples in, and now it seems to be anything that differs even slightly in adaptation is being judged as fair game. Earnestly, I don't think it's necessary. It's just gonna cause bloat.

Yeah having a skim through, the location's and narrative plays out the same (minus the changes I had mentioned), be literally no point with me E Ping him. TBH he's a borderline GDV in it. And it also excludes him condemning the apes to a Fate Worse than Death.

Yes to Vex and Jacqueline

Yeah, different medium is one thing but I don't personally think just different ports is worth it, unless like in, say, the recent DS!Ozai, he's given unique crimes to the work that bump him over whereas in other ports, he wouldn't hit.

Speaking of that, for the inevitable Avatar page...I earnestly don't think there's going to be an Ozai picture that's workable, the only scenes where he takes personal action are 1. Scarring Zuko (it's a Gory Discretion Shot so no actual onscreen evil), 2. Trying to shoot Zuko in the back with lightning (Zuko redirects it without issue so no actual harm), and 3. Him burning the Earth Kingdom (which is the kind of "face followed by big mess of destruction" that we're trying to avoid on page images going forward).

Thusly, I think the best bet is gonna be this one of Tokuga from the Korra comic. Lighty will be proposing him soon I believe, so that'll bring the needed entry to let the picture work out.

"I will use its power to end the Earth Kingdom... permanently. From our airships, we will rain fire over their lands, a fire that will destroy everything and out of the ashes, a new world will be born: a world in which all the lands are Fire Nation and I am the supreme ruler of everything!"

Alright, so my last three proposals didn't go as planned, but that's okay! I found a work that already has a CM, but i feel like it still has a few possible candidates. More specifically three. Buckle up as always, cause it's a big one.

What's the work?

Odin Sphere is an Action RPG, produced by Vanillaware. We follow Alice reading about a book telling the tale of the fictional world of Aerion. In it, many nations are at war with eachother over ruling eachother, seeking the power of the legendary cauldron. We take control of five main characters where they each follow their point of view of how the world is dealing with the war, and the prophecies that are told around them, including one that foretolds the possible end of the world...

Who are they? What have they done?

The Three Wise Men, consisting of Urzur, Skuldi and Beldor, are major antagonists of the game.

Originally serving under King Gallon's name and the kingdom of Titania, they were considered the most powerful sorcerers in the land, even being above Odin originally, with him working as their subordinate, up until he proved the wiser and stole the Wise Men's secrets, becoming a powerful soldier and eventually king. They would seek revenge against him because of this.

After Titania waged war against the kingdom of Valentine, and subsequently the tragedy of King Gallon transforming into the Beast of Darkova, the new king Edmund (son of Gallon) would tell the Wise Men to research on this beast, managing to find a way on how to control it. Later they would eventually find the prophecy of Armageddon, where they drew the conclusion that it would give them control of all Aerion.

They would eventually plan to bring about Armaggeddon because of this, and each would manipulate many characters in the story to bring it up. They would start on capturing a dragon from Winterhorn Ridge by Beldor, and would use him as a slave to kill the people they wanted.

Urzur would remain at King Edmund's side, Beldor would travel to the fairy kingdom alongside Belial to join their army, and Skuldi would go with Velvent and Ingway, the last survivors of the Valentine kingdom, serving them.

    Events in the main game

  • Urzur would manipulate the kingdom's troops slowly collapsing the kingdom, and would seem like an ally of Cornellius, King Edmund's son. He would strike a deal with Ingway into transforming Cornellius into a Pooka and sent him into the Netherworld, where he would manage to escape. Ingway would then ask for information about the beast of Darkova to King Edmund, and Urzur would betray him by turning him into a frog. Later he would side with Cornellius after his father throwed him out of the castle for being a Pooka, informing him of Hindel, a dragon who would probably know to help with his curse.

  • Beldor would meanwhile be serving Queen Elfaria and her daughter Mercedes in the war by using Belial in the army, where they overwhelmed the forces of Aesir, Odin's forces, although it would be defeated by Gwendolyn, Odin's daughter. After Queen Elfaria's death, Beldor would cut his ties with the fairy kingdom and retreat. Beldor would be encountered by both Oswald, the shadow knight, and Mercedes where both times he sent Belial to attack them, and both times the dragon would be defeated. In Mercedes' time where he was defeated, he tried to attack her when Belial was defeated, but the frog Ingway would poison him and force his retreat.

  • Skuldi would be found helping Ingway and Velvet into researching more of the prophecy, while secretly maintining connections with Lord Brigan, one of King Odin's generals. Having a fight with Krois, an old Pooka that was helping Ingway and Velvet too, he would reveal to Velvet about King Gallon having a poem in the Netherworld. Although Krois would madly leave them both, Skuldi guided Velvet into the Netherworld, where they would alert Queen Odette of the Netherworld, leaving Velvet by herself to fight her. He would then be found with Lord Brigan and would give him the idea about overthrowing Odin, and would later indirectly inform of Velvet about Gwendolyn having been cursed by Odin. Shortly afterwards, he would capture Gwendolyn and give her to the fire king Onyx to shake up King Odin.

The three of them would later reunite in Titania, where they would sacrifice innocents to Belial in order to force the arm of King Edmund to give them the book of transformation, while also letting him keep quiet while Velvet was seeking for Cornellius, leading her into a trap with Belial and Beldor tried to capture her. Although she would defeat them, the others would take advantage of her being tired and chained her up. They would infrom her of their plans of bringing forth Armaggedon for power, and that she would not be alive to see it, casting a sleeping spell on her.

  • Beldor would eventually encounter Mercedes again in the sewers of Titania, in order to ask him for help to get to the netherworld, offering him forgivness for his crimes. He would try and send Belial at her again, but he would refuse, and he would subsequently hurt him in order to obey, which caused Mercedes to change her mind and give him an Ultimatum, help her, or die. Both of them fight, and it ends on him cheap shotting her, only for frog Ingway to save her by casting the Pooka curse on him. Ingway would subsequently be cured of his frog curse. Beldor would meet his supposed end when, after guiding Mercedes to the Netherworld, he tries to flee when they were distracted, but would subsequently by Haljas.

  • Meanwhile, the king of Titania would finally give the transformation book to Urzur, who would reprimand him for causing that many deaths in order to obey. Cornellius heard the conversation and would act surprised for not dying against Wagner, knowing that Hindel was already dead and was trying to trick him into fighting a losing battle against Wagner. He retreats to the sewers and gets angry at Ingway for having the fake ring of Titrel, a ring that would've been used to wake up the cauldron. Ingway would help Cornellius against a final battle against Belial while he dealt with Urzur, resulting in both of them winning. Urzur would try and command the beast once more, but in his last breath, Belial would manage to kill Urzur.

  • Afterwards, Skuldi would encounter Oswald on the sewers, where he would ask about Gwendolyn's whereabouts, where they would subsequently fight. Skuldi would be defeated, and would inform him that he gave her to King Onyx for him and Odin to start a war, and start Armaggedon. Trying to attack him on his back, Oswald would see it coming and finally slash him off dead for using Gwendolyn as a tool.

Although all of them seemed to be dead, it's revealed that Beldor survivied due to his curse of a Pooka, where his undead body was still walking around, deciding to unleash King Gallon from the underworld after the death of Queen Odette and finally start the Armaggedon, while also taking control of the new beast of Darkova, Ingway.

Either character that the player chooses to fight against the beast of Darkova will cause Beldor to send the beast against him, even if it is someone who Ingway knows like Mercedes or Velvet. His demise in the true path is unkown, but it's implied he has been sent to the netherworld.

Are they bad enough?

Okay, having said all of that, i would say that the three of them cross the bar. They are the second highest influence that the game has towards initiating Armaggedon, an event that would cleanse the world clean, and in the beliefs of the Three Wise Men, leave them in power.

Each of them are responsible for sacrificing innocents to Belial, crumbling kingdoms close to their deaths, and nearly activating the Cauldron, a very powerful weapon that would start Armaggedon.

Redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

No real freudian excuse. Nothing drives them to destroy the world aside from searching for power.

As for the character page, it mentions that Even Evil Has Standards when he seems disgusted at King Edmund's refusal of giving them the Transformation book even when he's sending Belial to attack his citizens. I really don't find it valid as they themselves are planning to kill even more people with Armaggedon, and you know, he was the one who sent the dragon to begin with, so the King being stubborn and causing deaths doesn't align with them truly having any standards.

As for Undying Loyalty, i believe that they only speak of King Gallon so highly because they know he's one of the beasts of Armaggedon, destined to destroy the world. They mostly speak of liberating Gallon rather than doing all of their actions in the name of Gallon. Besides, the prophecy foretold that he would destroy the world, and the kings of the world would rise up above them, so they would essentially let him destroy it, and as it restarts, they would be the ones to rule it.

So yeah, not exactly loyal, so much so as a means to an end, even if they were serving him in the past. No one speaks of caring for each other, much as just passing mentions of eachother dying. And they are very much Jerkasses to everyone if they can.

Veredict?

At least for me, yeah.

Didn't Odin steal their secrets though? Revenge seems reasonable, if Armageddon doesn't.
