Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

So... this is one I have been bouncing back and fourth on for a long time, and one I am still not entirely confident actually counts. However I've wanted to get this one off my bucket list for awhile now, and I figured, no harm in trying right? So, let's get goin' shall we?

What is the Work?

"Crawling" is a Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location song created by CG5. It revolves around that game's main antagonist Ennard as he lures the unsuspecting Michael Afton into the Scooping Room so that he can "crawl into his skin" and "release the evil within". With him seemingly using the Funtime Animatronics to help him in this process. Ultimately, the song ends with Ennard doing exactly what he set out to do and scooping out Michael's innards, with the last shot showing him piloting the other's skin.

Who is He? What Has He Done?

Ennard serving as his own entity as opposed to being an amalgamation of all the Funtime Animatronics, serves as the main antagonist of this song. Seeking to escape the underground facility he has been trapped in so that he can reach the outside world and "release the evil within" he lures Michael Afton into the Scooping Room, encouraging him to "lend him his hand" and allow him to "crawl into his skin". Throughout the song, Ennard seems to serve a leader role to the Funtime Animatronics, monitoring them and having them help in catching Michael. Eventually, at the end of the song, Ennard manages to successfully draw Michael into the scooping room, at which point he tells him to "try not to cry" before announcing that it was time to go down in history, before using the scooper on him. The song ends in the same way canon Sister Location does, with Ennard now piloting Michael's body as the last lyrics of the song play.

"Because the evil, it comes from within"

Mitigating Factors?

Like I said previously, Ennard is depicted as his own entity in this song as opposed to a hivemind of all the Funtime Animatronics, and while there is imagery that implies they are one in the same, the song itself just straight up shows Ennard acting independently from everybody else and even has his own personality.

As for actual redeeming traits? Well moral agency certainly isn't an issue considering he is well aware of his own evil and makes no attempt to hide it with how he speaks of "releasing the evil within" once he crawls into Michael's skin and reaches the surface.

I wouldn't say he has much of a Freudian Excuse either considering he is never shown to have experienced the same torture the other Funtimes have, and his only motive for wanting to reach the surface is to just... be evil. The closest thing I can really call a tragedy here is that Ennard speaks of Michael "wanting to take them down with a big ol' scoop of pain and strife" but the lyrics before this literally speak of him beign a snake of lies poisoning his life, and again, the only motive he is said to have for wanting to do this, is just so he can be more evil on the surface.

As for any possible care for the Funtime Animatronics? Nah, not really. At the beginning of the song he says he won't have the chance to tell Michael that the others (the Funtimes) haven't made the cut, which to me, comes off as him just outright calling them broken and defective. Not to mention, with how Ennard is portrayed as his own being here, we don't even know if he took the other Funtime Animatronics with him to the surface, we don't even see their scooped carcasses in the Scooping Room, so it's pretty likely that he just... left them down there. Aside from that the song only portrays them as helpers who Ennard is using to accomplish his goals. The closest thing he ever shows to care is when he refers to himself and the Funtimes when speaking of how Michael just wants to "take them down with a big ol' scoop of pain and strife" which even then, he is just speaking factually, the tone of his voice and his overall expression remains completely calm, he never shows any annoyance at him for doing this, he is just stating what he believes Michael wants.

The only other thing to mention here is plot, but he's fine in that regard. The music video itself is fully animated, we get to see his actions on screen, and the video itself follows a similar plot to the original game, plus it revolves around more perspectives than just Ennard's. So yeah, not just a song about him gloating about how evil he is.

Heinous Standard?

And... this is where the problem arises. You see, when it comes to the music video itself, Ennard's worst crime is scooping Michael and using him as a skin suit, which don't get me wrong, is pretty bad, but from what I've seen that's not like, too out of the ordinary for horror villains (though I may be wrong in that regard) and while he does mention that the Scooper is painful

"You only want to take us down with a big ol' scoop of pain"

Painful deaths aren't all that uncommon in horror media. So the question is, how do I think he passes? Well this is where I must do something that I am not sure everyone here will agree with, but I am going to borrow from canon.

You see, in canon, the Scooper isn't just some random ass device designed to scoop out endoskeletons, it is a remnant extractor, and when it's used on Michael, he doesn't actually die, he is still alive when the Funtimes puppet him around as a meat suit, which ya know, is pretty horrible imagery and more or less an And I Must Scream fate, one of the cruelest in the franchise even, keep in mind that this isn't speculation as Sister Location outright tells us that he was never dead and he even comes back after Ennard ejects themselves from him. And while this song does use fanon, it still keeps a lot of things faithful to canon, including Michael's scooping, which would mean that like canon, Michael is still alive when Ennard is using him as a skin suit. So with that, I think he might be able to pass? Admittedly I am still really unsure and even I feel like I might be bending the rules here. I guess you could say this coudl create problems with how much weight his crimes are given, but the whole song is about him scooping Michael and using him as a skin suit so that he can be evil, so it's relatively central to the plot.

Though if it is any help, Ennard speaks of wanting to do evil things ocne he scoops Michael. And while this would be vague on its own, at one point in the song we see him replacing his clown mask... with a Springtrap mask, which ya know, Springtrap is William Afton, and William Afton is a child murderer... so with the context of him wanting to do evil things, plus that imagery pretty heavily implies that he plans to follow in his creator's footsteps.

In terms of the song's standard itself? Ennard is fine in that regard, he is the only one in the song who does anything possibly baseline passing, as the other Funtime Animatronics are seemingly just following his lead. Plus the worst thing they are implied to want to accomplish is killing Michael, which is pretty standard villainy.

Verdict?

Yeah... I'm really not sure on this one. I just wanted to get it out of the way so I can clear my conscience of it. Ultimately, I am fine with whatever consensus this receives.

  • Suko’s inner dialogue reveals the Skar King’s tribe revolves around survival of the fittest, where those deemed weak die—“It was the way of the caves. Those who were too frail or injured to fight for food and not clever enough to steal it starved. It was what they deserved, for being weak or stupid or both.”

What is the work?

"What If The Clone Troopers RESISTED AGAINST Order 66" by The Star Wars Galaxy is a Star Wars What If? asking what would have happened had the bond the clones forged with the Jedi during the Clone Wars allowed them to resist Order 66.

Who is the candidate and what has he done?

Palpatine, upon realizing his plans have gone up in flames and being told by Anakin that he's been captured by the clones and Jedi, tells the latter his escape plan. Knowing the clones and Jedi will storm his office soon, he plans to escape in a Star Destroyer manned by Sith loyalists. Leaving the door, he's besieged by clones and five Jedi. Destroying the lights, Palpatine starts to fight:
  • With his lightsabers, he begins slaughtering clones in droves at "unnatural speed".
  • Master Minas Velti is the first Jedi to fight him. Palpatine first cuts off her weapon hand before slicing her in half.
  • The other four Jedi attack him. Palpatine throws one at the clones and kills two more Jedi.
  • He then uses the distraction caused by the aforementioned throwing to electrocute more clones to death with Sith lightning.
  • Another Jedi is killed, this time by getting their neck snapped.
  • He takes out the final troopers by levitating them with the Force and smashing them against the walls, breaking most of their bones.
  • The final Jedi, Kelleran Beq, makes one final attempt. Palpatine electrocutes him and then Force pulls a fallen lightsaber into Beq's back before cutting him in half.
Successfully escaping before reinforcements arrive, Palpatine doesn't get to celebrate for long, as a repentant Anakin tells the good guys about his master's escape plan. Palpatine's Star Destroyer is annihilated by the Republic's cruisers. and he can only scream in rage as he dies in flames.

Mitigating Factors?

Palpatine.

Heinousness?

Order 66 may not have been successful in this take, but Palps still overshadows everyone by a large margin in how vile he is, especially since Anakin is still an Anti-Villain who redeems himself. It should also be worth noting that the resistance wasn't 100%, as Ki-Adi-Mundi is still killed, though it's given the darkly comedic implication the clones hated him so much they didn't bother resisting.

Verdict?

Yes.

[tdown] to Ennard. Not only is it questionable if he's heinous enough (Michael Afton seems to be his only known victim), the proposal relies heavily on Fridge Horror (the song doesn't state he's a separate entity from the Funtime Animatronics nor that he doesn't care about them). The song's great (I personally enjoy it) but he's more creepy than heinous.

[up] I mean... the fact that he has Shimo start to cause a new Ice Age indicates he's one in the film as well. It's just made more explicit in the novelization.

What is the work?

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the novelization of the film of the same name, including extra scenes and lore cut from the film to save on time.

Three years after the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, Monarch has established outposts in the Hollow Earth—losing some personnel to the predatory wildlife (RIP Nathan Lind), though Dr. Ilene Andrews is now one of the top brass... which she hates. As Kong explores the Hollow Earth looking for others of his kind, Godzilla reigns supreme over the Titans still on the surface and ruthlessly executes any who defy his authority (RIP Scylla). Ilene's adopted daughter Jia, last surviving Iwi of Skull Island, begin receiving mysterious visions warning her of an incoming threat; which Godzilla also senses, sending him on a warpath to power up (RIP Tiamat). Meanwhile, Kong discovers he's not the only member of his kind, though the others aren't as friendly as he'd hoped.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

Untold millennia ago, there was peace between the Hollow Earth and the Surface World, with the Titans being worshipped (or feared) as gods. Some—like Godzilla, Mothra, and the Great Apes—were seen as protectors... while others were feared as destroyers.

The Skar King was a Great Ape Titan who, contrary to the benevolent nature of his kind, sought to conquer both the Hollow Earth and Surface World. Corrupting his tribe and ruling from a mountain fortress, the Skar King's ambitions were thwarted when he came into conflict with Godzilla and the Titans under his command. Defeated, the Skar King and his tribe were imprisoned in a deeper layer of Hollow Earth—inspiring myths and legends about evil gods such as Kronos and the Titanomachy of Greek mythology, Aŋra Mainiiu of Zoroastrian mythology, Satan and the War on Heaven in the Abrahamic religions, and Babi of Egyptian mythology.

Settling in a volcanic wasteland, the Skar King ruled through fear and pain; his subjects living by the mantra of "survival of the fittest"—being forced to fight for scraps of food and water, with those deemed weak perishing. Those who defied or failed him were tortured and executed, their severed heads mounted on spikes to frighten the others into compliance. Oh, and all the females were rounded up into his personal harem and kept imprisoned in a cave for him to have his way with. At some point the Skar King managed to capture the ancient reptilian Titan Shimo, who had once dominated Godzilla and vanquished Ghidorah with her world-ending cryokinetic powers, and tortured her into submission. As his tribe's rage and resentment grew over the generations, the Skar King lied to his subjects that when they conquered the Surface World they would all rule it as kings, though he secretly plotted to use Shimo to destroy the Surface World out of pure spite and malice instead.

When Kong accidentally opened up a sinkhole to the deeper later of Hollow Earth, the Skar King summoned his Red Stripes—his "loyal" band of enforcers—and young son Suko, leading them to investigate. Coming across Monarch's outpost, the Skar King and his Red Stripes destroyed it, killing the humans stationed there for no reason other than because they could. Elated at the presence of humans in the Hollow Earth—meaning the way to the Surface World was open—the Skar King discovered Kong's home, stole his food, and left the Red Stripes to ambush him—intending to interrogate and kill him.

When the Red Stripes were defeated, Suko led an uncaptured Kong into his domain, and Kong punched out one of his enforcers, the Skar King kicked Gnarled Finger—the only ape before Kong to treat Suko with something resembling kindness—into a pool of lava for daring to shield Suko from his wrath, and tried to kill Kong when he intervened. Outmatched and realizing Kong would kill him in a fair fight, the Skar King unleashed Shimo and tortured her into attacking Kong with her Frostbite Blast. Kong escaped with Suko's help and the Skar King sent his Red Stripes after them with the intent of killing Kong and then Suko for having betrayed him. When his lieutenant One-Eye returned alone, the Skar King was enraged at his failure—only sparing him due to One-Eye having found the location of the hidden Iwi city Malenka, where several portals to the surface were located. Attacking the city with his army and Shimo, Skar King was confronted by Kong, the original Mothra, and a powered-up Godzilla. His army defeated, the Skar King breached the surface in Rio de Janeiro and ordered Shimo to cause a new ice age—gleefully terrorizing the humans present. Kong and Godzilla intervened, and Suko used Kong's axe to smash the crystal the Skar King used to torture Shimo into obedience. The Skar King attempted to murder his own son in a fit of rage, but was tag-teamed by Kong and Godzilla, frozen solid by Shimo's Frostbite Blast, and smashed into a lifetime supply of monkey soup.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

Nope. He's a ruthless tyrant whose insatiable ambition for conquest has twisted into a being of pure malice.

Are they bad enough?

Yep. All the nastiness of his film counterpart, with added flavour that he is an Omnicidal Maniac courtesy of more exposition from the Iwi legends and internal dialogue from Suko and One-Eye.

Final verdict?

Aye to Palps and the Scar King, nay to Ennard.

What's the work?

Dark Knights of Steel is an elseworlds revolving around a medieval version of the DCU. Here, Superman and his parents escaped to earth after Krypton's destruction, ending up as friends of the benevolent King Thomas and Queen Martha Wayne, later becoming the successors to their crowns after their tragic murders.

We've got three, so to start things off:

Who is Elizabeth Arkham?

The head of the Arkham Orphanage, Elizabeth uses her wards—child versions of classic Batman rogues and also Jimmy Olsen for some reason—for cruel experiments. Harvey Dent is one notable example: he's first seen congratulating Jimmy on getting adopted out of the "hellhole", with scarring noticeable on half his face. The next we see him, some years later? The scarred half of his face has gotten even worse, appearing as a ghoulish, skeletal thing, while Harvey himself has nearly lost it, constantly stuck between decisions.

"Upstairs or downstairs? Right or left? Sleeping or waking? Breathing or dying?"

Another kid, the 12 year old Kirk Langstrom, was permanently transformed into the monstrous Man-Bat, a ginormous, half-bat creature incapable of speaking. Man-Bat breaks free and begins "abducting" kids from the orphanage to save them from Elizabeth. Bruce, Kal-El, and Supergirl hear of the monster and venture out to stop it, but upon learning the truth, they head back to the orphanage and catch Elizabeth in the middle of more experiments. She's arrested... but is then approached by Amanda Waller, who offers to have her released in exchange for continuing her work in her service.

Mitigating factors?

The main conflict of the series is a three-way war engineered by alien invaders, but child experiments are a unique enough niche to stand out from that. Otherwise, nada.
