Tropes Needing TRS cleanup and discussion thread

Coincidentally, I cleaned two examples on Characters.Barney And Friends that misuded Eye Glasses just for that. The series is live-action, so of course it's misuse!

Seinfeld Is Unfunny seems to have been removed unanimously. Was there any discussion?

It was removed by the person who added it, so...

Also I think the person who added it just queued it up, which was why it was removed.

Would anyone object if, going by the new standards for Advertising Tropes, I removed all entries in the Not Thriving section that are now considered healthy?

Apologies for double-posting, but I'm split down the middle on whether to holler to move this to Long-Term. On the one hand, we'll definitely be talking about this page for a while, but on the other hand, I'm not sure 600 posts is long enough for a Short-Term project thread to be moved over.

This should stay here. The actual cleanup effort has ended, right now people only use it sporadically, so I don't see a reason to have it move.

I actually don't think this should be in Short-Term because it's not a limited effort project.

Any feedback on my Advertising Tropes proposal?

People use the general TRS discussion thread for pretty much the same purpose but I don't care too much about this thread being open or moved.

Sounds fine to me.

The reason this was made was just because TNTRS was being flooded with things that were misplaced, didn't need TRS, and had zero discussion, among other things; I also needed to add all of the asterisks to make sure people remembered the wick check step. That part has been resolved, so this is only used now on the rare occasion someone wants to ask about a trope.

I've noticed that Karmic Overkill is mostly just complaining, not to mention the underlying fundamentals are probably redundant to other YMMV pages, like Unintentionally Sympathetic and Designated Villain. Thoughts?

The trope is designed for complaining. The question is to let it be as we can't just get rid of every "negative" trope ever just because they're negative but the examples' writing needs to be less emotional and more objective, or get rid of it because of its complaining nature.

I don't think it's always redundant with Unintentionally Sympathetic. What if the character was unsympathetic and people wanted them to be punished, but when it happened, the punishment was just way too much compared to their evil deeds in people's opinion?

That's actually what most Karmic Overkill usage looks like in my experience. (TBH the kind that's saying the character getting punished at all is overkill does seem like it overlaps with US, and I'd be inclined to cut those specific examples).

Karmic Overkill was actually launched, I think, in order to prevent such misuse from flooding Unintentionally Sympathetic. People wanted a way to talk about these types of cases, where fans thought a villain was given too harsh a punishment despite not actually sympathizing with them. The MLP Season 8 finale reaction, basically.

Most of what I see of Karmic Overkill isn't whiny, just describing why the fans think a certain writing decision went too far. Negative =/= "complainy" IMO.

I see Tap on the Head get used whenever anyone gets hit on the head, without elaborating how it did (or in this trope's case didn't permanently affect the victim.

I added Significant Double Casting to the list, as it may fit better as a trivia item (as it's a casting-related trope). Discovered this possible issue while doing TRS cleanup for an existing thread.

I think the "Significant" part makes it a story trope, similar to why Actor Allusion isn't trivia.

Skimming through and saw Bad Boss on the list. Now, I did Bad Boss Wick Check a while ago and found a majority of valid examples. Is that enough to remove this from the list, or is the misuse substantial enough?

I think that trope is doing fine if most examples are correct, and the fact that it has a five-digit wick count means renaming it would be a pain, so I don't think it's worth taking it to TRS. I'd say remove it.

Edit: Instead of renaming it, maybe redirects could be made instead, because it doesn't currently have any. Maybe Evil Boss would work as a redirect, or Malevolent Boss to parallel Benevolent Boss. As for moving examples that belong under Mean Boss instead, Short-Term Projects would probably work for that.

Removed Bad Boss.

I may go through later and see if there's anything else that strikes me as questionable or disproven. Haven't done a deep dive since the first round of cleanup ended.

Still haven't done the purge as I've been busy. When I get a chance I'll see what I can do.
