Not familiar with the work, but from the write-up it doesn't seem that the character is meant to be viewed as heroic in that particular instance, especially since he did get called out for it (even if not everything he did was addressed).

Should we make another thread for Designated Villain as I just had to delete an entry for a guy whose a child molester who abuses his sister.
Some of these guys are either blatantly bad or supposed to be sympathetic antivillanous.

- In Hannibal, Mason Verger's evil plan is to...kill Hannibal Lecter. In vengeance for Hannibal cutting off most of his face and permanently paralyzing him. This is also the book where Hannibal becomes a full-on Anti-Hero because he only kills Asshole Victims. Verger's villainy is, for the most part, reserved to Offscreen Villainy child molestation and his mistreatment and abuse of his sister Margot, so there's no doubt he's a terrible person, but his plan to kill Hannibal is that of an Anti-Villain at the very worst.

- Designated Hero: Otto isn't meant to be a straight-edge hero, yes, but a number of his actions aren't heroic by any measure, such as killing a defenseless criminal on live television or (briefly) wiping the last remnant of Peter from his mind.
- Designated Villain: Peter (at least in Otto's eyes) is initially portrayed as being in the wrong for wanting control of his body back. It doesn't help that his only vice (not wanting to help save the life of a little girl out of fear that it'd reveal his presence) never would have happened if Doctor Octopus hadn't tried to cause the apocalypse in the first place.
Would these count under the new criteria?

Was Doc Oct actually turning over a new leaf or just taking Peter's place? I never read the series, but I was under the impression that he hadn't changed (morally) and was just trying to prove that he was better than Spider-Man. If I'm right, then the narrative wasn't trying to portray him as a hero, but he was trying to invoke (or something) Villain with Good Publicity.

It all looks good, though the last paragraph about tropers misinterpreting things throws me off since I'm not sure how well it really meshes with the rest of it. It's hard to reconcile our new rules with "but maybe the audience is just confused".
