Hate Sink cleanup

Go To

The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

In case you weren’t aware, the one thing that kept Melanie from being a CM is that her desire to “avenge Nick” (as crazy as it is) was born from some legitimate form of care.

At some point, I will watch it again and see if the knowledge she’s the villain has enough of an effect for HS.

Got those Mighty Ducks entries coming soon.

... What is going on here?

  • No, Pryde isn't a Hate Sink yet at least, he's cool and has an Awesomeness by Analysis moment figuring out Hux was the traitor and his functionality (bad as the writing is) highlights his tactical abilities in comparison to the laughable incompetence of Kylo and Hux.

  • Robert King? Writing him off because of his short screen time ignores the fact that Electra recounts his racism and abuse towards her and her mother as existing to make her a more sympathetic villain. I gotta say he counts.

  • Isla from what I understand is a crossover, her villainy is very personal and rooted in racism and pettiness and like King, makes another villain look more sympathetic. I think she should be added.

  • Lighty already did a writeup for Johnny 23 that's serviceable, so I don't understand why a new one is popping up.

That's all that jumped out at me glancing over the past few pages.

Electra recounts his racism and abuse towards her and her mother
When is any of that ever mentioned? Again, she claims (while embittered about his not paying her ransom, which was at M's advice, and that after he'd supposedly tried to use his own resources to resolve it) that he "stole" the oil from her mother's family, that's it (I looked through the script, and maybe I should just watch it again, but it lines up with what I remember). Which I suppose (along with the rest) is a valid interpretation considering the history of that area in general, but I don't recall that anything in the movie backs it up beyond his marrying well.

(As for all this coming out after he's dead and isn't really around to draw the audience's loathing, I suppose that's not a big point, since we've got for instance King Orvax, who never appears at all but is pretty much entirely responsible for the conflict. And I wholeheartedly agree on him- we at least see from the beginning that he's forcing Atlanna into marriage for power, as well as the effect on Orm's personality.)

There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty.

As Yami said, we hear from M that King did everything he could to try to rescue Elektra and that he was on the verge of deciding to pay Renard the ransom when M insisted he don’t do that.

Also, King's death drives Bond for most of the movie because he was manipulated into inadvertently causing it.

I might be misremembering his racism being made explicit but the film did lean on Elektra's feelings towards him being used to make her more sympathetic, I'm not sold on his removal.

@43 Well we’re definitely supposed to be empathetic toward Elektra and not so much toward King. Her feelings on her father were tenuous at best, she was a victim of a horrible crime and then she was under the impression her father had abandoned her. It was one thing after another after another.

It’s definitely easier to blame her father for the way she turned out rather than just blame Renard or the situation when Renard himself ended up sympathetic to the fact that her father didn’t come for her. Though I emphasize that I believe if King would’ve, he could’ve. If anything, M coaxing him into it would be the one to hate and yet she herself fully admits she was wrong.

She admits she should’ve prioritized Elektra’s safety over taking out Renard. Can definitely say King should've done the same. Aside from not getting the chance to admit that himself though, King was trusting his friend about how she thought would be best to act in the situation and did what she said to do.

So I found this while browsing the Ben 10 character pages on Vilgax's character sheet

  • Hate Sink: Vilgax is one of Ben's toughest, imposing, and all-around powerful foes, but this hardly distracts that he's an utterly abominable sadistic monster with no real redeeming qualities. Among other crimes, he's razed entire innocent planets and has tried to mutilate a 10 year old for his watch, all while thinking he's entitled to all the power in the universe. Even his supposed "noble" qualities ring hollow, and he still has no qualms enslaving millions or wiping out whole dimensions to get what he wants. In a franchise where many major villains have some noble or even pitiable qualities, Vilgax is by far the most consistently evil.

Really. Like I mean he's the franchises uber villain The Dreaded and the heroes Arch-Enemy. Listing a fairly intimidating and charismatic villain as this feels wrong....

New entry. I haven’t put it up yet, but I first need to ask, does this count:

  • Zombieland: Double Tap: Albuquerque is Tallahassee’s less likable Expy who runs over his Beast mobile with his own monster truck and gives him attitude about it, apologizing with very little sincerity and also being a romantic rival to him for Nevada as well. When T-800 zombies show up, Albuquerque disregards the others to handle it himself with his associate Flagstaff (Columbus’s expy). Though he treats Flagstaff well enough, Albuquerque, when it’s discovered he was bitten, is quick to turn against Flagstaff and reveal he was bitten too before they both turn to T-800s and try to kill the others.

I may be rethinking whether or not Melanie counts. I need to see the movie against first to decide. None of the island’s creations can count obviously because they don’t have mind of their own to begin with.

[up][up][up] That's a Complete Monster entry, not a Hate Sink entry. And besides, Vilgax is the kind of villain you want Ben 10 to fight for the spectacle, no different from Ghostfreak and evil Kevin 11. It's easier to claim that debut Kevin 11 is a Hate Sink more than Vilgax, and we all know how that turned in the long run.

Alright. Lex Luthor from the DCAU has a Hate Sink entry on his character folder. He's a listed Magnificent Bastard defined by his charisma, the entry ignores the fact he ultimately pulls a Heroic Sacrifice, he evolves past his cowardly qualities, and he just plain doesn't seem like a keeper. I would be happy to cut that entry, just give me the go-ahead.

Again, I think Albuquerque counts. Does anybody else?

Dumb question: I take it a character can’t count if the thing that makes them this is a deleted scene? That said, it’d still be based on author intent.

How is there only one moment when a character would apply? Hate Sink is a consistent character trait and portrayal. It's what they are; It's their purpose.

I think what I meant was one scene in particular that would stand out among others and it’s deleted. Let me give you the context.

Here’s what the entry would look like including the deleted scene:

  • 30 Minutes or Less: Christopher, the "Pizza Boss", is Nick Davis’s greedy and both emotionally and verbally abusive employer at Vito’s Pizza. When Nick is about to end his shift, Christopher makes him deliver the last minute order (that will inadvertently end up getting Nick the bomb strapped to his chest) by also threatening to take it out of his paycheck if he’s late doing so. In a deleted scene that would’ve happened earlier, Christopher also fires Nick for tricking customers into paying him despite being late (which Nick points out it’s an unrealistic gimmick anyway) and then guilts Nick into staying only to begin degrading and berating him again until Nick eventually does quit and tell him off later on.

So try to rewrite without the context of the deleted scene then?

Also, while I’m at it, here’s the Lane rewrite (I put the “also” in because he’ll go after the entry for Dixon):

  • Station 19: Lane Bishop, also from Season 3, is Maya's overbearing father who took immense pride in her track victories, but became extremely despondent and verbally abusive every time she finished second (particularly in one race when her girlfriend is injured). He does offhand things such as withholding love and attention, indirectly saying she’s “a loser” and ultimately being the catalyst that instills both Maya’s rigid refusal to give up as well as her cold willingness to do what she had to to advance above all others. Lane is proven to be just as emotionally abusive towards his wife and son too and in the season finale, he berates and criticizes Maya while she’s trying to deal with a bomb threat on scene and even gets physical when he pulls her ponytail too, finally waking her up to the truth about how he’s always victimized her.

Anyone good with me doing an entry for Lasombra soon?

So, I'm concerned about the potential duplication problems on the character and main work pages, since Hate Sink is considered a character trope. To potentially solve this problem, I think we should move the Hate Sink entries from the main work pages to the character pages. Thoughts?

I need to start tracking down all my entries I haven’t added yet and putting them up soon. This is where the Drafts would’ve really come in handy.

Also ~G-Editor, was it you who created the entry for Dudley? He’s not on the Film page yet.

Anybody have any suggested rewrites on Stuckey or Melanie?

I’ll create the tree soon for the Hey Arnold film duology, but I don’t think they should be grouped together with the show ones though.

  • Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie: Lasombra is a ruthless river pirate who lures Arnold and his friends to San Lorenzo in order to use Arnold to find the Green Eyes' Corazon that Arnold’s parents stole back from him years ago. Though clever and not easily tricked, Lasombra has no issue threatening the kids or his men while even sacrifices his men‘s lives in order to dodge booby traps and is willing to let the Green Eyes remain uncured of the sleep sickness while he profits of their temple. Lasombra though suave and cool for the most part ultimately boils down to being a greedy Smug Snake with no admirable qualities whatsoever.

~miraculous I asked Austin and he said it was okay. All these villains I brought up were probably meant to be hated though. Stuckey and Kurt DEFINITELY were. Also, again I bring my entries here to make sure they don’t go to the HS pages or work pages when they don’t belong.

~G-Editor Sorry for the misunderstanding.
