Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Since he seems to be approved, here is my writeup for the last Elephant Games keeper:

Detectives United: Origins: The Collector, real name Theodore Alphardi, was once a respected doctor in the Raincliff clinic. After his family was murdered by the Headless Man, Theodore decided to bring them back. Gathering all the knowledge he has about the magical artifacts and discovering the components, that were needed to create a Reality Cube, the artifact which can warp and change space and time itself, Theodore efforetlessly stole the first two parts from the famous detective James Blackthorne and the treasure room of the Queen of the United Kingdom. Luring the heroes into his trap, Theodore succesfully imprisoned Anna Gray in the past, slowing his enemies down, while he himself steals the next component to the Reality Cube. Easily disabling the heroes and attacking the homebase of Mystery Trackers, Theodore was only fully defeated, when Anna Gray traveled to the past and saved his family from death, erasing his deeds as The Collector from history.

I will recheck more of Top Cow, i remember that Cyberforce definetly has few candidates, Devilman though, i think i saw 1 or 2 out of the entire Expanded material that MAYBE can pass.

So my other big example from Otherworld.

Anyway needs a bit of background info. Basically in the otherworld. Sorcerors are only male being a One Gender Species and run what are called cabals. Criminial mafiaseqe organizations who control and move the otherworld.

Who is Benecio Cortez ?

The head of the Cortez Cabal and the father of protagonist Lucas Cortez. Benecio is in many ways a pioneer, before he took over his cabal it lagged as the fourth most powerful having fallen under hard times and was behind in profits. Benecio though through a mix of pragmatic villany was able to rise it back to no. 1. He employs many ways to draw in people for working for him, from very lucrative child and healthcare packages to generous promotions. A man of true taste, he remembers the birthdays of everyone in his office and sends out gifts and knows how to play people and charm them into helping with his illgeal activities. Anyway due to being a cabal sorceror, Benecio ended up with an arranged marriage to somone he doesn't like and has three truly dickish sons with her, the person who he wants to be his actual heir is the son of his mistress lucas. Benecio both adores him and is a very simple choice. His other kids would do the same old, same old. He knows Lucas would become an innovator and truly bring new heights to the cortez cabal when he takes over.

Anyway in his first appearance Industrial Magic, benecio sends Lucas and his girlfriend Paige to investigate the mysterious deaths of various teenagers associated with the cabals. This is being done by the vengeful Edward Hagen, a vampire whose wife was killed by the cabals for being a sadistic serial killer. Anyway the heroes discover that Edward intends to kill Lucas to open a portal to limbo and resurrect his wife. They try to pass it off to Benecio as him being the one in danger instead and that he should get maxmimum security as way to divert Benecio's attention away from Lucas. He sees right through it though and declares that they'll be using the scheduled masquerade ball as a way to both celebrate his son returning to the family business and as a way to protect him as all eyes will be on him. During the ball, benecio uses a doppleganger and switches with him. Going off against Edward and defeats him. Having his soul cast into eternal punishment for daring to try and touch his son where he will never reuinite with his deceased wife as a result.

Anyway he helps Hope Adams and Karl Marsten with an issue they ran into and asks they give him a favor that he can call in later. Personal Demon, the son of an old enemy of Benecio that Benecio disappeared when he has arrived in Miami and is musclining in on his territory. He'd prefer to solve it a pragmatic way so sends Hope undercover to try and recruit him or at least learn his weaknesses to stop him. Anyway it seems it was this dudes Co-Dragons The Haig brothers who are the true masterminds and after suffering from their paranoid mother became obessesed with stopping the cabals. The two are shapeshifters who can take any form they want. They assasinate two of Benecio's sons and frames the third (No big loss. Lucas's brothers are assholes) intending to kidnap Paige eventually and keep her away as they kill and replace lucas and take over the company. Benecio and Lucas figure it out eventually so instead have a death row prisoner use a glamour and pretend to be Paige so they can track where they are. Karl and Lucas kick their asses with prisoner lady getting killed which uh Benecio revealing he wasnt going to let her go whatever happened.

Anyway Benecio and karl who become somewhat friends and size each other up in a machevalian way, having found equals helps lead the charge against Giles in the final novels. Benecio eventually retiring and letting Lucas take over as he plays with his grandson.

Magnificent ?

Benecio is the epitome of the style that only a true Don could be. Polite, curteous, always friendly but using it to size up and find his opponents weaknesses. He was able to single handedly put his cabal on top and he's one of the few sorcerors in the series not to posses Fanastic Racism as he geuninely treats non-sorcerors as equals. He was able to bait and switch the heroes into thinking he wasn't aware what they were pulling and despite the heavy security. He still found out a way to get out and repay Edward. He knows to intercept threats in advance and even try and get them on your side first like with that dudes son offering the carrot before the stick. And well it kinda takes a bit they eventually figure out the haig brothers plans and use a mole to put them out for good. (tbf their plan was good. It only had issues right near the end and their the only ones who really made him work for it which is why I'll eventually do the Haig brothers here too). He's the epitome of a true mastermind.

Bastard?

Uh not much if I'm being fair but its their. He's a mob boss with illegal activities who will disappear threats and you'll find yourself in the river with cement shoes if you really cross him. But he's still a fairly polite dude who really does think the cabals are whats best for the magical world and they are since the alterative is batshit crazies like Edward and Giles. He also truly loves his son even willing to damn Edward to an awful, awful fate for what he did to his son. And is willing to even lie and sacrifice people like paiges doppleganger if it means they have to win. He even says to his son that he needs to do the hard decisions for the greater good sometimes. So morally grey then normal but I'd say enough.

Conclusion ?

Curious about your thoughts.

A question: assuming the heroes are "they" in "They try to pass it off to Benecio as him being the one in danger instead and that he should get maxmimum security as way to divert their attention away from Lucas", why would they want to divert attention away from Lucas?

Just so I'm understanding, other than that I'm fully prepared to give a [tup].

Benecio sounds like a Keeper!

As 43 said, yes, I've done my own watchthroughs and research on Snark, and I think he can likely be cut from MB, as well. His entry, for reference:

  • Mary Skelter: Nightmares: Dawn Liberation Force leader, Professor Tohjima who is revealed to be The King of Nightmares, Snark, comes to Earth with the intent to destroy the world and remake it in his own image. Planting seeds of the Genius Loci "Jail" across Earth, Snark also raises girls as the "Blood Maidens" and manipulates them to destroy the Jail cores. Poisoning the religious leader of the Order of the Sun, Snark replaces her with his own servant to string them along to working towards his own purpose before slaughtering them. Even when protagonist Jack discovers his true identity, Snark manages to create a convincing cover story and evades suspicion from others by dismantling Jack's argument. Even if the Order of the Sun followers are saved from him killing them, Snark sacrifices his followers, the Marchens, as a backup plan to see his goal of becoming God come true. Ruthless yet intelligent and in possession of an unshakable facade of politeness, Snark cements himself as the most dangerous adversary seen in the game.

So, Snark's really got two inherent issues:

  • In the endgame, when he's apparently won and fused with the Jail, Snark goes off the deep end in masking any sort of politeness or likable personality, instead becoming a laughing mad lunatic screaming himself to be God and proclaiming it's what he was always meant to be and shall wipe out all life to make things how he deems them be best. It's not a Villainous Breakdown, it's legitimately just him getting Drunk on the Dark Side and revealing his true, narcissistic colors that feel very...uncharming or magnificent, to say the least.

  • Secondly, Snark is bad. He's orchestrating the annihilation of all mankind and engaged in brutal murders and mass torturing all along the way, all while having zero redeeming features until the very end that says he's sort of a WIE. Snark goes so far that, when his surrogate daughter Red Riding Hood is pretty much begging to know if he ever loved her, Snark just cruelly smirks, laughs and proclaims she's run out of usage to him and he doesn't care about her anymore. It feels like a pointless bit of sadism that, while on its own not too horrid, together with everything else he does I think is too much. Other villains like say Apophis also commit mass murder and torture, but I think there's a difference here in that Snark has a single possible redeeming feature with pretty much no other positive attributes except his intelligence. He's a nutbar with a god complex, and he comes off way too selfish and cruel to say he's "magnificent" in any sense by the end.

I think Snark is one of those rare examples who is too detestable in personality to hit MB, but also has a singularly redeeming feature to not hit CM. I'm much more sure about cutting Snark from here than CM.

The Venture Bros.: Copycat is a supervillain from New York known publicly for his suave lingo and love of tailored suits, yet less known for also using his duplication power to further his ambitions to be the top villain in the Big Apple. First introduced meeting new councilor Mrs. Monarch at a party, Copycat publicly humiliates both her and the Monarch by luring the latter to his apartment, knocking him out with his own sleep darts, and dressing in his costume to illegally arch Dr. Venture. Using a copy still at the party, Copycat directs the rest of the council to look at the sight and severely weaken both the couple's marriage and positions in the Guild. In his final appearance, Copycat masterminds a heist of Ventech Tower and fully utilizes his team's powers to flawlessly pull off the heist until he intentionally betrays them and makes off with the valuable tech himself. After a miraculous shot causes his helicopter to crash into his apartment, Copycat simply sits back, downs a martini, and calmly accepts death.

I disagree with comparing Snark to Rau... the latter has a deeply damaging backstory that causes issues for his mental health. He's got an ego but come the last episode, he's got it together, he fights to the end and he takes his death with grace as he believes his plans have come together. Snark sounds like a... mess where he seems to be a sadistic psychopath and... idk may or may not care about his homeworld.

Yeah having a god complex ain't in itself disqualifying, what I find disqualifying is if the villain starts ranting and raving "I AM GOD! HOW DARE YOU GET IN MY WAY! I AM THE ONE TO BRING ORDER TO MY NEW WORLD!", it goes from "having an Awesome Ego god complex" to "Ok methinks this dude is a psychopathic narcissist"

Alright, here's one more proposal before I move onto my write-ups...from one of the greatest pieces of film to ever grace screens across the world.

What's the work?

The mastahpiece of animation that is Killer Bean Forever is a hilarious, genuinely entertaining insanity of an animated movie that was created by one man—Jeff Lew—over the course of around a decade. Released in 2009, the movie is set in the crime-ridden metropolis Beantown, where walking, talking, swearing beans go about their daily lives in crime fighting or crime doing.

We primarily follow Jack "Killer" Bean, a hitman bean working for the mysterious Shadow Agency in carrying out assassinations worldwide. Currently on a mission in Beantown to eliminate a former Shadow Bean agent of the Agency, Killer Bean comes up against well-meaning Detective Cromwell, the arrogant DJ nephew of a local mob boss, and the ruthless mob boss himself, Cappuccino.

However, as Killer Bean completes his mission of assassinating the rogue agent "Vagan/Dark Bean", he himself is targeted for elimination by the Agency, leading into the coolest villain in the story...

Who is Jet Bean? What makes him a candidate?

Jet Bean is an Asian Shadow Bean based heavily on popular martial artists, as can be seen by his name resembling Jet Li [lol]

One of the Shadow Agency's most dangerous, powerful beans in employ, Jet Bean is introduced having lunch in a Chinese restaurant. Contacted by the Agency to head to Beantown, Jet Bean prepares to leave, but is urged by the manager to wait so he can give Jet Bean something...and though Jet Bean is gracious at first, it turns out to be a bill. Jet Bean humorously hasn't paid his growing restaurant bill in 3 months, and the manager demands he pay up before he departs the country.

Proclaiming that he'll pay when he gets back, Jet Bean again attempts to leave, but is attacked by the chef due to the owner accusing Jet Bean of saying the food tasted like "ass crack." Jet Bean, without missing a beat, knocks down his assailant and flings a knife expertly to stab the bill out of the manager's hands and pin it to a wall. At which point Jet Bean reiterates "I said, I'll pay when I get back." and calmly exits as the manager blubberingly says it was on the house.

Arriving in Beantown, Jet Bean tracks down a nearby warehouse shooting and, picking up that Killer Bean was behind it, asks two officers on the scene where Killer Bean is. When one of them, a racist ass who continuously insults Jet Bean, accidentally lets it slip that they have Killer Bean in a cell at the police station before mocking Jet Bean's nationality again, Jet Bean casually kicks him flying across the room and allows himself to be arrested...so the cops will bring him right to Killer Bean.

Once they reach the police station? Jet Bean incapacitates the officers detaining him even while in handcuffs, before being surrounded by over a dozen cops and SWAT team members, who order him to stand down. Jet Bean promptly shatters his own handcuffs and the scene cuts away while a hail of gunfire goes....when we cut back, every last one of the cops and SWAT are dead or unconscious.

Striding into the station and grabbing up Killer Bean's treasured guns, Jet Bean confronts Killer Bean and actually gives him his guns back, stating that "You'll need them more than me." When Killer Bean tries to clue Jet Bean in that the Shadow Agency are actually evil, Jet Bean reveals he doesn't care as Killer Bean and Dark Bean did, and just does his job because it's what he's good at.

Jet Bean then duels Killer Bean and whoops his ass at first, dodging Killer Bean's bullets and even deflecting them with his wrist bracelets while throwing Killer Bean around like a rag doll (Literally!). Killer Bean ultimately discards his weapons and fights Jet Bean hand to hand, and though it's a better fight, Jet Bean ultimately uses his surroundings, from seats to jail bars to just Nut Shot attacks to get the one-up and take down Killer Bean.

Praising Killer Bean for his spirit and saying he regrets he now has to kill him, Jet Bean prepares to finish Killer Bean off....only for Killer Bean to pull one last move: throwing a loaded round in the air, then shooting it as it comes down, the direction it heads in confusing Jet Bean for a split second and allowing the bullet to strike and fatally wound him.

Simply accepting his defeat, Jet Bean is told by Killer Bean "'It's over." To which Jet Bean uses his last words to state "Not for you.''"

Is Jet Bean magnificent?

Oh yes, Jet Bean is cool. He's a stoic martial artist who makes his mark as never using guns unlike everyone and their mother in the story, instead using his fists to lethal effect and staying on top of all his opponents. He utterly trounces everyone he comes into contact with except Killer Bean, and even Killer Bean he ultimately beats and is only killed by a one in a million shot Killer Bean takes, to which Jet Bean just accepts his death and uses his last words to assure Killer Bean that he's got a world of pain still to come in his life.

Jet Bean doesn't have a lot of screentime so I can forgive that his intelligence feats aren't that abounding in number, but even then his fighting prowess showcases a lot of quick thinking and acumen, and the fact that he uses two cops to learn Killer Bean's location, assaults one of them for being a racist, and uses said assault to get them to bring him right to Killer Bean? I think it's all enough for a hitman-level character.

Lastly, the character page for Jet Bean says he's a Jerkass because of his attitude at the restaurant which is...utterly incorrect. He's totally gracious at the idea that the manager got him a surprise, and even when the manager is rude, accuses him of dissing on the food, and tries to get him killed, Jet Bean just calmly takes down his attacker and reassures the owner he'll pay his bill when he gets back. It's a funny, cool scene to watch, and while Jet Bean having a bill of 3 months and not paying it is hilarious, it's not played as him being a dick, just for humor.

Is Jet Bean a bastard?

Yah, while he's arguably the least evil of the main villains, Jet Bean still assaults and kills police officers and is trying to murder Killer Bean, and his job as an assassin is absolutely given weight.

And I mean, c'mon, the dude doesn't pay his restaurant bills for 3 months, that's just pure evil! [lol]

Final Verdict?

I'd say he's a great Keep in the "low level badass" sort of way.
