This was removed from TheScrappy.Western Animation without explanation.

I asked this thread about removing it prior but didn't hear anything back. Should it be added back?

Cut these examples from Norm of the North for being groups.

  • Those freaking lemmings... it's ironic how the most punchable characters in the movie are the only ones that can't die.
  • The seals, for their attempted Ugly Cute expressions that are... let's just say less-than-cute. See Uncanny Valley below.
  • The New York citizens, for being too stupid to realize that Norm is a real polar bear.
  • Pretty much any character who exists to remind Norm of his mission. There are a lot of these characters.

[up] I thought the rule of groups is that they only counted if they were all hated to the same extent, and the lemmings are practically interchangeable, from what I've heard. Same with the other characters.

This strikes me as another case, from what I've heard of the movie, of having Scrappy examples make little sense because next to nobody likes the movie in general.

Cutting this example from World's Greatest Dad for not providing context: Kyle, most likely intentionally.

It also basically mentions a secondary reason.

There are Scrappies in NOTN? That's like having a Scrappy page for Dingo Pictures or The Room. People only watch these to make fun of/or enjoy how bad they are.

Pretty sure Po S was cut because it's more or less a Hate Sink. Which cannot qualify for this trope.

Anyway, having tons of experience in the Fi M fandom, do you guys think we should cut Angel on account of being less hated now and more of a Base-Breaking Character? The fact people love to upvote R34 of him and Fluttershy (don't ask) should show he's at the very least Rescued from the Scrappy Heap.

Found this on Violinist of Hameln: Corr Nett was intended to be a Love to Hate type character but she ended up being so unpopular that her role got severely reduced from major supporting character to a Joke Character forever trapped in a Humiliation Conga with no real plot significance after repeated fan complaints about her character.

  • Trom is a much lighter example. While he's not hated by the fanbase by any means, he is the least popular member of the main group by far and ranked considerably lower on the popularity polls as a result. In response to this, he was Put on a Bus for a large chunk of the story and is completely Adapted Out from the OVA.

Found these examples on Monster: Some characters, Eva for being a Rich Bitch to everyone for starters, though she does get better.

What should be the word on the above examples?

Cutting this from Die Hard for insufficient hate: Some people have begun to see Holly McClane as this, seeing as how her husband was nearly killed trying to save her twice, in With a Vengeance their marriage is strained over a petty argument and later on in Live Free or Die Hard, we learn that she's divorced him and can't even remember his name. While the writers do make it clear that John is a difficult person he always apologizes to her, she never even thanks him for his heroic efforts on screen. Not helped by the fact that in the novel the first film is based on Holly is an unpleasant person who cheats on her husband with Ellis and helped fund a hostile military takeover in Chile, killing hundreds of innocents, leading to some Demonization in the fandom. Or that after Die Hard 2 (the last time they were shown to be happy together) there is credible evidence that John is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Looking at YMMV.Hey Arnold, I can't tell if Olga and Lila are scrappies or base-breaking characters:

  • Lila toward the end of the series. While she's not universally hated by any means, you'd be hard-pressed to find people that are honestly fans at this time. Her being an irritating parody Purity Sue didn't stop her from having a fanbase in Seasons 2 and 3, (hell, she was actually The Woobie when she first debuted!) It was mainly due to the Romantic Plot Tumor love triangle of Seasons 4 and 5 (and the inevitable Die for Our Ship sentiments accompanying it) that pushed her into Scrappydom.
  • Similar to Lila is Olga, Helga's older sister. The show established some Hidden Depths with her, however it also made her a hypocrite who goes out of her way to get her parent's attention. Not to mention she doesn't seem to grasp the extent of Helga's Parental Neglect nor does she seem to follow through with promises she made to Helga. For example, in "Student Teacher", Helga pleaded with her to keep any embarrassing stories out. Olga either forgets, or deliberately tells an embarrassing story to the class after Stinky fails a test. And sends Helga to detention afterwards.

I'm wondering if Cletus Kasady is more of a Base-Breaking Character than he is a scrappy. His profile leans a bit to the former, and I got the impression that he had enough of a fanbase to be divided between "people who like how Ax-Crazy edgy he is", "people who think he's boring" and "people who find Narm Charm in him or are otherwise neutral"

Also, I find it strange that Zod is considered both The Scrappy and a Magnificent Bastard, when those tropes seem oxymoronic. Especially when even discounting reboots and retools there's been three of them(the main Krypton Zod, the Pocket Universe Zod and Avruiskin), the first being the one with the MB treatment and Avruiskin being the scrappy one

This was on Cruis'n: USA and World both have a CPU car that always starts out in first place — a blue car in the former, and a red car in the latter. Not only do they start in first, they consistently stay in first through nearly every race. You will learn to hate them with all your heart. To make matters worse, the red car in World almost appears as if it has a smiling face on its fender, as if it's laughing at you.

Troy Burrows of Power Rangers Megaforce—

Troy gained a great deal of fans during his performance in the Vrak is Back two-parter (and beyond). Plus, his actor was a first-time actor, and Jonathan Tzachor's writing of that season was terrible and he focused too much attention on everyone else (particularly Noah). Not to mention, Andrew Gray (Troy's actor) stated that a deleted scene was filmed involving an argument between Troy and his military-bound father before Troy moves. He'd have been a Woobie were it not for Tzachor's decisions.

I recommend he be removed from The Scrappy heap.

Okay, maybe he's not a Base-Breaking Character, but he's certainly not The Scrappy, either (the Base-Breaking Character request was just a bonus). Removed my request to make Troy a Base-Breaking Character.

While I'm unsure if Vrak is Back gives Troy any fan, the deleted scene should not be a factor when considering his Scrappiness. It's not part of the series and not something the majority of fans are aware of.

The thing about Megaforce is that it doesn't have many fans. Most negative opinions about Troy are from people who are ambivalent or negative about this series.

Now there's another reason to remove him from the Scrappy heap. I don't see anyone who thinks positively about (Super) Megaforce in general think negatively about Troy.

Anyway, the deleted scene was just one part of the reason why he shouldn't be The Scrappy. Besides, just because Megaforce in general is critically panned doesn't mean its Red Ranger should be, too.

Plus, lack/shortage of focus doesn't necessarily make for a Scrappy character. Look at Gia of this same series. She was the only member of the team without a focus episode or any development whatsoever, yet she was still well-liked (even though she was a Base-Breaking Character).

A lot of the negative opinions surrounding Prince Tricky are from people who don't like Starfox Adventures as a whole. I would presume that's enough for him to not qualify? Most people who played the game either don't mind him, or love him. It's not like Slippy Toad.

Btw fun fact. If your wondering Tv Lubber was suspended for writing long gushing statements about Troy on the ymmv page and removing any negativity about him because they like him. So I'm not sure there opinion is the one you want to trust here

That being said I think I'm in agreement with the idea that the show doesn't have enough fans to justify either Base-Breaking Character entries or The Scrappy entries as its way to hated for either by the fan base.

The show not having enough fans is an argument based on notability. The size of the fandom doesn't matter.

The relative size of the character hatedom within the work fandom matters.

We don't have much information on what the series' fans think about Troy. Most of the vitriol towards him comes from detractors, so that doesn't count.

Regarding Fairy Tail's Scrappy page, the character Minerva is on both that page and Fairy Tail's Base-Breaking Character page. Are the two tropes not mutually exclusive? Can we get rid of one or the other example?

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!
