So, how's the official Funi translations so far? (Specifically, does it use the word "Nuts!" to translate Admiral Okita's "Bakame!" in the first episode?)

Also, do they keep the original names of the characters as-is?

So I've managed to find Funi's dubs of Yamato 2199, and...

It is pretty good. Too early to say if it's Superlative Dubbing, but still pretty good. And I could have sworn I heard Kira Buckland as Yuki Mori, until I took a look at ANN... (Jossed.)

Also, the teaser trailer for the fourth Yamato 2202 film was just released...

Desler lives. (As if there was ever any doubt...)

New episodes are online on the sub

So Gatlantis can only hit the shoot button but has no repair capacity. Interesting. Makes you wonder where they get all their toys (and explains why their ships before the series where such Glass Cannon s)

Oh god, Blonde Gamillan Dude, Keyman, is going to be Dessler's son, isn't he.

Turns out Gatlantis are a manufactured race, unable to individually reproduce. According to their boss this makes them unable to be biased by human needs and thus able to bring 'peace'.

That could be too. Wonder if all the 'Allied' Gamillans are secretly still Desler-followers or if Keyman belongs to a hidden faction. Seems the Gamillan Civil War is still ongoing.

Turns out Gatlantis are a manufactured race, unable to individually reproduce. According to their boss this makes them unable to be biased by human needs and thus able to bring 'peace'.

So the 2202 Gatlanteans are kinda like the Zentraedi from Super Dimension Fortress Macross, except they aren't gigantic and aren't affected as much emotionally. (Nope, music sung by an Idol Singer won't stop them in their tracks, even if Sabera does like playing the Comet Empire theme on the pipe organ.) And it lends credence to the theory of Touko Katsuragi being one of Sabera's espionage clones.

I also like the the implication that Teresa might be one of the few Aquarians who decided to stay even after the rest of the race moved out... Or perhaps Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence?

Slight necro, but here's the first 10 minutes of the fourth film:

Holy sh*t, Dessler... That's a lot of missiles on your ship! (As if already packing a Wave-Motion Gun wasn't enough...) Also, 'tis a shame. I liked that white Calakmul. Too bad it's less of a Cool Starship than Dessler's new Gatlantean-made Deusura(?). (*watches a bit more*) And those missiles are teleported into the target area with a matter transfer device?! Damn, boi!

Gyah! Triple post!

Trailers for the fifth film (premiering in Japan on May 25), plus new cast members—including theme song singer Isao Sasaki himself:

Also, Episodes 11 to 14 are already out at the "unconventional" sources, though Yamato 2202 will get an English dub from Funimation this May.

This show needs to either be on Toonami or have the first season air on Netflix so everyone can see a good space opera.

Even being six or so years old, 2199’s production values blow other shows away.

The older one made it to the US as Star Blazers so there may be a chance down the road for it to show up.

[up]The dub is running weekly on Crunchyroll, FU Ni Now and VRV (under the title Star Blazers 2199 no less) but that’s a limited audience, which is why I want it on Netflix so badly. It makes Voltron look like crap! More people deserve to see this.

It may be a bit challenging for Cartoon Network to pick it up. I don't recall them even running the older Star Blazers. Netflix who knows what is going on there. But they have picked up some oddball anime in the recent past so I see no reason why they couldn't pick up Starblazers unless Funimation is avoiding Netflix for some reason.

Never mind I found out why. Funimation has specific streaming rights to it that is why it likely won't make Netflix anytime soon. The history there is kind of hit and miss.

However Crunchyroll is increasingly popular with the US anime fandom over Cartoon Network and even Netflix.

[up]Well the season isn’t done, but when it is they should stream it. And FU Ni seems to have a working relationship with Netflix, handling the home release of Seven Deadly Sins.

Just more people need to see it.

Funimation has quite a few shows that never make it to Netflix and there could be any number of reasons for that. Like I said I have never seen the original on streaming services like Netflix before. Apparently Toonami Reactor had the original Starblazers on it twice. That particular service is dead and gone though and it never aired on Toonami Tv blocks for some reason.

The show ending up on Toonami is possible since a lot of Funimation shows end up on Toonami.

The last episode of 2199 aired today with 2202 set to air starting next week. This so needs to be on a bigger platform.

Been a while since I last posted here.

Anyway, the first 11 minutes of Yamato 2202 's sixth film (premiering November 2 with an all-night marathon in Hiroshima on October 27):

Still not over the reveal that Klaus Keymann (sp?) is actually related to Desler. Also, a bit sad to see what's probably one of the last roles of Unshō Ishizuka before his untimely passing.

Trailer for the seventh and final film (eps. 23 to 26) of Yamato 2202:

(Sauce.)

Meanwhile, I've managed to watch episodes 19 to 22. However, I might do a rewatch to make sure I didn't miss anything else. But the standout moments so far:

  • With Unshō Ishizuka's passing, I thought that his character—Captain Hijikata—would go out in a Heroic Sacrifice to save the Yamato from the cliffhanger situation in episode 18. Not quite. His character is still alive, though Hijikata wasn't speaking much in episode 20, IIRC. He speaks again in episode 21, but obviously with a different voice actor.
  • Yuki getting amnesia (again) and losing her memories of the last four years? Damnit, it's like Kaede Azusagawa all over again...
  • Berger's back, all right! Also, interesting to see the Gamillans modifying the Andromeda-class design for their fleets.
  • So "Plan G"—involving the Ginga—is actually the "Izumo Plan" rearing its head once again? (And also explains why the Ginga crew are mostly female.) Although the idea of artificial reproduction reminded me of Tarak and Mejele. Meanwhile, the idea of replacing frail human limbs with prosthetics reminded me of either the Living Dead Battalion or the Adeptus Mechanicus.
  • Amidst Earth's fleets of newly assembled wave-motion-gun warships and unmanned fighters (thanks to the Time Fault) was a warning about over-reliance on cold, calculating A.I. in war—a similar message/theme expressed in Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.
  • Zordar and Sabera's backstory... Just that backstory. Not to mention the creation of Zordar parallels that aforementioned warning about over-reliance on A.I. After all, A.I. Is a Crapshoot.
  • On a lighter note, I'd love to see seiyuu connection fanart of Haruka Amami, Kotori Minami and Dia Kurosawa wearing those Ginga uniforms.

They’ve begun uploading new 2202 episodes on FU Ni NOW now that there’s enough of a buffer.

[up] Well, the last film will be premiering on March 1 in Japan. So give it a month or two (unless Funi somehow releases it first) and the season is ripe for binging (or re-binging, as the case may be).

Also good lord, that Bait-and-Switch with Yamamoto was unexpected yet welcome. Poor poor Kato though...
