Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

LRLEO tag:

%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

[up]I see very few potential examples from outside real life, and it has no reason to stick around as a definition-only page, so it might take a trip to TRS once the backlog gets dealt with.

Re: Something on the previous page: I don't know if there's a Word of Mod statement either way on this (and/or a relevant Administrivia page), but my opinion is that if the launcher of a trope intends for it to be NRLEP and/or IUEO from the beginning, then they shouldn't need to go through this thread or TRS to get the trope put in those indexes.

Do note that I have little experience with TLP, so someone else might be more qualified to provide input on this.

[up] In my experience, that's true. If the people on a TLP draft agree there should be no real-life examples, the page doesn't need to go through the usual process.

TLP can declare a trope as being In-Universe Examples Only or No Real Life Examples, Please! without the need for a further discussion in the forum threads.

Book Ends. Was this voted on? It's not on the Sandbox page.

I noticed on the page's history that someone once deleted Real Life examples with this edit reason:

more coincidences rather than deliberate use of bookending. And some are just shoehorned in, "You begin and end the day asleep"? Really? Left those that were probably orchestrated to deliberately form bookends.

There is now a real-life sub-page BookEnds.Real Life (mostly restored examples, but not all).

I'm torn on this: I do think that this is a narrative trope and it should be intentional, on the other hand, I find some of the real-life examples rather beautiful. For example this one:

  • Mark Twain was born shortly after the appearance of Halley's Comet in 1835. He often predicted he'd go out with it and did, dying one day after its reappearance in 1910.

What do you think?

[up] Simply liking it isn't enough. It's a narrative trope and therefore should not have Real Life examples. Some of these also feel like violations of Examples Are Not General:

  • Your parents take care of you when you're younger, and you usually end up taking care of them when they get older.
  • An example pertaining to most people's days- they start and end in a bed.
  • Many people are born in hospital rooms and die in hospital rooms.
Or in some cases, Speculative Troping:
  • The planet Earth's very first moments manifested as a hellish, molten landscape, as will its final moments billions of years from now when the Sun reaches its 'red giant' phase.
And then we get both at the same time:
  • Should humanity go extinct, then many of our iconic buildings will actually deteriorate in the reverse order of how and when they were built: the more modern skyscrapers will be among the first to crumble away, while structures lasting since the ancient times (such as the Pyramids of Egypt) will take millennia to disappear.
Cut all of this.

Cut all of this.

That's not how it's done here. You can state your opinion, but this requires voting, usually on the crowner.

That said, I also favour zapping the real life section.

These are the only RL examples of the trope, but they do look bad.

  • The (in)famous fire and brimstone preacher Johnathan Edwards often delivered his terrifying sermons in a calm, quiet voice.
  • Pol Pot was by all accounts very calm and spoke with a soft voice.

The last line is falling afoul of ROCEJ, pointing out a group like that, right?

Or maybe just the mention Current, bringing Time into this...

Values Dissonance is one of those tropes which by definition toes the line. The only problem I see there is the "current".

My God, What Have I Done? is supposed to be about someone committing a really awful act and then instantly regretting and trying to make up for it. Its Real Life section has examples of people regretting simply supporting something whose actions wasn't their fault or doing something that just had simply undesirable effects, both which can be easily brushed off.

I just launched the "Half-Witted Hillbilly" trope, and preemptively placed it in NRLEP as it does deal with a stereotype that's more hurtful to some groups than a lot of people think.

I had it as NRLEP in the TLP and no one said anything, but I see there's some debate about how much permission is needed to do that.

[up][up] You got me, I can't think of any non-bashing real-life examples either. But this is the Internet, after all.

(Someone in TLP did propose the outbreaks of pellagra in the South as a real-life example, but I'd say that was really reaching).

[up] I did see that, but I'm still learning the ropes and was getting some mixed signals, so I merely wanted to show I was acting in good faith.

I have been going through, and I wonder if either God Is Evil or God Is Good are capable of having real life sections, considering that theology is a contentious debate in and of itself. Additionally, I think that calling either truth in television, when theology is a contentious debate, is stretching it a bit, although if the tropes are about people believing the premises of the trope, and not only that God is good or evil within the narrative of the story, then I can be a little more lenient on the truth in television thing. Real life does not have a single narrative, and the nature of God's morality is dependent on the perspective of individuals.

[down] Ok.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
