Fixing zero context examples

From the Video Game sub page of Does This Remind You of Anything?

• All over the place with Iris Heart in Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory. The only reason why it's here is because she never gets to do what she says thanks to circumstances.

DTRYOA is about a situation (or situations) from a work that reminds the audience of another (usually real life or suggestive) situation. Nothing in this entry mentions what specific scenario Iris Heart reminds the players of, and I don't feel like re-watching each play through of Victory to know what her character is supposed to be. At worst this example falls into Fan Myopia.

• Does This Remind You of Anything?: All of Iris Heart's scenes resemble that of BDSM, from her innuendos to the way she tortures her opponents. Downplayed as it's only a borderline example, since said scenes are pretty much exactly what they remind you of. Iris Heart just never gets a chance to... finish.

Funny.Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory:

• Noire complains so much until Plutia gets fed up, transforms into Iris Heart and teaches her a lesson, resulting in breaking Noire. This continues even in the Basilicom, where Noire still sounds like a Broken Record, while Plutia is rather... satisfied.
  Plutia: Ehehe. I gave Noire some good service... Yummmmm! I'm so full now!

The former entry was an edit done by me, since that entry was also a ZCE. But yeah I agree, I'll just crosswick those examples to the sub page.

I found that Arx Fatalis does have lots of ZCEs and poorly written examples, so I commented out obvious ZCEs.

I spent the first half of yesterday removing every ZCE from Neptunia. The ones I didn't remove were either hidden or moved to the sub-pages on Characters.Neptunia but rewritten with actual context. I did the same with mk2, Victory, and its anime adaptation months ago, and I might do the same with the other games sometime later (like next year?)

Also yes. Speaking as someone who's never watched this series, this example does not tell me much about the scenes where Envy is unnecessarily cruel, other than that they occur quite often.

Also, does anyone else feel that Spy Fiction has a lot of ZCEs? So many examples are in the format of (work) - "(genre of spy fiction)", without elaborating on why it fits in that genre.

It depends; if it's meant to just be an index, then there's not really such a thing as required context. If it's a trope as the pagetype implies, then yeah they're lacking context.

I thought we treated Genres like indexes.

That is something to consider. I would personally say spy fiction is a genre, so as you pointed out, it would not require context (even if I would prefer it). Thing is, a few work pages do use it like a trope and include it in lists of trope examples (like Pandemic and Spycraft: The Great Game), so maybe it is a trope? Or maybe it's being misused? (Perhaps this is outside this thread then?)

VideoGame.Plantsvs Zombies 2 Reflourished has quite a few examples without context; I've had familiarity with the mod, but I dunno how I'll be able to add context to them.

From the Video Game folder on Ron the Death Eater:

• Touhou Project: With some characters, it gets up to a Memetic Mutation, as shown on Memes.Touhou Project. The opposite is rarer, due to White-and-Grey Morality in canon.

This one is an interesting case: the entry used to have examples, but most of them felt less into "a morally-sounded character gets demonized by the fandom despite their actions in the work proper saying otherwise (usually out of hatred for the chara in question)" and more into "a morally-sounded character is re-interpenetrated, in a fan/derivative work that explicitly takes place in a different setting from canon, as an immoral witch regardless if its based on the author's opinion on that character", and as a result all of the examples from that folder were cut along with the other folders/sub-pages. The problem is that it not only did away with any evidence the example the example used to have, but it also created a case of Examples Are Not General (since we don't know which Touhou is being unfairly demonized) AND Fan Myopia (outside of it's fan base, most people wouldn't know what Touhou is and who their characters are).

If all the examples were removed one by one as not fitting the trope, then the header should be removed as well, because we don't have any actual examples from the work.

Yeah, I'll just cut it. Most of the examples from that game fall more into fanon-induced Adaptational Villainy/Adaptational Jerkass.

On 2012:

• Anvilicious:
  • An earthquake causes a crack right between the reaching fingers of God and Adam in the Sistine Chapel.
  • An aircraft carrier, a physical embodiment of American military might, crashes into the White House.
  • "The whole continent of Africa has risen."

Sounds like three ZCE to me because I don't get what's the moral in either of these.

They come off as zce or misuse to me too since they don't cover a moral and nothing mentioned come off as morals to me either.

I can see what the second is going for, I think it's trying to say that America's military is destroying America, but like... that's my interpretation and I could be totally wrong anyway

Someone cut this from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End calling it a ZCE but I don't see what context is missing

• Subbing vs. Dubbing: Frieren's Dub Voice. It is noticeably deeper (though not excessively so) compared to sub. As far as the fandom is concerned, either you really like it and it fits her character or it doesnt.

Literature.The Last Dragon Chronicles has Zero and Partial Context Examples all over the place. I've commented out as many as possible. I vaguely remember reading The Fire Within when I was 12, but it's been so long that I don't have the work knowledge required to fix any of the examples.

It's been a while since I've ever watched any VTuber-related content that wasn't music videos, but I found examples of this on Characters.V Shojo under the Berserk Button example on the catch-all talents folder:

• Calling Nazuna "pettan/flat." She is "boing-boing" dammit!

Compared to every other example that highlights how furious the talent's get when their Berserk Buttons are pushed, Nazuna's examples does little to explain how livid she gets when people comment on her chest in a derogatory manner, let alone add anything after the "Calling Nazuna "pettan/flat"" part like say, "makes her VERY angry". And of course, the link to the video is dead, making the example essentially meaningless.
