Visual Novel / Shall We Date?: Oz

Go To

Shall We Date?: Oz is an installation in the Shall We Date? series. The English translation was released in March 2016. As the title suggests, it's a continuation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

It's been years since Dorothy Gale had travelled to Oz. She remembers the adventures she shared with her friends and the danger she faced. Now she's nearing the age of seventeen and is still living with her aunt, uncle and Toto Jr., the son of the original Toto. Suddenly, three strange men barge in her house and somehow know her name. It turns out that these men are her three friends from Oz: the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion. They have come to collect Dorothy and take her back to Oz for her birthday celebration. Once back in the Emerald City, Solomon, the Wizard of the South, decides to let Dorothy choose which man she would like to have as a boyfriend. Her choices include her three friends, the Great Oz, the good Wizards Solomon and Norton, and the revived Wizard of the West Wesley. Who will she choose?

Shall We Date?: Oz includes examples of:

  • Adaptational Attractiveness: The reason why the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Tin Man have human forms, Oz is much younger, and the Witches are now handsome Wizards.
  • Adaptation Name Change: The Tin Man's real name in the original novels is Nick Chopper; he's named Heartmann here. Due to the witches' gender flips, the witches Glinda and Locasta become the wizards Solomon and Norton. The player can impose this on Dorothy if they change her name.
  • Cast Full of Pretty Boys: As is typical for an Otome Game.
  • Coming of Age Story: Almost literally, in Dorothy's case, given that the ostensible reason she's brought back to Oz is to celebrate her 17th birthday.
  • Faceless Masses: Everyone who isn't a named character, naturally.
  • Famed In-Story: Everyone in the main cast is this to the inhabitants of Oz... except Wesley.
  • Gender Flip: The Wizards Solomon, Norton, and Wesley are gender bent versions of Glinda, the Witch of the North, and the Wicked Witch of the West, respectively.
  • I Choose to Stay: What you can do if you achieve the True Ending.
  • Living Legend: The main cast (sans Wesley) is this, being greeted by cheering townsfolk wherever they go.
  • Multiple Endings: There are three endings available, which are the Friends Ending, the Farewell Ending, and the True Ending. Oddly enough, the Farewell Ending was used before as the default bad ending.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The Scarecrow becomes Crowlie, the Cowardly Lion becomes Leonardo, and the Wicked Witch of the West becomes the Wicked Wizard Wesley.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: Toto the dog, as in the source material.
  • Poster-Gallery Bedroom: An option for the dress-up/room-decoration aspect of the game, with different posters featuring the male characters that can be put on the wall of your virtual room.
  • Punny Name: All of them, excluding Oz, have puns related to their characters.
  • Signs of the End Times: As the story unfolds, severe earthquakes and other strange events occur as the time nears for Dorothy to Restart the World.
  • Talking Animal: Present in Oz, with Leonardo ruling over an entire Forest of these and a few making minor appearances.
  • Virtual Paper Doll: Part of the game mechanic for the Oz+ version.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Wesley and Oz, the older and more experienced counterparts to the younger (and more recently human) Crowlie, Leonardo, and Heartmann, spend much of their time sniping at each other when they're not acting in agreement.
  • Wizards Live Longer: At least, these do.
