YMMV / Ultraman Blazar

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • When Takuma recounts the events of "The Mountain Roars" in the Recap Special, Saburota mentions that "Blazar really gets around," at least in the subbed version.
    • Many have pointed out that Varallon looks a bit like male genitalia if viewed from certain angles.
  • Awesome Music:
    • "Bokura no Spectra" continues the tradition of incredible Ultra Series themes with Hiroshi Kitadani giving a powerful vocal performance cheering Blazar on to gain victory backed by a rousing and Hot-Blooded electric guitar tune.
    • Blazar's first ending theme, "BLACK STAR" is an rocking ending theme coupled with MindaRyn's incredible high notes and the slowly intensifying guitars.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Gedos' death: Blazar impales the creature laterally on his Spiral Burrade, and its skin turns brown and crispy like shioyaki (a grilled salmon dish) before exploding. After Blazar turned his Spiral Burrade into a fishing rod to catch Gedos with.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • With Blazar's design cues and mysterious otherwordly nature many speculate that he's connected to Ultraman Nexus at the very least thematically and that this series is a pseudo-remake/celebration akin to the past two series Ultraman Trigger: New Generation Tiga and Ultraman Decker.
    • Because of Ultraman Blazar's primal sounding grunts, his use of a spear in battle and the pose he makes after transforming resembling a tribal hunting prayer, coupled with the fact that his stated homeworld, M421, is uninhabitable in real life, a number of fans have speculated that Blazar could be the Ultra equivalent of a caveman.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • The Cicada Men's human names (Hoichi Tsukushi, Cicci Kuroiwa, Michi Niize, Kanade Higurashi) in Episode 9 are all derived from those of certain cicada species, making their extraterrestrial nature predictable for entomologists.
    • Blazar has red and blue lines as his tribal markings connecting to the Color Timer. In human biology, two of our blood vessels are artery (red) and vein (blue), pumping blood from and to the human heart respectively. Take a guess of the other character Tomoya Warabino is known for?
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • #10: Blazar stopping Gento from killing the parent Demaaga and orphaning its child. It's also implied Blazar did this due to the fact it would sadden Gento's son, Jun, who notes that Demaaga is a Non-Malicious Monster, who simply wants to protect its child.
    • #12: The Reveal that Blazar ran away from Gebalga not just out of fear, but rather for the sake of protecting his host. This repairs the bond he shares with Gento with the two fighting against Gebalga once more.
    • #18: Gento expects his family to be mad or disappointed in him when he arrives late due to needing to deal with Irugo. However, they are actually proud of him since they saw the footage of him saving the TV crew from the rubble caused by the kaiju.
    • #22: The plot revolves around an insurance agent struggling to sell homeowner insurance policies in an era where kaiju attacks are a fact of life. After being down on his luck, failing to sell those policies, he meets a widow whom he bonds with and later risks his own life to save her when such an attack happens in the town where she lives.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: Yu Dobashi is one of the most egregious examples of Humans Are the Real Monsters in the Ultra Series. He may be an approachable person on the surface, the moment he is questioned about the V99 he comes off as self-absorbed and paranoid man who doesn't have the slightest problem of getting rid of any evidence related to said aliens. Once his crimes come to light in the finale, it was revealed that he shot down a spacecraft belonging to the aforementioned V99 aliens and even attempts to commit genocide by having all GGF forces around the world wipe out every V99 spaceships entering the Earth, when in truth they were actually a race of benevolent aliens.
  • Memetic Mutation: See the franchise page.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Yu Dobashi crossed it before the start of the series when he shot down an unarmed spacecraft belonging from a race of benevolent aliens. If his constant tendency of lying and antagonism towards Emi to cover up his act wasn't enough, but attempting genocide against said alien race out of Fantastic Racism finally seals the deal.
  • Narm:
    • Blazar wrangling control from Gento in #10 over not wanting to kill Demaaga is a tense scene, though it loses a bit of weight as it's visualized in a way that looks like Blazar is trying to beat himself up.
    • Episode 15 teeters over the edge of being a Shot-for-Shot Remake of the Gavadon episode, with enough differences that you can excuse the similar plotting and staging as a Mythology Gag… until the end, when the kids separate and one says he’s going to write to his friends (as opposed to texting or emailing them, like most kids today would).
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Even though Kazunori Yokomine was the one who summoned Nijikagachi in #7 and #8, he is nowhere to be seen when Nijikagachi returns in #17.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Waves were made in the fandom when multiple Kaiju and aliens who haven't been seen since their debut in the Showa Era would make their return in Blazar including Garamon and Gavadon's larval form which were both featured alongside the new Kaiju in a promotional showcase, and Alien Cannan appearing in episode six of the series proper.
    • Episode 17 featured an obscured appearance by Zamsher, who'd been absent in mainline installments since his debut.
  • Win Back the Crowd: Pre-release reception to the show thus far has been positive.
    • The series being directed by Kiyotaka Taguchi, whose work on Ultraman Z was beloved, drew many fans to the series as they are interested in seeing what he'll bring to the table.
    • The sheer amount of new kaiju, along with the returning ones not being the ones that many fans had grown weary of seeing again (such as Gomora and Pagos), also managed to draw a lot of fan interest and excitement, with hopes of future series following suit in going back to using mostly original kaiju being raised.
