YMMV / The Owl and The Frog

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor:
    • For those troubled by Sasha's schemes to trick Luz into kissing Anne, lay waste to Tadpole Pond and allow the toad army to brutally beat a helpless Uodeela, it's really satisfying when Luz used her Calamity power to fling Sasha out of town via a tornado.
    • Belos has been nothing but a bad influence to Sasha, so it's really cathartic to see Sasha get rid of him for good in "Curing Uodeela".
    • For all her cruel treatment to the witches, Odalys gets her retribution when the witches trick her and get her arms ripped off in the process.
  • Crack Pairing: Luz/Anne become the story's main couple, and it counts as a Crossover Ship. Marcy/Amity also count as this.
  • Fandom Rivalry: Surprisingly, considering the Friendly Fandoms The Owl House and Amphibia usually are with each other, this has developed one between fans of The Owl House of Amphibia due to the similar plot points to the point that ChampionElCid actually left a review accusing Iron117Prime of stealing his ideas. Fortunately, the two authors made up, and in the third chapter of his story, Iron117Prime went on record and stated that his story was inspired by ChampionElCid's story but made it clear that his story will play out differently from the latter's.
  • Funny Moments: In this fic's version of "Toadcatcher", Sasha is quick to welcome Gustav along with Percy and Braddock, despite him fighting against them in the battle of Tadpole Pond. When he later asks her why, she essentially reveals it's so she can tell Anne, "my younger amphibian friend can beat up your younger amphibian friend", which he is unimpressed by. It's just so hilariously petty.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Belos pressures Sasha into sending Luz into his world to help him learn glyphs for notorious purposes. In canon Owl House, Luz suffers hard depression after learning that she indirectly helped Belos with his plan for the Day of Unity, to the point where she develops implied suicidal thoughts. The fact that Belos here is trying to push Luz into the same situation makes it hard for readers to continue knowing what's going to happen.
    • "What If... Luz and Anne switched places?" has Sasha falls further into Belos' influence and possibly control. In "Thanks to Them", Belos has complete control over Hunter which drains his life force after the possession. If not for Flapjack, Hunter would be gone for good. It's hard not to worry Sasha will potentially fall into a similar fate.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight:
    • The story's first arc has Luz going to a sleepover with Anne, Sasha and Marcy awhile after being friends with them. The "Amphibia and The Owl House crossover" at San Diego Comic-Con 2021 has its two main protagonists wanting to have a sleepover only to have to promise to have it in another life in another universe. "The Sleepover" came out 7 months before the crossover happened; by then, Luz and Anne already had their sleepover this way.
    • Luz and Marcy writing a fanfic together is nice enough upon first reading. Come the tail end of Amphibia season 3, Anne admits to Sasha that neither of them ever really engaged in their friend's interests, sleeping through her favorite movie at every sleepover. The addition of Luz to the cast means Marcy finally has someone to talk shop with, and she clearly enjoys their mutual interest in fantasy.
  • He's Just Hiding: Many readers feels that Uodeela isn't really gone given the similar situation happened to Eda. They were proven absolutely right.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • "Chapter 33: Maddie, Marcy and Luz" reveals that a wind glyph was created by Sheresade when she visited the Boiling Isles and met Philip Wittebane. " In Them's the Breaks, Kid" (which aired a few weeks after the chapter's publishing), Luz discovers a glyph combo for wind.
    • Shuffollower complained in a review for Thomas Holmes' canonized story "Premonition" that with how slowly the story is updated, it'll likely take ChampionElCid two more years to finish the story after Arc 5 was completed. Champion outright confirms this in the author's notes at the end of "Froggy Little Christmas".
  • I Knew It!:
    • A large portion of reviewers guessed that the voice in Sasha's head is actually Emperor Belos. Come "True Colors (Part One)", and they were proven right.
    • The theory about Amity being the witchling who had been captured by a Cloak-Bot is confirmed in "Chapter 49: Two Worlds, Two Families".
  • Jerkass Woobie: Sasha. She's willing to do anything to ruin Anne's friendship with Luz so she can keep Anne all to herself. However, the reason behind this is because she's afraid Anne will reject and leave her, similar to her father. Her neglectful family life and the fact that her mother teaches her manipulative skills allow readers to sympathize Sasha more.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains:
    • Ms. Byrant appeared in just two chapters, and she becomes widely hated due to her homophobic and fundamental views.
    • Emperor Belos is more personally despicable in the story, due to his role in sabotaging Sasha's friendships with the other girls and possessing her when she stands up to him.
    • Sasha's father Chris is a Narcissist who only cares about others' gratitude towards him and not even considers once he is the problem, especially towards Sasha.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Although he's probably crossed it long ago, what makes Belos truly irredeemable here is when he manipulates Sasha and destroys her personal relationships in the process.
    • Odalys crossed it when she imposed high student debt to prevent other species or low-class newts from entering Newtopia University. And if that didn't do it, then her participation in the experiments on toads and witches (including her sadistic enjoyment in hurting Amity) certainly did.
    • Andrias seems to have crossed it when he blew up Wartwood, killing off half the resistance.
  • Paranoia Fuel: Sasha gets infected by a piece of Belos' slime, which allows him to communicate and manipulate her, making readers worry about Sasha's fate as the story continues.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: Ms. Byrant's condemnation of Luz as a witch is very detestably terrifying to read as many LGBT people nowadays still face such accusations, especially from religious fanatics.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Some readers didn't react well when the author announced Dr. Jan would be Adapted Out. He later recognized this and had Dr. Jan play a different role in the story.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids??: The story contains more real-life issues, such as discrimination and unhealthy relationships, and darker elements than both shows.
