YMMV / Mega Man Maker

Go To

  • Archive Panic: For a fan game, Mega Man Maker boasts an impressive number of maps created by its community, having over 500,000 registered levels since its launch in 2017.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Bounce Man. While some enjoy him as a boss due to his unique mechanics and pattern, others dislike him for his NES-inaccurate sprite and occasional glitchiness, such as getting stuck in walls.
  • Breather Boss: Toad Man is still one of the easiest bosses to deal due to his very simple pattern and is often pitted as a mid-boss in levels with multiple bosses, or as another boss' partner since you must keep attacking to prevent him from using his fullscreen Rain Flush.
  • Broken Base: Stemming from the reveal of the Hero’s Command Selection, another weapon themed after a character from Super Smash Bros., which lets Mega Man call any four weapons in the game at random to use. Some fans think the weapon looks fun to use; others are concerned about how impractical for level design it could be, and how its One-Hit Kill Kamikazee attack could break boss fights wide open.
  • Camera Screw: Badly placed cojoined and transitional screens can cause the camera to freak out, especially if placed near a vertical one without ladders or the boss doors.
  • Default Setting Syndrome: New players will often use the choices that are default in the editor such as only Mega Man and his default settings, Cut Man Tiles, Cut Man as boss, Mets and Guts BG 1 (or Cut BG as it was introduced in a later update), among others. Lampshaded with the description for Cut Man's Tiles.
Cut Man Tiles: Iconic, if only because 90 percent of Mega Man Maker levels use it.
  • Demonic Spiders: The "big and bulky" type of enemies that deal a ton of damage and are hard to avoid, like Big Eye and Power Muscle, are particularly dangerous since they can take a ton of punishment before going down and don't need to land more than a handful of hits to throw you back to the last checkpoint.
  • Game-Breaker: It was inevitable given how open ended the level creation software is.
    • Thanks to the first slot allowing infinite ammo, returning broken weapons such as Metal Blade and Thunder Beam are now even more deadly, since you don't have to worry about running out of ammo (not that it is a problem in the first place, as they consume little ammo already). Adding to this, weapons that are powerful but consume lots of ammo also won't have a problem with the infinite ammo slot, allowing to take down foes hard without their weakness getting in the way.
    • The Hyper Bomb was given a massive buff in the game, going from a Scrappy Weapon in the original to an insanely powerful explosive. Not only does it explode on contact, but it creates a giant plus-shaped cloud of explosions when it blows up, wiping out enemies in a massive area.
    • The Mega Ball allows one to perform chains of mid-air bounces with proper timing. When you fire it close to a wall, it results in even easier endless wall climbing, which can often beat the point of thinking up platforming setups and puzzles involving this weapon.
    • The Magma Bazooka can hit any enemy, even bosses, multiple times with its barrage of shots, unlike in its home game. While this is more balanced against regular enemies, if a boss is even slightly weak to the weapon, they can be taken down in just a few shots.
    • Bass' Double Jump can virtually crush most platforming challenges not designed specifically for it, just like in its home game.
    • Proto Man's Proto Strike, a charge shot that doesn't need to be charged and can be spammed as fast as a regular buster shot, essentially annihilates anything that doesn't have Mercy Invincibility, defense or immunity against it.
    • Roll's Roll Swing has the honor of having the ability to bypass shields, armor, and even bosses' Mercy Invincibility, allowing her to shred bosses when given the opportunity. While this is apparently balanced out by the weapon being close-ranged, players savvy with dealing damage up close (such as Zero players) will see no problem with this.
    • Among the 1.8 additions to the vast arsenal, Wave Burner takes the cake. It is extremely powerful against larger and bulkier enemies, incinerating them in less than two seconds (at most). Not to mention the large ammo capacity rivaling that of Screw Crusher: tapping the Attack button is enough to conserve the already-massive weapon energy supply.
    • Adding to the above, Uber Chain also fits the bill. Although the activation requires filling up the weapon bar first, the result is well worth it: the character becomes invincible for 10 seconds. However, that period can be easily prolonged by grabbing Weapon Energy pickups or engaging the enemies up-close (randomized Critical Hits add even more time). All of this applies when Uber Chain isn't placed in the first weapon slot; in that case, the invincibility lasts until the entire level is complete.
  • Goddamned Bats: Any enemy that fires a lot of projectiles or homing projectiles, or that spawn infinitely but don't deal a lot of damage, is this. They (probably) won't kill you instantly but players love to put them on long ladder climbs or in such quantity that avoiding damage is nearly impossible without some form of protection.
  • Good Bad Bugs: The one-way teleporter was unplanned, but many grew to use it. It was later treated as an Ascended Glitch by the development team.
  • Hype Backlash: The announcement of On/Off switches gained a surprising amount of dislike. While most fans were excited for the feature itself, the backlash stemmed from the fact that it was the only new feature revealed in the game’s third anniversary announcement, in contrast to the major reveals in the previous trailers.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Part of the fanbase reacted badly when Blast Man was revealed, since they thought there were too many explosion bosses.
  • Memetic Mutation: Even a level maker like this can have memes.
    • "Deadly Cutsman" by "TehJoos" was a level created full of pixel perfect jumps and mook spam, but still beatable by skilled players. Since then, it's spawned many imitators, such as "The Deadly Cutsman", "Deadly Bombman", and "Diddly Cooksman.".
    • It's also quite popular to spell out "MEME" using M-Tanks and E-Tanks. Even "Aquatic Ruin", one of the example levels, had this in a hidden room!
    • Pronto Man. It became a forum joke after a user misspelled Proto Man's name while asking him to be implemented in the game. It became an Ascended Meme with one of the forum user legends (who's who) being the real pronto man and when a bot named after him was added to the Discord server.
    • Illegar. It become a meme when someone tried to apply as a "planner" by arguing that part of his task would be hunting down "illegar mods" even when WreckingPrograms doesn't mind those mods. It later that the infamous word belongs to Fanduber, the former Malaysian forum troll who infamously known for his bad English grammar.
    • "You hate me, right?" Explanation
    • Heat Ladder. Since someone requested that ladder and many became surprised, it became popular to jokingly ask for the Heat Ladder and hail it. It was officially implemented in 1.5.0.
    • "We need more explosions" Explanation
    • Undefined Explanation
    • "Cook up some crab!" Explanation
    • "You really wanna use it with your ass" Explanation
    • "Just stand in the corner and mash your balls!" Explanation
  • Scrappy Mechanic:
    • The autotiler has had some flak since the tilesets may not be properly adjusted for some layouts.
    • In Wily Challenge, it is likely to obtain levels that may have poor quality or that are no longer solvable. It is also possible for a level to be repeated after being won in the same mode.
  • Scrappy Weapon:
    • The Needle Cannon was reimagined as clinging on its targets while damaging anything punctured by a needle slowly. For fans, this creates a problem in that the change negates its rapid fire properties due to the limit of needles present and it can easily leave the player unable to defend themselves.
    • The Flame Sword has alienated many fans due to its multi-hit system not necessarily being precise for small or distant targets with high HP, which can make it difficult to damage some enemies. Disregarding the original weapon's function to erase projectiles has also ruined the weapon's perception.
    • When Command Selection was announced, some disliked the weapon due to considering it too hard to design levels around it and a heavily impractical weapon.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge: In maps where special weapons are a option players can opt to face them using only the Buster weapons/Roll Swing. Alternatively there is also the old-fashioned No-Damage Run.
  • Spiritual Successor: To the level editor from Mega Man Powered Up. It features most of the same design elements, but removes the limitations of Powered Up's editor, such as adding a wider selection of tiles per stage, no restriction to the number of enemies in a single "room," and allowing customization of the boss rooms (complete with optional boss corridors). It also serves as one to the canceled Mega Man Universe, a game with a similar concept to Mega Man Maker.
  • Spoil at Your Own Risk: The Mega Man Maker team has a strict policy that bans leaking content of upcoming updates.
  • The Woobie: Bubble Man has a design flaw that makes him unable to walk right, which Wily refuses to fix because he finds it funny. If you put Bubble Man in a zone with no water, he'll simply fall to the ground and cry, only occasionally stopping to shoot a single Bubble Lead at Mega Man.
