YMMV / Ice Fantasy

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Love Will Be Restored, the love theme (for both Li Luo and Ka Suo and Ka Suo and Shi).
  • Complete Monster: Fire King Huo Yi is the power-hungry tyrant of the Fire Tribe who seeks dominion over all the Three Kingdoms, no matter how many lives he has to extinguish in the process. Huo Yi opens the series launching devastating attacks upon the Ice Kingdom and burning most of the Ice King's sons alive, ordering the death of anyone who attempts to help the two survivors, Ka Suo and Ying Kong Shi. Huo Yi is responsible for regular bouts of torture, mass murder, and spiteful manipulation, at one point winning over the loyalty of the Dream Kingdom's lord by promising to cure his deathly ill sister, before revealing the cure never existed in the first place and trying to murder them both. At the end of the series, Huo Yi starts devouring the souls of everyone he comes across, his own long-abused children among them, and pledges all who will not submit to him in his new kingdom will have their souls consumed to suffer forever. At the end of his wicked life, Huo Yi murders his last surviving daughter simply to get to Ying Kong Shi, moments after she had tearfully pleaded for Ka Suo to spare her father's life.
  • Fight Scene Failure: The special effects of the fight scenes are often poor. Especially when magic is involved.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With Novoland: The Castle in the Sky, due to both shows having a similar premise and aesthetic.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • As mentioned on the Trivia page, several actors went on to appear in Princess Silver.
    • Three years after this series, Xu Ke (Xing Jiu) and Zhang Yu Jian (Pian Feng) both starred in The Plough Department of Song Dynasty.
    • Yan Yi Kuan plays a Greater-Scope Villain who appears after the main Big Bad has already made trouble for the characters, and who promptly makes everything worse for everyone. Is this a description of Yuan Ji or Qing Cang?
  • Ho Yay: The sequel provides plenty between Ka Suo and Xing Jiu. In episode six Ka Suo even dries Xing Jiu's hair, and they stare at each other the whole time.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • The Fire King crosses it when he tortures then kills the Ice Tribe's princes and princesses in front of their parents.
    • Shuo Gang crosses it when he rapes Lan Shang.
  • Scenery Porn: Mostly the Ice Kingdom and the cherry tree.
  • The Scrappy: Lan Shang gets on many viewers' nerves because of how helpless she is and how she has to constantly be rescued by other characters.
  • Selective Obliviousness: Most everyone is guilty of this from time to time, except for Ying Kong Shi and Yan Da. No wonder those two are the fan favorites.
  • Special Effect Failure:
    • The CGI for the snowy lion is not very convincing.
    • Some of the Ice Tribe are obviously wearing wigs.
    • Shuo Gang's metal arm looks alright from a distance, but in close-ups of his hand it's obviously the actor wearing a metal-coloured glove.
  • Unexpected Character: Several episodes after he is killed, Shi (or at least part of him) returns - as a tiny and adorable sword spirit!
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The CGI is generally at its best depicting the landscapes of the Ice Kingdom and Snow Blade City.
  • The Woobie:
    • Lan Shang, the Princess Mermaid. She only wants someone to care for her, but people go to war over the question of who she's going to be forced to marry. And then Shuo Gang rapes her while pretending to be Ka Suo, and she doesn't realise it at first and thinks she's married to Ka Suo...
    • Xing Jiu and Xing Gui. Their father hid an ice crystal in Xing Gui, and because of it she's always ill. Xing Jiu tries to find a cure for her and ends up working for the King of Fire, who's promised to give them a cure he doesn't have.
    • Iron Woobie: Li Luo goes to enormous lengths to save Ka Suo's life, including loading herself with an unbreakable curse that turns her into a man-eating monster each night.
    • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Shi doesn't have it easy. At all. He was mocked and never respected by family and court all his life and then he finds out his beloved brother isn't his brother at all and instead he's the direct descendant of the most-feared immortal of all time and Last of His Kind; his mother turns crazy and manipulates him into opposing Ka Suo and killing people; and then he gives up his own life to save Ka Suo. Considering he's also one of, if not the most powerful immortal in the world, it makes him this.
