YMMV / HUNT the TRUTH

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Is Sullivan now a die-hard ONI loyalist who is willing to do morally questionable acts, or is that Nice Guy still in there somewhere?
    • From the final episode: Was Petrosky really willing to betray Ben, or was he forced to do it?
    • ONI on the whole. Are they now a totalitarian organization run by douchebags, or are they still an intelligence organization protecting humanity?
    • Is Benjamin simply a journalist attempting to show the public the truth they deserve, or is he a grudge-holder trying to cause a civil war out of spite? Maybe a mixture of the two?
  • Broken Base:
    • The fandom has split into two on the stance on ONI. One side believes that ONI still has good intentions for humanity, while others say that they're just a straight-up villainous organization that stepped right out of Nineteen Eighty-Four. This escalated further with the final episode, with half of the fanbase furiously defending ONI and the other half openly saying that ONI is evil.
    • The fans are also split on whether Season Two is as good as Season One.
  • Epileptic Trees: The scattered pictures, the increasing tension and the anomalies are making people go mad with speculation. And it took off to insane levels once it was thought that the Chief went bananas; even after the mitigating circumstances behind that were explained, the potential reasons for the cover-ups surrounding it have been fuel for speculation.
  • Fan Nickname: With the appearance of Senator Del Rio, fans have nicknamed him "Fucking Del Rio" to show their affection for him.
  • First Installment Wins: Fan enthusiasm seems to have moderately died down during Season Two; for example, every time a new episode of Season One was released, there was already a full fan transcription on Halopedia almost right away, while the transcriptions for Season Two were still incomplete months after it ended, despite having fewer episodes than Season One.
  • He Really Can Act:
    • Viewers of Key & Peele know that Keegan-Michael Key is a very versatile actor, but up until now he had mostly played comedic parts alongside his partner Jordan. This series shows that not only can he do great on his own, but he can mine a lot of drama and likability out of a non-comedic and once-obscure Halo character.
    • Troy Baker, despite being a supporting character, gives a very dedicated and emotional performance as Petrosky in Episode 7, an ODST who witnessed young Master Chief kill three of his squadmates in a fistfight and now is homeless and treated like dirt by ONI.
    • At the very end of Episode 13, Cobie Smulders delivers an emotionally charged and vengeance-filled monologue, talking about how she's going to avenge Ben, all in a calm, clear, tone.
    • Jerry Trainor is known for comedic roles, but he does do a good job as Sullivan, notably in Season 2, where he's more of a main character.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In one of Key and Peele's "Obama's Anger Translator" skits, Luthor (played by Keegan) brags about playing Halo 4 all day if Obama doesn't get re-elected. Now, of course, he's a part of the Halo universe.
  • I Knew It!: After Sully notes that Maya's gun never registered as having been fired when she was sent to kill Mshak Moradi, many fans theorized that he was still alive, but black-bagged somewhere. They were right.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Glassed planets have bad records". This is jokingly used to either excuse any continuity error ever or as Blatant Lies to cover something up. As such, the refrain will always be "Do glassed people have bad records?!" Always.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • A post on the HUNT the TRUTH Tumblr showed what seemed to be a textless version of the Halo 2 cover art. Then another picture showed that it was a heavily-edited photo taken by Benjamin Giraud in-universe during the game's events. The real picture looks very grim, with waves of Covenant ships and the smoking body of a dead marine nearby.
    • In-universe, Giraud's weekly audio recordings are this, especially after he decides to upload them to the Internet.
    • An in-universe and meta example for Episode 8: Chief attacks a peace conference and kidnaps the head human diplomat for seemingly no reason, starting a firefight that ends with nineteen humans dead, with the diplomat's corpse found later.
  • Tear Jerker: The final episode of Season 1 and opening episode of Season 2. Everything Ben has done, all the people he helped, all the sacrifices he made, are rendered meaningless when ONI arrests him for treason. As he is being arrested, he can only scream about how he wanted to help the Master Chief, his hero. Then when it seems Petra is more than happy to take up Ben's cause and fight ONI with everything she's got, she gets caught by ONI too.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Benjamin Giraud actually is a returning character from the Halo canon. He first appeared, unnamed, in The Halo Graphic Novel, as a photographer who's in New Mombasa when the Covenant attacked. The comic ends with him giving up his place on a lifeboat for another survivor, making it seem as though he died in the city. With no followup to the story since 2006, most fans expected he was dead, and never thought once thought he'd come back being played by the comedy star Keegan-Michael Key.
    • While many correctly guessed the young boy in the "Starry Night" trailer was John, there was only speculation on who the girl was and once again, nobody expected the commercial to be referenced again. It came as a shock to many that not only was it made canon, but the girl in it received a name, Ellie Bloom, lived to adulthood, and has been a recurring character.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: Very much so. Part of the series's popularity is how ONI mirrors the CIA/governments today, and people have compared Ben to Edward Snowden.
  • The Woobie: Ben himself as the series goes on. Especially considering the end. It's hard not to want to give the poor guy a hug after it all. The good news is that he's alive. The bad news is that he's now an Un-person being detained at an ONI facility and has begun self-harming to cope with the isolation.
