Fairy Idol is the fourth Made-for-TV Movie of The Fairly OddParents!, and the Series Fauxnale until it was renewed for a sixth season.

Norm the Genie sets up an elaborate plan to upgrade from genie to fairy - by becoming Chester McBadbat's genie, Chester wishes to spend more time with Timmy. Norm then uses a selfish, unappreciative clone of Timmy to trick Cosmo and Wanda into quitting being his godparents. Because his godparents quit, Jorgen Von Strangle comes to erase Timmy's memory, but unbeknownst to him, he erases the memory of the clone. Using a portal to Fairy World Crocker recently constructed, Timmy ventures into Fairy World, where he discovers that because Cosmo and Wanda quit, a singing competition is being held to determine who will replace them.

Fairy Idol contains examples of:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Norm's wishes granted to Chester turn the Sahara Desert into a gigantic mudpit, the polar icecaps to melt, and AJ and the bald scientists to gain hair.
  • Asian Buck Teeth: The fairy version of William Hung is depicted with large, chipped teeth that jut out from his upper mandible.
  • Big Bad: Norm is the central antagonist for the special, as the conflict is driven by his scheme of making Cosmo and Wanda quit being Timmy's godparents to create an opening for a new godparent and participating in the Fairy Idol singing competition so that he can win and, in doing so, become a fairy godparent and free of his lamp forever.
  • Big "NO!": Timmy screams this, coupled with Eat the Camera, when he retains his memory but Cosmo and Wanda are now gone.
  • Call-Back: The concept of "Magical Buildup", introduced in "The Same Game" all the way back in Season 1, comes back in this special, first by Timmy intentionally invoking it to punish Norm into giving him what he wants, and later as a gag at the end when Cosmo and Wanda figure out the ramifications of Timmy giving them too long a break by not asking for any wishes.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Timmy's clone turns out to be useful. When Jorgen arrives to erase Timmy's memory after Cosmo and Wanda quit, he wipes the memory of the clone instead, allowing Timmy to still remember them.
  • Chirping Crickets: One bad performance on Fairy Idol is actually reacted to by the fairies in the audience turning into crickets.
  • Contrived Coincidence: The instant Timmy wonders how to get to Fairy World, he finds Mr. Crocker finished constructing a portal to Fairy World which he uses.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Cosmo and Wanda are only good in duets, and only one of them can go out; luckily, Cosmo practiced singing like Diana Degarmo for contests like this.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: One of the contestants of Fairy Idol, who is based off American Idol contestant William Hung, is singing a variant of the show's theme song in the vein of Hung's infamously bad rendition of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs".
  • Didn't Think This Through: While it was nice of Timmy to give his fairies the day off at the end of the special, it didn't occur to him to wish for them to have the day off, forgetting fairies cannot go to long without magic.
  • Disqualification-Induced Victory: Turns out Norm knew Cosmo and Wanda would win Fairy Idol, so he plotted a failsafe by setting off a booby trap and trapping them in a butterfly net, rendering them useless against it and getting hit. This leaves Norm, who is in second, to win by default.
  • Evil Knockoff: Norm creates a clone of Timmy under the pretense that the clone can spend time with Cosmo and Wanda while the real one can have the day to himself. This turns out to be step #1 of Norm's Evil Plan, which involves making the clone act like a complete jerkass to Cosmo and Wanda until they can't take it anymore and quit their jobs. Becomes a Chekhov's Gunman upon the fairies quitting however, as once Jorgen comes to wipe Timmy's memory, he wipes the memories of the clone instead.
  • Extra-Long Episode: The fourth in the series. This one runs at about 50 minutes rather than the standard 11.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: When Jorgen is coming and Timmy flees to the closet with the clone following, he takes off his hat and throws it on the floor before hiding; the clone keeps his hat on, which allows the viewer to discern who's who when Jorgen tries to wipe his mind.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Two in succession. When Cosmo and Wanda find out Norm only tricked them to steal their jobs, Jorgen turns him back into a genie; and when Chester finds out the truth, he wishes for everything to go back to the way it was before he found Norm's lamp.
  • Madness Makeover: A minor one. When Timmy's mind is erased for real after Norm quits, he becomes slightly deranged with matted hair.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: One of the auditionees is a fairy version of American Idol contestant William Hung.
  • Oh, Crap!: There are many instances of a character freaking out upon realizing they're in big trouble.
    • Timmy when he finds out Cosmo and Wanda quit and Jorgen is coming to wipe his memory.
    • Timmy again after Cosmo and Wanda leave upon retaining his memory.
    • Cosmo and Wanda when Norm traps them in a butterfly net and they cannot prevent themselves against a booby trap.
    • Timmy, Cosmo and Wanda in unison when Norm accidentally spills he tricked them into quitting.
    • Timmy a third time when Jorgen wipes his mind for real.
    • Norm when Jorgen revokes him back to a genie after he quits.
    • Norm again when Chester bursts out of the closet, having heard everything.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: To sneak past Jorgen without letting him know he didn't wipe his memory, Timmy disguises himself as Mr. Crocker. Even though Timmy is much shorter due to being a child and does nothing about his distinctive overbite, it fools Jorgen and the stagehand, and also Cosmo and Wanda briefly.
  • Plot Hole: Done in-universe with Cosmo and Wanda when they are surprised Timmy still knows them even though Jorgen wiped his memory; Timmy informs them this is because Jorgen wiped the memory of a clone.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: After Norm quits and is reassigned back to a genie, he is still nevertheless glad he got his revenge; however, Chester, who was in the closet, hears everything. Enraged at how he had been manipulated by Norm to further his agenda, Chester uses his remaining wish to undo all the damage Norm had caused and send him back into the lamp.
  • Reset Button: Chester pushes it in the end when he learns the truth about Norm, wishing for everything to be back to the way it was before finding his magic lava lamp: All of Norm's wishes are undone, Timmy's memory is restored, Cosmo and Wanda are back to being his godparents, and Norm is returned to his lamp again.
  • Rich Boredom: Chester enjoys the rich life at first, but soon grows tired of it. To add insult to the injury, they lose everything and his dad gets in trouble with the law.
  • Running Gag: Cosmo being bribed into accepting apologies with a cookie.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Cosmo and Wanda get annoyed by the Timmy clone to the point they call it quits and move out.
  • Singing Voice Dissonance: Cosmo sings in a female voice courtesy of Diana Degarmo.
  • Twin Switch: Timmy manages to swap himself with the clone Norman made so Jorgen erases his memory in his place.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Chester becomes one to Norm throughout the episode.
  • Villain Song: Norm the Genie sings most of "Gimmie the Wand", where his parts consist of expressing his desire to win Fairy Idol so he can become a fairy godparent and therefore be free of his lava lamp prison for good.
  • Wrong Song Gag: When Jorgen Von Strangle is preparing to take away everything Timmy has ever wished for due to his fairy god parents quitting their job, he tells Binky play more ominous music on a boombox, track seven specifically. Binky plays "Pop Goes the Weasel" instead, prompting Jorgen to yell "I SAID TRACK SEVEN!" This gag is repeated near the end of the special when Jorgen is about to once again take away Timmy's wishes and fairy god parent memories due to his new fairy god parent, Norm the "Genie", quitting before setting everything back to normal. A different but also silly piece of music plays before Jorgen makes his entrance, causing him to once again demand that Binky play track seven.
  • You Can't Thwart Stage One: Timmy is too late at stopping Norm's plans at getting Cosmo and Wanda to quit; however, he was able to swap himself for the clone so Jorgen wipes its memory in place of his own.
