Sonic Legacy (Not to Be Confused with the webcomic of the same name), also under the name RodentRap, is a mod for Friday Night Funkin' which crosses over with Sonic the Hedgehog. The premise is just as simple as it sounds. You get to take on Sonic and his pals through groovy rap-battles with Boyfriend, which all seems well and good. At least, until things start going downhill...

The mod itself, in its real state, is an official reimagining of Vs Sonic.exe as its own thing, led by TembiteNG and JoeDoughBoi, the latter being the Sonic.exe creepypasta's owner, and supported by numerous ex-members of the original mod's team.

Song List

Tropes:

  • Adapted Out: Girlfriend's only appearance in the mod so far is a cameo as a crude drawing in the gallery. She is nowhere to be seen in the flesh.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Amongst the corpses in the final section of "Obituary", the eagle-eyed may notice that Tails's corpse is nowhere to be found. It's currently unknown whether the corpse is off-screen somewhere, or if Tails survived/respawned and could have a bigger role in future updates.
  • The Cameo: Aside from the image of Alan, the other pictures on the Shady Guy's wall are of YouTubers Markiplier, Luigikid, IShowSpeed and dlive22891.
  • Developer's Foresight: The mod's developers have really gone above and beyond to ensure nobody immediately figures out the mod's true nature, to the point that EVERY file related to Sonic.exe cannot be seen by looking in the mod's folders.
  • Easter Egg:
    • Staying idle in the Shady Guy's space for a bit nets different dialogue out of him, some of which is fittingly memetic.
    • Likewise, remaining idle on the mod's true menu has the Discord call sound start playing on occasion, even if you're not running the app and/or have that sound switched off in the app's settings.
  • Evolving Title Screen: After beating the main week, the mod reveals its true name and changes both the title screen AND menu entirely from the typical FNF style. Namely, the menu is now a point-and-click PC-like interface where you can access any of the beaten songs, browse a shady cultist's wares, tweak some settings and view the credits.
  • Foreshadowing: Numerous hints strewn here and there are shown to hint to who you're really taking on before the big reveal.
    • In the fake title screen, the style of the logo has the "T" capitalised, making the name sound like RodenTrap.
    • A more subtle one closer to the true reveal is in Sonic's lyrics in "Free-4-Me / Obituary", where in the first lyric he sings he describes the need for Boyfriend to run, specifically with him. He also mentions "or be afraid" at one point, reflecting how Sonic.exe instigates fear in his victims.
  • Interface Spoiler: Subverted with the timer in "Obituary", which starts off solely counting the time for the "Free-4-Me" section of the song. Once X reveals himself, however, the timer updates to cover the rest of the song whilst the rest of the HUD is altered to match the mod's true nature.
  • Killed Offscreen: Boyfriend suffers this fate at X's hands should he lose "Obituary" after The Reveal, his Game Over sequence instead showing it happening OUTSIDE his body as it tenses up.
  • No Fair Cheating: If playing the main week with Botplay active, the game will only go as far as where The Reveal is meant to happen, which concludes with "Sonic" offering to give things another shot when you feel more up to it before returning you to the week selection menu.
  • Sound Test: In the cultist / shady guy's room, this can be accessed via his tape player, which lets you listen to any of the music currently available in this mod.
"Oh, you're a music man are ya? I'm something of a connoisseur of the arts myself. Here are some tunes I was able to record... Don't ask how I got 'em."
  • Suddenly Voiced: Throughout the regular section of "Free-4-Me", Sonic gets actual voice-acting AND singing to go along with the song.
  • Take That!: When looking in the Shady Guy's book about X, he mentions that JC (Sonic.exe's original owner) has a bit of a taste in fashion amongst other things, though, for your sake, asks you not to look that up. It's confirmed through a video of the mod Joe himself made that it's a deep cut to JC's old writing for the creepypasta, even if it's not canon in the slightest to Sonic Legacy.
  • Wham Line: One is said by who appears to be Sonic where "Free-4-Me" is meant to end, before he reveals who he really is. Cue the song's TRUE state, "Obituary", being unveiled, alongside your true opponent for the main week.
    "Just got one question..."
(cue the Red Eyes, Take Warning)
"DO YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH ME?"
