Video Game / Illegal Instruction

Go To

Illegal Instruction is a Game Mod of Friday Night Funkin' directed by averyavary. The mod was aimed to showcase fan made Sonic.exe characters, with a focus on Duke, an EXE of Knuckles the Echidna, as the primary antagonist of the mod.

The mod was initially cancelled due to multiple important members of the dev team, including averyavary and Kenji, being exposed for remaining in contact with JesterFrog, who was exposed for grooming a 14 year old girl and collecting CP of her, leading to a mass exodus of the team and those still in contact with JesterFrog giving their characters to other people and being ousted from both communities. The mod would end up being Uncancelled in early 2023, with massive changes and a lot of character removals... only to get permanently cancelled following another misdemeanour, this time with averyavary being exposed for grooming multiple underage girls, resulting in Avery taking a break for several months before returning to Tumblr. An unfinished leaked build was made available by an anonymous developer and can be downloaded here.

However, an official revival licensed by the team known as ILLEGAL INSTRUCTION: Retake was in the works, and a demo was eventually released, with V1 currently in the works. It can be downloaded here.

Illegal Instruction features instances of:

  • Adaptational Diversity: Amy’s skin is noticeably darker and she’s seemingly gained a few pounds.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Amy’s upgrades to Metal Sonic also resulted in changes in the color to his, well, metal. His blues are much darker, his arms and shoes are black, and he lacks a turbine in his stomach, which is replaced with a silver chest-plate.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: During "Found You", Amy, as mentioned above, has a different appearance, but has also been confirmed to have the same sort of personality as Tails, having upgraded Metal Sonic to stand a chance against NormalCD in the absence of Sonic and Robotnik.
  • Amazing Technicolor Battlefield: The background of “Malediction” becomes this, changing from a forest to a sea of purple and black static once Curse uses his powers.
  • And I Must Scream: Simply put, Wechnia isn't coping with his situation as a glitch entity well.
  • Animation Bump: The trailer for the revival reveals that Chaotix’s song(s) will no longer be pixelated, but rather drawn in the normal Friday Night Funkin' style.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different:
    • During “Found You”, you play as Metal Sonic and Amy rather than Boyfriend.
    • "Color Crash" has you play as Mighty instead of Boyfriend.
    • Before the mod got well and truly cancelled, "Chimera Redux" would've had Kevin (one of Duke's victims in a Sonic vessel) playable.
  • Art Shift:
    • During “Soulless Endeavors”, Duke sends Boyfriend to a special stage, changing to the style of Knuckles Chaotix.
    • Speaking of Knuckles’ Chaotix, both “My Horizon” and “Our Horizon” are in the pixel art style of said 32X game, with “Our Horizon” occasionally shifting back to the traditional Friday Night Funkin' style. The trailer for the revival however shows that ”Vista” will not be receiving the same treatment.
  • The Cameo:
    • During "My Horizon", "Vista" and "Our Horizon", the actual Knuckles' Chaotix cast, alongside Amy Rose, are shown in the background, grooving along to the song. They quickly show fear to Chaotix's true form during the former song, along with being promptly deleted in the homestretch of Vista, though not so during "Our Horizon", due to Chaotix not being as evil in that song.
    • Just on a screen just out of frame behind Amy and Metal in “Found You”, Curse can be seen.
    • In “Manual Blast”, a monitor in the background shows an assortment of other EXEs, those being Needlem0use, No More Innocence, Starved, and Fatal Error.
  • Carbuncle Creature: Metal Sonic has the yellow Time Stone embedded in his forehead.
  • Cover Version:
    • The version of “Endless” included is an entirely new version of the song, known as the Forest Mix.
    • A version of “Perdition”, a song meant for Satanos, was going to have a cover featuring Apollyon, another EXE with a similar concept to Satanos.
  • Dual Boss: Inverted, as you play as Metal Sonic and Amy in "Found You" against NormalCD.
  • Expy:
    • Duke is this to Xenophanes, both in terms of character and structure to his songs. Invoked as Avery has started that Duke’s story is meant to be a retelling of the original Sonic.exe
    • Hog (and Scorched) and Chaotix are expies for EXE.
  • Glitch Entity: Ashura and Wechnia, as per usual with their original games.
  • Joke Character: Chotix, as he was based off of a joke drawing depicting various EXEs, most of which being from the cast of Vs Sonic.exe at the time, and his song is filled with memes.
  • Life Drain: A bit of an unconventional example with Chaotix in "My Horizon" / "Vista", where Boyfriend’s maximum health constantly glitches out throughout the second part of the song.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • In “Final Frontier”, Mighty would’ve shared a color palette with Sonic, which is a reference to how Mighty is a reskin of Sonic when Sonic Crackers became Knuckles’ Chaotix.
    • Chaotix’s story is heavily based on the Wechnia glitch, from him being broken data searching to become whole with Tails, referencing how the Wechnia is the leftover data from when Sonic Crackers became Knuckles’ Chaotix, to his true form’s color palette being the same as the Wechnia.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: If the unused art assets and freeplay art are anything to go by, Boyfriend would’ve been terrified by Duke and Girlfriend would need to use a lot of her power in order to keep up with him.
  • Promoted to Playable:
    • Based on the freeplay menu art and health icons in the files, Girlfriend would have been playable in “Final Frontier”.
    • The Parallax collab song would’ve had you play as Chaotix.
    • In an unused song, “Good For Them”, Curse would have been the playable character singing against NormalCD.
  • Reference Overdosed: Once Scorched starts glitching out during “Manual Blast”, his face changes to different EXEs, those being Grimeware, Xenophanes, RE-RUN, X-Terion, Griatos, EYX, Cyclops, Sally_ALT, Mighty.zip, and Lord X.
  • Token Good Teammate: Curse and Hog fall into this category, possibly Chaotix as well, but that’s to be determined.
  • Scarf of Asskicking:
    • Pre-reboot, Amy and Metal are equipped with scarfs, with the latter of which doing said asskicking.
    • In the reboot, Kevin (Duke!Sonic) wears one that's akin to the banner seen in Sonic title screens, proving how ready he is to fight back against his tormentor.
  • Slasher Smile: NormalCD and Chaotix’s true form’s faces are perpetually this.
  • Speed Echoes: When hitting two or more notes at the same time, an after image appears. This is most noticeable in “Found You” and “Long Sky”, where multiple double, triple, and quadruple hold notes appear, making the effect easier to notice.
