Trivia / Space Patrol Luluco

Go To

Due to the sheer volume of spoilers, all of them are unmarked in this page. You Have Been Warned!

  • Actor Allusion: Luluco’s mother is a Space Pirate? It must be in her blood.
  • All There in the Manual: The drama CD included with the special edition of the Blu-Ray reveals a lot of previously unknown information on the cast:
    • Lalaco was initially the normal one of the couple, with Keiji being the crazy one. He mellowed out considerably after Luluco was born. This caused a conflict of interest between them, as Lalaco didn't want her daughter to be stuck with an uneventful life like her whereas Keiji didn't want her to turn out insane like he did. She left and became a space pirate, hoping to rekindle the spark of insanity from within Keiji.
      • Lalaco also wasn't born a redhead, she became that way after going to hell and coming back to life.
    • The secretary graduated from both Ogikubo University and the University of Massachusetts.
    • Luluco does horribly on tests and Midori apparently scored higher than her on midterms. Note that Midori herself doesn't study and she says she's "below average".
    • Midori is descended from royalty. Her mother fled the kingdom, married a human, and settled down on Earth.
    • Her mother's side of the family are extreme Eco-Terrorists who deploy measures to anyone who so much as takes their planet's soil.
    • The Blackeholeian never confessed to his crush, the Whiteholeian, and so turned to a life of thievery to cope with the regret.
    • The Flutter Jewels grow from people with young crushes, as the Blackholeian and Whiteholeian have been growing theirs since middle school.
  • Development Hell: Apparently, the concept for Luluco went as far back as 2011, and Imaishi had been trying to get it off the ground for a long time... The reason? It's the origin story for Studio Trigger's mascot character, Trigger-chan!
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The gag manga was only released via Crunchyroll, where the 3rd chapter was locked behind the premium service. After the discontinuation of their manga service, there has been no reuploads or scans of the 3rd chapter. To this day, it's unknown if it was translated at all.
  • Marth Debuted in "Smash Bros.":
    • The main cast of Sex and Violence with Machspeed make their first mainstream international appearance in episode 9, previously debuting in the Japan Animator Expo.
    • The show is an odd one for Luluco, who happens to be Studio Trigger mascot Trigger-chan, a relatively obscure figure outside of Japan. Had it been completed back in 2011, the show would have been her introduction.
  • Milestone Celebration: The series is made in honor of Studio TRIGGER's 5th Anniversary and it contains numerous callbacks and references to their past output, on top of it being an origin story for their very own mascot, Trigger-chan.
  • The Other Darrin:
  • Staff-Created Fan Work: In early 2017, director Hiroyuki Imaishi and several other staff members created a doujin that acts as both a unofficial sequel to not only Space Patrol Luluco, but Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt as well. Despite it being made by the staff behind both, it is not regarded to be canon to either show.
  • Word of God: Thanks to the AX 2016 panel, there are some tidbits of info that were learnt about the series:
    • Luluco's Trigger-chan form is 17 years old, and it serves as her Older Alter Ego. She's still around 13 by the end of the series.
      • Imaishi was initially reluctant to the idea of Luluco becoming Trigger-chan, but warmed up to it after realizing it could get the show made.
    • The flames surrounding Over Justice are intentionally supposed to resemble a marijuana leaf.
    • Luluco and Nova will indeed meet up again in another one of Trigger's works, and their very brief cameo in Kiznaiver was not that meeting.note  According to the art book, this meeting will come four years after the anime's end.
  • Word of St. Paul: According to Tetsu Inada, Over Justice's seiyuu, after the series he went to wander the universe and eventually became corrupted by something turning into Alexis Kerib, Gridman's Fixer Beam would undo the corruption and he began thinking about justice once again, leading him to become Gridman Justice.
  • What Could Have Been: Different sources, including the AX Panel and the art book for the series reveal many different things:
    • According to Imaishi, the series initially comprised of 52 episodes, however due to budget and production constraints, it was cut down to 13.
      • The series being divided into four miniature "seasons" of three episodes each is likely a vestigial remnant of what the basic outline of the show was meant to encompass.
    • In early drafts, Lalaco was written as the lead Big Bad and would've been a consistent threat throughout the series. The staff at Trigger found this "boring" and her role was considerably altered when the show got cut down to a single season.
    • There were multiple evil versions of Nova: One seems to have harpy-like legs and planetary rings around his waist, and another was supposed to be a Smug Snake subordinate of Lalaco at one point. The scar on his forehead would have been revealed following his Face–Heel Turn rather than when he gains emotions in the final product.
    • Midori resembled a regular human girl in some drafts and was named "Yuka".
    • Lalaco was completely nude under her cloak, but was given a bikini after a staff member kept making dirty jokes about her.
    • In the case of the English Dub, Funimation ADR Director Christopher Bevins said that he wanted Rachelle Heger to reprise her role as Sucy for the cameo, but stated that for such a small amount of lines, it would have cost too much for her to fly out to Texas or for them to have her record from California.
