• Actor Allusion: Lots.
  • Betty White's cellmate in the second season premiere is Mary Tyler Moore.
  • The mother of Melanie's boyfriend is Bonnie Franklin.
  • Peri Gilpin plays a friend of all three of the gals and John Mahoney (also from Frasier) plays a love interest of Elka.
  • Elka loves animals, as Betty White does.
  • The episode title "I'm With the Band" is likely a reference to the Disney XD show I'm in the Band; both feature Steve Valentine playing a rock star.
  • In one episode, when Joy pretends to be American, she says "sure" in the same way Daphne Moon did while she was pretending to be American.
    • Joy to Elka : "Were you on TV in The '80s?"
    • That episode takes it further- in-universe during a flashback, Joy turns on a TV and sees Elka on TV- though it's not identified, it's actually footage of Betty White appearing on the CBS Game Show Body Language (albeit trimmed and with her nametag digitally altered, to make it seem Elka was a contestant, as opposed to White being a celebrity partner).
