Trivia / Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget

Go To

  • Channel Hop: While the original film was released by DreamWorks everywhere outside of Europe, this film was distributed by Netflix since Aardman and Dreamworks have long since separated. This film was originally set up at StudioCanal and original European distributor Pathé before Netflix acquired the rights.
  • Creator Backlash: Ginger’s original voice actress, Julia Sawalha, was very critical of the decision to recast her, calling the decision ageist.
  • Creator Cameo: Director Sam Fell voices the moth that flies into the electric fence and the little boy in the Fun-Land Farms ad.
  • Dueling Works: With Wonka. Both are British comedy films released in the holiday season of 2023 centering around underdog heroes going up against corrupt food businesspeople. However, Wonka is a live action musical centered around chocolate and was released in theaters, whereas Chicken Run is a claymation spy caper centered around chickens and chicken nuggets and was released on a streaming platform.
  • Meaningful Release Date: The first plot summary of the film was released on June 23, 2020 — the 20th anniversary of the original Chicken Run's release.
  • The Other Darrin: A number of the original cast of the film have been recast:
  • Role Reprise: Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton, Lynn Ferguson and Miranda Richardson reprise their respective roles as Babs, Bunty, Mac and Mrs. Tweedy for the first time since 2000.
    • In the Swedish dub, Sharon Dyall is the only voice actor who reprises her role as Gingy while everyone else went from having Celebrity Voice Actors to more professional Swedish voice actors.
  • Saved from Development Hell: A sequel has been planned by Aardman as far back as the original film's development, with there originally being plans to include a Sequel Hook in the original film showing a second chicken run being built, which ended up being cut late in production due to Aardman not being sure at the time if a sequel would be made. It wouldn't be until 2018, 18 years after the film's release, that the sequel would finally happen and be formally announced by Netflix, with it being released in 2023.
  • Sequel Gap: 23 years have passed between this film and the original.
  • Shrug of God: When asked what happened to Mr. Tweedy, director Sam Fell said Mrs. Tweedy "put an end to their marriage", leaving it ambiguous whether she divorced or killed him.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Originally, the sequel was going to have a new villain due to the film's change of genre from a Prison Escape spoof to a spy/heist spoof before it was decided that reusing Mrs. Tweedy made the conflict of the film — Ginger's relationship with her daughter and her fear of going back to the outside world thanks to the aforementioned woman — much stronger.
    • The initial plan for Ginger and Rocky's child was to repurpose the unused character of Nobby from the first film, making him Ginger's son instead of her little brother. The animators went so far as to create a model of the character before it was decided that the mother/daughter conflict would be a stronger storyline.
