Sailor Moon codified many of the tropes for the Magical Girl genre, including the trend of subtext that magical girls are lesbians or bisexual. Fitting, considering many well-known sailor stereotypes.

     All Continuities
  • Mamoru and Usagi are the main Official Couple of the series.
  • Haruka/Michiru:
    • They're an Official Couple, and clearly regard each other as important and are in a comfortable relationship together, as there are many flirtatious or suggestive lines shared between them in all continuities. In Crystal, they get a romantic ending song together. They eventually act as parental figures toward Hotaru a little while after she comes into the Senshi's lives. They're the ones who were turned into "cousins," in the original '90s English dub, to...varied success.
  • Haruka is seen flirting or teasing with at least one of the main girls aside from Michiru in every continuity, with Makoto and Usagi getting their once-per-episode crushes as soon as they catch sight.
    • There's also two episodes with potential Haruka/Ami pairing.
  • Rei/Minako:
    • In the manga, Yaten demands to know if they have become distracted by boys from protecting their princess and lost their way. They then tell her and the rest of the Starlights, "We don't need boys to get along. Is that bad?", all while leaning closely on each other.
    • Also in the manga, the Battle Exam specials. They all deal with romantic relationships, with Ami having hers, Makoto having hers... And Minako and Rei sharing one, whose cover is the current page image.
    • In an episode of R Chibiusa causes the inside of a restaurant to go into zero-gravity. All the girls are inside and start floating. Rei's head floats right up Minako's skirt. From the English dub:
Rei: What a totally weird feeling.
    Minako: Uh, do you MIND!
  • Makoto/Ami:
    • Makoto/Ami seems to be a popular pairing, mainly from the anime. Most of that comes from an episode in Super S where they are at a college dance party and none of the men want to dance with Makoto because she's "too tall" for them. Well, except for Tigers-Eye but he's just using her for his villainous plot. Ami on the other hand, was the only person who genuinely wanted to dance with Makoto and doesn't seem to think that she's too tall.
    • Also, in an early episode, Makoto blushed when she accidentally looked up Ami's skirt.
    • Even Mako's first episode in the original anime dropped some Makoto/Ami hints at least on Ami's part. After introducing herself to the group Makoto goes over and starts petting Luna who is in Ami's arms. The camera then focuses on Ami who, for about two or three seconds, is noticeably blushing as she stares at Makoto's smiling face before the plot rudely interrupts the moment. Make of that what you will.
  • Both Rei/Minako and Makoto/Ami fans would Squee in their final appearances as bride maids in the Stars manga at Usagi and Mamoru's wedding. Both pairings are close to each other as if they were getting married themselves (Rei holding Minako's arm, Ami and Makoto holding hands).
  • Usagi/Naru:
    • At the start of the series, they are best friends and very close. Usagi admires Naru, thinks of her of her as the ideal teenage girl and vows to protect her from harm no matter what. Unfortunately, Naru is forced aside when Usagi's teammates show up, but Naru seems to understand.
    • In Act 5 of the manga and Crystal, after finding out what Naru looks like in a wedding dress, Usagi says she thinks Naru is beautiful and immediately dreams of being a bride.
    • In the original anime, Naru got more screentime to make her status as Usagi's best friend more than just Social Circle Filler, but it got to the point where they were so close and affectionate that at times they acted more like girlfriends. They also tended to treat Umino as the real third wheel in their relationship, even though both girls have been love interests to him. In episode 7, after Usagi and Naru clash over their song and dance routine, what follows resembles a lover's spat and a temporary breakup.

Sailor Moon Anime (Original and Dubbed Versions)
  • Usagi and Rei get a lot of ship-teasing in the anime, with Usagi having moments like being clingy toward Rei and Rei stressing over her in Tsundere ways. Of note, their dynamic is quite different in this iteration versus others, focusing more on rivalry, particularly over love. Their dynamic in this iteration was popular enough that many expressed a wish that they'd become the Official Couple, including a director of the series.
    • In the new Viz Media dub of the original '90s anime, when Usagi sees Rei for the first time, she says something very, very Double Entendre and flirty about her toward her friends, likely intentionally giving them some adaptational "text," so to speak.
  • There's one scene in the anime where Usagi day dreamed that she was kissing Motoki and comes back to reality...only to realize that she was just about to kiss Makoto. Meeeep.
  • Usagi had a dream where Ami leaving (for Germany) was shown right alongside Mamoru leaving her (having broken up with her in the previous episode), complete with falling Cherry Blossoms. Of course, Usagi's always had a bit of the drama queen about her, but still.
  • Kunzite and Zoisite are an official couple exclusive to the anime.

     Sailor Moon Crystal
  • In Act 5, when Usagi and Naru discuss being brides, their friend Yumiko joins in the fun, and she and Usagi share an Imagine Spot of the two of them standing side by side in wedding dresses surrounded by red roses with no grooms in sight.
