Go To

The contestants are pitted against each other in a musical biopic challenge.

Tropes:

  • Air Guitar: Harold promptly gets to playing air guitar when Chris announces that they're doing a rock 'n roll biopic.
  • Big "NO!": Lindsay does one when Chris says that they won't be able to use a phone if they get electrocuted severely if hitting the wrong notes on the guitars.
  • The Bus Came Back: Owen is brought back by Chris because he needs the $50,000 from Chris to pay off his family debt.
  • By "No", I Mean "Yes": Worried about her inexperience with the guitar during a guitar play-along challenge, Lindsay wants to know if it's anything like the recorder because she knows how to play that. Chris answers that it indeed is a lot like the recorder, except that it's completely different.
  • Dreadful Musician: Lindsay is a terrible singer.
Duncan: Three hours at the movie with that girl last night, and now this? I'm gonna go stick a fork in my eye to relieve the pain.
  • Drum Roll: Done by Chef at the start of the episode when Chris is announcing the challenge and what it entails.
  • Electric Torture: If the contestants get any of the notes wrong in the first part of the challenge, they get electrocuted.
  • Flipping the Bird: A challenge is to walk the red carpet and interact with the cardboard cutouts of paparazzi, groupies, and bouncers as a rockstar would. With his usual lack of decorum, Duncan disrespects or attacks nearly every cutout. One cardboard of a fan wanting an autograph gets the finger.
  • Groin Attack: Duncan gloats about winning the first challenge, so Courtney does this to him with a guitar.
  • Hidden Depths: Courtney and Harold's guitar-playing skills.
  • Impact Silhouette: A challenge is to thrash a hotel room set. Courtney goes in hard, her first act of destruction being slamming through the wall into the hotel room set and leaving her own silhouette behind.
  • Irony: Courtney does a phenomenal job playing the guitar, but she loses the first challenge to Duncan (who missed numerous notes and looked bored). According to Chris, she tried too hard, while Duncan embodied the rocker persona of not trying at all.
  • Lack of Empathy: Duncan is the only who is not shocked at Lindsay voting herself off. He laughs as if it was no big deal.
  • The Mole: Chris brought Owen back to deliberately stir up drama among the remaining contestants. Owen feels guilty about it, but his family needs the money that Chris is offering.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Owen explains why he's working for Chris during a confessional. He notes that he's to stir up trouble, but that he doesn't really want to do it because Lindsay, Beth, Duncan, and Harold are his friends. After a second, he adds, "Oh, and Courtney's okay... I guess."
  • Now That's Using Your Teeth!: In imitation of Jimi Hendrix, Courtney plays with her teeth for a bit during the guitar play-along challenge.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the film Rock and Rule.
  • Rockers Smash Guitars: During the guitar play-along challenge, Duncan puts in minimal effort and hits only a small percentage of notes. After that disinterested performance, he smashes his guitar in two on a stage box. For all of his apathy, he wins the round.
  • Sarcasm Failure: Courtney is annoyed her swag bag is just Chris' autobiography and quips they should've added a barf bag with Chris' face on it. A producer then tosses her a bag with Chris' face on it full of vomit.
  • Sarcasm Mode: Duncan's reaction to Chris pointing out he broke the guitar.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Chris talks about how most rock stars have an untimely death while sitting on the toilet.
    • Chris calls Chef "Ringo".
    • The first part of the challenge is a reference to Guitar Hero.
    • During the guitar playing challenge, Owen is seen wearing the school boy uniform of Australian hard rock band ''AC/DC's lead guitarist, Angus Young. Harold also two of their songs, "Thunderstruck" and "For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)".
    • Harold's guitar catches fire, while Courtney plays behind her head and with her teeth, all stunts done by Jimi Hendrix.
    • Courtney plays the guitar in a "windmill" motion like Pete Townshend.
    • The idea of stereotypical rock stars trashing their hotel rooms comes from the movie based on the Pink Floyd album "The Wall" and its movie adaptation.
