Recap / Total Drama: "Crouching Courtney, Hidden Owen"

Go To

Four out of five of the final five are pitted against each other in a boys versus girls kung fu movie challenge, with Owen set against them.

Tropes:

  • Blatant Lies: Owen has two examples in this episode:
    • When coming up with a reason as to why he can't be compete in the challenge, Chris says he went skateboarding (though he later says he went out to get a burger, which is also a lie).
    • When asked as to how he's climbing up the cliff so quickly, he says its because of his Geisha shoes, when really he's being controlled by Chris via a crane on top of the cliff.
  • Dartboard of Hate: To motivate Harold into punching the right way, Duncan sets up a punching bag that not only has a crude drawing of himself on it, but which he also stands behind to measure the blows. Harold starts out giving it barely any genuine effort, so Duncan takes it up a notch by agitating him. Nothing works until Duncan lies that he kissed Leshawna. Upon hearing that, Harold punches straight through the punching bag to strangle the real Duncan.
  • Didn't Think This Through: The only possible way to justify the Plot Hole listed below, and it still doesn't give Courtney much of an excuse. Knowing Courtney (in this season at least), it might be plain old hypocrisy.
  • Geisha: Owen becomes one in this episode, when he's 'guiding' the teams (really sabotaging them for Chris).
  • Groin Attack: Harold receives one during the robot suit part of the challenge, leading Duncan to proclaim This Means War! on Courtney and annihilating Beth in her suit.
  • Interchangeable Asian Cultures: As Harold points out, Chris' presentation of the challenge is a mix-up of elements from Chinese and Japanese cultures (e.g. the Chinese martial art of kung-fu mixed with stereotypical clothes from Japan).
  • Kidnapped While Sleeping: After the Final Five get to sleep, Chris has them brought over back to the forest of Wawanakwa. The campers awaken amidst nature, which makes for a perfect introduction to the spiritual martial arts challenge.
  • Knife Fight: Beth and Courtney are sent to the kitchen and left with a multitude of knives. Both girls think they are supposed to engage in a knife fight. Beth reasons out loud that she's willing to give it a try solely because Courtney is her opponent. Not one to take insults lightly, Courtney retorts that Beth shouldn't pick fights she can't win. Finally, Chef returns to explain that the knives are to prepare dinner.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Duncan gets knocked out cold by Harold after he insults Leshawna.
  • Odd Friendship: Harold and Duncan form one, albeit temporarily.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: Before the Sasquatchanakwa attacks him, Owen nervously waves to him and greets it, only to get his clothes shredded to pieces.
  • Plot Hole: Courtney is upset that the girls are outnumbered 2-3, after Lindsay voted herself off in the last episode. Hello? Courtney voted off Lindsay on purpose, along with Duncan. Also, when the girls outnumbered the boys 4-3 in "Super Hero-ld", she helped Justin and Duncan eliminate LeShawna.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Harold names a snail he finds "Leshawna Jr", or LJ.
  • Scary Stinging Swarm: As Harold's trainer, Duncan comes up with a reflex exercise. A swarm of bees is trapped underneath a cloche and once the cloche is lifted Harold has to pick at the bees one by one with chopsticks. Thing is, Duncan fails to warn Harold of any part of the exercise and makes it seem like he's offering him a good meal. As soon as the cloche is lifted, Harold gets swarmed by the ticked-off bees.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Before he flies away, Chris says "Excelsior!".
    • Courtney's line "wax on, wax off" and Duncan attempting to make Harold to catch bees using a pair of chopsticks both come from The Karate Kid (1984).
    • Duncan mentions Muhammad Ali in the confessional.
    • The robot costumes used for Harold and Beth's fight resemble Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots, while their controllers resemble those of the Atari 2600.
    • Sasquatchanakwa is dressed like Raiden from Mortal Kombat.
  • Stop Hitting Yourself: For the first part of the challenge, Harold gets strapped in a radio-controlled robot suit to which Duncan has the controller. They're supposed to fight as a team, but Duncan takes the opportunity to make Harold kick himself in the face. With mirth in his voice, he tells him to stop kicking himself.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Sasquatchanakwa, after Harold pours out the water he was carrying, kicking him in the face, and stealing the bonsai.
    Sasquatchanakwa: (annoyed) Not cool!
  • Taught by Experience: Courtney desperately needs an alliance to stay in the game, but Beth says in the confessional that she's learned from her experiences with Heather and Justin when someone is only trying to be her friend for their own benefit. She proceeds to milk it by getting Courtney to handle the grunt work for Chef in exchange for lounging and enjoying Courtney's perks.
  • Threatening Shark: One is in the tank that the girls have to get the fish they're preparing out of.
