Movie: A Troll in Central Park (1994)

This review contains examples of:

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: In-Universe. Critic wonders if Stanley's actually a villain wanting to cover the city in plants judging by the ending.
  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: Critic cheers when Stanley gets turned into stone near the end of the film.
  • Berserk Button: Critic despises the movie so much, that just mentioning the title will launch him into a cursing rage.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Stanley's defense when the Critic asks if he could've been in a movie that had a bit more charm, rather than be as annoying as the end result was.
Stanley: But annoyance is part of my charm! I'm like a cute little puppy who barks a lot, or a unicorn's horn shoved up your ass, or pancreatic cancer.
  • Call-Back: To Saved by the Bell, where he went over the show's origins as Good Morning Miss Bliss. This time, Hayley Mills is quite pissed about how she got screwed over in the revamp.
  • Catchphrase Interruptus: "Zuul, motherfuc- (Stanley runs away) HEY!"
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: Critic rips into the movie for having the moral that if you just dream alone, they'll come true, feeling it's a message that talks down to its audience.
Critic: So, Stanley and the kids sail through a world of magic, literally done just through the power of dreaming. THAT'S the only explanation. What are you trying to teach our kids, movie? That if you just dream, your dog will come back to life, or your parents will get back together? Dammit, you need logistics, and a system in place to execute that vision! This isn't pandering to your kids, it's simple logic! Dreams don't happen by just dreaming, you make it happen! The phrase is "Follow your dreams" not just "Dream" alone! That makes no sense!
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Parodied, when Gus calls out Stanley for being a coward.
Critic: (gasps) Did he suggest that somebody have BALLS in this movie!?
  • Groin Attack: "My nads! MY ENCHANTED NADS!!!"
  • Inferred Holocaust: In-Universe; the movie ends with all of New York being engulfed in vines and flowers. It's meant to be heartwarming, but Nostalgia Critic notes that it looks more like some sort of supervillain takeover even if it's supposed to be another dream sequence.
  • Long List: The Critic shows a list of the flaws that Gus could have named as the reason Stanley's dreams won't come true. It takes up the whole screen.
    • Earlier we have a long list (this time said out loud instead of a Freeze-Frame Bonus) of franchises that are Sickeningly Sweet, but are still butch in comparison to the movie.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Critic points this out in the roles of British stars Jonathan Pryce and Hayley Mills as Gus and Rosie's parents.
Critic: (scoffs) Sounds about as convincing as House. (audience boos him) Oh, come on, it's obvious! It's so incredibly obvious!
  • Running Gag: Critic calling Stanley on the phone to criticize him.
  • Sarcasm Mode: Critic's tone when commending Jonathan Pryce and Hayley Mills for hiding their accents (see above).
  • Shout-Out
    • Stanley dodging cars in New York City is compared to Dragon's Lair, complete with a parody of the game's graphics shown over the picture.
    • When Stanley saves Rosie from falling with his flying ship, the Back to the Future theme plays (a reference to a similar scene from Back to the Future Part II).
    • "Duel of the Fates" from The Phantom Menace plays during Stanley and Gnorga's "thumb war".
    • The Critic insists the film was intended to entertain walls, but doubts that even that was a success, using a clip from the imploding house in Poltergeist as an example.
    "Should've rented Iron Giant."
  • Take That!: When Gnorga makes her appearance.
Critic: Boy, Lindsay Lohan really let herself go, didn't she.
  • Worst. Whatever. Ever!: He notes that this is often considered Don Bluth's weakest film and seems to share that view; He also blasts it as everything that is wrong with movies aimed explicitly at small children.

(singing to the tune of "Volga Boat Men") "I'm a bad troll!"
