Tropes in this episode:

  • An Aesop: Teamwork can solve any problem.
  • Advertisement:
  • Answer Cut: When Rapunzel and Feldspar zoom right past Varian and Xaviar on the river, the former wonders, "How are they moving so fast?" Cut to a close-up of the makeshift roller skates Rapunzel is wearing.
  • Artifact of Doom: The titular lost treasure is very much like Pandora's Box—open it and the unfortunate victim will suffer unspeakable doom.
  • Ascended Extra: Feldspar plays a big role here, becoming Rapunzel's partner and eventually realizes the treasure is cursed.
  • The Bore: Xavier's constant stories are so boring that one of the skeletons falls apart just from listening to him.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": When Xavier is about to tell the legend of the Cheating Willows, Varian promptly shuts him up.
    Varian: Enough with the legends!!!
  • Bilingual Bonus: "Herz Der Sonne" is German for "Heart of the Sun"
  • Breather Episode: A full comedy with almost no drama, after a series of episodes dealing with the themes of the season. This is also the first episode of the season where Cassandra is completely absent.

  • The Bus Came Back: Ruddiger comes back since we've last seen him go to the dungeon with Varian back in "Secret of the Sundrop".
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: A subversion. Rapunzel made it clear that copying the map is cheating, but with the cursed nature of the treasure, it became fair game to cheat. Everyone got mad when they saw Rapunzel and Feldspar with the map, but at least it got their attention so she can warn everyone about the curse when they got there.
  • Continuity Nod: Stan tricks Varian by placing extra armor on a rock, like how Varian himself tricked Rapunzel and Frederic with a dummy in his liking back in "Secret of the Sundrop".
  • Costume Evolution: Varian gets a new outfit this episode, having ditched his alchemy clothes for a more adventurous look, though he still keeps his signature goggles.

  • Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: Ruddiger keeps getting ahead of everybody then stops to set up traps, traps that never work except when he goes to test them.
  • Epic Fail: Just like Wile E. Coyote, every trap Ruddiger attempts on Maximus doesn't work except on him.
  • For Want of a Nail: If Feldspar hadn't recreated the map to the treasure when he did, Rapunzel wouldn't have learned the treasure was cursed in the first place.
  • Hidden Depths: Feldspar reveals he speaks the Saporians' language.
  • Hypocrite: Angry calls out Rapunzel for cheating, and is immediately called out for stealing Varian and Xavier's hot air balloon.
  • Ironic Echo: Varian's "like a bird" when in Xavier's balloon is repeated by Angry after she and Stan steal it. Followed by the Reveal Shot below.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Varian attempted the "dummy trick" on Rapunzel once, and now he knows how it feels like to be on the receiving end of that dirty trick.
  • Letting the Air Out of the Band: At the beginning, Rapunzel looks at a blueprint of how the throne room used to look like, then she lowers it revealing it in ruins, as the background music suddenly winds down to a stop.
  • Never My Fault: Lance was the one who opened the box and unleashed the curse. His response? Throwing the box into Eugene's hands yelling "What did you do?!".
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!: Rapunzel falls victim to this when she realizes that she put her subjects into danger after Feldspar explains that the treasure of Herz Der Sonne is cursed. Eugene and Lance follow suit when they open the treasure chest and unleash the said curse after taking the chest from everyone else at the last second.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Lance and Eugene waste time snacking and oversleep on top of that, yet still make it to the tomb within a minute of everyone else.
  • On a Scale from One to Ten: When Eugene and Lance unleash the curse on the treasure, Varian cries out, "10 on the doom scale! 10 on the doom scale!"
  • Overly Long Gag: Xavier telling long stories based on whatever situation he and Varian face, which annoys him.
  • Punch Catch: One of the skeletons does this to Eugene, then punches him with his own fist.
  • Remembered Too Late: Xaviar remembers the Legend of the Cursed Treasure of Herz Der Sonne, after someone already opened the treasure chest.
Varian: What?! You know, next time LEAD with the high-doom-ratio legends!
  • Reveal Shot: At one point after stealing Xaviar's balloon, we get a shot of Angry enjoying the ride, then the camera pulls back to reveal it got trapped in tree vines.
  • Schmuck Bait: While in Xaviar's hot air balloon, Varian spots what appears to be Stan drowning in the river. They land the balloon to check out, but it turns out it's just leftover guard's armor set up so Stan and Angry can leave in the balloon without warning.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Eugene and Lance invoke "The Tortoise and the Hare" when they lag behind to relax, assured of their victory, while the other contestants race. Except unlike the original story they do end up getting there at the same time as everyone else once they finally get going.
    • Ruddiger's attempts to stall Maximus and Pascal are very Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner-esque, complete with them usually backfiring on him.
  • Treasure Hunt Episode: Of the racing kind. Too bad the treasure was cursed.
  • Wham Line!: Feldspar reads something unusual on the map he recreated:
Feldspar: Oh, this says, "Beware the crypt."
