    Anime Episodes

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Kurumu snaps when Tsukune rejects her, feeling like the lengths that she went to to try and beat Moka were for nothing because of him.
  • And I Must Scream:
    • When under Kurumu's hypnotic gaze, Tsukune's thoughts are free to be horrified by his actions as his body plays along with her flirting and break Moka's heart.
    • The stream of fresh tears flowing from Ishigami's victims imply that they are fully conscious when they are Taken for Granite.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Ginei in "Coexistence" presents himself as a handsome gentlemen (bringing Moka, Kurumu and Nekonome bouquets of roses as a welcome gift), when really he's nothing but a pervert who routinely spies on girls and then frames Tsukune for his own crimes so that he could have Moka and Kurumu to himself.
  • Comically Lopsided Rivalry: Played for Drama. Kurumu seducing Tsukune was her way of "declaring war" on Moka for seducing all the boys in school, when really Moka is a Clueless Dude Magnet who only has eyes for Tsukune and everyone else's attraction to her is completely out of her control.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After Moka beats her and Tsukune has her spare her life, it is then that Kurumu decides that he's the one and becomes Moka's official love-rival for real.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: In "Coexistence", Ginei frames Tsukune by tricking him into looking into the girl's locker room. When he's caught, he is chased down by the irate girls. By the time Moka finds them, he has been tied up with rope with his face beaten bloody and is later locked in a storage room by Ginei. While it's still Played for Drama, it's more than what happens to any of the female characters, who are either meat-shielded by a chivalrous Tsukune or (in Moka's case) has her rosario removed before their victimizers try anything with them.
  • Fantastic Racism: Monsters have a general distate towards humans (see Felony Misdemeanor for context), but Moka dislikes them because she was routinely bullied at humans schools her whole life. It is not until she gets to know Tsukune better does this opinion change.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: It is established that while Yokai Academy was founded to help acclimate monsters to live among humans, any human that were to find their way into the school's borders (by accident or intentionally) would be executed on the spot. This encourages Tsukune to try and leave, only to decide to stay and pretend to be a monster at the end of the episode when Moka promises to keep it a secret (and because the bus won't return for another month).
  • Frame-Up: In "Coexistence", Ginei frames Tsukune for his various crimes, Kurumu and Yukari managing to clear his name with their own internal investigation and printed fliers.
  • Harem Seeker: Kurumu has been using her sex appeal and Hypnotic Eyes to collect every boy in school to be her own personal band of male groupies, using every trick she can think of to add Tsukune to her collection.
  • Hearing Voices: Inner Moka starts talking to Outer Moka through her rosario to explain how everything thing Tsukune has been saying has been the product of Kurumu's hypnosis.
  • Hate Sink: Among the various chapter-length antagonists in the Arc, Nagare has to be the most despicable. He blackmails Kurumu with alleged photographs of her in a compromising position and forces her to attend their own private photoshoot of her in sexy outfits against her will. She proceeds to increase the number of things to blackmail her with (like her own personal thoughts and the newspaper's layout and data. When she stands up for herself, he tries knocking her out with his toxic gas and tries to sexually assault her when she tries getting away, boasting that he intends on doing the same to Moka once he's done with her like he has with so many other girls. It's no wonder he was kept out of the Lighter and Softer anime.
  • Kill It with Water: In "Going Clubbing" , it's revealed that vampires cannot touch untreated water without being painfully shocked.
  • Lecherous Licking: Saizo is seen doing this at the thought of eating humans and at the sight of Moka.
  • Meet Cute: Tsukune meets Moka when she crashes her bike into him when he gets lost in the woods.
  • Monster of the Week:
    • "The School Vampire" features Saito, a bully and an unidentified hulking monster who desires Moka and is willing to kill Tsukune and take Moka by force if he felt the need to.
    • "Kurumu of Black Dreams" has Kurumu, a succubus who tries to charm Tsukune to add to her harem to spite Moka.
    • "Going Clubbing" has the Swimming Club and its president Tamao Ichinose, mermaids who lured various members of the student body so that they could suck the life out of them.
    • "Coexisting" has Ginei Morioka, president of the Newspaper Club and a werewolf that frames Tsukune for his various perverted antics.
    • "Love is a Witch" has Tsukune and his harem defending Yukari against Lizard Folk who use her violation in dress code and her liberal use of magic as an excuse to exercise their Fantastic Racism against witches onto Yukari.
    • "The Art of the Birthday" has Hitomi Ishigami, U.A.'s Art teacher and a Medusa that has been turning students to stone to be her own human sculptures
    • "Deadline!" features Nagare Kano, a Madslug and serial stalker who forces Kurumu to go out with him through blackmail.
  • Not Good with Rejection: When Tsukune decides she would rather apologize to Moka than be with Kurumu and lets her down gently, her response is to extend her wings and claws to kill him, not wanting to be bested by Moka.
  • Poor Communication Kills: In "Going Clubbing", Tsukune joins the Swimming Club because he wanted to impress Moka (unaware that water is harmful to her), while Moka thinks he joined because she thinks he wants to leer at other girls in bikinis. It is not until Inner Moka is hit with a splash of water does he find out the truth.
  • Power Limiter: It is established that Moka's rosario acts as this. Tsukune is the only one who can take it off, and when it does, the all-powerful Inner Moka is released.
  • To Serve Man:
    • Moka has never had fresh blood before tasting Tsukune and confesses that she finds it irresistible.
    • Saizo thinks that food is all that humans are good for.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In "Going Clubbing", after defeating Tamao, Inner Moka slaps Tsukune and proceeds to chew him out for even getting in the water with her in the first place, especially since seeing him with Tamao really hurt Outer Moka's feelings. Her exact words are as follows:
Inner Moka: You listen to me. You don't understand a single thing about her, so don't pretend like you do. You're a little boy who can't think of anyone but himself. Consider her feelings sometime.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Kurumu's favorite tactic to feign a pain her her chest, giving her victim (in this case Tsukune) an incentive to give her all his attention and then use her breasts and Hypnotic Eyes to ensnare him.
  • Your Costume Needs Work: When Outer Moka confesses that she is a vampire to Tsukune, it is before he realizes that Yokai Academy is populated by actual monsters and he brushes this off as be either being crazy or an Otaku.
