Tropes for this episode include:

  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: When Moka gives Tsukune a flirtatious shove, she accidentally pushes him so hard he flies over to a nearby column, leaving it severally cracked from the impact.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Nekonome's class, you can see Kurumu sitting in the back row of the class, sticking out like a sore thumb due to her yellow vest and purple ribbons in her hair.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • For Tsukune, it's after he realizes that he is in a school full of monsters. When it has become clear that Outer Moka (whom every guy is instantly smitten with) has affections for Tsukune, every guy in the student body gives Tsukune the stink-eye and Saizo to antagonize him instantly, only for Moka to defend him. This establishes him as a Clueless Chick-Magnet and an Unlucky Everydude who is completely outmatched by his monster classmates, but he is such a Nice Guy that the girls that flock to him are ready to fight on his defense.
    • Outer Moka meets Tsukune by crashing her bike into him, having become light headed from anemia. She overlooks that his hand is on her leg and grabs a hanker-chief to help when his nose bleeds, only for her to bite his neck when the smell of his blood is too much for her. This establishes her as being sweet and a little clumsy, with her more monstrous traits presented as harmless and endearing.
    • Inner Moka appears in an imposing Transformation Sequence and knocks Saizo out with a single kick without so much as blinking. She then catches Tsukune in her arms as he passes out, establishing her as the cool, stoic type with a soft-center who solves her problems with a swift kick.
  • Fantastic Racism: Monsters have a general distate towards humans (see Felony Misdemeanor for context), but Moka dislikes them because she was routinely bullied at humans schools her whole life. It is not until she gets to know Tsukune better does this opinion change.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: It is established that while Yokai Academy was founded to help acclimate monsters to live among humans, any human that were to find their way into the school's borders (by accident or intentionally) would be executed on the spot. This encourages Tsukune to try and leave, only to decide to stay and pretend to be a monster at the end of the episode when Moka promises to keep it a secret (and because the bus won't return for another month).
  • Lecherous Licking: Saizo is seen doing this at the thought of eating humans and at the sight of Moka.
  • Meet Cute: Tsukune meets Moka when she crashes her bike into him when he gets lost in the woods.
  • Monster of the Week: Saizo is an orc with a contempt for the idea of coexisting with humans and does little to hide his lust towards Moka. He attacks Tsukune for hanging out with her and later corners Moka with the intent of "claiming" her.
  • Power Limiter: It is established that Moka's rosario acts as this. Tsukune is the only one who can take it off, and when it does, the all-powerful Inner Moka is released.
  • To Serve Man:
    • Moka has never had fresh blood before tasting Tsukune and confesses that she finds it irresistible.
    • Saizo thinks that food is all that humans are good for.
  • Your Costume Needs Work: When Outer Moka confesses that she is a vampire to Tsukune, it is before he realizes that Yokai Academy is populated by actual monsters and he brushes this off as be either being crazy or an Otaku.
